« on: Monday 30 January 12 01:27 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any information on William Copland m. Catherine Dargavel on 15th June, 1888 Govan Hill, Glasgow.  I believe William was born in Kelton, Kirkcudts.

Hi iwcc

To save us going over what you may already know - have you got the actual marriage cert - and do you have any census for the couple (or for William prior to the marriage?)

Cheers

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.  I don't have the marriage certificate of Catherine Dargavel to William Copland.  I do have their son James Dargavel Copland's birth, marriage and death certificate

I am new to this and I am finding it hard to work out who William's parents were as there seems to be a lot of William Coplands with different wives.
I haven't found a lot that I can tie to my line of research from the Census as yet.  Thank you for your interest

Hi

The marriage cert would be an investment, as it should name his parents and put you on the right track among the COPLANDS.....however, a look at the Census does provide some clues:

By 1901, not sure if William has died? or is absent from the house on Census night?  His mother Fanny, appears to be in the household though:

1891: 15 Jamieson Street, Glasgow Govan, Lanarkshire
Head: William COPLAND 36, Loco Engine Painter, b Castle Douglas, Kirkudbrightshire
Wife: Catherine COPLAND 34, b Sanquhar, Dumfries-shire
Son: William COPLAND 13, Stationers Message Boy,  b Glasgow
Son: James COPLAND 2, b Govanhill
Dau: Margaret COPLAND 1, b Govanhill

1901: 119 Smith Street, Glasgow Govan, Lanarkshire
Head: Catherine COPLAND 43, Keeps Boarder, b Sanquhar, Dumfries-shire
Son: James COPLAND 12, Scholar, b Glasgow
Dau: Margaret COPLAND 11, Scholar, b Glasgow
Son: Thomas COPLAND 8, Scholar, b Glasgow
Dau: Fanny COPLAND 5, , b Glasgow
Mother: Margaret DARG**EL 71, b Sanquhar, Dumfries-shire
Mother: Fanny COPLAND 71, b Colven, Dumfrieshire (Colvend?)
Plus 3 young male boarders: McLEAN, TIUTT, FORREST

William's age in 1891 indicates a birth of around 1855. Also noting the son William in 1891 - born a decade or so before he married Catherine.

It also seems he was married before he married Catherine - 1881 Census coming up...

Cheers

Hi,

This is an interesting lineage;-

William Copland was the son of William Copland and Fanny Mckinnell. He died 22 Mar 1897 at 34 Govanhill, Glasgow.
His father William was born abt 1817 in Dumfries and after two marriages to Christina Bell and Fanny McKinnell he died at 144 Caledonia Road, Glasgow on 7 Aug 1893.
William snr was the son of William Copland and Agnes Smith.
William snr had a brother John born 4 Nov 1823 Dumfries who was also a hairdresser married Isabella Graham then Helen Harper and died 13 Sep 1892 in Dumfries. he had several children one of whom - John Coupland lived in Co Durham and died there in about 1925.
But it is Fanny who gives us a much longer lineage:-
She was the daughter of John McKinnell 1792-1879 and Janet Wilson 1791-1862.
John born Borgue, KBT and died Castle Douglas.
Janet born Colvend, KBT and also died Castle Douglas 10 Jan 1862.
Janet Wilson was the daughter of Thomas Wilson and Lucy Lindsay.
Lucy Lindsay was the daughter of William Lindsay 1707-1762 Corsock, Colvend, KBT and Helen Blair 1718-1781 Corsock.
The Lindsays and the Milligan's were an important Galloway family. For a good early history Google "The Regard Biien #18".

Dear TomsTree,  Thank you ever so much for the posting.  You have cleared up so many questions that I had about the Coplands.  I notice that there is a change of spelling (Copland-Coupland) have you any other information about that.I must admit that I got 'bogged down' with all the 'Williams' and have not done much in recent weeks.  We are Coplands and so I am keen to get this family 'sorted out'.   Are you a Copland or descendant - is there anything I can help you with?
Currently I am in the middle of arranging a wedding, Christmas, return of family from overseas and an ill husband so I guess it will be next year before I can put my effort back into family research.
Once again thank you - I am very grateful.
P.S. I don't suppose you have any photos???
