Title: 1841 Rochdale Lookup please
Post by: suzyf on Saturday 24 June 06 15:09 BST (UK)
I'm looking for the following families
Rochdale -Syke Area(probably part of Wardleworth )
Daniel SLADEN age 48 ,slubber or milkman
Betty (wife) age 40s +children

Possibly another Daniel Sladen household ,old enough to be father to the first.

Rydings area of Wardle (Wuerdle)
William HOWARTH,age prob 40s ,joiner
+family

Any later census sighting would be good too- I don't want to be too greedy!
Thanks

Hi

I can only find a Daniel Sladen aged 36 in 1861 in Wardleworth.
He is married to an Ellen and they have 4 children Hannah 13, Issac 12, Sarah 8 and James 1.

I think he is most likely the son of the Daniel you are looking for ..... maybe???

Hi Sue

It just gives Syke.  The previous page is Holly Green and Hazel Green, Cronkeyshaw if that's any help.  Can't see the older Daniel but will have another look.

Oh yes I see him.  Daniel Sladen 84, Farmer.  He is at Hazel Green, Cronkeyshaw along with:

Martha 40, FM
Sarah 16, Cotton Weaver
Nanny 15, Cotton Spinner
Edmund 30, Woollen Weaver
Robert 18, Woollen Labourer

All born in county.

So he is page 9 and the younger Daniel is page 10, must be very close to each other.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Sheila and Alli
I've found Syke and Hazel Grove on the 1851 ordnance Survey map .
Mary Sladen ,daughter of Daniel the slubber(does anyone know what a slubber did ?) married a John Howarth, father William the joiner from Rydings which is still rural and about a mile NE of Syke at St Chads in 1838(my ggg grandparents )
Her father Daniel Sladen b.1793,parents Daniel,b c1757and Sarah Brearley( m St Chads 17/07/1785), is the marriage to Betty in1817 and presumably  younger Daniel is her brother.
Now I need to find if Daniel 1757 is the son of Daniel or if there is a generation missing
Thanks again
Sue

This is a good site for old occupations.

http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/index.html

SLUBBER - prepares the cotton for spinning by removing the slubs.

I assume a slub is a knot or thickening of the cotton.  I remember my mother, who was a knitter, saying there was a slub in the wool if it was 'thick' in parts or it had a flaw in.

If you need any info from Rochdale Archives, try:

http://www.rochdale.gov.uk/Leisure/Attract.asp?URL=touchstones

They are extremely helpful and hold lots of records.

Hope this helps.

Hello,
Just to clarify the Wardle & Wuerdle names.  Wardle is a distinct village about two miles north east of Rochdale. Wuerdle is a vague area on the road from Rochdale to Halifax but it borders with Wardle. The name is rarely used nowadays but the two places were formerly grouped together.

Wardleworth is again a distinct area, less than a mile east of Rochdale but separate from the other places.

Holly Green and Hazel Green rang a bell!  I think if you Google for Polly Green and Hazel Grove at Syke you'll get a result; there's a photograph posted by Dr Neil Clifton which shows Hazel Grove farm at the right hand side of the picture.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. I'm now living back in Rochdale and go up Syke quite often. I never did manage to sort out the Sladens and Howarths. John Howarth lived at Rydings when he married in 1839. There is only a possible younger brother there in 1841. I have never found his father William the joiner so he could be dead ,nor John Howarth's baptism/birth around 1819 or his death in mid 1850s ( I've eliminated all the possible burials at.  St Chad's.)
If anybody reading this has any connections or suggestions please post them. Sue

For the information of anybody researching Sladens and Howarths in Rochdale I have now traced this  Sladen line back to Daniel Sladen 1704 who probably came from Littleborough.and to John Howarth born c.1740.
They always lived in the Healey Stones,Howarth Clough, Syke, Ringlows,Rydings areas and married their near neighbours. Sue

Suzyf, thanks for seeding this family question resulting in these postings.
I have one yDNA project member who probably descends from Rochdale Sladens, so anyone interested in those lines, please contact me at the e-mail addresses at Slaton DNA on Family Tree DNA (http://www.familytreedna.com/public/SSSFP_YDNA) or search the surname on the Guild of One Name Studies, I administer both projects.
We are seeking surname bearers or sponsors for them who are interested in the genetic genealogy of the Sladens (we have one result each from claimed Kent and Lancashire "branches.") All of our results on Family Tree DNA by using the link above or SEARCHing on most engines for Slaton DNA, but of course names are protected for privacy, only kit codes and claimed oldest ancestors show when provided.
Our descendant was from a man who claimed Rochdale birth in 1840 and he lived a colorful life in the American Civil War and met with Cochise, he rec'd two medical degrees (when it was not a tough as that would be now). His son became commandant of West Point Military Academy. We are hoping to find some matching patrilines outside of the U.S.
Acc to McKinley's surname series, there was a village named Sladen between Todmorden and Littleborough, and I suspect a variant Sladden is also genetically or genealogically connected, but we need yDNA to go with our paper-trails!
