Finding out ancestor's Godparents - Kirtlington b1917
« on: Sunday 27 April 14 09:26 BST (UK) »
I would like to find out who the Godparents were for an ancestor who was born 1917 in Kirtlington.

Is there a way to find out? It would be in the parish records like how witnesses are recorded on a marriage certificate? None of the online records I looked at ever provide this information.

I've never seen the names of godparents recorded in parish records.  Sorry.  However, someone else might know whether records are kept elsewhere.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I've never seen Godparents names recorded in the baptism records transcripts at the OHC either. But,  the information must surely have been recorded somewhere.

Some parish registers do record such information - currently for example OFHS is checking a transcript for baptisms at St Lukes church - now the History Centre, and the vicar has squeezed, with tiny, not too legible, writing, 3 or more godparents in !

Hi there

I dont know if this has been done at Kidlington but I have a set of parish register transcripts for Charlbury purchased from the OFHS & the later baptisms on those also have the godparents so if I were you I would enquire of the OFHS through their web site if their transcript of the Kidlington registers also have god parents on them - its worth a shot

All the very best

None of the English C of E parish records I've seen have had godparents recorded, which is a pity because it could be very useful in distinguishing between people with same name and similar birthdate. I have seen it on Irish (Catholic) registers and for some of my ancestors in the Channel Islands. In fact it was from baptism record of my 2 x great grandmother, I discovered her mother had been married twice, because one of her godparents was described as her "maternal half-sister"  (but in French!).

Hi
I have just looked at the OFHS CD for Kirtlington and there are no God Parents listed during the period of your search.
It is a shame and as others have said would have been very useful now a days as we em barque on these quests.

I have seen godparents listed in registers for French Huguenot churches in London for some of my relatives but never seen such things in Anglican records. I have not yet heard of any resources that list godparents of baptised children.

James

I have just turned my lights on and realised I may have a snippet of info which may help you.
In some parish records God parents were entered as sponsors so that may help in some small way
