Title: Maggie Robertson
Post by: charmedc on Tuesday 19 September 06 10:28 BST (UK)
This might sound really silly to all of you that are quiet conversant with locating ancestors - but i am really stuck with a Maggie Robertson (my grandmother). I was unable to locate her marriage certificate and a kind gentleman looked it up for me at the registry in Edinburgh and gave me my great grandfather and his wife's name. Now my problem is - the information he gave me is "Maggie (yes the name appeared as Maggie on the certificate. Probably why it didn't turn up when you searched) Robertson (jute mill worker) age 21 daughter of John Robertson, (Tailor) and Catherine Brown

on 28th December 1901 in St. Margarets Church, Lochee."
now i still couldnt find it on scotspeople and the REAL problem is that when i found Catherine Brown and John Robertson's marriage certificate 1886 it says he was a widower. Now my calculations say that his first wife is Maggie/Margaret's mum. Now I have spent a lot of money on scotspeople trying to find her BUT there are so many Maggie Robertson's with a dad of John Robertson....... any suggestions as to how i can narrow this search down as to the correct one?
all suggestions i would really appreciate - as I am stuck!
thanks heaps everyone
regards
Jacki

Jackie

Have you found Maggie's father, John Robertson's death cert. In many cases, it will state details of first marriages, ie married to 1st xxx, 2nd xxx?

Got the family now in 1881 and 1891.

Starting with the 1891 entry in Dundee, after John and Catherine's marriage in 1886:

ROBERTSON John, 44, tailor, b. Forgue Aberdeenshire
ROBERTSON Catherine, 32, b. xxx (spl) Aberdeenshire
ROBERTSON Mary, 15, mill worker, b. Strichen Aberdeenshire
ROBERTSON Bella, 13, b. Strichen Aberdeenshire
ROBERTSON Maggie, 11, b. Strichen Aberdeenshire
ROBERTSON Kate, 2, b. Aberdeen
ROBERTSON Tina, 5mths. b. Dundee

Now, with the additional childrens' names, the family with Maggie's mother in 1881:

ROBERTSON John, 35, Photographic Artist, b. Forgue
ROBERTSON Mary, 33, b. Ellon
ROBERTSON John, 10 b. Peterhead
ROBERTSON Alexander, 8, b. Strichen
ROBERTSON Mary, 5, b. Strichen
ROBERTSON Isabella, 4, b. Strichen
ROBERTSON Maggie, 2, b. Strichen
ROBERTSON Ann, 11 mths b. Banchory Devenich, Kincardine

Census in Banchory Dvk, Kincardine

This is John and Mary GREIG's marriage from IGI:

JOHN ROBERTSON  Marriages: Spouse: MARY GREIG
Marriage:  25 AUG 1865   Ellon, Aberdeen, Scotland

Mary GREIG died in 1882 at the age of 33 due to heart problems in Old Marchar, Aberdeen. Husband John (still a photographer!) reported the death. Father James Greig and mother Agnes (can't make out maiden name) both deceased.

I've also checked births for the three girls born in Strichen and they all match the details we have, John Robertson Photographer and Mary Greig married in 1865, as shown above.

1. Mary Agnes Robertson b. 1876 in Strichen (Agnes the name of Mary's mother)
2. Isabella Pirie Robertson b. 1877 in Strichen
3. Maggie Jane Cruickshank Robertson b. 1879 in Strichen (in his 1886 marriage cert. John's mother is Jane Cruickshank).

So that's it, it all fits...........except for one thing, why did John change from photographer to tailor...........no idea!

Regards.

Mary's mother Agnes's surname looks to be Massie. From IGI, this looks like Mary's birth entry together with her siblings:

1. MARY GREIG  Birth: 25 APR 1847 Christening: 08 MAY 1847 Ellon, Aberdeen, Scotland
2. MARGARET GREIG Birth: 28 AUG 1840 Christening: 15 SEP 1840 Ellon, Aberdeen, Scotland
3. ALEXANDER GREIG Birth: 17 JAN 1845 Christening: 04 FEB 1845 Ellon, Aberdeen, Scotland
4. WILLIAM GREIG Birth: 30 SEP 1848 Christening: 15 OCT 1848 Ellon, Aberdeen, Scotland
5. AGNES ALEXANDER GREIG  Birth: 13 MAR 1838 Christening: 27 MAR 1838 Ellon, Aberdeen, Scotland
6. JAMES GREIG Birth: 07 FEB 1843 Christening: 20 FEB 1843 Ellon, Aberdeen, Scotland
7. CHARLES BREWSTER GREIG Birth: 23 APR 1855 Ellon, Aberdeen, Scotland

Also from IGI, this looks to be her parents' marriage details. Banns look to have been read in two places:

JAMES GREIG  Marriages: Spouse:  AGNES MASSIE
Marriage: 09 DEC 1837  Slains, Aberdeen, Scotland/ 1837 Ellon, Aberdeen, Scotland

You have an 1855 birth cert in the list above, for Charles no.7. 1855, the first year of official registration in Scotland, provided a wealth of additional info on the BMDs. For one year only, the entries ran over two pages of the register and included much more info on the parents for birth certs. Worth having a look at!

Regards.
