Title: mcnamee brothers from ireland
Post by: runningbear on Friday 05 May 06 00:59 BST (UK)
patrick mcnamee arrived in australia around about 1910, he was aged 25 and was from belfast,  could anyone help to verify his arrival in Australia?

could they find the boat he arrived on?

in 1927 his brother peter also came across from belfast, could anyone help to verify this?

could they find the boat he arrived on?

have searched the Australia BMD and have info on their families but no info on their arrival!

Hi

The passenger records that you are looking for are not available to search online like the earlier years, however, there is a Patrick McNamee on the National Archive website who enlisted in NSW (First World War).

www.naa.gov.au   Click on Recordsearch, then Search as Guest and enter name in search window.

Patrick Joseph McNamee, born Belfast, NOK Maggie McNamee

Also,

Ernest McNamee born 24 Feb 1920 Belfast, NOK Peter McNamee

The digitised copies may be requested by clicking on the control symbol and click request copy.  They will be available to look at in a few weeks time.

If these turn out to be connected there is also information on the Embarkation Roll and Nominal Roll (First World War only)

http://www.awm.gov.au/database/nroll.asp

You can search the NSW bdm's online where you will be able to order certificates    www.bdm.nsw.gov.au

Hope this turns out to be your family

hi cazay, yes this is my family, i know of their children and of their deaths, what i could not find when i was searching through records at the bmd was how many children peter brought over from belfast and if patrick was on his own when he arrived in australia?

Death certificates in Australia list all children born to the parents, so that should give you an answer.

Tomorrow I can check some passenger records for you, but can't promise I will find anything.  For these years some people are only mentioned by Mr, Mrs, Miss, Mstr etc.

hi bob, patrick joseph macnamee, born belfast 1885, was in australia in 1910, he no doubt arrived at sydney, his father was patrick and his mother was martha, but i think he gave his sister's name as his next of kin, which is suprising as his mother was still alive, margaret mcnamee  later became margaret houston in 1912, he fathered two sons before he got married in 1916

Hi joebhoy  :)

OzyBob is spot on, you should contact the National Archives of Australia and see if they can help you track down your arrivals.  They should be most helpful with the later arrival - the earlier one may be recorded in the State archives.  Try www.records.nsw.gov.au and contact their reference service for assistance.

They will definitely be recorded somewhere, especially as they arrived in the 20th century.

Cheers
Prue

yes bob, just as prue points out, your spot on there mate! as far as i am led to believe patrick joseph  was in the aif, and went to india? during ww1, it's his arrival that's doing my nut in, his and peter's, there's seem to be easy access to corresponding matters regarding their live's in australia but it is difficult to get there arrival, a few people earlier on this board have tried for me their wonderful efforts returned the same as me, empty-handed, i seem to be looking at all the wrong places or get side-tracked when i enter most sites, no doubt those experierenced researchers can tell of my imaturity in genealogy, totally lost in australian records. peter mcnamee  came over with children but how many? did he join the aif too? i deeply appreciate all the help i am having on this board, thank you.

Hi again Joe  :)

What I meant by my post was that you should contact the archives (national and state), which you can do by email, for information about arrival documentation for your men.  The archives will hold the passenger lists, it's just a matter of whether they are in the national archives or the state ones.

Cheers

right on the nose again bob, ernest mcnamee  son of peter, well done, if you cannot find any other children born in ireland to peter that kinda opens up a new story!!! it means he arrived earlier to australia than i first thought, as with prue saying about the archives i am sure i was in there about 2 months ago and asked to be sent a copy, still waiting, also waiting for documents to be opened, 2 months now! don't know what i've done wrong?? is it a waiting game? i registered as a guest and tried to find their arrival but found nothing. regarding peter's family i will now have to search for their birth in australian records
Title: Re: mcnamee brothers from ireland

Hi Joe,
The archives (national, at least) don't have everything described and indexed online, so with reference enquiries the reference officer will have to search high and low for potentially relevant documents, and then go through them all to find out whether the info you want is in there.
Sometimes something is indexed online, but "not yet examined" - everything that is in the archives has to be examined by an access examiner, it's just a routine thing, and after they have examined it it is usually "open" and can be accessed by the public.
Unfortunately there are  limited numbers of staff who do this, and thousands of people like you and me who request stuff, so it can take a long time for your request to get seen to.
They will get there eventually!  :D

so re-valuating all the comments on this thread, i am left to assume that between 1920 and 1927 peter mcnamee  arrived in Sydney port with his wife Catherine and his son Ernest, but i still cannot verify this, anybody help?

thanks Jen, is that 1/9/56?, i had a wee look at Ellis island site last night, there was 25 different patrick mcnamee's, the closest one i could find arrived on the 5th may 1909, but the site only dates to 1924, there was no arrival for peter in that website, so i will need to look somewhere else now for 1925 onwards, anybody any idea?

this information  will be only as accurate  as the person who gives it !

Hi Joe,

I think the National Archives of Australia is your best bet. I know you are waiting on a response from them but I would send them an email again to bring your request to the notice of someone. I was waiting and waiting for some info and as soon as I contacted them again, was sent the papers immediately. Remember...."he who makes the most noise".......!!

http://www.naa.gov.au/publications/research_guides/guides/immig/pages/chapter12.htm#a

On this link you can see what Immigration records are held including Passport details etc.

Can't wait to find him so we can all stop dreaming of the McNamee brothers from Ireland...LOL ;)

Good Luck as always,

Magoo
