Annie Baxter Chaplin born 1880
« on: Saturday 11 October 14 11:23 BST (UK) »
Hi "deciphering wizards"

Dundee, Scotland was "plagued" by a Registrar in the mid to late 1800's who wrote in a tight backhand script that makes deciphering of records a bit difficult.

With a lot of patience, I can normally get by with most of them but the attached one has me stumped.

Any help please?

Regards

Hi Jennifer

I see where you're coming from with this. Father was Robert McIntosh Chaplin (her marriage record is clearer) and he was a "Confectioner" although the second word on the attachment isn't clear.  Her mother, I now know was Jane Smith Baxter.

There is a Victoria Road in Dundee. Could it be that?

Yep, second name is Mcintosh but first name I would still stick by John.

Hi again Jennifer

Sorry ... had to head out to the shops!  Saturday afternoon and all that  ;)

The more I read your replies, the more the information falls into place. Robert McIntosh Chaplin is her father and Jane Smith Dewars her mother. "Paddler" could be quite correct.

What you though was "Thomas" is in fact M.S. (Maiden Surname) - the Scottish way of entering it.

The 1881 Census has her as Boarder age 5 months with a James and Margaret Henderson. James is also a confectioner. 1891 she's with her paternal grandparents and 1901 back with her parents  :)

What do you reckon her date of birth was? It looks like 18 November 1880.

Her life got even more complicated to trace when she married and emigrated to New Zealand via Canada in 1941  ::)  Another hiccup in the process was finding another Annie Chaplin born in Dundee in 1880.  I had initially chosen the wrong one!

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
