Doing a bit of trawling about and it seems that Adam and Agnes had 3 children - Adam, Helen and Mary. It also mentions that Adam was a shepherd. I might be getting somewhere now - exciting!

I've managed to find Adam's parent's (I think), who were Walter Henderson and Maragret Ruecastle.

By the way, I must thank you for all your help!!

No problem

So - if Agnes was born in Gordon and that's where they married - the banns were read at Longformacus so I wonder if that's where Adam was born

I was just doing a quick read through and realised I had missed the reply with the Family Tree link.

The 1851 would seem to suggest that Janet Hill was previously Janet Henderson but Janet does not show up in the names of the children listed as those of Adam & Agnes.

Thomas & Janet were married on the 1841 census but no children and here's the marriage confirming she was Janet Henderson

And her baptism

There is a birth for an Adam Henderson to Adam Henderson and Agnes Dodds on Family Search in Gordon 1818 (christening 26 April).

A tree on Ancestry has this Adam Henderson emigrating to the USA, having married Margaret Ingles . On the 1841 census an Adam Henderson b 1821 (age rounded down) is living in Greenlaw with a family called Ingles.

Possibly helps to rule out Adam and Agnes as parents of your Adam.

Adam and Agnes Dods are my OH's 4g grandparents. I think they can indeed be ruled out as parents of your Adam. Their son Adam b abt 1794 died on the 5/11/1811 aged 17 years, (this from the gravestone inscription in Gordon Churchyard) I have 9 children for them (only 2 sons) both called Adam.....as Millmoor points out the second was christened on 26/4/1818. Hope this helps.
