Hi folks!
I would be grateful for an info/ advice which enables me to find the following relatives
Annie CAMERON b 1819 Ross & Cromarty Annie married (unk) FRASER and had daughters Margaret b 1860 and Jessie
Kenneth CAMERON b 1811 Kenneth married (unknown) and had children Alick, Rory, Kenneth and a daughter
Kate CAMERON b 25 Feb 1833 Fodderty, Ross and Cromarty Kate married (unk) SUTHERLAND and had Alick and Catherine
Went to Dunedin, NZ. Set up a cafe called the Highland Welcome. Moved on to Adelaide.
The dates of birth are approximate and the information was taken from a family tree made in the 1960s. So far, it has proven quite accurate, but unfortunately it didn't include many dates! Parents of the brother and sisters were Alexander CAMERON and Margaret (nee CAMERON). - sorry, no idea whether marriages/children were in Scotland, NZ or OZ!
Can anyone tell me anything about how they got to New Zealand (and/or Adelaide) and what became of them?
Thanks in anticipation!
Arranroots ;)
Modified: to include children & married names of the ladies

Hi Ann
Thanks for the PM
Here is what I know of the family
Kenneth (born Rosskeen, Ross and Cromarty c1811 - 18??) = Unknown
Children Alick, Rory, Kenneth, daughter
Ken jr reputedly had 7 children
Family moved to Dunedin, then Adelaide
Kate (born Fodderty, Ross and Cromarty 25 Feb1833 - 1908) = SUTHERLAND
?Stayed in NZ
Children Catherine and Aleck SUTHERLAND
Her daughter Catherine SUTHERLAND = Hugh BROWN
William, Catherine, Margaret (b1898), Mary, Jessie BROWN
Margaret BROWN = Unk STOKES
Annie (c1819 - ) = FRASER
Children Margaret (1860 - 1939), Jessie
Moved to Dunedin and on to Adelaide
Margaret = Unknown MASON, children Lewis and dau
The daughter = Unk DASTINE
Lewis had 8 children
Looks as though the best bet is going to be for the death of Kate SUTHERLAND in New Zealand (if she did stay there!) or the births of the MASON children.
Please do get better soon - these people will keep!

Hi Arranroots
i popped into the library.. to see what they had, as i am sure they would have more since i last went 15 yrs ago...lol
Its all on Fiche..
the earliest NZ electoral roll was 1868-69
dont have a lot of details on them.'
only names that was there
CAMERON, Alexander of dunedin house hold Dowling st house
CAMERON, Alaxander dunedin freehold section melville st, north
Dunedin section off kings st.
CAMERON, Duncan dunedin freehold section 4, b. 29 Dunedin.
No death of any of those names in 1848 - 1858
There is lots of Cameron's on passenger list, from 1852 -1860 they are from all over that area, there is about 30 , so if you think that may be of help. alot of them have Cameron Mr...... so it would be a matter checking the passinger ship records. for each one. the lib should have a machine to take a copy of the fiche. so i could do that , bring it home and type it out to you,
Otago R C Marrages 1855 -1920
plus presbyterian marrages 1848 - 1920
Anglican marriages 1841 - 1920
if you think any of these are worth looking at, i can go back in, i only could find a half hour park, next time hopefully i can stay longer..
Good luck..
best wishes
Ann
-
Thank you Ann - naughty girl though, you should be home getting better! ::) ;D
I found in my research yesterday what a popular place Dunedin was/is for the Scots - I wonder why my lot didn't like it, LOL?
Passenger lists sound to labour intensive to even ask you to look at: if I had some dates it might help. Have a few Scotlandspeople credits left, so will see if I can narrow it down at all.
I don't know whether the Otago BMDs have been filmed by the IGI, but as I mentioned I haven't managed to find any events for this family online - hope I haven't missed anything obvious.
They would have been Presbyterian - along with the majority of Dunedin, no doubt.
If you fancy another visit (when you are fit!) I think the BMDs are most likely to produce a result. Would there have been land claims for folk wanting to set up a cafe??
Many thanks again, Arranroots ;)
-
Hi A
Are you rolling your eyes at me, :o lol starting to feel better, just a awful cough now.
I will go back in to the Lib , had to get a feel for what was there first, nothing really earlier than that.
the passenger list had all camerons together etc for thoses years, so that makes it easier, its just if the only have a Mr .. and no name it doesnt help.
maybe someone will know, but was there a port in Adelaide in the 1800's or did they go in to Melbourne ???
your second posting was easier to follow, so i will work off that.
yes love to know why they moved on to adelaide. there would have not been much there in those times..
My family did it the other way around, England, melbourne then auckland, to tauranga. (to fight in the maori wars)
happy hunting
Best wishes
Ann
This is not going to be a 2 sec job.... :) might take a few visits... so bare with me.
-
I am more than happy to wait, Ann - just as long as you are enjoying it! If it gets too much, please say & I will start saving for my trip!!
Will post any other clues I come across on this thread - shouldn't take up much space!
A ;)

Ive made up the spare bed for you, and we can travel down to Dunedin together, but not going down there in winter, hate the cold.

Hi Ann
You have been busy! I am dismayed at the number of CAMERONs etc - it is looking like a needle in a haystack job, isn't it? Added to the fact that Kris couldn't find any of them arriving in South Australia and my complete lack of dates...
Thanks so much for looking - have a day off! ;D
The Kenneth CAMERON ROC looks promising: ROC = Ross and Cromarty, which is where my lot were from and he was born in 1811. I wonder if the record suggests he immigrated to NZ in 1858? Will have a look at the 1851 census & see if I can identify him, but that is quite a task in itself!
Harriet, thanks also for your help. All contributions welcome and I will have a look at the links. My BIRDs are found mainly in Wales and later in Bedminster, but I am not sure where they originated (pre 1841) - possibly Gloucestershire?
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

i remembered when i was doing the house work that the info on kenneth was from people coming from scotland to dunedin. ( there is lots)

Hi there,
me again
I have been to Waikouaiti, its was otago's first harbour and the site of a whaling station, established in 1838.
Just up the road is matanaka, which we walked to, there is a stable , storehouse, granary, school house and a three seater loo, are among the oldest surviving in the south Is,
It was a really long walk as the gate was shut to keep sheep in, up a really big hill, just about killed me.. my girls couldnt make it, they had to go back to the campervan.
Took a photo out there off a boat made of stick and skins, but i am in the photo so i am not posting it. another one of names written on a door, dates where in the 1800's , so interesting, worth the walk.

I don't know what to say!! Overwhelmed! so sorry to have been inconsiderately asleep while you were discovering all that!
I think there might be a letter winging its way to a gt gt granddaughter - is she likely to be in the phonebook or Electoral register so we can check she is still at the same address?
I don't think "Thank You" quite covers it - you have done a sterling job and I am very grateful!
(Thought for a moment, while reading your last but one reply, that you had dashed off to the south island in your campervan while I was sleeping, LOL! Glad to realise it was a few years back!)
I am going to have fun with all this info & will try to locate marriage & birth info in Scotland to go with it.
Thanks so much Ann - I will make you a medal! :D :D :D
A ;)

hi there,
I am so pleased that you are please,
i think there is still work i could do in that area, but i will wait for you to say, just let me know, as now we have found them, you can sort out which ones i follow up, but there is some great web sites, plus the ones from Harriet. cemetery one looks good .
I have check the white pages and there is still a K Tatlock at 15 Seymour ave, nelson, with her phone number..
happy hunting,
so glad i could help after all you have done for me..

You have to start saving , the south Is is a truly beautiful place.. we went there in April 2004, 10 days in a campervan... very different to the north is, where i live.

That sounds like a brilliant idea! I know we have rellies in Tuaranga and Adelaide too, so could do the complete tour - if Scotlandspeople don't get all my money first! LOLOL

Have armed myself with toast & coffee, so will start work now!
Looks like one of the Rodericks might have died in WWI?

hi there.
Please keep me informed how you get on.
Feel i have got to know these people now.

Well the children match nicely - assuming Alick is Alexander and Rory is Roderick.
The names are all common in this family, apart from Forbes which is prob from the mother's side.
I will certainly let you know about anything that comes out of all this. This thread will run and run, LOL! :D
I hope you are having a nice rest this evening after your endeavours?
Will think of some more questions for you tomorrow, if that is OK? Easy ones, I promise!

i am so excited, you are my first customer... its made my day, finding something, didn't think i was going to have any luck.. looking for a needle in a hay stack.

You should see the big grin on my face!!
Have found the marriage of Kenneth & Margaret McLeod, but since it is before registration began, there is not a lot of detail.
(When you write addresses in NZ, do you need to add which island?)
told you the questions would get easier now!!

dont normally put which Is , but it wouldn't hurt....
i would love to visit Nelson, so when you come , we will pop in there, lol ,on the way to Dunedin.
have you written the letter already? you are going to have a busy day, we wont see you for a couple of days now...... ???
Nelson is at the top of the south Is. bit hard to get to, i think.

I think we will need a helicopter, LOL!
Next Rootschat Meet in Kiwi-a-go-go-land then? (oops, that came from a book my daughter bought - hilarious, must find the title for you!)

Did you get my PM?
Thanks for those, you are right I do need the family Bible! Will write to her as soon as I hear from the other source (fingers crossed!). Or maybe sooner if I get impatient, LOL!
The Margaret you found above looks interesting - maybe we should have been looking for CAMPBELL instead of SUTHERLAND all along?
Will let you know when I hear something.

No, I don't know about that - thank you!
Letters of Administration suggesting he died about that date?
Have you any experience of asking about such records? I wonder what they might let you have (and how much, LOL!) Did you find the record online?
Many thanks again
Arranroots ;)
p.s. modified the e-mail address you provided to prevent spamming

The information is on line, if you type in Archway Simple Search, you should have no trouble locating it. When emailing Dunedin archives just send the information quoting the persons details and all the other details for agency series etc I included. Everything that appears on the files will be included, as for cost I have no idea, that will depend on how many pages of info there is. Good Luck

Hi folks!
I would be grateful for an info/ advice which enables me to find the following relatives
Annie CAMERON b 1819 Ross & Cromarty Annie married (unk) FRASER and had daughters Margaret b 1860 and Jessie
I'm wondering if anyone found out anything about Jessie Cameron such as birth/death/marriage details? I am seeking information on a Jessie Cameron. She was likely from Waikouaiti. I think there were more than one Cameron family there.
Roderick, Kenneth, Rory etc and the Campbells from that area- Waikouaiti/Palmerston/Goodwood etc. I have come across a number of references to them.
The other family likely headed by an Alexander Cameron.
Jessie worked for some time at the Seacliff Asylum (Seacliff was the next town from down the coast south) probably in the late 1880s-early 1890s and she married and Alexander Aitcheson whose family were from Waikouaiti. By the end of the 1890s they were situated in Wellington.
Jessie later sued the city of Wellington and won when she tripped over a gas pipe in 1914 and became crippled. I have been going around in circles with this for ages as the is a dearth of paperwork - no marriage record, no records for their three children, unsure of dates of birth and death which gives me no leads to crack this Cameron branch of the family tree.
-
Ooh these names all sound very familiar - I'll need to get back into my tree to see how they might fit - remind me if I don't get back to you quite soon (busy day today!!)
Thanks for your post - most kind.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hi Arranroots,
This is the link to the file you want
http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=13286144
It might pay to start a new thread with a Dunedin Archives look up and hopefully a kind chatter will view the file and take digital photos of it,the other way would be to enail a request to Archives, from memory the charge is about $25.

What is Waikaiki? Do you mean Waikouaiti - or Waitati, which was to the South of closer to Dunedin?
-
Well the children match nicely - assuming Alick is Alexander and Rory is Roderick.
Rory was definitely Roderick Cameron's nickname. He recorded himself in the journal for the Waikouaiti Old Settler's Picnic in 1913 as Rory Cameron, and as having arrived on the ship "Pirate" in 1858, and then the year he died he did the same as having arrived 1859. The passenger list for the Pirate of 1859 shows several Camerons aboard but whether any others were relatives is a question.
-
I would be grateful for an info/ advice which enables me to find the following relatives
Kenneth CAMERON b 1811 Kenneth married (unknown) and had children Alick, Rory, Kenneth and a daughter
Can anyone tell me anything about how they got to New Zealand (and/or Adelaide) and what became of them?
I've been combing through stuff on this topic still trying to find how Jessie Cameron fits in. There's a lot of missing stuff so it's hard to tell if she descended from any of the Cameron kids that arrived 1858 (if at all). Obviously not from Margaret Cameron Campbell's branch, or, as it l turns out - from Alick's (Alexander's) branch. So that leaves Rory (Roderick) and Kenneth.
It looked like Alexander (Alick) was Alexander Cameron, married to Alexandrina (nee unknown). There is no marriage record in NZ indicating that they were married before they arrived. Since she does not appear in the manifest for the Strathallan in 1858 there is either no record of their marriage (not so unusual for NZ BDM for things to be misspelled or missing altogether) - or the other possibility is that Alexandrina came separately ly to NZ possibly on The Pirate with Rory (Roderick) in 1858. It is a bit curious as to why Rory came separately as an 11 year old on a separate ship and it makes sense he would be chaperoned by an adult. I'm getting born 1840 from other sources so I am more likely to go with that and assume the person that wrote it on the thread earlier accidentally hit a 9 instead of a 0. That would have made him around 18 when he emigrated. I'll just put it down to a missing marriage record in that case.
Anyway this is what I have found: Alexander Cameron, 1834-1913. Native of Ross-Shire, Scotland. Retired Farmer, last address Goodwood. Wife Alexandrina Cameron 1834-1876.
Children:
First born was
Roderick Cameron 1862-1947.
Married Johan/Johanna Hellen Miller (Elsie) in 1898 and had a daughter Johanna Hellen in 1900, and a son Roderick Magnus Grant Cameron in 1907 (d 1971).
Then:
John 1866-
Kenneth 1865-
Alexander Jr. 1869-1888.
Margaret (Maggie) 1871-1887
George Donald (Donald) 1873-1892
All Lived in Flag Swamp, Palmerston, Flag Swamp/Hawksbury was sort of halfway between Waikouaiti and Palmerston. Obviously that is where the farm was. Alexander Sr, Jr, Alexandrina and Maggie all buried in the same plot at Waikouaiiti Cemetery. Alick lived in Goodwood after 1910 with Roderick and his wife on their property named "Lochinver" and that's where he died.
You weren't specific about which one of the siblings supposedly had the cafe/left for Adelaide. If you know, please tell as that will cut out at least one line of inquiry (for me, anyway).

I'm also going to rule out Kenneth Forbes Cameron.
Children with Margaret Reid:
Malcolm Cameron 1895 -
Margaret Annie Cameron 1897 -
Kenneth Donald Cameron 1900 -
Finlay Alexander Cameron 1901 -
Catherine Jessie Cameron 1902 -
Florence Lilian Cameron 1904-1996
Collin Alan Cameron 1907 -
Forbes Ewen Cameron 1910 -
Jean Cecily Cameron 1911
Heather Grace Cameron 1917-2008, married William Basel Hagan (1911 - 1983), one known daughter.
That leaves Roderick. Whom I get a feeling didn't marry or have any children, so...generationally Jessie Cameron Aitcheson does not fit in anywhere in this family (she was likely born between the mid 1960s and mid 1870s) unless "Jessie" was a nickname and her government name was something else - all too common in those days and even used a lot for record-keeping. Looks like I will be starting from square one looking at other Cameron families in the area.

Oh wow - such a lot of information!
Thanks for going to so much trouble - it will take me a while to go through it all.
Also sorry for late reply, I have a genuine excuse!
Kind regards, Arranroots :)

Hi, I don't know why I am not getting notifications on this thread. Anyway, no problem. I hope it is helpful in some way to your research. I am no closer to finding the answer to my Cameron issue.
