G.P.O Company

Hello all

Could anybody please tell me if their was a G.P.O in 1911 at Grimsbury,Banbury,Oxfordshire.

According to the 1911 edition of Kelly's Directory of Oxfordshire, there was a sub-Post Office at Grimsbury.  The sub-postmaster was T CAKEBREAD.

By the way, the General Post Office was formed in the 1660s as a government department, not a commercial company.  The Postmaster-General was in charge of it, and was a member of the government.

This continued until 1969 when the word 'General' was dropped and 'Post Office' became a statutory corporation.  (There have been many further changes, most of them controversial.)

For the information it makes sense to me now why my family member was all the way down in Oxfordshire when he lived in stoke on trent Staffordshire.
