Hello All,
Has any one any information about the following family:
Mark Ellwood bap 25/4/1734 Dufton married Anne Loadman 8/6/1756 Brough/u/Stainmore.
Their children were:
Margaret bap 9/5/1758 Dufton, unmarried in 1787,
Agnes bap 20/9/1759 Dufton,
Mary bap 1761 Dufton,
Mark bap 19/4/1764 Dufton,
Thomas bap 27/5/1766 Brough/u/stainmore
Michael bap 29/4/1770 B/U/S
John bap 11/9/1768 B/U/S
William bap 20/9/1772 Dufton.
Michael I think married Mary Atkinson 7/12/1795 St Michael's Appleby & for a second time Hannah Robinson 3/9/1839 also St Michael's. Michael was a butcher & is in the 1829 directory.
William I think married Anne Simpson 27/4/1794 St Michael's Appleby. William was a farmer, but don't know where.
Is anyone else researching this family? I would be very grateful for any extra information.
Regards,
Gillian

Hi
I have a copy of Appleby at Work - a list of directory entries. For Ellwood it has:
John jnr blacksmith Crackenthorpe 1858
John, bootmaker Long Marton 1884,
John, farmer Crackenthorpe 1811,
John, Publican, Crown and Cushion 1904-5
Thomas joiner 1778 , wheelwright (No entry under it)
Thomas Parker Ellwood, farmer, Hilton Mill 1884-5
Thomas Parker " miller Hilton Mill 1884-5
William, bootmaker Bongate 1884-5, 13 Bongate 1905
You might be able to claim some of them.

Hi Andrea,
Thanks for the reply.
Thomas Parker Ellwood is definately one of my Ellwoods. He is the brother of my gg grandmother Isabella Ellwood. They were both born at Blasterfield Farm Crosby Ravensworth, children of John Ellwood & Margaret Parker. I'm not too sure about the others. My Ellwoods were mainly farmers.
Strange that Michael Ellwood the butcher of Bongate is not listed!!
Thanks again,
Gillian
-
I noticed some Parkers too. Do you want those? I shall be in that area next week if you want photos.
Andrea
-
Hi Andrea,
I would love a photo of Hilton Mill, thanks very much!
My Parkers lived in Soulby but beforehand must have been in Warcop as Margaret Parker was baptised there in 1817.
Gillian
-
Hi
I was not very successful with pictures of Hilton Mill as it seems to have gone! It is marked clearly on the map but when you get there there is a modern house called Mill Corner with a mill stone built into the front wall, an older farm behind it and a bit further along the road some cottages called Mill cottages - but not the original mill as far as we could see. It is possible one house is built on the site or an older bit has been extended. I did take some photos so send me a personal message with your email address and I will let you have them. It was quite surprising that the mill shown on the map is not actually on the river either.
A lovely village though.

Hi,
Was your Margaret Parker married twice as I have a Margaret Parker in my tree born1817 married to Septimus Richardson from Morland. They had a son Septimus Parker. The father died 1838 in the year the son was born then the son died 1859 at Kendal. She married again fairly quickly and I think that was to an Ellwood.
Septimus is living with his Parker grandparents in 1851 Census.
-
Hi Jeffrey,
Yes Margaret Parker did marry twice, firstly to Septimus Richardson and then John Ellwood in 1840 Kirkby Stephen. I have lots of info about them if you are interested. Young Septimus, son of Margaret died aged about 20ish. I have his funeral card.
What are your interests in Margaret Parker? Margaret and John Ellwood are my ggg grandparents.
Gillian
-
Hi Gillian,
We have corresponded before and you were kind enough to send me a copy of Septimus's funeral card - didn't realise it was you when I responded. I love the funeral card it makes me feel really sad he died so young!
Judy
-
Hi Judy,
Yes it's me!
Glad you liked the card.

Hello
My grandmother was born Kathleen Joyce Ellwood in 1924. I can trace my Ellwood family back to Mark Ellwood (Born 1734) and Ann Loadman. I've seen a comment somewhere on here that says this Mark is descended from Edmund Ellwood a Yeoman farmer who lived in Dufton in the 1500s with his wife Ellyn - his details are on a website by a Mr B Morrison (another descendent) I'm currently trying to figure out where we fit in.
Can provide more details of my family if you'd like.
-
Hi Jos,
Send me a personal message with your email address and I will send you an Ellwood tree.

My wife is descended from Ellwoods of whitehaven, and we have only recently discovered a connection to the Ellwoods of Dufton, so I'm coming late to this discussion, but we would like to make contact with other Ellwood researchers.

Hi,
How are you connected to Edward & Elyne Ellwood of Dufton? I didn't find the link in your webpage.
My connection is:
son of Edward: Edmund 1577 - 1657
Christopher 1598 - 1664
Marke 1640 - 1725
Mark 1685 - 1739
Mark 1734 - 1805
Regards,
Gillian
-
Ours is as above through:
son of Edward: Edmund 1577 - 1657
Christopher 1598 - 1664
then
Christopher (1631-1676)
Edmund (1667-1730)
Thomas (1697-1785)
Thomas (1715-1801)
Thomas (1753-1826)
Robert (1789-1862)
John (1819-1892)
Thomas (1845-1914)
Would be interested in knowing how your generations with the Marks fits in -- we've seen some claiming descent through Marks where the mother would have had to be 60 when the son was born.

Thanks very much for this.
But it seems that Mark was not the only child to survive. Anne who married Thomas Rushton lived to over 80, and had at least seven children, possibly more. Many of them died young too, but at least two, Ellwood Rushton and Yarker Rushton, married and had children of their own. I can give you more details if you are interested.
-
Hi Steve,
Yes I would appreciate the details.
What I should have said the only surviving son!!! Mary Ellwood, Michael's dau, married to John Dufton in 1838.
Where did you get the family details of John son of Mark?? Regards, Gillian
-
I'll send details by e-mail. Please consider joining our Ellwood forum at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ellwood/
A question: did Mark Ellwood, b. 1764, marry Elizabeth Hodgson on 12 Mar 1781?
He would have been a bit young, but I suppose it is not impossible.
-
Hi Steve,
I do not know if Mark (son of Mark & Anne) marr Elizabeth. I agree he seems a bit young. Maybe he was baptised as a child & not a baby. There is another researcher I know who is descended from Mark & Elizabeth. She has gone through every Mark Ellwood with a fine tooth comb!! I'll see if I can find her details.
Yes, I'll join your forum.

Gillian

I've been having a look at the Duftons - will send you what I have found, if you like.

Gillian,
I see that you are interested in the Parker family of Soulby.
Does this include William Parker?
I have a business letter that he wrote in 1848.
I would be pleased to send you a transcript if it is of any interest.
Cliff
-
Hi Cliff,
Yes I have the Parkers of Soulby in my tree. William Parker is the father of Margaret who married John Ellwood in 1840 Kirkby Stephen.
William originally came from Bedale in Yorkshire. Don't know what brought him to Soulby!
I would love a transcript of his letter.
Thanks very much!

they would be there. the earliest stones appeared to be about 1815 so not sure where any earlier ones would be . Fred

Borrenthwaite is just south of the A66. On the right as you are heading out of Brough up to the summit where the Roman fort is.
I think Brough under Stainmore is so called to differentiate between the old market town of Brough, on the A66, and Church Brough and Brough Sowerby which are both very close.
It is a lovely area. We have spent many happy, if chilly, holidays there.

Thanks for the info.
Do you reckon that Gale House and Gallows house are the same place?
It is interesting that Anne Simpson's address was noted as Gallos House at her marriage to William Ellwood!
Will send a PM.

I was also in the Stainmore area in July 2103. I spent three weeks wandering around the area searching for my new found ancestors. I was able to go through Borrenthwaite, which is on the market.
It had been assumed that with the death of George Michael Dalston-Ewbanke (oldest child of George William D-E and Mary Ann Annas Ravensworth D-E) not having had any children, that the long Ewbanke line associated with Borrenthwaite had died out. That is not so. My father was the older child of George Michael's younger sister Constance Annie Dalston-Ewbanke and I am his oldest son.
I believe I have found most of the readily available factual information about the Dalston-Ewbanke's but I'm hoping there is someone who may have old family records (I've been to Kendall archives), diaries or any other information. Can anyone help?
I can't find George Michael's executors/trustees - Arnott Son & Dodds in Newcastle - and so can't find how his estate was disposed of.
I can't find any records of the unwinding of the Marriage Settlement od Mary Ann Annas Ravensworth D-E either - that was J Ingram Dawson and other in Barnard Castle.
Can anyone help?
-
Hi and welcome to rootschat
You dont give any dates for the Dalton Ewbanks
Do you know when dalton was added to the name as Ewbank goes back to the 1500's
in Appleby and infact still are here
regards
Westmorland
-
Thanks for replying.
It seems "my" branch of the Ewbanke's - those who lived at Borrenthwaite - were most concerned to keep the name going.
When the mother (an only child) of Mary Ann Annas Ravensworth Ewbanke (MAARDE) married on 7/7/1866 her husband had to change his name from Matthew Robinson Wilson to Ewbanke (Times 2/5/1867).
Their only child MAARDE seems to have tried the same thing, but her husband to be, Dr George William Dalston (note spelling) appears to have agreed only to add her name to his. Hence the Dalston-Ewbanke. Their wedding was on 23/9/1890.
By 29/7/1963, the DOD of their son George Michael, in a legal sense the name was gone.
Their daughter, my grandmother, had my father out of wedlock in 1913 - as occurred again in 1916. The solicitor Dawson was the key. When my father found out that the parents who brought him up were not his biological parents he wrote to Dawson who replied telling him "let sleeping dogs lie, you'll never find out." But Dawson wasn't as smart as he obviously thought he was. He can't be blamed for the internet, but he used a relative of his wife to adopt my Dad, so his name was known and I had my trail!!
When on Stainmore last July/August I was told the name of my grandfather - the locals knew!!
Long reply to short question, sorry.
