Benjamin Davies/William Davies
« on: Friday 09 August 13 13:25 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the family of my grandfather William Davies. The only certainties are his father was Benjamin Davies and he was born circa 1872 in Cardiganshire. Research has thrown up several possibilities but the favorite seems to be from the 1881 census where we have Eleanor Davies at Llanfihangel ar Arth with children Sarah (13); David (11); William 8; Benjamin (6) and Bertha (5/12). The family seems to have originated in Llandyssul.

Father Benjamin is alive at the time of the census and may have been working in Aberdare and be living in Bwllfa Road.

If anyone has any information I would love to hear from you even if it is only to eliminate the family. from my research

If Benjamin was born Llandysull, the the birth registration would probably  be in Newcastle Emlyn district.

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/newcastle%20in%20emlyn.html

There are 4 BD`s registered between 1871/72, to be sure of getting the correct birth certificate it would be best to state both  parents names. If none matches the register office will usually tell you.

I find it best to deal with the local area, rather than the GRO.

Good luck.

if that is the right family in 1881, this looks to be the same family in 1891, and Bertha is a boy

1891 5 Pendre St, Llandyssil RG12/4549 folio 18 pg 9
Benjamin Davies head mar 54 general labourer b. Carmarthenshire, Llangeler
Eleanor wife 52 grocer
Berthia son 10
Sarah Jones single mother-in-law 77 retired charwoman
all born Llanfihangel ar Arth except Benjamin

birth reg
Berthier Davies dec qtr 1880 Newcastle Emlyn vol 11b pg 24

Possible marriage
Benjamin Davies sept qtr 1861 Newcastle Emlyn vol 11b pg 29 with Eleanor Jones on the same page
Think you'll need the marriage cert for Benjamin's father as there's more than one Benjamin Davies born Llangeler around that time.

I think this might be Eleanor's mother

The marriage for Benjamin Davies and Eleanor Jones took place at Llanfihangel Ar Arth Parish Church on the 19th of July 1861 after Banns.

Benjamin aged 26 and a Bachelor, living at time of marriage at Gwarcoed, he was a Labourer and he signed his name.   His father is named as Evan Davies, Labourer

Eleanor aged 23 and a Spinster, living at time of marriage at Troedrhiwgribyn,  and signed her name by mark.   Her father is named as John Jones, Ostler.

The vicar was Evan Jones and in the presence of Evan Davies and Jonathan Jones.

It may help you a little.   :)

Hi again, possible marriage by banns:-

Evan Davies to Mary Jones both of Llangeler 15th June 1830 Llangeler
Witnesses David Williams David Evans

The 3rd reading of the banns suggests that Evan was of Garwenuchas? and Mary was of Blaney Synori if that makes sense to anyone!
