Marriage - Possibly in Llanspyddid area
« on: Friday 02 August 13 10:10 BST (UK) »
In 1841 David HUGHES is a gamekeeper, living in Crickhowell, born in county. His wife Rachel is also listed as born in county.

In 1851 Rachel is a widow, aged 62, born in Llanspyddid.

David & Rachel appear to have had children baptized in Llanspyddid between 1815-1830, but I have been unable to locate their marriage.

If anyone has access to the registers I would be very grateful for a look up.

Thanks

Geoff

I see a baptism in 1815 (Aug.27th) Cicilia dau of David & Rachel Hughes, at Llansbyddyd, St Catwg. David is described as a shoemaker.

The only marriage I can find is on the 28th July 1803 a David Hughes married Rachel Watkins at Church of St Gwendoline, Talgarth. David is described as a Mason.

Thanks for that Colin,

I have since realised I was wrong in my original posting. Sorry.

The facts I have are that Abigail HUGHES married a George GUNTHORPE in Llangattock 1851. From the marriage cert. her father is David HUGHES, no occupation listed.

From census Abigail was born in Llanfaes c1821. From FreeReg there are baptisms in St. David, Brecon of a William 1830 and an Elizabeth 1825, both of David & Rachael.

A William HUGHES is also a witness at Abigail's marriage.

George GUNTHORPE's fathers occupation is also not shown on the marriage certificate, and I know he was deceased at time of marriage. I therefore assume Abigail's father was also deceased.

David and Rachel are the best match for parents and had a son William but, gamekeeper, mason, shoemaker perhaps I have followed the wrong parents?

FreeReg does not show the father's occupation for the Llanfaes baptisms. - more work needed I feel.

Thanks again

William's baptism was 14th August 1830, St. David's Brecon. David is described as a Servant.
Elizabeth's baptism was June 12th 1825, St. David's Brecon. David is described as Shoemaker, though its very faint.

Thanks again,

I can see how a shoemaker may have become a servant, and a servant a gamekeeper.

Only problem now is confirming if these baptisms are for Abigail's siblings as all evidence is circumstantial. Her baptism would be a fantastic find.

Whist the 1803 Talgarth marriage is tempting, "Mason" and the year makes me feel otherwise.
