Mitchell BIRTH - Parish Records 1860
« on: Saturday 05 December 09 04:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am hoping to find a parish register recording the christening off an ANN ELIZABETH MITCHELL.

Details
Roman Catholic
b 9 Feb 1860 - Daimond Court, Bradford East
mothers address at birth Shakespear Yard, West Gate, Bradford
mothers name Ann Mitchell (unmarried) - father probably George Schilling

I'd be grateful if anyone had access to RC parish registers for this area and could help.  Otherwise does anybody know which RC churches were in the area.

The christening may be under the name of ANN ELIZABETH SCHILLING I guess.

Thanks as always
Mike

Hi Mike

We have chatted before on ancestry, the Anne Mitchell you speak about here was actually born 1841 in Diamond court Bradford, so I am assuming that the 2nd Ann Mitchell 1869 was a daughter of the 1841 Anne, bloody complicated I know but I am sure I am correct  :)

Keep up the good work Mike, always nice interacting with you, I did however find this site which tells about the German migration to Britain in 19th Century.

Best Wishes

Ronnie  (James Hall)

Hello again Mike, were you aware that George Schilling was a tailor when he first appeared in the Manchester census of 1851? in turner st Manchester, and that after that he appears to have traveled the country probably as a musician, and there after a hawker.
I am hoping soon to be able top get in touch with someone with knowledge of manchester workhouse records. Once I have anything I obtain I will gladly share with you

I did wonder when I saw the 1851c HO107; Piece: 2229; Folio: 598; Page: 24
whether that was that same George Shilling as he's noted as single occ Tailor

there's also this record from
England, Alien Arrivals, 1810-1811, 1826-1869

George Shilling Port of Arrival:   Dover Arrival Date: 6 Feb 1846
Also named with George are Anna Shilling & Josh Hess
Profession Musicians native of Germany

Ladyhawk, Ronnie
Apologies for the late reply - I have just seen this.  Yes, the records you have found are the same family.  George was married to Ann Santos/Hipkins but separated almost immediately.  I suspect he didn't marry Ann Mitchell (my ancestor) as he didn't have a divorce.
Gives me the problem of not being able to link Ann Mitchell to her father which a marriage cert would have given me.

Mmm... that is tricky without a marriage cert.

What about the naming of their children may have been named after their respective parents or siblings?

for example it looks as if
Ann Elizabeth (1860) named after her mother Ann,
Phillip (1864) after his grandfather Phillip (George Snr's father)
George (1869) after his father George,

There's this pedigree tree on familysearch https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/3QZB-NXS you would need to verify as to how accurate all the details are -says George Schilling (b1828 d1889) spouses were

Anne Santos nee Hipkins b1806 marriage 7 Jan 1849 died ?

Catherine Kees b1833 marriage 1849 died 24th Nov 1850

Ann Mitchell b1841 Bradford marriage ? died Oct 1893 Lancashire

names these children

Anne Elizabeth born 9 Feb 1860
Mary Ann 1861
Philip 25 Apr 1964 d 27 Feb 1902
George 1869
Margaret 1871
Catherine 1873
Joseph 15 Mar 1875 died 1907
John 9 Jul 1977 d 1878
Peter 9 July 1877 died 7 Jul 1878
Francis 1879
Luisa 1882 d 1884
James Louis 1882

A long shot/coincidence

Is it possible that Ann Elizabeth Mitchell/Schilling (1860) mother Ann had the same middle name as her daughter  :-\

baptism Christ Church Bradford 9 Apr 1841
Ann Elizabeth Mitchell  parents William & Nancy
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NVK7-JL9
1841 birth registration entry https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/2N9P-TCT

1841 census living Bradford
William Mitchell 20, Nancy 20, Sarah 1 & Ann

the only Bradford baptism I could find for a Sarah Mitchell on family search was on
18 Dec 1839 for a
Sarah Jane Mitchell parents William & Ann (Nancy was originally a diminutive form of Anne or Ann)

There's also this 1841 birth registration entry which could be her
Ann Mitchell https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/2N9B-M8W
no christening details on family search  :(

1881 census living 44 Gun Street https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQ8C-C1B
gives Ann Shilling's age as 40 (1841) pob as Bradford
