Title: Maidenhead Schools
Post by: ANYAS on Wednesday 24 May 06 23:10 BST (UK)
My Grandmother was born in 1896 in Maidenhead.  She is shown in the 1901 Census as living in Denmark Street.  Can anyone suggest what school she might have attended?  Any ideas at all would be much appreciated.

The nearest (primary) school to Denmark Street is St Luke's.  It is still there.

Thank you so much for this information - in fact my Gran's parents were married in St. Lukes Church so it could follow that she went to St. Lukes School.  I am thrilled to know it still exists, hope I will be able to get to Maidenhead sometime to visit.

Does anyone know if school records were kept from this time(early 1900s) and if it is possible to view them?

Berkshire Record Office probably hold the records for the school.  Contact them to check:

http://www.berkshirerecordoffice.org.uk/localhistory/schools.htm

Windsor & Maidenhead is now a unitary authority and I am not aware that it has a record office or archive.

The Berkshire Unitary Authorities share the record office and Library Service and a number of other things like that.

Berkshire as a council of course no longer exists except for those of us interested in history.  Its nearly as dead as Middlesex.

I lived in Cordwallis Road and went to the Primary School called Ellington (its opposite the bottom of Cordwallis Road) It may be worth checking in addition to St Lukes.

I've only just joined and come across this thread. I think some of the schools mentioned are much later than the period you are looking at. I think Ellington opened about 1932. I think St Lukes was probably later as well.  The only schools I know of in 1903 were:

National Schools, East Street
Wesleyan Schools, King Street
Boyn Hill Schools
St Pauls, Albert Street
British Schools, West Street
Braywick School
Roman Catholic School, Cookham Road
West Street Council School (from 1904)
Brock Lane Council School (from 1904)

Hope that helps

The Berkshire Unitary Authorities share the record office and Library Service and a number of other things like that.
The UAs jointly fund the BRO (or 5 of them do) but the libraries are separate services. Maidenhead has a particularly good local histories section.
Berkshire as a council of course no longer exists except for those of us interested in history.  Its nearly as dead as Middlesex.
Berkshire existed long before county councils were invented and still exists today. There is a Lord Lieutenant and an Archdeacon - and numerous Berkshire organisations.

Hi Anyas and Lesanne,
Have just found your thread!  My mother and her brother (b. 1908) went to East Street School, she was born in 1910 (so in school from 1915) and lived in Garden cottages which was very near at the end of St Lukes Road.  I have a very tattered photo of a few pupils.
My Grandparents, on the 1891 census, were living in Denmark Street with their two children.  They also lived at Hitcham Bucks just over the river.  Also Waldeck Road and Reform Road Maidenhead. Name Dobson.
The way this is is going we could soon have every family that lived in Denmark Street!!!  Any information on Garden Cottages would be much appreciated
Regards, Abiam

Hi,
And I've just remembered my Grandfather Ernest John Wyse, who died before I was born, got married at St Lukes Church from Cordwallis Road.  In fact the last four generations, including me, got married there.  It's a very small world and getting smaller all the time since I joined Roots.  Do you know where the Parish records for St Lukes are held and are there any on line?  I'm in Spain and finding it hard to verify dates etc.

Hi Jill,

The originals are held at the Berkshire Record Office, but they state that many of the 20th century registers were badly damaged in a fire (NB Lesanne - you aked this question before and I could not remember the exact date) in 1991 and so are not fit for production.  I'm not aware of any transcripts at the moment, although Maidenhead Reference Library may hold a copy.

Ernest John Wyse from family info was born in 1879.  Born in Binfield and lived most of his life in Maidenhead.  I'm afraid I can't afford to keep buying certs so I have relied on family for some dates.  He married Ada Lily Harding of Norfolk Park Cottages Maidenhead in 1907.  My main interest about him was to find out more about Maidenhead for the working class in the late 1800's to mid 1930's and I shall try to get the book by Tom Middleton, when I come to England later in the year, as posted by Liitle Nell.

Hi Imber,
So what was your maiden name?  Mine was Dobson and there were Hardings ,Kirby and Fox all in my family and all in NPCottages at some time!  And it wasn't a very long road!  And to add to coincidence my son started off married life at 23 Norfolk Park cottages.
I think you're right and I've been getting my John (Great G.Father) and Ernest John (my Grandfather) muddled up.  I see that in 1881 John Wyse was living at 21 Garden Cottages with wife and two children - E. John aged 1 and William J aged 3 both born Maidenhead!  Thanks fot that,

I have been following all the posts about Cordwallis and Denmark Street with great interest.  I decided to have a look at my Mother's birth certificate and it seems that she was born at No. 15 Cordwallis Road (not Street ?) but I know that she lived in 2 Ray Park Cottages in the early 1920s.  Can anyone tell me anything about Ray Park Cottages please ?

Lesanne, you're right.  Old Maidenhead would be a good thread.  I remember visiting the Hodges family and I'm sure it was in Ray Park Cottages.  It was certainly near the Moor and the Alms houses and a very long time ago! Betty "Hodges" was a pseudo "aunty" of mine.  I was born and lived in College Glen, went to school at Alwyn Road and Maidenhead County Girls.
Anyas,as far as Cordwallis is concerned I've always known it as Road not Street and Ray Park joined Blackamore lane, regards Abiam

Hi Lesanne + Abiam,

Thank you for the info - have looked at Multimap and found the Ray Park area. Each little piece of new information makes more and more sense for me.  I feel a bit of a fraud really as the family only arrived in Maidenhead in 1890 but perhaps that still qualifies us as an 'old Maidenhead family'!!  The two sides originally came from Bucks and Oxon.

Going back to the original thread on schools - I still hope to follow up on school logs and admissions registers as I am told they can be a source of great interest.

This is all so fascinating, I am spending way too much time on the pc !

Thanks again.

:D What time span for 'Hodges' down there? 40/50's Baston, Dean, Johnson.

60's Pedrick. ol' Arthur Pedrick, with his yard on the corner, few pigs and chicken. With the old dog 'Whiskey' would travel in the basket of his traders bike.

Then there was Horwood's scrap yard... another story.

Any takers for Tyrells Buildings?  ;D
Title: Re: Maidenhead Schools
Post by: Abiam2 on Monday 09 April 07 19:48 BST (UK)
Lesanne,
Here we go again!!!  Tyrells Buildings originally housed the guards from Windsor whilst their new barracks were built.  It became known as "The Barracks" and was situated where the new Sainsbury building is being built now.  I think it was very poor quality housing and not a good place to live.  I'm not sure of the time scale but I think a lot of families were rehoused into Garden Cotts and Norfolk Park from there.  Not sure about that.

I can hardly keep up with all this.  I feel some of my family must have known some of the people you mention, it would be almost impossible not to.  Depends on dates of course.  Firstly, Lesanne mentioned her grandfather recalling the name Ayers.  What can he remember about them? (please edit if necessary!). Then Tyrrells Buildings was mentioned. Yes, it was regarded as very downmarket, but my family were there! I think the Tyrells name has been corrupted from Turrells but ever since they named the car park "Tyrrells" it has stuck.  My mother in law was a Hildreth from the bike shop (former blacksmith) in Market Street just nearby.  Back to Turrells.  Yes, the family referred to it as " The Barracks". PLEASE tell me where you got the story about the soldiers - my family told me it derived from an expression of contempt and some of then just didn't want to talk about it. Anyway, eventually they started building their own houses (Alwyn Road, Highfield Road, Pinkneys Road).  College Glen was mentioned?  My wife lived in Belmont Vale! Alwyn School - when my granddad retired he became caretaker there. My great uncle (born 1896) and great aunt were on the school roll for the very first day. That's enough for the moment!

hi Imber,
The Tyrells story came from a very helpful lady at M'head Library.  You're right it was pretty much a slum.  My Gx2 grandfather was William Harding and wife Emma Tuckwell and 4 children.  From there it was East Street which I don't think was a lot better.  Next time I have them is 1881 and they are at 24 Norfolk Park Cottages with a daughter, Alice aged 25, but not seen earlier.

I just wondered whether I'd missed them in 1991 but no the ages were way out.  Back to your post.  I remember Hildreths very well.  Unfortunately a bike from there was out of the question!  You say about people knowing each other then  - I was born in College Glen I wonder would I know your wife?  Belmont Vale was just round the corner and Miss Goodayer had a shop on the corner opp. Maddelys barber shop and near to the butchers.  Must stop, could go on and on....

Hi Abiam

When I worked at Maidnhead Library (1960s!) I never saw anything like that in the local material.  There's more info and interest now, but it would take a lot to convince me that that story holds any water (although I would love it to be the case). One of the problems with Maidenhead history is that someone comes up with a hunch and next week it appears in a book as a fact!  They can't even get their act together on the town name. In fact anything before about 1600, or even later, is pretty suspect.  You don't know this library person's name by chance?  I still have friends working at the library and so I would love to chase this up.

I'd love to know more about Belmont Vale?  I remember a family called Fisher and another called James or Janes.  Send me a PM if you like.

Hello Abiam, Imber, Lesanne + Everyone,

Not sure if I should be posting under this heading again but it is loosely connected to schools.

Abiam, you were asking for info about Garden Cottages I believe.  I've just had a birthday and my dear daughter bought me a very interesting book called Maidenhead Voices, a book of recollections covering the early 1900s through both World Wars.  Garden Cottages is referred to several times but one of the comments stood out - 'life was tough but so much community spirit'.  Send me a pm is you would like to have more info.

The book also has a section called School and Play and a number of schools are recalled, St. Paul's, East Street, Boyn Hill, St. Luke's, and many more.

This is a really fascinating book, lots of photographs and for anyone interested in padding out their family history, its a real gem. This is beginning to sound like an advertisement - sorry.

Hi all.  I was in touch with my contact at Maidenhead Library re Tyrrells/Turrells Buildings.  Turns out the story about the Guards from Windsor came from two books, one of which is the one just mentioned.  I'll be getting a copy to see if any primary source was used or whether this is just speculation. What I have discovered just recently is that 'Barracks' was a term used widely at that time to decibel such accommodation.  The 1862 census for nearby Burnham records such a 'Barracks' with multiple occupancy.

Hello Everyone,

Maidenhead Voices is by Chrissy Rosenthal and Ann Danks and is from the Tempus Oral History Series.  I believe my daughter purchased it on-line from Amazon Books.

One of the things of particular interest to me was the flooding at Ray Park Cottages and punting down the road on builder's planks !  I can just imagine my mother being one of the children to do that.

Thankyou so much for recommending 'Maidenhead Voices' it arrived yesterday and I spent most of the afternoon and all evening reading it.  I even remember two of the submitters from schooldays.
I wish my family from Garden Cottages and the Barracks could see how improved my life style has been.  There was such a divide between the rich and the poor.  Maidenhead may been known as 'The jewel of the Thames' but there was most certainly another side to the town.
Thank you again,

 :D Hello Weebird,
A very warm welcome to Rootschat. I hope you find it  friendly and helpful, as we all do our best to help each other.

To find the history of Tyrrells/Tirells, we might have to go to the Nation Archives records. I believe it possibly is Salvation Army barracks. Possibly moneys given by John Tyrell.

The Tyrell name has many asso with 'our' area. As far back as the civil war 14/1600's in a list of creditors for the King. Click on link below....
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=7&CATID=-4487131&j=1

The building is on the North side of the A4. In Cookham registration district.
If you have any family on the South side of A4, they will be in Bray reg dist.

I am from Maidenhead and I sometimes visit the 'old home' library. The M'head Advertizer is on fiche there. Many other useful resources.

The buildings had lots of local families, mine included, before they were moved to the Cordwallis area, north of the town.

I hope the above is helpful.
Please post again on this 'thread' as most are 'old Maidonians'.

Lesanne.

Hello Old Maidonians,

I received this info today about Tyrell's Buildings.  It is from an email sent to me by Bridget Hole.  She is a well known Maidenhead Historian and author -have a look on Amazon.

"Tyrrell's Buildings were built in about 1843 as barracks for the Life Guards of Windsor while their barracks were being rebuilt; hence 'The Barracks'. The drunken behaviuor of the soldiers was so bad that a pub was built for them inside the building to keep them out of the town. When they went back to Windsor, Tyrrells Buildings was converted to basic accommodation for the industrious poor - as opposed to the unindustrious poor (old or sick) who lived in the workhouse. It had its own chapel, Providence chapel which came under the parish of St. Mary's. Reform Rd and Waldeck Rd. were built by Charles Butler, also as social housing. The Reform Mission Hall - the tin tabernacle - in Waldeck Rd , built 1903, also came under the parish of St. Mary's. In the 1880's, police would only patrol Tyrrells Buildings, Reform Rd and Waldeck Rd, in twos. Norfolk Park estate and Garden Cottages, the first concrete houses in Maidenhead, were built by James Pearce, son of the Maidenhead benefactor J.D.M Pearce, also as social housing. All these homes disappeared in the 1960/70's, except the Providence chapel which continued until 1987 as a shop in the market; Sainsburies is now on the site.
Bridget."

Not very salubrious beginnings for any of us!  I have just dicovered that my G G Grandparents lost twins whilst living there aged just under one and just over one.

Just remembering, seeing the name Pearce, there was 'The Pearce Hall' I think in Marlow Road.  I think that's where I went for my first grown up New Year's Eve with my parents and their friends!

Regards,
Abiam

I am new to this site and have read with interest all the information on Tyrrells Buildings and Garden Cottages. I lived in Garden Cottages until 1948 and went to Ellington Park School. My grandmother was born in Tyrells Buildings. Her name was Rose Montague . Her mother remarried after being widowed. She married William Gascoigne. Has anyone any connection with these families please? My mother also lived in Garden Cottages from about 1918 to 1948. Her name was Edith Smith. Her mother remarried after being widowed. She married William Mulford but my mother never took his name.

Hello Ermyntrude,
Welcome to Roots Chat!

Our ancestors must have known each other!  I don't know if you have the full census on The Barracks but I've put here.
I don't see a connection but if you look on the 1861 census for The Barracks
RG09 Piece 754 Folio 60 Page 43.  If you go to next page eventually you will come to the Montague family.  I've started on P 43 as it gives you a good idea of the famiies living there.

My families are P 44 William  and Ann Vincent
P 48 Willliam and Emma Harding

I also have several families in Thornton Cottages and Norfolk Park Cottages.  Family names again Vincent and Harding also Wise/Wyse.

I also have my Grandfather living at 21 Garden Cottages on the 1881.

A lot moved to Norfolk Park Cotts later as yours may have done.

I haven't time to check anything else as I am flying to the UK this afternoon to stay with family in MAIDENHEAD!

Hope this helps and maybe we can help each other when I get back (2 weeks)
If you don't have access to the census send me a PM and I will send them when I'm back here,

Regards Abiam

Hi everyone,

I am back in Spain having just spent two weeks in Maidenhead, Berkshire visiting my children and grandchildren and the Berkshire Records Office.  The first two very successful the third somewhat disappointing!  I took Roots chatters advice about my visit and armed with packed lunch, loads of notes, sharpened pencils etc. I was duly dropped off at 9.00am just as they opened.  Everyone was very helpful and I was coping with new (to me) fangled things like fiche and film readers.  After about an hour and a half my back 'went' and the rest of my day was spent in agony as I tried to find the information I was after.  Also a lot of things I wanted to see were not there.   I did think the BRO had everything on Berkshire!
The chairs at the BRO look as though they are ergonomically designed but are in fact extremely uncomfortable.  They certainly didn't suit my back.  I took the advice of taking a break, getting up, trying to stretch a little and walked across to the BFH and got my Berkshire Burial Index updated.
Once this had happened I lost my thread as to what I really wanted to find out – such a big disappointment.  The BRO is a great building with every mod. con. and helpful, patient staff. Their only failing for me was the chairs.
I also visited the Maidenhead Heritage Centre, newly opened in Park Street, and bought a couple of books.  One in particular very interesting to Old Maidonians was called “ARE YOU MARRIED, OR DO YOU LIVE IN MAIDENHEAD?  By Bridget Hole.  This is a who's who of Maidonians and there were many familiar names bringing back so many memories of a happy childhood in the town.  ISBN 0952794713.  A really good book for delving into every so often.
The rainy weather in the UK was a real treat for me as I am now back in the height of summer and not liking it much!

Regards,
Abiam
PS Terminal 5 was fabulous!

Thank you Abiam for your suggestions on finding more about my ancesters in Tyrrells Buildings. Were your family who lived in garden Cottages called Wise. One of my cousins lived in our cottage after we left remembers a family called Wise. She thought they lived near the Palethorpes. We lived at number 86. We moved to Doncaster when I was 6 so I have only few memories of my time there but some are clear. I remember going to the shop at the end of the road with tea coupons and the lady making a cone shaped bag to put some sweets in it . My cousin said it would be Mrs Bond and her shop was in the front room. I remember lots of little frogs in the gardens at the back probably from the dyke. I can remember water coming into the house when it flooded. Some of the families I remember were the Sellars the Hopkins, Heedens,Palethorpes and the Wests.I used to go to Sunday School at the Gospel Hall at the end of the road. On the way to Ellington Park school I seem to remember passing some big houses in a lane and talking to a girl there who was about my age. I think her name was Amanda. I envied her her bunk beds! I know her brother went to boarding school. It was a different world from the one I knew. She came to a birthday party I had but I can't remember going past her front gate!!!  I never got bunk beds but my children did.

Glad you enjoyed the first part of your visit....  ::)

What is it about BRO.. the staff are helpful and patient, the place is full of indexes.....
What else could we need  ??? It just goes downhill from there  :P  :P

You say lost the thread, some stuff isn't there... let me know what you were looking for and perhaps next time I go  :o  ::) i can get it for you.

Hello Ermyntrude,
Welcome to Rootschat... All very friendly folks here, help out each other if we possibly can.  8)
Looking at your Smith's. I also have Smith's in Garden Cottages. Mine originally from Risbough/Wycombe, how they got to Garden Cotts... working on that one...  :-\  ;D

Hi Lesanne
I had a cousin called Ron Smith who went to live in Princess Risborough and although he spent a lot of time visiting our family in Garden Cottages he didn't live there as far as I know. His sister lived there but her married name was Daphne Gwilym nee Smith. I think a lot of families moved to the council estate {Larchfield}.
Thanks Ermyntrude

Hi Ermyntrude,

My mother was born at number 20 Garden Cottages in 1910 she was Kathleen Elizabeth Wyse - parents John and Elizabeth Wyse.

I think they got out of there after her little sister died in 1918 and then they lived at number 13 Norfolk Park Cottages until she married my father in 1933 and they lived in College Glen.

And Lesanne,
Thanks for the offer.  I am now in such a muddle I think I need  a rest!  Five grandsons under six years old has exhausted me.  When I'm sorted I'll be in touch.

Do you have the census reference details for Garden Cottages?  Ancestry don't seem to like the numbers I'm putting in!  In fact I've just had another go and I'm told I have the wrong ID or somesuch.

All the best,
Abiam

Hi  Abiam
After reading your piece  I wish I could check with my mother{she died four years ago.} She was born in 1911 but I think moved to Garden Cottages when she was six or seven and her mother had remarried. She often talked about a little girl dying and being taken to see her . I wonder if this could have been your aunt.
I think your family may have followed each other around because I think my mother lived at Norfolk Park before moving to Garden Cottages!

There are so many "if onlys" in this FT business.
Gladys Maud Wyse was born 1912 died 1918 of TB I think.  I'm afraid I can't go to the expense of all the certs I would like.
She was buried at All Saints cemetery at the Courthouse Road end of All Saint Avenue.
I have added her picture not that it will be any help but just for interest.  Incidentally restored beautifully by the Photographic board.
Did any of your family stay in the Maidenhead area?
Will let you know if I find anything else of interest,
Abiam

Thank you so much Abiam for the photo of your aunt . My mother always said the little girl she knew who died at Garden Cottageslooked like 'an angel to her'
She was taken to see the little girl after death and so being a child herself it must have had a profound effect on her.
My mother's brother {Smith} and his family stayed in the Maidenhead and Bucks areas.

Hi Ermintrude,

It is a lovely picture but imagine taking a child to see her after death!  It sounds a bit macabre to me.  As you say must have had a profound effect.  I'm afraid I don't know the name Smith in this connection although I was married to one for about 26 years!  But not for the last 18!!!

Lesanne,
I do have a very uninspiring pic of Garden Cotts will see if I can dig it out.  I have found 3!  Will post when I have removed all this stuff on my desk!

Bumbled,
Do ask your Mother in Law if she remembers anything of the  Wyse, Harding or Vincent families, please.  Kathleen Wyse was born there in 1910 and I have just found 3 Vincent families of mine living there.

What a busy thread this has become again,  Where are you Anyas?

Here goes!  t's a long time since I uploaded a picture.  Hope I can remember.  They are out of the book 'Maidenhead Voices' which Anyas recommended ages ago.

The first is the rather depressing one.  Imagine it pouring with rain and wet washing hanging everywhere in the house!

The second is 'The Bethel Mission Sunday School'  (Holmanleaze) outing taken in the early 30's. The boy in the front with the cap is Bernard O Howard

Hi Lesanne and any old Maidonians

You would really enjoy this book the details are

'Maidenhead Voices' by Chrissy Rosenthal and Ann Danks
ISBN 0 7524 3290 7
Price 12.99 but I got mine for about half that through Amazon.

Just flicking through it some memories came flooding back.  There is a short description of a 5 year old contracting polio in 1948.  This happened to me and somehow I missed this paragraph when I first read the book.  I lived in College Glen then and remember the Dr. coming (Dr Frank, a great, caring Dr.) and the ambulance came and took me to the old Isolation Hospital opposite the old St Marks.  I remember the ambulance and the big, thick, red blankets and not being allowed any visitors.  I could only see my Mum and Dad through the window and anything they brought in for me had to be sterilized!  I could not remember when this happened and there in the book it says 'Polio Epidemic' and it was in 1948 when I was 6.   Amazing how you can find things!  I would never have known when this happened and I did not suffer any after effects!

End of memory Lane!  Just counting my blessings.

Think I'm a bit older than you but we had Bill Haley and the Comets, parties at Greenfields, Ray Park something, the equivalent of BBQ's in the middle of the thicket ( I did a paper round at the time and was up early next morning ... went to where the previous nights 'do' was and collected all the coppers that had fallen out of the boys pockets).

Then there was El Toucan, Bridge Street and the Coffee Cantata in Queen's Street (always the places to be on Saturdays to find somewhere to go Saturday night!), bottle parties "Merrydown Cider" upstairs in the Greyhound, King Street.  The Royal Adelaide in Windsor for Trad jazz and the EX servicemens club in Windsor, again Trad Jazz.  Then there were dances at the Rowing Club.  And the youth club at St Lukes Church

Getting very nostalgic - I had a great teenage period  in Maidenhead.  No-one had a car we used to cycle everywhere, and somehow my Mum didn't know half!  Just as my kids have told me things I didn't know they got up to!.

Nothing's really new is it?

Hello all,
I just found this thread and joined rootschat straight away. Abiam, your ancestors and mine were next door neighbours in East Street in 1881. No.12, John and Sarah Collins, living next to William and Ann Vincent.

A couple of good pictures of East Street are in the book 'Yesterday's Town Maidenhead' in Maidenhead library.
The National School minute books are in the BRO. Tends to be more stats of pupils admitted and general school order, rather than individual pupil names, but some names are listed

Hi there
Just found this site - didn't know it existed!!
I have been researching my family history for ages and would like to know more about my paternal grandmother - Ethel Gilroy who according to the 1901 census was living in Queen St, about where the Chicago Rock Cafe is now.
I know that she was a school teacher at Holy Trinity primary in Cookham for 28 years but would like to know the name of the school she would have attended and how she became a teacher?? I also remember being told that she played the organ in the Wesleyan chapel - now the Methodist chuch.

It is not clear from your question when she became a teacher and the answer is very dependent upon that.  Up to about 1902 most training was done through the pupil teacher system whereby schools did their own training.  However from 1870 onwards the the local boards took over teacher training and began to establish their own training institutes which at first were attended by the pupil teachers part time.

After 1902 these became formal training colleges eventually attended full time for up to two years.

I don't think she would have attended Holy Trintiy as a pupil. I don't know where else she lived as a child. i don't have any records - only the 1901 census. She lived in Switchback Road while teaching at Holy Trinity

Well I don't really know when she started teaching only that she started at Holy Trinity in 1916. The census in 1901 showed  her occupation as a pupil teacher and she was only 14!!

My guess is that in 1901 she would be working in the school as a pupil teacher but attending training sessions a day or so a week.  Although as she was only 14 she may have been preparing to apply for formal training.

Presumably she was the Ethel May Gilroy registered in Cookham District in the Sept quarter of 1886.  In which case she would probably have been living fairly locally.
It was fairly usual for pupil teachers to start in the school where they were educated.

Yes that's her. She was born in Maidenhead and lived in Queen St as I mentioned before. I would like to find out the school that she attended. I think there was a list of schools in some previous postings.
I did a google search on pupil teacher systems and found out they started in 1846 from the age of 13 so that would fit in.

Just got back from 'the old homestead' and we were talking of Tyrells... Grandma tells me it was a row of tiny cottages...
Anyone got a photo?

Also, where did Bridge Road and Bridge Street start/finish.

Bridge Avenue was round by the bus station/cinema. I have an old map, well 1950ish and it doesn't show Bridge Street at all... Any idea's.

From Maidenhead Bridge to Oldfield Road... Bridge Road.
From Oldfield Road to ... (thinking of 9 High, the sweet shop) Bridge Street finshed at The Crown ??? PH.
Would the Crown of been Number. 1. Bridge Street.

I'm trying to locate 28 Bridge Road, in 1923/4

Looking up towards the town.. on the right.. between The Moor Tavern and The Gardeners Arms was Bromley's baker, Sleath's newsagent, Restuarant, Windsorfridge, numbered between 29-39, Bridge Road. This is in 1960/70.

Hi Lesanne,

Jusr re-reading your post about Tyrell's and I think it must have been more than a row of tiny cottages.  If we are to believe the description below it had it's own pub.  And about 40 units of housing.

It would be great if anyone can find a photograph......

Hi everyone
I'm very new to this, so not sure entirely how it works!! Does anyone have or know how to get photos of Switchback Road area from the early 1900's??

Is Switchback Road officially Maidenhead or Furze Platt ?

Post by: Lesanne on Tuesday 02 September 08 10:39 BST (UK)
A Photo would be great.  8)

I was so suprised when she said a row of tiny cottages.... I had visuallized a 3/4 storey building...  :o

In saying that, that last post describes the Providence chapel being a shop....
if that was the little building, behind The Vine pub... the Fruit and Veg stall used it as a store.
(except the Providence chapel which continued until 1987 as a shop in the market; Sainsburies is now on the site.)

Looking at the 'parish'. If Waldeck/Reform were in there too. There was a little bridge across the stream, where a footpath went to Blackamoor Lane, and forked off to the right by the side of Hines's meadow (now Fire/Police station) through the moor to The Reform pub. (On Bridge Road/Street)

I shall have to ring Grandad....  8)  8)  To find out if there was another pub for the soldiers. Grandad has a fantastic memory.

Wasn't Copas farm up the Switchback... there could be a photo something to do with that.....  :P  :P

I remember picking blackcurrants at the Copas farm at Cookham Dean.   I believe there were several Copas brothers - I remember one of their sons Tom Copas, who we used to know at the Young Farmers Club.

For our blaccurrants I think we got about 6d a punnet.  We were only about 10 and cycled there every day with a sandwich and a bottle of lemonade .  We used to sing that Mel Tormé song "In that mountain greenery where God paints the scenery........"  And it really felt like that!

We worked hard but it was a thoroughly enjoyable time.  And it made us understand the value of money!

If I were addressing a letter to Switchback Road I would say Furze Platt, near Maidenhead!

We used to get Potatoes and veg from the farm when they used to open a shop on a Sunday morning in a barn in Dean Bottom - I believe its offices now ?

Surfice to say that my family have lived in Cookham for over 50 years, the Copas family used to be very generous to local schools etc - I have never seen a Copas on a bike.... ;)

He only remembers from Cordwallis Street, a George Attwood and Syl, is this a Sylvia possibly. They had family, he thinks were relations of Jones family.....  :D

Hope this helps. Lesanne.

Hi, I have just found out in the 1911 census that my Grandfather Charles Field(aged 22) lived in 12 East Street Cottages, Maidenhead with his parents and siblings.  I was interested to read that there was a school in East Street, is this school still there and are there any pictures of East Street.

Hello Croydonian,
Welcome to Rootschat.
My brothers were at East Street, just before it closed.
All that area in Maidenhead has been flattened. East Street joined to Market Street which is the beginning of the Cookham Road.

Hope that makes sense, as you could find it on Google earth.
There you will see the town by-pass. The middle roundabout is the Cookham road.

I hope to go to Maidenhead tomorrow, if you need something looked up....

Best wishes,
Lesanne.

For pics you could try google images....

I discovered that my relatives were in Cordwallis Road as I thought, ( they had previously been in Risborough Road) they also had a family called the Georges lodging with them, I know they didn't leave for about 20 years or so....

I seem to remember talk of East Street when I was small so probably there until the 50's at least

Hi Lesanne,
I don't quite follow this.  My mother was born in August 1910 and left school in 1924/25 aged about 14 or 15.  If it didn't open until 1932 then the above picture cannot be Ellington.

Your quote about Ellington:

"I found the china mug... 60th Anniversary in 1992.
          1932"

So could she have gone to St Lukes?  I always thought that was boys only. Will have to do some more research,
Abiam

My mother was Kathleen Wyse born 1910 in Garden Cottages and by the time she was at East Street school the family were living in Norfolk Park Cottages.  They may well have known each other!

Hi Imogen and Lesanne,

Did either of you go to Health and Beauty?  The classes were held at St Lukes School on the Cookham Road.  Black satin knickers and a white satin top with a small badge showing a dainty young lady in an athletic pose!  I don't remember lasting very long.

I also remember going to Sunday School at Burberry Hall in St Marks Road and also the Brownies in the hall next door.  You've got me going now!  There was the St Lukes Church youth club in the church hall next door and I learnt ballroom dancing at the Masonic Hall.

Oh, another - I trained as a Red Cross Cadet at a funny little hall in the Crescent.  And we did the trolley service on a Sunday afternoon at the old Maidenhead hospital serving the patients with toiletries, sweets  etc.  We were given afternoon tea by the matron as a reward.

School was the County Girls School at the bottom of Castle Hill and we went to the Friday Club in Brock Lane.
Does anyone remember these places?

Abiam

Hello Abiam,
Yes, remember all those places.
I went to the St Lukes youth club.
And the hospital, usually as a patient.
Often in the  emergency room though, it was all red and white. The seats were slatted benches and the floor was big red quarry tiles.... I wonder why..  ;D  :o
A room off that was observation beds... I remember being in there and yelling "I'm in here" when I heard my dad arrive...

Now, I believe, Wexham is the nearest...  :(  although, I did a run over to High Wycombe casualty with my daughter, when we were 'at home' one time.

Just browsing this morning!

I remember having my appendix removed at the old Maidenhead hospital in about 1950.  I wrote a letter to my dad telling him that I had had my "uppendigs" removed.  He carried it in his wallet for years I can still see it in my mind.  But like lots of things it disappeared.

And I can still remember having something put over my face and being told to breathe deeply.  It was horrible!  The children's ward was called thr William Thomas ward.  I was in that hospital several times in the early fifties enough to earn me an invite to a couple of the Christmas parties.

The regime was very strict and I remember two of us getting into real trouble when we managed to get into the bandage cupboard!  Matron was not amused to find two small "mummies" wrapped in her bandages.  In those days they were washed and rewound and some poor night nurse would have had to rewind them.

Does anyone else remember being an in patient there?

Abiam

I've just been reading through all the postings in this thread! I asked a while ago about my grandmother Ethel Gilroy who became Ethel Hodgson and then Ethel Evans and the schools she might have taught at. As I said before I know she taught at Holy Trinity in Cookham from 1917 to 1944. I've tried looking at the teachers registration online but found nothing.
Anyway, since my last posting I have seen the family on the 1911 census and they were still living in Queen St and Ethel was 24yrs old and a teacher at the Church of England school!  I was wondering what school it would have been?? Was St. Lukes formerly East St??? :-\

Hello Karvan,

East Street School is off Market Street/Cookham Road. Kidwells Park is opposite a tad further on.
St Lukes school is futher down the Cookham Road just past St Mary's RC Church.

It's more or less opposite to the turning on the left to Cordwallis Road.

Later on about 1968/69 St Lukes boys moved to Altwood Road.
It then became part of Altwood School.

What number in Queen Street in 1911. Was it above the shops as there were few houses there?

Added... What about Boyne Hill Cof E  or All Saints. Western side of town.

Hi
I wasn't sure where the the school was. I have a book  - Maidenhead in old photographs - and there is a photo of a group of children outside East St C of E school and the caption says it later became St. Lukes!
I know where St Lukes school is now but have no idea how long it has been there.
The family lived at no.56 Queen Street more or less where the nightclub is now.
Family history is sooooooo frustrating!
I think I'll see if they have any records at the Berkshire records office!

Just been thru everything thing I can find on the schools. All Saints and Boyne Hill schools were opened pre 1900. No ref to St Lukes. St Mary's was the RC school and Desborough was a Masonic Hall. Gorden Road is shown on a map c 1910.

My brothers were at East street in the 1960's ...  ??? so I don't understand. Unless the children later (after inf & jnr) went to St Lukes... possibly.

The Creamery was no 76 Queen Street. I only know that as my Gt Grandad had a dairy.

Hmmm...... I'll post if I find anything else.

Hi
I have just joined this site. Fascinating!
I've been working on my family history for about 15 years.
I lived in Maidenhead for all of my school years, first I attended Boyne Hill Infants school. Then the junior school, then on to the County Girls School, as it was known then, on Castle Hill.
I have a photo of it, also Queen Anne House opposite where we did some of our lessons. If anyone would like a copy just let me know. At the request of Bridget Hole, a very good friend of mine, I also sent them to the Maidenhead Heritage Society.
I remember my cousin marrying a Horwood from Garden Cottages.  I think he also lived there at one time, before moving to Boyne Valley Road. The name is Shaw.
I have many fond memories of my childhood. We were poor but my sister and I never went hungry, although I have no doubt that my mother and grandmother sometimes did.
I also have some rotten memories of the war, of being so scared my teeth chattered.
Enough, I am digressing.  Just wanted you to know what a wonderful site you have here.

It's good to have another Maidonian on board!  What years were you at the CG's School?  I have just received copies of the school photo taken in 1953 and 1956 and can let you have copies.  I would be interested in copies of the school particularly Queen Ann House - a part of Maidenhead that should never have been destroyed!

You have to make three posts before you can send or receive Private Messages so just add a couple more messages to this thread and then you can PM me.  My pics are too big to post on the board,

Hi Lesanne
Thanks for the offer.

Nothing I need right now for the Denmark st. area.

Just having a prob. at the moment trying to find parents of an Elizabeth Day - my dads paternal gran.

Know she was b. 1863 Burghfield and married Walter Read 1884 at Wokingham, but haven't got the marr. cert.

She married again in 1900 (bit iffy that one!) Henry G. Lockyer, and they ended up living in Alwyn rd .  My mum can remember them.  If you get any chance with that one would be very grateful.

Just had a quick look at the dads birth cert, sorry they moved top Denmark st, actually born 14 Cordwallis St (1913).  Mum and dad married in St Lukes church in 1935.  Recognise a lot of the names that have been mentioned before.  The Misses Westlake (there were two sisters, neither married) re Elmslie school, lived a few doors from us at Furze Platt.

Can remember playing tennis in the road with my brother who did a beaut of a return shot, straight through their greenhouse window.  Needless to say we disappeared quick!!

best regards

Thanks for your kind welcome. I think I may like this site very much.
You have brought back memories of the vegetable horse and cart. I recall people rushing out with a shovel to gather the horse manure for their gardens (nothing else being available in wartime).

Also the little boys hanging on the back for a ride.

Hi Abiam

Thanks for your welcome also.  I was at the County Girls School from 1946 to 1951 (I think - it's long ago). Neverthless I would like your pics of the school photos '53and '56 as my sister was still there. Of course I will e-mail my photos. I agree, Queen Anne House should never have been allowed to be pulled down.

I have been asked the names of teachers at the . All I can recall are the following:

Head Mistress: Miss Wingate for a very short time, then Miss Costello.
Miss Spooner, Miss White, Miss Tozer, Miss Richmond. I'm sure the others will come to mind eventually.

Now I have made three posts so I will try to e-mail this weekend.

I lived in maidenhead when I started school at age 4 and think she could have easily attended East Street Infants school, where I started at the end of the last war as it is very old, and is near enough to Denmark Street to count.

Bryan Dobson,

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.  I cannot help with the school door except to suggest that maybe it was a Sunday School?  It was interesting to read your post as I live just around the corner and a lot of my family were born/living in Norfolk Park Cottages.  My particular interest is that you are a Dobson and my maiden name is Dobson.  My father was born in Waldeck Road in 1905 (there were 11 children!) and his father in Hungerford.  I wonder if we have a connection?

Hi, I'm new to the website having started family history about 6 months ago. I was researching my great grandfather Joseph Beaver from Marlow and discovered that he had 3 sisters, Mary, Annie and Elizabeth. Combining census results and BMD I discovered that all three sisters married in Maidenhead and in 1901 all lived next to each other in East Street.
Mary lived at number 11 with her husband Walter Gilder
Annie lived at number 9 with her husband Ernest Bond
Elizabeth lived at number 12 with her husband Frederick Baldwin.
Mary and Elizabeth feature in Garden Cottages in 1891 census but I haven't yet found Annie.
I'm intrigued how they all ended up next door to each other as they were all Marlow girls. Anyone got any ideas. Has anyone come across their names in their research.

Thanks

Welcome to RC.  Not much help but there were 2 families in Alwyn Road Maidenhead in the 50'60's.  They were Gilders had a daughter Ann and Baldwin had a son Peter.  Could be relatives of yours?

I remember the floods of 1950s - can't remember the year.  I was at the Convent of the Nativity up in College Road & some of the pupils who lived down by the river were late - their excuse 'I missed the boat' quite true as boats were being used to get people out of their homes.  The Convent used to be down by the river but moved in the 40s I think.

Hi - very new to this board. A reply to Abiam, really (a post which is a couple of years old). Read that you were the nephew (or similar) of Betty Hodges and William (Jim) Hawkes. I am their first granddaughter  and am just about to embark upon the long process of trying to trace any info, as most of our family's treasured possessions (including sentimental photos) were "lost" when Nanna and Grandad died, and I don't know really where to start! Not asking for help, just thought I'd say Hello, and will pop in if I find out anything of any interest (if no-one has beaten me to it, by then, which is quite likely)!!   :)
I remember "Aunty" Kath Dobson was a friend of Nanna's.

Hello Pixel,
Welcome to Roots chat. If you are just starting you are so lucky to have found Roots Chat everyone is very helpful.   I am the person concerned a female with the surname Dobson.  But I won't be much help as your grandparents grew up with my parents and in those days they were called Aunty Bett and Uncle Jim.  I remember them both and your mother and her brother.  They were all part of my life as a child.  I have a few pics of your grandparents if you are interested.  I used to play with John when they lived in Powney Road.  Your mother was a bit older not much difference now but there was when I was only 10!
All I know of your Great Grandparents was that they lived near the Moor in Ray Street? and their name was Hodges.
Sorry I can't help further.  How are your Mum and Dad?  We haven't been in touch for years!
Good luck,
Abiam
Did I knit something for you once - a very long time ago.................................?

Abiam - thank you so much for your reply, and it is really lovely to hear from you (even though it's possible I may not know who you are)!!!  You may very well have knitted some things for me; were they little figures? I distinctly remember a Father Christmas which I kept for ages - that certainly was a very long time ago! If it is not the figures, then I was knitted a beautiful jumper in pastel colours when Nanna was in hospital - I also had that for a long time and wore it a lot!!!

I would be eternally grateful for any photos you may have of our family, that is very kind of you to offer. When Nanna and Grandad died (Bett and Jim), John took all their photos to look after until Mum was over the grieving process enough to have them, but he sadly also died before that happened, so we unfortunately lost the lot when his home was cleared.

Mum and Dad are fine, thank you, usual aches and pains as they get older. Dad is struggling a lot with painful hips, had one replaced unsuccessfully. It's for Mum as much as anything, actually, that I have started this quest, as she's so upset that she's lost all of the old photographic memories and little keepsakes, so anything you have I would be very pleased to see. Thank you again, I appreciate it! Naturally, if it involves any cost, I will happily reimburse you.

Hello,
Yes it was a multi coloured jobbie.  I can't stop now as I have a very busy week and now have to go out in 30 mins. and am in my D gown at this moment.  If you reply to this reply I think I can send you a private message thro RC and I will reply to that later today.

I have searched out 16 people from our days at Joan Bennetts and have organised a lunch time meeting for her 'girls' next Sunday. I was hairdressing in Maidenhead from 1958 - 1969 ish at Joan Bennetts so I am up to my ears so I can't stop now!

Good to be in touch, regards to your Mum and Dad,
Abiam
And I will see what photos I can find  maybe the week after next.

Abiam - thanks for your warm welcome to Rootschat. It has spurred me on with my tentative efforts at finding out what I can for Mum. Have just ordered "Maidenhead Voices" recommended on this board, and have just received a msg from Amazon to say it's on its way (Yip yip). Won't mean a lot to me, probably, as I really don't know a lot about Maidenhead and its people, but Mum might appreciate it. Some names and places I've read on this board sound familiar, can remember the name Mrs Wheeler cropping up in conversation, Powney Road most definitely (that's where Nanna and Grandad, Mum and John lived before Redriff Close). I live about 40 mins or so from Maidenhead now, so may pop into the library, which sounds an excellent source of information. From feeling pretty nervous about this venture, I am now feeling a bit more excited, so thank you! Am starting to overcome some of my misgivings!!
Can't believe I found someone so close to my family so soon - really shows what a small world we live in!

I am looking for suggestions for schools my grandmother may have attended while young (if at all). Her name was Gladys Burnham and she was living in East Rd, Maidenhead at the time of the 1911 census. I know there was a school at the end of East St but I think this was a boys school. Any suggestions where I can start? She eventually went to Gordon Road school.  :-\

East Street was boys and girls. Gordon Road was mixed as well.
I think Gordon Road had a small annex on Castle Hill as well. This later became M'head Youth Club.

Gordon School used the County Girls School as an annexe after the County Girls moved out.  As I recall it was used as a Youth Centre or similar when Gordon eventually closed.

Hi, I came across your post with images of Garden Cottages by chance. In the photograph of the street party I can just make out the shop on the corner of Holman Leaze that was owned by my grandparents (Their surname was Mealing). As a child in the 50's, I lived almost opposite the shop - house can't be seen in the photo.

I believe my mother may still have some photographs of Garden Cottages in the 1947 floods. If she can find these I'll post them. Maybe of interest.

By the time I started school (Ellington - 1956) I think some of the cottages in your first photograph may have already been demolished - the centre block - I've a vague memory of there being a block standing at each end of the road in the photo.

Seeing these pictures cerainly brought back some memories - mostly wet and muddy ones from falling in the stream that ran at the back of Garden Cottages and my parents house!!

Regards from Reading.

Hope this isn't too big!
Reform Road 1945 - end of the war.
And then the last GC 'A party held at Lower Garden Cottages' to celebrate the end of the war in 1945.

Had to modify this last post as I had them round the wrong way.  Think it's right now,

Hi.
I found this site and became interesred as I  went to Elmslie on Castle Hill in the late 50s early 60s
I took boys up until the age of ten.
I am afraid that I can add no historic links but there are some photographs and  reference to people who were there in first half of the 20thC.

http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk/b/2abdc808-bdf6-484e-b427-c15337e5f9e8

I was a weekly Boarder at Elmslie and fairly clearly  remember feeling desolated on my first day when my mother left me there.I was barely six and a half years old. The head Mistress's name was Miss Westlake and my form teachers were a Mrs. and Miss Williams who I think were mother and daughter.

I was once given 'The Slipper' for using my bed as a trampoline by Matron. There was a girl that I think may have been called Christine. She gave me a  brightly painted  model of an American Indian totem pole about three of four inches high. I still posses it. She told me about sex. I was not interested. More into animals, nature and climbing trees.

We used to walk down to the public swimming baths on the corner of East Street & Cookham Road. I remember my fascination at seeing a the exposed valves and coils of an old radio that had been dumped under a bush in the park where the teacher would take us on fairly regular  'Nature Walks'.

I would be glad to hear if anyone else has anything to add that I might remember.

I was born in Maidenhead, Wayside Nursing Home, and lived in Market Street next to my great aunt Edith Beare, a former headmistress at East Street school.  I went there for about a year until we moved to South Road and I went to Convent of the Nativity, College Road from 1949 to 1959.
There used to a public swimming baths on the corner of East Street & Cookham Road & I can remember walking there from the Convent.
Another branch of the Halfacre/Beare families were the Hildreths who owned a cycle shop in Market Street for many years

Hi All,

I know this thread is very old, so I hope that people drop by to look at it every so often.

My grandfather was evacuated out to Maidenhead in 1939, from Croydon and billeted out to "2 Lower East Street", which I believe was also just know as the East Street cottages.

If anyone knows of any relatives who lived on that street, have any photos or might know what school he would have attended whilst evacuated there please let me know!

He wasn't there long as he caught caught stealing a purse and ended up in Juvenile Court and consequently an Approved school, but it would be nice to know what the area was like when he was there.

Thanks

I re read my post that refers to my memories of. Elmslie. Must have been having a senior moment when I wrote it. As I now think that my teachers were Mrs. Miss Stevens.

Just now I tried the link to the picture that I posted. I can't get it to work. I will try and repost when I can find the original.

Re: Lynton House School in Maidenhead.  The two head teachers names were Mrs. Fuller and Miss Wooster. I was there between 1956 and 1961.  I too remember the freezing pool, changing rooms and the disinfectant foot bath we were made to step in.  Also the verucca/athletes foot check beforehand.
