Help needed for marriage in Sheffield
« on: Sunday 27 January 13 22:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello all

There is a marriage that is alluding me:

John Scatchard to Sarah [no surname]: Sheffield 1 Oct 1730.

This information comes into my tree from several other trees. It seems to be "known" to several researchers. Of course, I like to check everything out myself, but I don't have a surname for the wife and I don't have a church name (only the city).  ???

Could some kind soul suggest a way forward or point me towards an index or resource that might help?

Many thanks!

You could try Bishops transcripts held at the Borthwick Institute at York University nr York
But can be expensive, £25 a hour but as it will be a known date on micro film they may do a reduced charge as it only takes minutes to check. Best phone them they may do it free.

Sheffield archives are cheaper at £12 for 1/2 hour look ups but charge the same if they find nothing. Date 1730 will be the the main mother parish of Sheffield

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

To add to the confusion, at least some researchers with online trees seem to think the man who married Sarah on that date was William Scatchard, rather than John.

The source for this information may have been an old IGI submitted record, if this old Rootsweb thread is anything to go by (is it yours?):

Sheffield Cathedral marriages were transcribed in 1975-76 and sent to Yorkshire archaeological Society for printing they cover the period 1735 to 1850 and are available on CD
I suppose that rules St Peter St Paul out ???

Maybe John does not want to be found, I set off yesterday for Sheffield archives  , only to find they were closed for stocktaking :-[, then as I got in the car the side bar of my glasses spec's fell off. I managed to balance my glasses using one side bar at the supermarket only to find my trouser zip had broken and sprung open when I went to the toilet ! :-[- but fortunate I had a long overcoat on to get to the car

What a day !!  ???  >:( (Spooky)

There was a John  Scatchard  living in Sheffield in 1747 so William could be a tail end child of the marriage 1730

From IGI

Willm. Scatchard

baptism/christening date:

 28 May 1747

CATHEDRAL SAINT PETER,SHEFFIELD,YORK,ENGLAND

father

John Scatchard

I went to Borthwick York yesterday looking at Sheffield Cathedral BT's -(the only parish that covered 1730 Sheffield including Attercliffe)-I looked at the whole year of 1730 also the 2 years eitherside and there was no entry of any John Scatchard marriage to a Sarah or any Bride

I have a copy of The Parish Register of Sheffield for SS Peter & Paul it wasn't given cathedral status until 1914.

The only marriage for a John SCRATCHARD between 1720-1736 was this one.

24 Oct 1732 John SCRATCHARD (jun) Cutler to Margaret HALL spinster.
