Hi Lizzie

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Happy Easter Lizzie,

Here is a little piece of information about the Parish of Painstown. A property called Oak Park is mentioned.
I wonder if it is still standing ???  http://www.from-ireland.net/lewis/car/painstown.htm

All the Best,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Interesting....I grew up in Carlow and never heard of Painstown.

Oak Park is now an Agricultural Research and Development centre run by Teagasc.  If any of you are eating Rooster potatoes, they were developed at Oak park.

Hiya Mary,

What did you do when you were being reared ??? Were you a bit of an idle critter ??? Did you not have a wee dander towards Painstown ??? Sure it is only a mile and three quarter up the road from Carlow town :D

I was on the phone for a while with a friend, living in the Canary Islands, earlier.
I have to search for his grandfather, born in the late 1800s, in Inverkeithing, Fifeshire.

Hi Chris,

Painestown obviously wasn't part of my "hunting" ground.  I did however often walk 4 miles to meet up with lads.  This was not because the lads were wonderful but the locals in this area didn't know me and therefore could not report me to my parents!!!

Hiya Mary,

The less said about your social life when you were a lass the better :D If anyone is interested please send Mary a PM :D I am sure she will explain all about the flora and fauna of Co. Carlow to you. Now may we please get on with finding some information about the C of I Church of Carlow with Painstown. I wonder whether the Carlow Central Library at Tullow Street would have a little book written by a local person that might have some information about this Church ??? http://www.library.ie/public/carlow.shtml This library does not have a catalogue for me to search :'( NI Libraries and the Linenhall Library in Belfast have a catalogue :D Any ideas about finding a catalogue for the books in Carlow library ???

Or perhaps Michael Purcell....a Carlovian with a huge knowledge on local history.  If you want his address please send me a PM and I will let you have it.

Good on you Mary :D

That local historian is an excellent idea. There are obviously advantages in being born a Carlowian :D It does not really matter that you walked 4 miles to meet the lads. You are making up for your dalliamces with them by showing a knowledge of the local residents. I am not going to ask :D

All the Best, Chris

Lizzie,
This name is all too familiar to me, as one of your posters replied, it is now known as Oak park, very close to Carlows GAA grounds if I recall. it is an old mansion on very extensive grounds owned at one time by the Cokes/Cookes of Painstown and then sold to the De Bruin family in the late 1700's.
I am a descendent of the Painstown Cookes. Oak park estate is owned now by the Irish government's department of agriculture, and on the grounds there is a church and graveyard, though rather old and run down. I will post the coordinates here for you, and you can copy and paste them to google maps, and you will see where Painstown once was. Hope I have been of help :)

Only reason people don't know painstown is that it's just called oak park. And only church there is the temple just off the oak house.
