Title: Blinkhorn in Gloucestershire
Post by: JulianM on Monday 01 November 04 23:39 GMT (UK)
Hi

I'm trying to track down the offspring of Robert (1814-1888) Blinkhorn who was married to Eleanor and lived in Gloucester.  Their eldest son was also called Robert (born 1850 in Gloucester) and is mentioned as a master miller in the 1881 census but does not appear in 1901 census.  Could someone with access to the 1891 census look him up please?  I think Robert and Eleanor also had a daughter called Claire but wonder if someone could confirm this in the 1851 census?

Many thanks in advance

Julian

Hi Cardiff

You're right. Blinkhorn is an unusual name- there were only 482 of them in 1901 census!  I am unaware of any Blinkhorn males from Wales in the 1800/early 1900s so your connection may be interesting.  In the 1800s, Blinkhorns were mainly to be found in Lancashire (mainly), Cambridgeshire, Kent and Yorkshire.  My direct line was from Cambridge via Kent but there was a branch that moved to Gloucs.

Many thanks for the info.  I wasn't aware of Charles before and he isn't in the 1881 census in Gloucs nor in the 1901 at all.  So maybe he didn't survive childhood.  More work needed there!

I had a record of Clara but I had her as Claire (from a Canadian contact).  If she was only 1 week old, I guess the parents might her known her name correctly!.

Robert is in the 1881 census but is the only Blinkhorn living at 30 Midland Rd, Gloucester.  He was a master miller with 5 employees.  Many of the Kent Blinkhorns were millers too. He was 31 by then so maybe he never married.  Hence my interest in the 1891 census in case he was a late starter!.  Quite a few of the family emigrated to USA.

Kris

Many thanks for all your hard work this weekend.

It appears both  and Robert (son of Tom and Ellen) and his uncle Charles died young.

The house Tom live in in 1891 and 1901 was called Sandling, no doubt named after his grandfathers' mill at Sandling, Boxley, Kent.  Sadly when my mother (a "proper" Blinkhorn) went to search out the mill last month, she found it had burnt down only a few weeks before.

Interestingly Robert senior (1814-1888) was apparently a mayor in Gloucester.

Many thanks again.  I guess you are enjoying warmer weather than in the UK!

Julian

I realise that this post was made several years go, but for the benefit of any others interested in the Blinkhorn family in Gloucester, were you aware that there is a road called Blinkhorns Bridge Lane in Gloucester?  I believe that this may well be linked to this family for two reasons; a) The unusual name, b) the road has links to railway workers, and one of the family was linked to the railway wagon works in Gloucester as a director so I believe.
