Title: Pond: Blandford
Post by: snaggletooth on Monday 06 March 06 08:57 GMT (UK)
I'm looking into the family of Samuel Pond, b. 1857 in Blandford.

All I know about him is that he married Sarah Emma Burt in Southbroom St James, Wiltshire in 1877, and there was one child that I can identify.

I believe Sam was an ironmonger, and it may have been him (or his dad?) Mayor of Blandford in the 1850s.

Does anyone have any info about Sam's parents/siblings, please

Golly, that looks like the real deal. Charlotte is a name still in use.

Thank you indeed...I'm still trying to find my way around the UK BDM scene.

Thanks for the info.

It looks like William married Charlotte Self (?1842)...but is there any way I can be certain that this Charlotte is his wife, not his sister?

Hi Paul

I guess you can't be sure at this stage - it mainly depends on where you got the 1842 marriage reference from.  Best bet would be to plough through (a copy of) the parish registers.

Incidentally, looking at the 1861 snapshot posted by SnowGoose, I wonder whether Charlotte S Pond was actually Charlotte L Pond.  There's the birth registration for a Charlotte Louisa Pond in Blandford in the March quarter of 1845 (vol 8 page 21) followed by a marriage registration, also in Blandford, for the same name in the December quarter of 1870 (vol 5a page 568).

In any event, this looks like your Samuel's birth registration:
Samuel POND Dec qtr 1856 Blandford vol 5a page 241

Dave.

I think Samuel would have struggled to be mayor in 1857 and born in 1856! I guess it may be his uncle though. There is a Samuel Pond (brazier, 75, b Weymouth) living in Blandford by himself in 1851.

Nearby (HO107/1853/236/8) William is still alive:
William Pond, 75, plumber employing 2 men, b Weymouth
Ann, 74, wife, b Weymouth
Edward, 49, son, plumber, b Weymouth
Charles, 29, son, plumber, b Blandford
Lucy, 27, dau, b Blandford
Elizabeth Bartlett, 10, niece, b Ireland

The fact that William and Samuel were both b Weymouth suggests they may be brothers.
I noticed that a William Pond was mayor in 1842, so perhaps his brother followed him.

You may find this link useful:

(Niece may just mean a younger relation; I have seen it used for a granddaughter before).

Thanks to the last 2 posters...a great help indeed!

Put the mayoral thing down to a vivid imagination. I maybe imagined it was his paw or uncle.

I'm now trying to trace those people forward - maybe they married?

But let me bore you to death with a story. One of the downstream Ponds came to Australia (obviously), and married a lady named Brunton. Her brother also married a Pond - but were they related? The second Ponds came from Cornwall, with not much "leakage" into other counties. Family reunions in Oz must have been quite confusing...

When you say you want to trace the tree forward, do you literally mean every branch?  Is there one branch you already know about?
Blandford seems stuffed with Ponds in every census, so a complete search would take quite a while!
For instance, you say you know one of Samuel's children (presumably from the 1881 census on IGI).
His family were there in 1891:
RG12/1634/50/23
Samuel, 34, ironmonger
Sarah, 41  b Devizes
Frank, 12
Percy, 8
Burt, 6
Donald, 5
Lucy, 1    all rest b Blandford

and 1901:
RG13/1972/31/5
Samuel, 44, ironmonger and agricultural engineer
Sarah Emma, 47
Lucy Charlotte, 10
Edith Laura, 9
Dorothy Gertrude, 7
+ a governess; they were moving up in the world!

But lots of earlier members of the family are there as well.
For instance Charles (bc1821), a plumber, is there in 1861/71/81 with his wife Mary Hunt Pond  (b1821) and children Lydia (1853) Emma (1855) and Lucy (1856).

I'd like to try...but commonsense tells me that it would be a neverending journey.

Let me lay out the main line I'm following:

Sam Pond (1856/7) married Sarah Emma Burt 1877. She was from Devizes.

They had at least 1 child - Samuel Francis born 1879 (the Frank in your note?) . He came to Australia, and I know about him from then on. I didn't know about the rest of the kids. But Burt fits in nicely.

The problem is the UK BMD way of not showing who married who, which will temper just how far/at what cost I want to go.

Thanks for all that info...boy, am I glad someone told me about Rootschat!

You will find a lot of the early Pond baptisms here (children of William and Ann), proving that William and Samuel are brothers. Weymouth didn't have a church until c1830; Wyke Regis was the church then: http://www.dorset-opc.com/WykeRegis.htm
And to whet your appetite still further, in 1851 Elizabeth Pond, 67, unmarried annuitant, b Weymouth is living in Melcombe Regis; and Charles Pond, 60, b Weymouth, plumber is living in London with his wife, Mary, and children Sarah, 23, and Charles, 20.

Charles Pond was also Mayor of Blandford, in 1872 and 1878 - unless there were two Charles Ponds??

Best wishes

From earlier replies (rjknott, dave francis) we know a bit about William and Ann Pond and their children. But I wonder if there were more?

The next chapter (maybe!) in my research came in the form of a cemetery newsletter. If you go to http://www.brightoncemetorians.org/Newsletter/2005/TC1.pdf you can read the article at pp4-5.

I've been looking thru Dorset pages for Sarah and Anne Pond, the two ladies up the top of the family diagram. But so far, I've not made any connection, and I'm unsure how to go about tracing stuff pre-1841. Suggestions welcome!

The Gills came to Australia in 1852, and founded a dynasty. They were nurserymen, and Gills Nurseries are still (successfully) in business in Victoria.

I have just returned from visiting Blandford in June 2014 and saw the Blandford Museum's display on the Pond Family. I also saw a photo of William Pond born 1776 and Charles Pond his son both deacons, in the Blandford United Reformed Church.
I have been researching the Pond family as I am a descendant of Ann Pond born 1806 who married John Simmonds & came to Australia in 1852.
I would be pleased to swap information if I knew how to other Pond family members.

Are you still looking for info on the Pond family of Blandford Forum?
My Grandmother was Edith Laura Pond and I know a little of the family history in BF, starting with three brothers leaving London to escape the Great Plague in 1665.
And going back just a little further, if her stories are to be believed, coming over to England  from Normandy in 1066.

I am very interested in early history of the Pond Family of Blandford. My ancestor, Ann Pond married John Simmonds and they immigrated to Australia. Ann was the sister of William Pond the grandfather of Edith Laura "your grandmother" My records go back to William Pond who married Ann Fowler in 1773 in Wyke Regis
Perhaps you could attach some details in a reply. I am happy to attach any of my research into the Pond family if you have any questions.

I guess that makes us some form of cousin, so hi cousin.
Somewhere I have a family tree that she wrote out on the back of a large envelope, it might take me a long time to unearth it, but when I do I will find a way to send you a copy.
My sister is the one more interested in our various ancestors so I'll show her your kind offer.
Life is full of regrets and one of mine is that I didn't ask more questions while they could be answered, but EL did leave a number of diaries which my sister keeps. I'll ask her if there are any titbits that will be of use to you.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the old country

Are you still active on here, Kijeda? I also descend from John Simmonds and Ann Pond, right down the line of the John Simmonds. You?
