This can get confusing for newcomers, so here are a few words of explanation ...
At the top of every RootsChat page you will see three lines/links
Welcome back, Josephine Soap, you have xxx messages, yy are new.
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.
If you click on the xxx messages you will come to your Personal Messages (PM)
These are private and only you can see them.
Show unread posts since last visit.
Any new topic, or any topic that has been replied to, since you last logged in will be found in this list.
Show new replies to your posts.
If you reply to any topic, or start up a topic yourself, then anytime anybody replies to this topic,
it will appear in this list, regardless of whether or not the reply was meant specifically for you.
It might help to read the text "as is" but think of it as meaning:
"Show new replies to any topics to which you have also replied"
E-mail notification.
In a way, this is similar to the Show new replies to your posts list
If you reply to any topic, or start up a topic yourself, then you will receive an e-mail notification,
"a reply has been made on a topic you are interested in", anytime somebody replies to this topic,
regardless of whether or not the reply was meant specifically for you.
The reply itself is on the topic.
You can switch e-mail notifications on and off,
either individually, when you are replying to a topic,
or globally, in your profile : "Notifications and Email" and "Personal Message Options"
or at any other time, by clicking on the "Notify" button at the top or bottom of the topic.
And by the way, that only applies to e-mail notifications;
sorry, but you cannot switch off entries in the
Show unread posts since last visit. or the Show new replies to your posts. list.
Unfortunately, there is no standard "naming convention" on RootsChat;
when talking about their input on RootsChat:
- Some people say message, meaning "Personal Message/PM"
- Some people say message, meaning "Reply to topic"
- Some people say "e-mail" meaning "Reply to Topic"
- Some people say "e-mail" meaning "Personal Message/PM"
Added: (see Reply #4)
- Some people say posting, meaning "Reply to topic"
Hope this helps,
Bob
-
Thank you Bob. I've only been using this site for over a couple of years now, and still learning. :) Lyn

thanks for that bob. much clearer now. will eventually get the hang of this. just a wee bit of a slow learner. good luck dolly

Good Afternoon Bob,
I wish they would say precisely what they mean. May I say "post" or "posting" when I mean "message" or "email" meaning "Reply to Topic" or would this be adding to the state of chaos and utter confusion which is half the fun on RootsChat :D
All the Best, Chris

My message counter has been at 8 for a long time and it always tells me I have no new messages. I have more than this and have had lots of helpful replies. Can someone please tell me why the counter does not work!!!!
Thank you.
Moderator Comment: topics merged

Hi Pelican,
the "message" counter is for the number of Private Messages (PM) you have.
I have merged this topic with a fuller explanantion
Bob
-
hi,
thanks for the clarification, it's a bit clearer now, still terrified of all those symbols/tags..
-
Thanks for the clarification in information. I just found your site last week and am still learning, albeit very slowly. Still haven't mastered or understand the exact procedure in order to get someone to reply to one of your postings. The information at thetop of the homepage hasn't changed and keeps asking me to login even though I think I am logged in.
A great site and I hope to find my infomation useful to someone ..

What does " Warning - while you were reading a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post" mean? Also How do I access or review my new post?
Thanks.
yn9man
-
Means pretty much that !
You open a thread - maybe a request for a Lookup.... while you are searching and formatting, someone else has replied to the thread.
When you finally click POST / SAVE, the System alerts you that another Post has been made whilst you were busy ..... it 'holds' your post so that you can scroll down the page to see whats been added.
It may be that someone else has posted the search you were doing, in which case you may wish to abandon, or modify your response before clicking POST /SAVE.
-
Hi yn9man,
Warning - while you were reading a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post
it means exactly what it says :)
You see a posting and want to reply. You click on "reply" and start typing.
But, while you are typing, someone else is also replying to this post, and they send their reply before you send yours.
The software notices this and prints the above message. If you page down a bit, you can then see this new message, and decide whether you still want to post yours (it's different information) or whether to delete yours (it may just be repeating information from the other post). Or you may want to edit yours to in light of the new information, before sending it.
Bob
Just happened to me now !!!!
NecroMance has replied, using less words, so that post got sent quicker than mine !
(so I added these red lines ;D )
-
Thanks for clearing up some of my questions. Can you delete or "zero out" the personal message section or is it an ongoing "counter"?
yn9man
-
Hi yn9man,
Can you delete or "zero out" the personal message section or is it an ongoing "counter"?
not quite sure how you mean that, so if this doesn't help, ask again.
The "You have xxx messages" is a permanent counter and always appears, if you are logged in to RootsChat.
It always shows the number of messages currently in your in-box.
So if you never delete anything, then it is an on-going counter.
But once you've read them, there is nothing to stop you deleting your unneeded PMs (it's even recommended ;D )so the count could go up and down from day to day, depending on how "heavy" your delete-finger is.
This counter only shows your in-box, not your out-box, which also need de-cluttering from time to time ;D ;D

I presume you are the chap in charge of the whole thing. I've just joined and trying to get the hang of things.
I'd like to know how we get to talk specifically to another member. For example, if I find that someone is researchnig exactly the same person as me, might be a 2x/3x/4x grandparent thus making that person my 3rd/4th/nth cousin. Want to share info with them but its not really ALL for public consumption.
We can't put our own email addresses on the post so how do we do it? Can't find the answer in the help screens, sorry if its there.
Thanks
Graham

Hi Graham,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
thanks for the compliment, but I'm just one of the RootsChat Team.
If you want to talk privately to a member, then send them a PM, a Private Message. You can exchange all the confidential info. you like there, and nobody else will see it.
have a look here for more information:

Hello
I have just recentlyjoined the Roots Chat Site.
I have received two emails, but when I click on them to open then, they will not open.
My code name is "Twinkleberry"

Bob -
Another newbie type question ---
How does one go about "de cluttering" their "out box". I would like to delete a few of the messages I sent but keep the majority of them.
Thanks and KUDOS again to you and the other founders / honchos of this site. It it truly amazing.
yn9man
-
Hi yn9man,
same procedure for INBOX and OUTBOX
Either:
click on the delete button on the individual posts
or:
in the message list, click on the messages you want to delete (see below, image #1), and click on "delete selected"
or:
click in the "to" box at the top of the list (image #2), and delete everything on that page.
or:
Click on the big "Delete" button at the top of the message list. (not recommended !!)
Vorsicht !! Achtung !! Careful !!
This one deletes EVERYTHING in your INBOX or OUTBOX !!!!!!
You pays yer money an' takes yer choice ;D
Bob
-
Bob -
Yikes ... sooooooooo many choices :D
Think I will start off slowly and try clicking on the delete button on the individual posts. Wish me luck.
Many thanks for your prompt response. Much appreciated.
yn9man
:) :) :)
P.S. Just went to my outbox (i.e. all postings listed in profile section) or what I thought what my out box. There isn't any "Delete" as an option. There are three choices (boxes) in lower right hand corner of the messages though ...reply, quote and notify.
Guess I don't understand where "outbox" is.
-
Hi yn9man,
as I said elsewhere
Unfortunately, there is no standard "naming convention" on RootsChat;

- Some people say message, meaning "Reply to topic"
- Some people say "e-mail" meaning "Reply to Topic"
- Some people say "e-mail" meaning "Personal Message/PM"
I was referring to the PM inbox and outbox.
You can't delete your replies to topics
Bob
-
Hi Twinkleberry
Did you get your emails to open eventually?
If it was a Rootschat notification that you have replies, you can also get to them by pressing the 'Show replies to your posts' button at the top right of the page.
I hope this helps?
kind regards, Arranroots ;)
-
Berlin Bob -
I understand about deleting personal messages (PMS).
I want to delete some of the messages I had sent that a[[ear in my profile listing of messages. I now have over 200 messages in my in box and I thought there was a way to "purge" some of them.
I figured that after awhile a large number of messages would cause / start the system to slow down.
again, thanks for your reply. I won't worry about the number of messages that pile up in my box.

Hi Bob
I am extremely new to this and cannot find my way round this site :-[
I have received a message
A reply has been posted to a topic you are watching by jay jay.
View the reply at: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=179547.new;topicseen#new
However when I click on the reply i do not seem to be able to trace it as when I look in my inbox there is nothing there.
Can you advise me on how to get round this
Regards
Heather
-
Hi Heather
Welcome to Rootschat
When you click on that link it takes you to a topic named "BIRTH LOOK-UP Please" in Westmorland Lookup Requests
At some time, you have replied to this topic and "jay jay" has now replied - scroll down the page to take a look
Your inbox is for personal messages but this is actually a reply to a topic on the public boards.
Does that help?
Have sent you a personal message too.
Best wishes
Casalguidi

What Graham wants to do is what a P.M (not to be confused with a members personel email address) is for the other reason as stated many times is for swapping personal emails so you talk one to one ;)
I know the above post is old but i was looking on the topic to see if there was any mention of what preferably not to use the P.M for.
Bob
I know many members who get lots of request for help or lookups sent on a P.M ;) That really should be started on a new topic. It is hard trying to help on a P.M because You get other P.M in-between and their posts get lost.So would i be correct in saying that P.Ms should only be used for the above reasons.Unless of course the person wants you personally to help(which is nice to be the chosen one 8)
Celia
-
Hi Celia
YES!!
Personal Messages are great for passing information that you don't want to post on the boards, such as email addresses and details of living family.
BUT they can put undue pressure on RootsChat members if they are used to demand further information.
If a RootsChatter wants further assistance, the request is best placed on the same post as the original request, if it relates to it, OR a new request should be started.
Keeping all relevant info together is important - by conducting research by PM you might prevent someone from adding that vital detail that you were after in the first place.
I feel very strongly that it becomes hard to say "No" to people who make requests by PM and I know of RootsChatters who have stopped helping altogether because of constant demands on their time.
A request posted on the boards can be taken up or ignored - this is as it should be.
kind regards, Arranroots ;)
-
A request posted on the boards can be taken up or ignored
I wouldn't say ignored Arranroots ;) when you go through posts to see if you can help and find you cant.you pass it :) If a post hasn't got any replies it usually means so far no one has the answear .Loads of members have read it but passed it:) In regard to Request by P.M.If it isn't your thing ;D The best thing is to advise the sender to put it on the public board new topic as mentioned
Celia
-
I totally agree with you Celia .. but I think Arranroots was trying to make the point that a lot of RootsChatter's haven't the heart to advise them to do that. ;)
They then get involved and this is something AR is trying to help us avoid for our own best interests! :)
-
They then get involved
Yes i know ;) ;) ;) ;D

Hello Berlin Bob. I'm fairly new to RootsChat. Yesterday I got a reply from someone who is connected to my ancestry, and I gave them my e-mail address so I could send things thru to them, but the moderator for Ireland has deleted it because he/she says it could be used for abuse or spam. Now I've read your list of how to do things, but I think I'm being a bit thick, as I don't understand how to e-mail things thru RootsChat. Not being the world's most literate computer person I'm now confused. Can you help me please and explain it to me as though I were a 2 year old doing this for the first time?
Thank you, confused of Spain (Hazel)

Hi Hazel,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
if you look in this topic, you will find answers to most of your questions
Topic: RootsChat Topics: How to use RootsChat / FAQs
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,207046.0.html
there are a couple of topics concerning Personal Messages.
Read them through, and if it's still unclear, then ask again.
Good luck,
Bob

For some strange reason I have suddenly stopped receiving emails when a reply has been posted to a topic I’ve posted in. I have checked my profile under “Notifications and Email” and nothing seems to have changes in my profile. All three options are still selected;
• Receive RootsChat announcements by email.
• Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply.
• Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic.
I tried selecting “notify” in one of my messages as suggested by Berlin-Bob but got a message “Are you sure you wish to disable notification of new replies of this topic” but I want to “enable” them?!?
-
Hi Hanan
This has happened to me sometime in the past and it was my service provider filtering them out as spam. Are you able to check this out?
Did you get a notification for this reply?
Casalguidi :)
-
Hi Casalguidi,
No I didn't get a message for you... I've looked at my blocked senders list and Rootchat isn't listed. ???
It's a bit annoying, missing all the replies :'(
-
Hi Hanan
For now, if you click on "Show new replies to your posts" at the top right of any Rootschat page you won't miss any replies. I know a number of members who tend to use this as their preferred method of not missing anything - just log in periodically to check.
I've looked at my blocked senders list and Rootchat isn't listed
Your service provider could be filtering them out as spam before they get as far as you though - that is what was happening with me and a number of others who use BT some time ago :-\
Casalguidi :)
-
thanks casalguidi,
I've been using the "Show new replies to your posts", don't know what I'd do without it... The email option was much easier though.

Great >:( it's BT I use :'(

Can you log into your email account via this page and check the "bulk" box ???

Hi
I nearly had a fit last year when i went on my own lookup topic to put something on it.I found loads of posts going back a few months that i hadn't had a notification for.Lucky for me it was a one off, because it took me ages to catch up.With it being outdoor work, then trystan fixed it for me ;D
Hanan
when you say the email option what are you referring to?it always confuses me ::)because rootschat doesn't have an email option.Emails are a persons own personnel address, that you can send to another member via a P.M only. Then you can email each other on you computer, and it doesn't go through rootschat
Celia
-
Hanan
when you say the email option what are you referring to?
I am refering to the email that is sent to my own email address "A reply has been posted to a topic you are watching by...
View the reply at: "
I'll check http://bt.my.yahoo.com/ and let you know if I've any luck.
-
Tried http://bt.my.yahoo.com/ no messages there... very strange ???
-
Hanan
I'm with Orange, and they often have the terrible habit of lumping nearly all my Rootschat notifications together and sending them to me overnight.
Sometimes I get 6 or so timed at the same minute!
Yet another reason for me to stay here all day checking my postings ;) as if I needed one ;)
Carol
-
Hi Carol,
Seems like from what everyone is saying I'm gonna have to learn to live without my Rootschat Notifications Messages.
Yet another reason for me to stay here all day checking my postings ;) as if I needed one ;)
I think most Rootchatters are the same. ;D
-
Hi Hanan,
Are you a member of other sites and are their notification messages coming through OK?
Christopher
-
Hi Christopher,
I think I've found the source of my problem. It's with my server, some of my friends have told me their emails are getting bounced back.
Strange because I've been able to send all my mail.
Thanks for all the advice.
-
Dear Bob,
Couldn't find anywhere else to put this (do not hesitate to advise where I should have correctly put it) but for some reason I have ceased to receive notification by E-mail of replies. I have not altered anything to stop replies and have only actually found them by checking in now and again. On checking my profile I cannot find anything that has turned off "notification". Help please.
Sue
-
Hi Sue,
Please check your profile.
=> Notifications and Email -> Edit profile
x Receive RootsChat announcements by email.
x Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply.
x Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic.
You can determine her when you want to receive e-mail notifications
I normall uncheck the last two lines, so I don't autoatically get email notifications,
but turn it on, on the topic itself, for the few topics where I definitely want to be notified)
Underneath this block is a list - Current Topic Notifications
Is the "culprit" in this list ?
If not, you can go to any topic (not just those you have contributed to) and click on the Notify button at the top or bottom of the topic.
regards,
Bob
-
Dear Bob,
Many thanks for response. However, I suspect something more may be wrong (as if I would know!). I checked the things you said and all was well. However at the bottom of Current Topic Notifications I have just clicked on "unsubscribe" (they were subscribed) to reset it - I put all the ticks back in the box but the note underneath still continues to say I am unsubscribed - it definitely didn't say that until I fiddled with it just now!
Twice today I have received under "replies to your posts" a reply to the subject "receiving unwanted E-mails" - I can't understand why this should have suddenly happened - I did not get an E-mail saying there was a message, nor did I get one for your reply.
If you remember, when I first joined, I was the one who was the cause of wrong E-mails being received - do you think there is a problem again?
Sue
-
In addition Bob - I just tried to turn on the notification for any reply from you and when I clicked on notify it asked me if I wanted to TURN OFF the notification!
Sue
-
Hi Sue,
I've checked with "admin" and at the moment all your notifications are turned on, including these two:
x Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply.
x Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic.
This means you will always receive notifications, by default.
The notify button is a toggle switch:
if notifications are ON, clicking on this button turns them OFF
if notifications are OFF, clicking on this button turns them ON
regards,
Bob
-
Thanks Bob. I didn't get a notification for this though.
Sue
-
Sue,
Who is your email provider?
I am with Orange and they are notoriously slow at sending all my mails through.
Most of my Rootschat ones come overnight in one fell swoop ::)
Carol
-
Hi Carol,
My internet provider is BT Broadband (I hope this is what you meant)!
Notifications are switched on and when I try to click on "notify" at the bottom of a post it says "do you want to switch it off" - to me this means it is on and I will or should be, getting a notification. I find messages when I enter Rootschat but there have been no E-mail notifications for a couple of weeks or more.
Sue
-
Sue,
Are you certain that Rootschat has your correct email address?
Have you made sure they aren't being chucked in your spam box?
Carol
-
Hi Carole,
I have noticed on my profile that it says, under "notification board" that "you are not being notified on any boards at the moment" (or something similar). As I say when I try to use the notify button on individual posts it says "do I want to turn notify off". I think, therefore, it is a problem at that end. HOWEVER, and I hadn't thought of this until you mentioned it, my husband God Bless Him, has been mucking around with a new virus thingy I think. I will check with him exactly what he did (I actually think he did it on his laptop not on this machine) and deal accordingly (with him) if he is the culprit. However, when something is blocked I usually see the pop-up thingy which is really only for adverts. If it intercepts E-mails it just means they go into bulk not "in box" with a warning and I have to say we are getting some pretty bizarre ones in there at the moment mostly "viagara" related would you believe, definitely not rootschat which I would recognise from the title. I have to say I don't open unrecognised E-mails as I am told they will continue to arrive if you do this because you have confirmed "someone is there".
I think I am have to just log on each time from now on. I am still getting notifications from Genes Reunited and others by the way.
Sue ???
-
Messages from Rootschat come from RootsChat.com and the email address of
webmaster AT rootschat.com
On my profile I have the following boxes ticked and then a long list of current notifcations underneath.
Receive RootsChat announcements by email. Ticked
Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply.
Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic. Ticked
Good luck.........(Sue's hubby ;D)
Carol
-
you are not being notified on any boards at the moment
Apart from individual topics, you can also switch on notifications for a complete board i.e. when anything happens on this board.
The message just means you have no notifications turned on for whole boards.
Bob
-
Hi Carole, My husband gratefully accepts your good wishes. He is in the clear - he didn't touch this machine!
The setup on mine for notifications is the same as yours and, indeed, was checked by Berlin Bob yesterday. I did re-confirm my E-mail address also.
These little things are sent to try us!!!! >:(
Thanks for your input.
Sue
Thanks for your input also Bob - sadly still not working.
-
I've had not notifications for a few weeks either, and I haven't changed my settings!
-
I also have not had any notifications for some weeks. All of my Rootschat settings looked OK (and had not changed anyway). I use a hotmail account for my genealogy and have just found that it had "helpfully" added Rootschat, along with a number of contacts, to the blocked domains.
I suspect a few people are thinking that I couldn't be bothered to reply to them !.
I am now awaiting my first reply to a post to see whether this has fixed my problem ???
Harry
-
I am now awaiting my first reply to a post to see whether this has fixed my problem ???
Well, here we go ... ;)
-
Harry,
I think the same thing happened to me - my settings were OK and I certainly hadn't altered them. I even re-confirmed my E-mail address and still nothing. I have a BT internet address also and changed to that - now there is no problem.
Sue
-
Success :)
I must write and thank the people at hotmail - NOT >:(
Harry

Same here with Hotmail, Harry!
Thanks for posting.

Tyke is trying to send me a PM. I've just PM'ed her back giving her instructions on how to do it, though I'm unsure what the warnings mean ???
By the way Tyke, this is what happens when you press "Quote", a little blue box appears with your original message, and then you can type a reply under the quote.

Welcome to RootsChat Tyke :)
Are you trying to PM someone who has under 3 or 4 posts to their name? My guess is that the error message you are getting is because the recipient's inbox is full.
:)

Thanks for the response - I've cracked it now (don't know how!!!) so I'm underway

Hi Tati
I wasn't aware inboxes can fill up. I do have a bad habit of keeping all my messages for reference purposes - currently showing 6 pages of PM's.
Is it about time I do a bit of "Spring Cleaning" :D
Les
PS Tyke is now able to PM successfully.
-
[I wasn't aware inboxes can fill up.
You're safe Les! 8) It only concerns people who have done under 3 or 4 posts.

Thanks Tati - learn something new every day ;D

Please note that Trystan has made some adjustments to the PM facility in order to tackle the spam we have been getting lately, so new Rootschatters with not many posts (5 or fewer I think) will be unable to PM. This prevents people from joining purely to send spam in PMs.
This position will presumably be reviewed in due course.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Ah, SO glad I read this - I've been wondering why I couldn't reply to the PM someone sent me! Now I know I just need to post more.... hmm, but where?!
-
Hi squirrel,
Wishing you a very warm welcome to RootsChat .. ! :D
If you reply to me on here .. you'll have two .. so at least it's a start .. ! ;D
Kind regards,

How long do they take to "register" as it were? I've been posting here and there ever since I did the original message here (more than 5 I think) but it still says I only have 1 post to my name :(
Thanks
-
Or do posts in some forums not "count"? I thnk all mine were "lighter side" or the other random one - what's it called...?
-
Hmm posts here certainly seem to "count" but I can't just clog this thread up!
-
Berlin Bob -
Due to situations beyond my control I haven't been on or able to access rootschat for over a year.
I hope to become a regular participant shortly. Is there a thread where I can "catch up" on any new policies, procedures and the like?
Thanks in advance.

Hello sdholland,
Messages on boards offer a reply facility underneath the message ... click that button and make you reply then click the preview button ... if you're satisfied with the message click the post button.
Private Messages have quote, reply and delete buttons. If you use Quote the message you received will be shown in your reply but be careful to look for slash quote in brackets at the end of the message and start your reply below that otherwise your reply and the received message will appear together in the same block. If you start your message below slash quote in brackets the received message appears in its own block with your reply below it. If you don't want the received message quoted click the reply button.

Further to Christopher's reply - if you're talking about Personal Messages, currently you need to have made 5 or more posts on the boards to use this facility. This is a recent development to prevent spam.
Welcome and I hope you are enjoying Rootschat
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

I just tried to send a PM & got this message
PM could not be sent to 'xxxx xxxxxxx' due to the max. PM limit.
Is it a limit on my profile or the recipients ?
regards John
-
Hi John,
It's usually the recipient, although if you have a lot of PMs you can try deleting some and see if it still happens.
Most common cause is that the recipient is new and has no postings. this automatically applies a "max. PM limit".
regards,
Bob
-
Hi all!
I have just had the same issue with the pm system, returning a message telling me the pm can't be sent because of the max limit.
I'd just finished weeding out my pm box, so I don't think it's my end. The pm is going to a new member, but I have previously sent them a pm here so I'm unsure as to why there's an issue.....
..... any ideas?
Lass x
-
hello Lass; I have sent a PM to someone else since. so it is not my profile; & like you I have sent a PM previously to my intended recipient, who is not a new member, but one with only one posting to his name & that was say 3 years ago. ... so who knows .. regards John.
-
Hi John
Perhaps there is a maximum limit if there have been few posts? The member I'm trying to contact has only made one post, but it was to connect with me!
If it helps mods at all, the member is TORRES 33.
Lass x
-
The "max- limit" usually refers to new members, as they can only use the PM system when they have made several posts.
This is a protective measure against misuse of the system.
regards,
Bob
-
Hi :),
I have a pm limit messege coming up on my personal messege inbox at the moment how do I resolve this as it won't let me send any more at the moment.

Sarah
-
Hi Sarah,
see the previous posting.
Does this message come up on all PMs or only when sending to new members ??
Bob
-
Hi,
It was a new memeber I was sending the PM to I think he had only done 1 post, that could be it. I wasn't sure what PM limit ment as I had'nt had it up before. Thanks for clearing it up for me.
Sarah
-
Hi,
Could you help me?? I have tried sending a PM to a newcomer but keep getting the message 'cannot be sent due to the Max PM limit', what does this mean and how do I make contact with them? I haven't had this problem before.
Many Thanks,
Melm
-
Hi Melm,
please see the previous replies :)
-
??? Hi Bob,
I have read the previous posts with interest, am I correct in assuming that I (as an regular member) cannot contact this new member nor he contact me? This being the case I assume the only method of contact is through the posts, forgive me if I am wrong but could you confirm if I have come to the correct conclusion.
Kind Regards,
Melm
-
Hi Melm,
yes, that's right - until somone has made three postings, you can only contact them through replies to topics.
Bob
-
This can get confusing for newcomers, so here are a few words of explanation ...
And by the way, that only applies to e-mail notifications;
sorry, but you cannot switch off entries in the
Show unread posts since last visit. or the Show new replies to your posts. list.
Unfortunately, there is no standard "naming convention" on RootsChat;
when talking about their input on RootsChat:
- Some people say message, meaning "Personal Message/PM"
- Some people say message, meaning "Reply to topic"
- Some people say "e-mail" meaning "Reply to Topic"
- Some people say "e-mail" meaning "Personal Message/PM"
Added: (see Reply #4)
- Some people say posting, meaning "Reply to topic"
Hope this helps,
Bob
-
I have had a private message and wish to reply but cannot find any way to do this. Anyone help?
-
Hello RedLeader and welcome to Rootschat.
You have to make 3 postings on the boards before you can use the PM system.
So, if you make one more post here you should be able to reply to your PM.
Barbara
-
Thank you for that question and answer. I was going to ask exactly the same thing! ;)
-
Many thanks for that information Barbara, much appreciated.
-
I had only made one post when I got a personal message which I was able to access but not reply to until I had made 3 posts, this is my 3rd post so hopefully I will be able to reply to the message now.
-
I always envy people when they say this Ellie .. I had about 200 posts before anyone even attempted to send me a PM .. ! ::) ;D ::)
Wishing you a very warm welcome to RootsChat .. ! :) :)
-
Dear Bob,
I sent an Email of a posting on RootsChat to a friend. Questions: 1. Where is it stored? 2. How do I recover it (for further details etc)?
Many thanks
Bill
-
Hi Bill
Bob's busy so I hope you don't mind if I try to help?
Did you use the Send to a Friend button? If yes, the friend would receive a link to the topic, which they can click on.
I don't think the system records the fact that you've sent it, nor do you get a copy in your Sent Items, so you need to try to remember what the topic was & use Search Rootschat to find it again.
If you posted on the topic, however, you will find it by going into your Profile, where all your posts are duplicated.
Or you could ask the friend to Forward a copy of the email to you?
Hope this helps.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
-
I am new to this - I made one posting and then got a personal message back - but I cannot see any way I can reply to it! Can anyone help?
Thanks
-
Hi gillm,
Welcome to rootschat. You need to make at least 3 more postings then you will be able to PM the person. If you look at the How to use Rootschat, FAQ's highlighted in red, this will explain.
Just post a couple of smilies back and that will help with your postings.
Cheers
KHP :D
-
Many thanks for your info and you welcome.

-
Hi yn9man,
Can you delete or "zero out" the personal message section or is it an ongoing "counter"?
not quite sure how you mean that, so if this doesn't help, ask again.
The "You have xxx messages" is a permanent counter and always appears, if you are logged in to RootsChat.
It always shows the number of messages currently in your in-box.
Bob
The above is quite old but I found it while trying to find an answer to rhe same question.
I found that my messages stuck at 30 (OK.maybe I should have deleted a few) but does the system now limit the in-tray to 30?
I was looking back for some of the first messages I received when I joined a month ago and they are no longer there.
David
-
Thanks Gadget; that wasn't quite the problem.
I get the impression that the system progressively deletes personal messages, oldest first, and only allows up to 30 to be held.
Am I wrong? Otherwise, why have somr of my first replies from last month been lost??
David
-
David,
PMs do not get deleted by the system - some members have many 100s of PMs in their In and Out boxes (but PMs are really private e-mails, so we do suggest a bit of judicious weeding now and again, just like any other e-mail box).
As Gadget says, the best (indeed, so far the only) method of combatting this, is the
'show most recent personal messages on top' method.
If this doesn't work for your PMs, then this is a new problem :(
Bob
-
Thank you for your info.
-
David,
PMs do not get deleted by the system -***
If this doesn't work for your PMs, then this is a new problem :(###

### It maybe it always happens to me ::)
but thanks, David

Is there a way of stopping getting the 'new replies to your posts' for one thread only ... I made a single contribution to a particular thread months ago, maybe even a year ago, and every day almost I get 'new reply to my post' ... I'm quite happy to get other 'new replies' ... its just that particular one that is getting a trifle annoying !
If not, I'll grin and bear it ... :-\
-
I don't think there is, Lydart. I've got a few of them as well :-\
There've been other threads on this problem somewhere and the answer seems to be NO :(
We have to grin ;D ...........................
and bear it :-\
Gadget
PS - that's why this topic popped up on my 'New Replies' . I must have posted on here at some stage ;D
-
OK !! (Sigh ...)
:-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
This is me grinning and bearing it ...
-
Happens to me too. But when I see it in my in tray, I delete it without reading it, and then I get no more posts. :)
That means that you don't check. just out of curiosity.... ;)
meles

How about checking out on your profile what posts you get notified for and untick the ones you don't want to be notified about anymore.
Or at the top of this post is a button that says notify. if you click on that I think it will ask you if you do not/do want to be notified about the current post.
Hope I make sense. I may have just confused myself here.
Newbe
-
If you click 'notify' it asks if you wished to be notified of replies. I didnt click it, as I've only just on this thread, found out what it was for !
There isn't an option of NOT being notified of replies !! :(
-
If you click Notify after you have posted on a topic it will ask you
"Are you sure you wish to disable notification of new replies for this topic"
Hope this helps
Newbe
-
No. Once you've answered a particular thread, any answers will keep popping up on your 'new replies'.
Tell me about it! I still keep getting notifications of replies from postings I replied to ages ago. I'm only replying to this posting because I replied to it some time ago, and it keeps coming up my notifications.
I have since learnt, that one should not reply to postings unless they relate to you, or you can help somebody out. If you can help somebody out, and you don't want to want notifications, send that person a PM - some people have done that with my postings.
Never reply to a thread that has a lot of previous replies. For example, I replied to "What music are you listening to now". It was a new topic with just a few replies, so I replied to it. This topic went into the 100's, and I was notified every time somebody else replied. Thankfully, that topic was "locked" by the person who first posted it, and I was saved from any more notifications.
In saying that, I have received reply notifications to old postings which have been months old, and have learnt something from it, so I was glad to be notified.
Guess one has to take the "good with the bad" ;D
Les

Hello all
In order to be a bit contructive, we do try to keep Off-Topic threads to 20 pages (yes, I know - 20 is a lot of pages!)
We also try to keep other threads short, and encourage those who start the threads to lock and start afresh if they get too long. (Please add a link, if you choose to do this, in order that we can keep track!)
Sorry there's not much else we can do - the only consolation is that the Mods get this just the same as everyone else, lol!
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hi Flight Engineer
Little Nell is one of our team of volunteer Moderators. I'm not sure what she removed, whether it was a post you started or just one that you've contributed to but I'll try to find out and will let you know by Personal Message.
You might need to reply to this in order to get the Pm system working, please!
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
-
I Am new and received an e-mail notification (oct.28)
"A topic you are watching has been removed by
Little Nell"
A need an explination, Why?
Who is Little Nell?
Thanks. Flight engineer
Flight engineer- believe you had posted the same message twice on the same thread (perhaps clicked the post button twice?) and that's why one was deleted.
-
Yes, there was a duplicate post, so I removed one. No difference between the two so rather than people get confused or them posting answers on two separate threads (and potentially leading to duplication of effort) I removed one.
Sorry to have confused you :-[
Nell

Tom,
I have only just read your message of last June.I would like to make contact again. Do we do it through RootsChat or regular emails?
Please let me know . I will be checking up on RootsChat for a reply.
Jenty
-
Jenty- you have to make a few posts before you can send PMs (personal messages). If you go to Tom's post and see a green scroll under his name on the left side of the post click on it. Then write your message in the box and click send. Email addresses should not be posted online. I notice that you've already tried to contact Tom in Feb.2008 (perhaps he's been busy or unable to reply for some reason) so after you send your PM it's a matter of waiting.
-
Hi Jenty,
Some information which might help you and your cousin Tom.
1. See Tom's post at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,285354.msg1687059.html#msg1687059
It is dated 13 Feb 2008 and reads:
Hello there,
I believe this lady to be my cousin, who was nicknamed "Jenty" by members of her family. I have sent her a response giving some private details and she would instantly recognise me, even though I'm referred to as tommacgregor on Rootschat.
Kind Regards,
Tom.
However, that thread is locked which means, unfortunately, that you can't post on it.
2. As aghadowey say, you need to have made a certain number of posts before you can send PMs to another RootsChatter. I think it's three. But I think you can receive PMs which have been sent to you regardless of the number of posts you've made.
Anyway, try it.
For personal messages see top right of any RootsChat page.
And to increase your message count it doesn't matter what you write in your post - even if you just post to say thanks or to say that you are posting in order to increase your message count so that you can send someone a PM ;D
Hope this helps,
JAP
PS: I've edited this post.
I've checked through other threads on this board and it seems that
a) if a person has posted 2 or fewer posts, they can receive PMs but only up to a maximum of 20
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,25856.0.html
and
b) 3 is the number of posts needed before a new member can send a PM.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm trying to contact Poldweia.
I tried to send you a Personal Message but have now discovered that Rootschat rules state that a new Rootschatter has to make 3 postings before they can use the Personal Message system (it's a security thing!).
You should get notification of this message as you've already contributed to the thread. Can you please make 2 more posts to bring your total up to 3 and then send me a Personal Message just to let me know that you're 'up and running'.
It's to do with the Barsleys of Lincolnshire - you and I are the only Rootschat members with the name Barsley listed in their Surname Interests.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that I'll hear from you. ;D

Hey ...I'm so glad i just read this..
I joined yesterday.. and some kind soul sent me a Pm.. and I kept looking.. and looking and i just couldn't see how to reply..
I did notice this thread here and looked at the beginning.. but there's quite a few pages so today i cheated and looked at the end..
I was actually going to come on here and jump up and down with glee.. at having, ( so i thought!!!) discovered how to use the fiendish thing..
As co-incidentally I'd made a couple of posts today.. which of course fixed the problem..
So thanks folks.. I thought I was having a particularly slow moment...

Hello new people! :D
If you have any questions, just ask - we all remember what it was like to be new.
You can find the Moderators at the bottom of the main page - we're the ones in red - click on a name and send a Personal Message (if you've made enough posts to make the system work) or just start a new topic on the Beginners board to ask generally and we try to keep an eye open to answer them.
Welcome and i hope you enjoy the site.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
-
Thanks Arranroots..
Next time I find myself stuck i'll go in search of a nice red mod to help me out..
From what i've seen... theres a really nice athmosphere here.. so its a pleasure to be here.. and hopefully..i'll soon find my way around.. without being too much of a pest..
Ps.. Hi Frenchlady.. its a comfort to know i'm not the only one..

Hello Garland
Welcome to Rootschat :)
Well, you have cracked posting a "normal" message.
You need to post a couple more times on the boards in order to activate the Personal Message system, if that what you meant.
Why don't you post a query and we can all try to help?
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
-
hi Arranroots
thanks for your help i,ll try what you said and hope for the best ,i spose like most new comers to a site it sometimes takes abit of time to get into the swing of it all cheers garland

You're welcome Garland :D
Have a look at the Beginners board (even if you aren't new to Family History) and How to Use Rootschat - lots of helpful tips there!
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Help I'm not very good at the technical side re posting replies. I tried to post a PM fairly long and when I submitted a message came up to say this could't be done. I've since looked at the Rootchatter and he/she has only posted one message. I should have looked before I began. Is there any way that I can transfer the PM to the ordinary way to post. If not I'll have to start again. Also how can I ensure the message gets to the relevant person?
Sorry about this confusion but I started this rather late in life and don't have a great deal of expertise.
Hoping you can help.
Thanks
-
If you still have the PM on the screen** just highlight all the text, copy and then paste into a reply on post (remembering not to include personal details, email addresses, etc. which shouldn't be posted on message boards.
**if you can't see PM you typed try using backspace button (usually top left of your screen) to get to it.
-
Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestions and managed to copy the text but was unable to paste, not sure what I did wrong. In the end I redid the message and put it on the ordinary posting. At least I now relise that I can only do a PM if the recipient has made the correct number of postings. Will be more careful in future!
-
why do i have to make three posts before i can pm?
-
it's okay, i've done it now - thanks
-
I am a new member, really pleased to recieve a reply to my posting, would love reply to this member, but finding it impossible to do so. Please- any suggestions
-
Sorry I have just realised I have to do 3 postings first.
-
Hi Gelert
Your offer would be great but as I have only just registered I am not totally sure of the protocol
-
Hi Collieh
You should be able to use the PM system now - are you sorted?
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
-
Hmmmm,
potentially a great site, but have never been on one so confusing or less intuative ;D
Still, that maybe says more about me than the site!
-
Give it time Calummac- you'll love us soon ;D

Yes - I think so thanks
collieh
-
thank you to the people who replied to my query re heathers,, i am struggling to find a way to reply to you
-
Hi lheather
If you click on the buttom at the top of the screen, where it says Profile
- then scroll down to where it offers to show you the latest posts you've made
- click there and then click on your message and you can reply to it to say thanks!
Once you've made a few more posts you will be able to send a Personal Message if you prefer.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
-
It's just been pointed out to me that Lheather's thread was locked - maybe you clicked on it by mistake?
Anyway, I've unlocked it now, so you should be able to reply.
:)

Hello, as I'm new to this site it's take in me a bit to work the hole thing out, But have read some interesting information on what looks like the information i'm looking for

Hi Bob,
I have recently come across a post of interest to me which is a year old, and would like to contact the poster. However, their last login was some six months ago, so they are unlikely to see either a new post or a PM. Is there any way that RootsChat can act as an intermediary to facilitate an email contact?? Thanks
tmpalmer
-
Sorry, but Rootschat can't contact a member directly on your behalf. If you post on the thread and send PM (members need 3 posts for using PM system) then it's just a matter of waiting.
-
OK, thanks Aghadowey. Unfortunately my poster has only two posts, so I can't send PM. Looks like I've come to a deadend. Maybe facilitating direct contact is something RootsChat could think about for the future.
tmpalmer
-
If youve posted on the thread there's always a chance they will see your message and get in touch.

Hi tmpalmer, :)
At times you do only need two posts for some reason. I see the person you wish to contact already has the green scroll activated below their name : (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Themes/history/images/im_off.gif)
Click on the scroll, you may be able to send them a message, no harm in trying ! :)
Kind regards,
Pels.

I have just received a message but cannot reply to it, help. ???
-
Do you mean a PM (personal message)? Members usually need 2/3 posts before they can use PM system so try again an see if it works.

I am new. I received a Personal Message and I cannot find any place to respond to it. I went onto Chatterbox and someone there sent a message to the person I wanted to contact. I have received a message from them but I can't respond to it. Help

The problem is that you havem't enough posts to be able to use PM system properly- see Help pages-

I just read the message that it takes 2/3 post to be able to use the personal message program. This would be post no 2.

Hello - years ago (it seems) I posted a reply to this topic & got my answer thanks.
& I then kept getting notification by email that there had been a subsequent reply to this topic - which I was no longer interested in.
On the email it alliowed me to unsubscribe from this topic which I did & I no longer get the emails
However - these still appear when I look at 'new replies too my posts'
How do you get rid of these please ?
cheers John
-
I'm afraid there's no way John.
Unless a mod takes pity on us and kills it off before its time, we have to live in hope that it reaches 20 pages some day. (Seeing as it seems to keep being split, it may outlive us though ;D)
-
Tati; I notice that on 'My Profile'/'Notifications & Email' there is a means to unsubscribe from selected Current Topic Notifications.
Do you think I'm going to look through 94 pages of 15 topics per page to achieve my aim. You are right - I'm not :-\
cheers John
-
However - these still appear when I look at 'new replies too my posts'
If you aren't interested in the subject any more - just ignore the notification ;D
-
Hi,
I am not able to send PMs is there a restriction on this?
Thanks.
-
Ok sorry just read you need 3 posts before you can PM.
-
How do I go about asking a simple question?
Where do I ask it?
It concerns a late relative with a known surname.
-
Hi Rushmore
Welcome to Rootschat! :)
You can try on the Beginners' Board if you like and we can always move it. Please don't mention living or very recently deceased people in your request though. You can get around this by asking in more general terms about the unusual surname, or for general guidance.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Thank you for the help Bob

how do i post a message. please help.

Go up to the top of this page. Click on the forum button. This gives you a list of the various forums. The first one in the list is called “Beginners.” This might be a good place to post your message [the moderators can move the message to another forum if need be]. Click on “Beginners.” Near the upper right corner of the list of topics is a “New Topic” button. Click that and then write your message and post it.

Many thanks

When Googling yesterday I came upon messages (on this site) from someone who is obviously connected with my family. I registered with RootsChat and posted a reply to one of those messages.
Unfortunately, that forum member has not been active since posting his or her messages 18 months ago. I haven't been able to send a PM either to him or to the moderator, because there doesn't seem to be a link.
I really would like to share information with this member. Would it be possible to send him an email?
-
New members usually need 3 posts to use PM (personal message) system so if you post another reply to this thread you should have 3 posts and can send a PM to person you wish to contact.
-
Ah, that explains it. Thank you very much. I'll just have to hope he picks up the message ....
-
Hello Bob, I used to use this site often a few years ago and recently returned as I am helping a lady in England w/research on her family that came to America. I have received several PM's in regards to the research which will be of great help to her and I need to know if there is a way I can send Her the info directly from my PM page and if not is there any way I can Allow Her to access my PM page? I have nothing there which can not be viewed by all. Thanks a lot for any help. Lea Mitchell in America. Known as Leagen here.
-
Hello Lea
Sorry - you will have to cut and paste the info from your PMs: there isn't a way to pass on the info.
;)
-
Thanks Bob! Very useful!
-
shane, im related to your mum(Bridie)
-
Dear Leagen,
I'm hoping that's what the 'Quote' button is for. I've just used it to send my cousin (also a Rootschatter - so maybe that's the key!) some information that was passed on to me via a PM.
I haven't tried it before but as I knew his Rootschat user name it was ok. I took out the original person's name who sent me the info, from the top of the PM (in the 'To' field), leaving just his user name and then altered the subject title just to make it clear it was from me - just in case.
I've only just done it so am not sure if it'll work! I've yet to hear back from him. I'll keep you posted unless you try it out and get a quicker response than me.
All the best

Hi Shane, I'm related to your mum(Bridie nee Rattigan). Jones .

Shane Jones.

Hi Bob, I mean the message for Shane Jones(Bridie's son).
-
I am having real trouble sending a message even with all the help.
I have an old bible which belonged to a William Gammage - Ravensthorpe, Northampton. I would love to get this back to it's rightful family and when I looked at the name RootsChat came up. How can I get this message to the people who have put William Gammage on RootChat?
Queeniewatt.
-
Hi Queeniewatt,
Welcome to RootsChat ! :) :)
I believe this is the thread you were referring to :
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,198629.0.html
To send a personal message you will have to make two, possibly three posts to enable the facility. By replying to this it will help. To actually send the message, click on the green scroll (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Themes/history/images/im_off.gif) under the person's name/avatar.
Or you could reply directly on the thread.
Best wishes,
Pels.
-
Thank you Pels, still not sure what I'm doing, wanted to send details to Carol02 as she appears to have the connection with William Gammage, but it asked for an email, which, ofcourse, I don't have.
Any ideas what I do next as a technaphobe?
Cheers
Queenie
-
Queenie,
I have no idea why you should be asked for an e-mail when trying to send a personal message as Pels has already described. Carol was online yesterday.
An alternative is to add a reply to her thread about Gammage, which can be found here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,198629.0.html
She should then see the message as a reply to her posts when she next logs on. Or if she has notifications turned on, she will know that someone has replied to her post.
Perhaps you would like to try this option?
Nell

hi i know this will sound dead stupid but i cant even work out where i click on to ask a question on roots.chat.com !!! i joined today and want to ask a question but dont know how to i would be very greatful if you could tell me please. pippy17
-
Hi, pippy17, and welcome.
All you need to do is click on "Forum", at the top, scroll down to the topic you are interested in, and click on the title. You'll then have the option to "Start a new topic". Don't worry if you make a mistake - the Moderators will redirect your question to the correct thread.
Have a browse here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,207046.0.html
You should find the answers to most of your questions.

Hi Bob
I have received a reply to a post...via email, and have logged in etc, and can read the post, but cannot find a way to reply to the person who sent me the post; any ideas as to how I do taht
regards
Marie
PS I have read your blogs and tried through the links you already suggest but I can't find anywhere which allows me to reply
-
Hi Marbee,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Do you mean that you can't reply on the topic, or that you can't send a PM ?
The recipient (original poster) may need 3 posts before s/he can use the PM system.
regards,
Bob
-
Hi Bob
I am very new just a couple of days. I have found a person willing to do a look up in Bristol but I can't see how to contact her. There is no reply button so I am stuck. I might be missing the point so would appreciate any help.
Many thanks
Chris
-
Hi Chris,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Offers are usually locke, as too many replies about different people makes the topics hard to read later. Just make a request on the Gloucestershire Requests board, and the "offerer" (or other members who can also help) will see it there.
regards,
Bob

Hi Bob
Thank you for your email. I will give it a try. Still very new will get it one day
Many thanks again Chris

Hi, I'm also trying to PM someone, having newly joined and immediately found the person I was looking for. I don't want to make irritating posts just to get my three posts in, so can I use this thread to 'get qualified'?
Nicky
-
I belive that it's only posts on the Common Room Board that don't qualify. You are now up to two: only one more needed....
-
That's great - thanks for the quick reply!
-
And now you can PM!
-
I belive that it's only posts on the Common Room Board that don't qualify. You are now up to two: only one more needed....
It's actually just postings on Lighter Side and Totally Off Topic boards which are child boards of COMMON Room which don't add to you post count.
-
damned 3 posts until PM! (2 to go ???)
-
and done
-
Why do we need 3 posts before we can PM?
-
How do I send a message to another member?
-
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Adding a reply on the post that interests you would be a good place to start. :)
For Personal messages, have a look at the Help pages here:
http://www.rootschat.com/help/pms.php
You need to make 2 or 3 posts before you can access the personal message system. The site is set up so that less than serious posters (those who join just to post links to dubious sites, for example) cannot use the system.
Please stay with us, make another post or two -? perhaps ask a family history question and then you can use the system.
Nell
-
Aaaah, I had been looking for a way to find the messaging feature!
Thank you, Nell :)
-
Thank you for these tips :)
-
2 posts down 1 to go............
-
Thanks Bob - this is still all a bit of a maze for me!
-
Interesting ? I had a PM yesterday from a member who has only done 2 posts !
-
I am a new member and I have posted a couple of messages regarding my ancestors.
I received an enquiry from someone but there is no option to reply to them.
I have read all of the FAQs but that didn't help.
Can somebody please tell me how to reply to a message when there is no "Reply" button anywhere on the screen?
Thanx,
Hannibal 1754
-
Hmm, seems that I need to post a couple of messages before I can use PMs, replies, etc - how strange.
Here is a dummy post.
-
Hi, Welcome to RootsChat. :)
It is not really so strange. There are some people who only join to post spam or other unsuitable material. To allow such people immediate access to the personal message system was deemed unwise, so this system was introduced.
Every new member is welcome and many stay with us a long time. We hope you do too.
Nell
-
Hi Nell,
Thanks for clarifying that.
Best wishes,
Hannibal
-
Have just finished reading the 24 pages on this subject and would like to thank all the contributors who have helped the newcomers like myself.
If I've got it right it seems I have to post not less than 3 subjects - or post not less than 3 replies to this (or other ?) subject/s, before others can send PMs to me or I can send PMs to them.
Is this correct ?
Any and all responses/assistance would, as always, be sincerely appreciated.
My thanks, in advance.
esprit9
esprit9
-
That is correct. Posts on any topic will suffice. You should now be able to use the system.
Welcome, and enjoy your time here.
Andrea
-
Sillgen : Hello & many thanks for your prompt response.
I'd also like to thank some of the other "moderators" whose posts have been particularly helpful for me and, I'm sure, for other beginners.
Do I list their names in a post to this board, or do I address them individually on this board, or do I send a PM (when able) to each person ?
Hope you still have time to assist.
Many thanks & kind regards from
esprit9

This site is impossible. I have been bouncing around the various options for ages now unable to make out how to post a simple message. So amielou86 if you are out there please get in touch!
-
Make one more posting (you have two so far) ... just say hello, or something ! ... and then after that, you'll see a little 'reply' button at the bottom of the postings. Click that, and away you go ! That works on any thread on any subject.
If you want to send a PM (personal message) then once you have your three postings, you'll see a little green scroll under the persons avatar on the left; click that and you can then send a private message to that person.
Good luck ... and do ask if you have any more problems. You'll see many of us have managed to post 4000 or more messages, so it does work !
-

Hello, :) :)
I've sent a message to amielou86 with a link to your reply on here. Hopefully she'll now contact you. I can see the green scroll on your profile which Lydart mentioned, so hopefully your message system will already be activated.
Kind regards,
Pels.

Thank you for your help. I'll keep trying

Think you should have put this on the Northamptonshire board where you might get help !

I split off the Thompson post just as you must have been posting it, Lydart. Have moved to Beginners board for the moment as it may eventually be better on Travelling People board.

thanks
Kerry
-
Welcome to Rootschat. Once you've made 3 posts you can use PM (Personal Message) system to contact other members (just check that they also have at least 3 posts)- it's explained in the Help pages (click on HELP button at top of page.
-

Kerry
Surely your first method of making contact should be a note under the message that you're interested in.You can introduce yourself to the person who you have ancestors in common with(remember not to mention living people)and then after you've made 3 postings you will be able to send PM's(personal messages) to each other.

I have not been active on RC until recently after I retired. It amazes me how many people keep asking the most basic questions. Yes the answer is there in the help file, but I do not think the help file is very user friendly particularly for new users, who want to "get stuck in" as quickly as possible and may not be aware the answer is there in the help file, if only they dig. I know I have struggled at times to find the information I want
I realize a major overhaul is a big task for volunteers but I really do think it needs doing and if you need any help count me in

I am new to this site and have no idea what I am doing! I am hoping someone can provide some information on Nicholas Wayman - born about 1791 in Durham, England. I am hoping to find any info on his parents. He married Ann "wayman" - from Stockton Upon Tees - I am hoping to find her maiden name and possibly her parents.
This has also been posted on the Durham board

Thought this is the best way to try my first reply. Fingers crossed!

Hi all - Yes I also find this site so complicated and daunting to use - I am not too computer literate - so I have really given up on trying to find out anything more about my WAYMAN side. Maybe they should do a tutorial for dummies! Thanks, Pauline
-
Don't give up, Wayman. What specifically are you having trouble with? Someone will help you.
-
Hello Wayman - I'm sure after a little more use you won't find Rootschat daunting at all. We all feel somewhat like
that when a Beginner.
As Erato says - give a little information on what you would like to find out and someone will be along to help.
Guaranteed ;) ;)

Your Wayman query was split from this topic and if you click on the link below you will see it as well as several replies-

Hi
I am trying to send someone a PM but get back a message C'ant send reached max PM limit. What does this mean?
-
Hi Gerry,
If you are sending PMs to new members who have less than three posts you will receive an error message, that your limit, or allowed number has been reached. (note that it says your limit, although it actually refers to the recipient.)
You'll find that here :
http://www.rootschat.com/help/pms.php
Kind regards,
Pels.
-
Hi Pels
Thanks for that.I am trying to contact a new member who unfortunately has'nt replied to the first message I sent and I tried to send a second pm.I guess I will just have to wait to see if they reply or post on the site.
Regards Gerry
-
Hi again Gerry,
Just a thought, but if they've already replied once on a thread - would it be worth your while to try and contact them via that same thread - they might receive an email notification enabling them to see that you are trying to make contact.
Best wishes,
Pels.

Please Berlin Bob How do I start a topic? How can I reply to a post made in 2005 which came up without any 'live' RootsChat page I have the topic name: Re: LAURENCE family in Clapham in 1861 Census but how can I get on that page so the sender (Keith Sherwood) might know about it, or be told about it. ???

Thanks JenB and thanks aghadowey --
It is really good to read all these new people who like me find the site so hard to suss out at first!
If it's made complicated in order to put spam-pushers and blasphemers into despair I suppose that must be a good thing. Aghadowey - you've 'split' the Laurence family topic but I can't find the split
JenB seems to have replied to me . . but at the top of my page it says I have 0 messages
-
but at the top of my page it says I have 0 messages
That means Personal Messages.
To see new replies, which you haven't already read, you need to click on 'Show new replies to your posts'.
The Lawrence family topic is still where it was http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,624140.msg488020.html#msg488020 your replies are on page 2.
-
to JenB -Thank you so much for making those details clear! I have actually sent a PM (I think) to Richard Sherwood (full of typos which I didn't notice till I'd clicked send) One has to learn the language of the site I realise. :)

Hi i just wondered when im asking people for help and they ask for infomation ,am i aloud to type out what ive found on census records /marriage certificates or is that classed as copy write copying ?i dont want to get into trouble
-

Generally yes, because the copyright is usually on the transcription, and not the actual content of the document. It's best to put it into your own words, because cutting and pasting can sometimes reveal the source of your information (for instance, Ancestry use a specific way of notating census references, which you should avoid cutting and pasting). The major exception is the 1911 census, and with that all you are allowed to post is what you can find in the free indexes. With images of documents, it's best to crop them so that we're only seeing the part of interest to the discussion.
-
how do i PM someone?
-
Click on the button with the "page of paper" on under their name. You will only just qualify to do that now as you need 3 posts to access the system.
-
So from what I understand I need to have 2 or more posts to send PMs?
Conveniently this will be the second post, after the first drew a PM, so I guess I'll find out soon
-
'hi,
Great resource, needing to get 3 posts.

-
Is there anyway I can get a message to a contributor. some one who has given information on my grandfather is a cousin that I have lost contact with over the years. I just want to send my contact information to her.
-
You (and they) will need 3 posts to use PM (Personal Message) system- one more reply here will do that for you-
http://www.rootschat.com/help/pms.php
Added- if this is the topic then it looks like they've only made 1 post but try send a PM just in case it does get through. You've just posted on there 2 days ago so they might eventually reply on the topic.

Maria, you've been a member since 2011, have made (including this one) 13 posts and managed to post here so I'm not sure what the problem is.
This looks like the post you are interested in-
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,434860
Go to that topic, click on the reply button, type in your message and then press post (just like you did here).

Hi MucMuc,
Ensure you are logged in. Click on following link,
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,434860.msg2988872.html#msg2988872
There is a blue "reply" button, before and after Orkney's post, (which is an old one), press one of them, and enter your reply. She has not been onsite since Monday 09 January 12 18:10 GMT (UK).
However someone else may respond. Remember and "Post" once you have typed reply.
Tom
-
Maria- you apparently quoted the previous message but did something so that the quote didn't appear properly and as your message was at the top of the page it looked like you were asking for help. However, MucMuc has now managed to reply on the right topic so all is well.

Hi
Thank you Bob, as a 'newcomer' I found this very helpful.

Hello Sue here just wondering if anyone knows anything about tracing a family member in social care.
-
Just wondering if anyone had seen my first post about finding adopted relatives. Would love to find her after 70 years. Help!

Now you have made 3 posts you can be contacted via private message.
Post on the above thread once again and maybe someone will have the knowledge to help you.

I'm just trying to figure out how to find my long lost cousin Albert Bird Armstrong. He has posted some things on this site so I know he exists. i would appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks, Resu
-
If you are looking for a living person, make sure any information is shared by private message!
-
Sorry, Bob. ???
I just don't see "you have xxx messages, yy are new".
Has the site changed since you posted? And, what am I to do, to see Private Messages?
-
In the brown band at the top of this page, where it says Home ,Forum etc etc.
There is one that says MY MESSAGES- click on that it will take you to your personal messages.
-
Yes we had a big revamp last Christmas. :)
Here's a picture of it.
Next to "My Messages" is a [1].
It shows that somebody has sent me a new message.
Best regards,
-
Excellent - thank you. And, now, how do I see messages to me that are NOT private ones (if there are such things)? Also, any replies to my past posts?
-
Oh, and by the way, if you look at the left of people's posting, if they are online you'll see a green Personal Message button. Just press that to send them a Personal Message.
(If they are offline, the button is just black & white, but you can still send a message by pressing it in exactly the same way).
-
Aha! And is a Personal Message the same thing as a Private Message?
-
Yes - it's the same thing, just a different name for it. Some people just use the term PM for it too.
Oh, to see new replies, click on [ New Replies ] on the top-left to see all the 'public' replies to you.
To see all your posts go to "Profile" then click on "Show Posts".
Trystan

I'm only replying as I just switched on and it was one of the 'unreads' for today.
My bewilderment equals yours aghadowey. The name give a sense of worry too.
Susan
Moderator Comment: If Susan's post doesn't make sense now either, then it's because a spammers post was removed along with a comment about it. :)

Hi I know I am REALLY REALLY thick but cannot see how to open a new topic - have searched the page for a 'open new topic' button which I am sure is staring me in the face. Nothing on FAQ. HELp please!!!!!
-
Clare go onto the Forum page .
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php
Then look up and down at the headings and see which your request should go under.
Make sure it is a look up page you're posting on,then click onto New Topic.
That's it ,good luck
Carol
-
Thanks Carol - I tried the Waes - General - but can only see a link to unread topics etc cannot see anything that says 'create new topic'. :-( Told you I was thick but really cannot see where to post - all I can do is reply to existing topics.
-
Is it a specific county in Wales you want to post in or just Wales General?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=119.0
Scroll down a little and on the right in blue there is a button that says NEW TOPIC.
-
Thanks - got there !!!!!
-
Not sure if this should be in here or in a new topic, but . . .
For the last couple of weeks my e:mail notifications do not seem to be coming through, and when I look at New Posts only a few appear, but when I go into Unread Posts then I see several which I would expect to have been notified about.
Has something changed in the last couple of weeks, do I need to re-do something, I've checked e:mail notifications in my profile and they all seem to be in order.
Thanks for any advice.
peter

Peter,
Nothing has changed on this end, but we we will check to see if there are any email bounces from your email address.

-
Pejic, you havent just got the box ticked to notify of the first new reply have you?
-
Well I did have (just changed it), but it has always been the same and I have just checked again and there are some which should have reached me as first posts anyway.
Thanks for your concern. p.

Pejic,
Have you had a look at your 'Spam' folder to see if ther is anything in there at all?

That is where I found all mine when the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. ;D ;D
-
Yes - I am regularly checking my spam folder at present for other reasons.
Incidently (I do not know if there is any bearing) I received notifications of both Groom and Trystan messages, but no others - and there is still nothing showing in my "New replies" category even though there are messages in "Unread posts" I would have expected to be notified about - curiouser and curiouser!

Hi Peter - looking at your posts from your profile, I see the last one before this thread was in the Totally of Topic section - you don't get email notifications for those.
-
Thanks for your efforts, groom (again this notification came through), can you also see in my profile the boards I have asked to be notified about - all of which used to generate 4 or 5 notifications a day until about 2 weeks ago, when they seem to have dried up.
For instance I see there was one on the Berkshire board at 10:29 today, without any notification.

Have you actually posted on those boards or just asked for notification? If it is the latter, what happens if you post on them, do you then get notifications of later posts? I'm sure, Trystan or Sarah will get it sorted, but it is so frustrating isn't it?
-
Yes I have posted on them in the past, and until a couple of weeks ago notifications were flowing through regularly (again notification of your post arrived promptly) but not:
1043 monmouthshire
1009 dublin
0952 wales (general)
and none of these show in my "new replies" either.
But now a 1434 notification for Dumfries has arrived

Hi Folks,
I am sorry if this has already been asked but I have sent a couple of PMs but when I check messages it only ever shows my Inbox, never my Outbox. How can I see my Outbox? Or have I not sent the PMs that I thought I had?
Thanks

Go into My Messages and click on Read your Messages. Then on that page click on Preferences and then Change Settings. Then make sure that the box that says "Save a copy of each personal message in my sent items by default." is ticked.
When you want to see sent messages go to My Messages, Read Messages, Sent Items.
Someone might have a quicker way, but that works for me. ;)
-
Thanks Groom, I'll give that a try.
Cheers

Hi
new to this site and have been some help to others since finding it but can you tell me what to do if I want to put a posting on it myself as I have found it impossible Im missing something simple Im sure
regards David

At the top of this page, click on 'Forum.' From the list, choose the relevant forum, 'Beginners,' for example. Just above the list of topics is a green button labeled 'New Topic.' Click on that, then write your message in the message box and then click on 'Post.' That's it.

Also if you are stuck, this page is helpful

Apologies if this has been asked a million times, but if you PM someone, does it get forwarded to their email account? I found someone who could be related to me and would LOVE to contact her, but she hasn't logged in since 2012.
-
Hi, Yes, assuming they are still using the same email address, they will get notification of your PM
:) mare
Good Luck
-
But only if they signed up for email notification. At least one of us said, "Hell, no!"
-
And also as long as both of you have made at least 3 postings.
Far better to reply to the thread that you've found and they should be notified that there's a reply on it.
-
Thanks Erato, that's a reminder to me too, knew some didn't want email notifications for threads but I didn't apply that to PMs
Have frequently found the PM system working after only 2 postings by either party but agree with you Carol re adding to the thread, there to come across in search even if not getting email notifications
-
Not sure if this should be in here or in a new topic, but . .
Thanks for any advice.
peter
I have had same problem with not getting email notifications to threads i have recently contributed to. This has only happened for threads which have been merged or split. Even if the split has happened after my last post to the thread and that split has been made at a page before my post.
E.g new findmypast is now in three parts. I contributed early on and got email notifications of new posts OK. When It was split and part 1 locked, my latest post was then in Part 2, but I got no further emails about additional posts to part 2. The same thing happened when part 2 grew big and was split so the last couple of pages became part 3. Although my then latest post was in the new part 3 (although when I posted it was in part 2), I stopped getting emails about new posts again. And two other threads on same topic got merged into it along the way, so one email notification linked to nowhere. But for the average thread which doesn't get split, merged etc I have had no problem.
-
Lizzie,
If you'd like to be notified of the ones that don't seem to be notifying you (if they have been split), then click the "Notify" button at the top & bottom of the topic. Hopefully then, you'll get notified of new topics.
Trystan
-
Thanks, I hadn't spotted that button. As the topic in question is not just hot it's incandescent, I made more posts after splitting and the notifications came through OK again.
-
Only just started last week and had a bit of a problem in sending what I thought was a general reply but sent a personal reply instead. A great site and I have had great success in my research into my wife's family tree. The people who sent replys are the best

Great job bob in explaining. Thank you

Hi there. How and where do I find the answers to the messages, that I have asked on this board. I can see my questions but I can`t find any answers. One from Ambly for example. I can`t find his replies to my questions. What am I missing here??? J
-
Is it this one?

Click New Replies at the top of the Forum page and you should see all replies to topics you have posted in.
-
Thank you for the information, very useful indeed!
-
This is a slightly odd query, but how do I report an inappropriate personal message? There is no "report to moderator" option on PMs. I have actually deleted the message but know who it purports to come from.
Robert
-
Robert,
That's a very good question.
As Personal Messages are personal - there isn't a method as such.
You can add a person on your ignore list so you don't get any more.
You can also contact a moderator too (like me) with any details.
All the best,
Trystan
-
Thanks. The particular problem was also brought up by ChinaKay who also received a "Hello Dear" PM from *. Clearly some form of scam.
Robert
-
Robert,
I've removed your reference to the user for privacy reasons. If you contact me (or another moderator) by PM then we can look into it.
Trystan
-
This may already have been covered, but if it is then I've missed it!
I do not seem to be able to see the replies that I've sent to personal messages sent to me
I'm assuming that I should be able to see them but I need a bit of 'hand holding' to find out what to do.
Thanks & regards, Rob Davies

If you click on MY MESSAGES in the black bar at the top, then "Read Your Messages" that brings up your incoming PMs.
Then click on Messages on the left, that brings up a drop down menu. Click Sent Items and you should see all the PMs you've sent.
-
Thanks, even an old imbecile like me was able to follow those instructions.

How do I notify Rootschat that my email address has c hanged? Viktoria?
-
I think if you go to your account and put in your password at the bottom, that then allows you to change your profile and alter your details such as email address.
-
Thank you for your help and advice :-)
-
Great help. Thanks for explaining. :)
-
Thanks still getting to grips with this site but the forums are really helping
-
If I am breaking the rules please excuse me but I am no longer with talktalk yet all messages are being sent there.
How can I notify RootsChat of my new email address?
Thankyou Viktoria.
-
I think it's:
Profile
account settings
Modify profile
Change profile
From there you can change your email address. Don't forget to save it when you've finished.
-
Click on PROFILE, then on left side of page under MODIFY PROFILE click on account settings. Second option is email address- put in your new one then be sure to scroll down to bottom of that page and click on CHANGE PROFILE button :)
-
Hi, how can I get hold of moderator or admin privately? If they read this, can they reply to my log in email address, which presumable they will have. I have a query which I am reluctant to post on the forum. Many thanks in advance.
-
Welcome to Rootschat. Click on the report to moderator under your post. Or go back through this thread until you come to Trystan and send him a PM. You may have to post a couple more times here to get your PMs working, just say thanks or hallo in two posts.
-
Hello,
I have just sent you a PM.

Hi
Can somebody please advise me how do I post messages to the Forum please? Thank you, Cintombi
-
Hello Cintombi,
You just need to click on a blue button that says "New Topic" you will find the button on the right hand side of the webpage.
Regards
Sarah
-
First, click on "Forum" in the dark-brown Menu bar.
Then select the relevant forum board from the list you are presented with.
THEN you can click on "New Topic", as Sarah suggested.
-
Thank you Sarah and KGarrad for your reply and help. I think I was having a "senior-blonde" moment as I was not sure how to post a message!!..
Best wishes
Cintombi

Many thanks BB - most helpful!

I'm puzzled.
I received my first PM. My mailbox says 1 message 100% full. I can see no way to reply to the message.
Am I missing something really obvious???
--Gary
-
You need to have made 3 posts to send PM's so just reply here and it should then work.
-
I need to pm someone so I am getting it up to 3
Why don't you just reply to the thread the thread that you have seen something of interest on?
-
> you need to have made 3 posts to send PM's so just reply here and it should then work.
[2nd try, I obviously hit some keyboard combo which lost the web page I was entering the message on >:( ]
OK, many thanks for the explaination. Funny though, although I am an infrequent visitor, I would have sworn that I had already made 3 postings/replies.
BTW, is there a way to find out what postings I actually have made?
many thanks...

Click on View profile under your name, and then Show Posts.

Click on View profile under your name, and then Show Posts.
From there you can also look at the topics you've started- just click on Topics box (rather than Messages) :)
-
Thank you Bob. I am very raw, only became a member yesterday, so your hints will help me to find my way.

Welcome to RootsChat and happy hunting....your ironing will pile up, your weeds will grow and you will be able to write your name in the dust ;D You gave been warned ;D
