Having just spent the last 2 days in London , tracing addresses relating to my ancestors, some of the actual buildings have now been demolished whislt the streets still remain!
Is there any way I can trace a picture of Enfield Buildings, Aske Street in 1881-1900? I have found the street today but the buildings there seem more like 1930s- can anyone help?
I had the same problem with 5-9 Brunswick Place, Shoreditch - found the address but now it is a large office.
Any ideas??

Hello, Caroline,
A lot of buildings in this area were destroyed in the Blitz & rebuilt so try the Metropolitan Archives, they have a large collection of photos & will do copies, for a fee. The Guildhall Library also have a photo collection for the City of London.

Hi - no I am afraid I have not had any success in finding pictures of Enfield buildings- although I did visit Aske Street a few years ago!
What was the name of your family living there? I have the following:
1881- 43 Enfield Buildings- James Day(Age41) and his sone James W Day (Age 17)
1891- 53 Enfield Buildings
James W Day (age 27), Agnes Day (Age 26), Agnes Ada Day (Age 1); John atkins (Age 73)
1901 - 15 Enfield Buldings
James W Day (37); Agnes Day (36); Agnes ada Day (110; Olive T day (9); ivy C Day (7); Elsie Day (5); William J Day (Aged 2)
By 1911 this family had moved to 52 Colimbia Road Bethnal Green.
I would love to hear from you as it would be great if the families knew each other!
James Day was a coachsmith by trade and his father in law (John Atkins- with them in 1891) had his own cigar making business before retiring.

Enfield Building is now know as Enfield Cloisters.....my wife and I werethere recently when a couple were investigating their earlier family and we were able to show them into the courtyards.
At the front is on the very top of the building is the date of completion plus the name Enfield Buildind!!
The post code is N1 6LD...find the Lion and Lamb pub and you will then see Enfield Building/ Cloisters

Hopefully this will of assistance to you....another couple were on a similar mission as you appear to have been........find the Lion and Lamb pub and you are within 50 yards of the building!!!!

I lived there in 1978-89. I can send photos if you like.
Local people still disapproved then of its transformation from Enfield Buildings to Enfield Cloisters.

How do I post photos in here? I've tried clicking attachments.
My photos were taken in 2008, of course you can look up Google Street View, but you can only see a bit from the street.

You can't post photos on the completed or look-up request boards.
I can move the topic for you so you can post them or you can exchange email addresses with queenswood and send them off-forum

Of course there are plenty of more recent photos on estate agents websites if you look up flats for sale or to rent.
But I don't have photos of the place as it was before it got "gentrified" from Buildings to Cloisters.
