Ruth, daughter of Janet who worked at Dunrobin 1920
« on: Friday 11 March 11 11:48 GMT (UK) »
I have a problem here in that I don't know the surname.... Any idea how I can find a birth record for Ruth, the illegitimate daughter of Janet? Probably born in one of the parishes near Dunrobin Castle and round about 1925. I'm prepared to plough through all the birth records for the county if necessary but can't find how to search online without a surname. Would be most grateful for any help

hi fidodido

welcome to rootschat  :)

can you state if "ruth" is still alive ?
rootschat policy is not to discuss living persons

i've had a look at the scotlandspeople website and there are no ruth births registered in sutherland 1920 to 1930
there are 941 births 1923 to 1927 in scotland with the forename ruth , none of these certificates are viewable online

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I think it unlikely that Ruth is still alive.
Do you know if there is any way that I could check if any of the Ruths born between the years you quote have a mother who was not married - eg the child took the mother's surname?

what was janet's maiden surname ?
it might be listed under that(not sure if you have already looked)

i've discovered that you can search on a mothers maiden but only at a family
centre(not online) , only from 1927(have a read through the following post)

Unfortunately my main problem is that I don't know Janet's surname. I'm wondering now if she might have been in service at Dunrobin Castle as early as 1911, and if the census might reveal the names of any Janets working there - or indeed living in the surrounding area.
What do you think? It would give me a start point at least

fidodido,

I spotted your request for info on Janet who worked at Dunrobin Castle circa start 1911.
Although I am unable to provide you with the information you require, I do have a similar request for any info of the period for my grandmother Jane Mackenzie . She was a ladies maid at Dunrobin, , must be from early 1900 to at least say 1912/13 ,and surely would have known your Janet . She lived in a cottage up Dunrobin Glen with her mother (my great grandma)

I have a similar thread under ----     'Dunrobin Glen, Golspie'

Good luck with your search
