Title: James Crump attorney at law Coventry
Post by: montymops on Wednesday 16 August 06 18:56 BST (UK)
James Crump was my great x3 grandfather. He lived in Swan Street Coventry around 1790 to 1820. I am trying to find his parents. He may have been born about 1770. he married Elizabeth Smith and had several children - Sarah, Elizabeth, Charles, James and Henry John. I am trying to establish a link between him and a John Crump who may have been an Attorney too, or perhaps in the silk trade. There may have been connections with the Holland family. Can anyone help? Thanks

I too have a James Crump, an attorney in Coventry.  My James Crump had two wives, the first Elizabeth (last name unknown) and children Charles, James, Elizabeth, Sarah and Henry John.  His second wife was Sarah Hanbey.  They married in 1814. They had one child Mary Anne Crump born in 1815.  She married William Smith, a famous lexicographer.  William Smith's mother was Maria Holland, daughter of Joseph Holland and Elizabeth Burbery.  After the death of her husband William Smith Senior, Maria Holland married John Crump.  They had 4 sons one of whom was my great great grandfather.  I have also tried to link James and John but I have not been able to.  I think it is obvious that they are probably brothers or cousins, possibly even uncle and nephew.  John Crump was born about 1789 but I do not have a birth date for James.  I hope this isn't too confusing.  Let me know if you think they are the same people.

Hi Judy,
I think we have been in touch before! It is certainly the same family. I am descended from James Crump and his first wife Elizabeth Smith. Their son, Rev. Henry John Crump was my gr.gr.grandfather.
Elizabeth died in 1812 and James married a widow, Sarah Hanby. They had a daughter Mary Anne who as you say, married William Smith. I have been in touch with some of their descendents - through their son Herbert Henry, who was their youngest son I believe.
My search is for where James Crump (attorney in Coventry) and HIS brother John Crump (also an attorney in Coventry) actually came from! James was born in 1769/70 - I have his death certificate in 1839 which states he was 70 yrs old - this could be approximate, of course. His brother, John who married an Ann White, died in the early 1800's. I have a copy of his will. Ann died shortly after, leaving everything to her 'brother by law'(sic) James Crump, attorney in Coventry. Therefore, it seems very probable that James and John were brothers working in the same profession in Coventry, but where were they born?
IGI has records of 2 James and John Crumps who were born to the same parents - if I recall correctly one set were in Bromsgrove and another in Worcestershire. But I have no idea how to set about finding out which is which! I think at some point I will have to go to Coventry to see if I can discover anything more.  It just seems unlikely that in view of their professions that I should be unable to find out more about their Crump roots! Was their father also a lawyer, for instance?
Anyway, good to hear from you - happy hunting! I think our relatives by marriage were both at Mill Hill School at some point - Richard Law Crump? and his brother? Henry John Crump was the chaplain there in the 1830's so his children were at school there, including my gr. grandfather Arthur although he was very young and may have only just lived there while his older brothers were at the school. I have a copy of the school lists at that time.
Kind regards
Cilla Alexander

Hi
Obviously I'm not one of them but looking at your William Henry Crump it looks like he was born 17.5.1900 s of William Henry Crump and Gertrude Anne a Toolmaker born 1877 and 1879 Coventry.

William Henry Crump born 1877 son of William Henry Crump and Elizabeth cycle fitter born 1851 Birmingham and 1848 Ryton

William Henry Crump bapt  7.7.1850 Birmingham St Thomas  s of William (born London Surrey 1823) and Sarah  nee Bishop born 1827 Herefordshire  coach builder  Gough St married Kings Norton 1848.

The couple are together on the 1851 census as William and Laura but William dies 1851-1861 (Sep 1860 age 38) and Sarah is on the other censuses as Sarah with her children.
That marriage cert in Kings Norton June 1848 should crack it.

I'd guess his parents were William and Elizabeth Rotherhithe born 10.5.1821 /bapt 3rd May dyer Clarks Orchard.Parents are both 50 on the 1841 census born Surrey.(1792 and 93 Wandsworth 1851)
Possible for William (nearest I can see) Rotherhithe bapt  6.7.1788 s of James and Ann age 31 days.

I don't see the link but I may of course be very wrong .
