PETER TELFORD or TELFER
« on: Wednesday 12 February 14 02:23 GMT (UK) »
Looking for further information on Peter Telford or Telfer. I would love to find some siblings and confirm father's name.  As you can see no other members of the family are shown:
1841 Scotland Census about Peter Telfer
Peter Telfer Age:12 , Estimated birth year:   abt 1829
Gender: Male born: Roxburghshire, Scotland
Civil Parish: Kelso , County: Roxburghshire
Address: Spylaw

Peter died in Victoria Australia in 1892.  Wife Mary Ann Pender.  He may have emigrated in 1852 to Victoria on the ship Emigrant, age 21.  Occ Farmer.
Any clues on what Spylaw means? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Schio

Family Search has a Peter Telfer born at Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire to William Telfer and Jane Clark, and and christened at Linton on 20 May 1829. Interestingly, SP has similar information but calls the father Walter.

Spylaw is a name that appears in several places in the Borders. If I remember rightly, it's pronounced 'Spee-law' or 'Spill-law'. My guess is that its origin is a high hill or 'law' from which it was possible to look out over the land - possibly for the English enemy?

Thank you very much both landj and ev.  Your help is very much appreciated.  I think the family in the census is correct.  There is a future grandson called Walter born in Australia.  Walter seems to be prominent in the tree and I see why.
Sorry I was not sure how to respond to you each individually.  Still lots to learn.  Regards from Queensland, Australia

No idea why  the farm is called Spylaw ,but the housing estate down the road  from the farm is called Spylaw Park. Could have something to do with Maxwellheugh is up the hill and looking down on the town of Kelso.
