Cornelius Fortune
« on: Saturday 30 June 07 12:03 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any links to Fortune families with the name Cornelius as a forename?
The family had it's Roots in Innerwick.
I've traced my mother's line back to circa 1685 and have so far found about 15 Cornelius Fortunes amongst the descendants.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

Not sure if you will know of this already, but the name Cornelius Fortune caught my attention.

On the Longforgan War Memorial there is one Cornelius Fortune Thomson Boyd, died 1917.  Cornelius was in NZ and died during WW1. whilst serving in the NZ Expeditionary Force?  The circumstances of his death are unknown.

Cornelius FTB was the son of David Milne Boyd, Writer and Jessie Blaikie Thomson.  He was born November 26th 1891, 56 Dundee Street, Edinburgh.

David Milne (son of Peter Milne, Miller and Jessie Milne was born 28June/23rd July 1848, Liff Benvie and Iinvergowrie, Angus) married Jessie Blaikie Thomson (daughter of Alexander Thomson and Janet Richie) December 14th 1871, Northgate, Peebles.  One of the witnesses was Cornelius Fortune Thomson.

I don't know when Jessie Thomson died, but David Milne then married Margaret Watt.  He was living in Longforgan where he died and was Inspector of Poor and Registrar.

I don't have any connection to this family, but merely an interest in the War Memorial.

It is such an unusual name, I thought this bit of information might interest you.

Regards,
Dorothy

Thank you Dorothy,
It is certainly of interest.
There is every chance I'll be able to get something out of that info that will link into the info I already have.
I'm off out just now but will certainly look into it later or over the coming days.
Thanks for your response.

Any more clues out there about any Cornelius Fortunes????

Dave

Hello, Dave.
In Peterborough there is a building called "Fortune Buildings", in Cowgate.  There is a photo in Francis Frith's book about Peterborough of Cowgate in 1904.  The caption says it shows Cornelius Fortune Thomson's Burlington Stores.  I think that the Burlington Stores building is not the same as "Fortune Buildings".  The Burlington Stores building has been demolished.
By the way, your request for information includes the line:
The family had it's Roots in Innerwick.
I hope you don't mind, but I have to point out that ' it's ' is an abbreviation for 'it is' or 'it has'.  The word you should have used is the possessive adjective ' its ', which never has an apostrophe.

Thanks for that additional info.

As for the English lesson.  Cheers.  I know better but slip up from time to time.
Some of the spelling and grammar on RC leaves a bit to be desired.
Thank goodness it is a genealogy forum and not a linguistics forum.

Hi

I have a Cornelius Fortune in my line (he was my 5th Great Grandfather) born 18 May 1718 in Innerwick, East Lothian, Scotland and at this point think he was married to a Jean Nisbet. His parents John Fortune and Catharine Lyall.

Cheers

Almost certainly related.
I don't have them on my site, but I recognise the names.  I'll need to check.
I have a substantial document with details of many Fortunes.  Happy to share with you if you don't already have it.

If you request access to my site via the link below, I'll get in touch.
