I have just found out that my ancestor LEWIS HALLARD was on board HMS TERRIBLE in the 1861 census.
Does anyone know anything about the ship then or where it was on census night?
Grateful for any information.

Was Lewis born in Wellington Somerset?

Hi Sand !
I found this ....
HMS Terrible, a 1st class frigate, originally laid down as HMS Simoom, was built of wood by Mr. Oliver Lang and launched at Deptford 6 Feb1845. Of 1847 tons (builders measurement) or 3189 tons displacement, her engines were fitted by Maudsley & Co and developed 800 hp ; in addition to her paddle wheels she also used sail ; measured 236 ft long x 42 ft wide x 27 ft depth. She was disposed of in 1879.
Following the end of the Crimean War she doesn't appear to have done anything or been anywhere which warranted a mention in Wm. Clowes' History of the RN looking at the few notes I've collected on her career, she spent much of her time in the Mediterranean and surrounding area:
21 Oct 1847 Sir Charles Napier's Squadron, otherwise known as the
Experimental Squadron.
Summer, 1848, Trieste
30 Aug 1851 Mediterranean
17 Oct 1854 1st Bombardment of Sebastopol
1860 Mediterranean
1870 Devonport

On census night 1861 she was anchored in Corfu Roads, Greek Islands :D
If you google her, there'a quite a lot about her and the previous and subsequent HMS Terribles :D

Thanks everybody! I knew you would all come up trumps....
It was good to know that Lewis was sunning himself in the Med and it's good that we have some sunshine at long last.
Yes, Lewis was born in Wellington, Somerset, the son of Robert Hellard and Jane Chorley.

Um - sorry - but I think the ship on the picture Indolaman linked is the next HMS Terrible ?
I think the one we were speaking of was broken up in 1879 ?
