George Hawkins NEWMAN

hi all,

trying to trace details on my gg grandad. all i have to date is George Hawkins Newman  resided in the Somerset / Wiltshire region in the 1870's - he was an innkeeper. He had 2 sons that i'm aware of -- George Augustus Newman born abt 1849 on Freshford, Somerset & John Hawkins Newman born abt 1852 in Limley Stoke, Wiltshire. George Hawkins Newman was alive as late as 1873 - i have the marriage cert of George Augustus Newman in Devon. Any help greatly appreciated.

The IGI at www.familysearch.org has the birth and baptism of John Hawkins NEWMAN, born 10 Dec 1851, bapt 14 Mar 1852, Westwood, Wiltshire, parents George and Ann.

Can't see them in 1881, but they are both still around in 1891, back in Wiltshire.

Hel(l)en would appear to be his second wife. Ann died between 1851 and 1860, as in Dec qtr 1860 George Hawkins NEWMAN married Helen BRITTAN at Chippenham, which is in Wiltshire

thanks greatly for the research - it answers a lot of questions. i had seen the marriage to helen brittan but the dates didn't fit if she was the 1st wife - it all makes sense now & she fits as the 2nd wife. You've been a great help.

I saw some references to George Augustus Newman in older posts from Dirtydave?? Just wondering if you [or anyone else with connection]are still on here, and if you can help with info on this man. I have him as just plain George Newman, others on Ancestry have him as George Hawkins Newman. Everyone has him as son of George Newman and Ann Chambray. Is there any details out there that can verify his correct name please? I did have a transcription of his baptism, from reading LDS film many years ago, but can't find them now.
