Number before "Occupation or Rank" description on Marriage Cert?
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 05:13 GMT (UK) »
It looks to me that on my Grandparents cert of marriage, grandads occupation says
"67 Stoker Royal Navy"
I'm wondering what the 67 stands for, or have I mistranscribed it?

Hopefully this links to the certificate.
Cheers!  Angela.

Could it be a shortened version of his rank as  Stoker in the Navy???    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireman_%28steam_engine%29

I would have liked to say LS - Leading Stoker but I just do not see that!

I know he was a 2nd Class Stoker.
I'm not seeing any 67 related to being a RN Stoker.

It certainly looks like 67. Compare the 7 in Annie's address.

Yes and there is another matching 7 in the Far left column, to the left of the date of marriage.

I know it looks exactly like "67" given the other occurrences of "7", but could it possibly be 6/ Stoker (6 Shilling Stoker)?  The 1920 per diem rate for a leading stoker after 3 years was 6 shillings:

http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/LondonGazette/Pay_Rates_1920.html#Stoker

Edited to add: So I suppose I'm asking, did the person who completed the certificate form the number "67" exactly the same as "6/" - it's a bit of a leap, what do you think..?

Its a good theory.  My grandad specifically was a Special Service Stoker (second class).  I don't exactly know what that means.  Apparently there was a shortage of stokers joining the RN - because as a job, it sucked - so they offered people a special higher pay rate and they only had to do 5 years (or less) active in the first fleet and then they were in the navys equivalent of the reserves for 7 years.

My grandad joined the royal navy in mid 1918 after he left the army, and his rating had not changed on his navy service record.
Here is his record:

It looks as if he might have become a Stoker 1st Class on 15th Jan 1919.

The certificate is a copy of the original in the parish register so, while this may say 67, it could be a miscopy of the original. You will need to look at that if you want to work out what it might say.
