Title: Alice MELLINGS - Newport.
Post by: eyelander on Tuesday 09 January 07 14:07 GMT (UK)
I´m from Finland but my grandmother Alice Mellings from my mothers side was from The Villa, Chetwynd End. Newport. SA.
Alice Mellings married my grandfather Erik Ruben Karlsson the 11 Sept. 1943 in the district of Wellington in the County of Salop. My Mother Patricia was born the sixth April 1944 in Shrewsbury. They moved to Finland in 46 or 47. Alice Mellings died in Oct 48. Her fathers name was John Charles Mellings and he was a Farm worker.

We have never had any contact from any relatives in England and the most intersting thing to know would be is to know if Alice Mellings had any Sisters or Brothers.

I do not know where i would get this information or if anybody here could help me?

Thank You!
Marcus.

OK, now lets see where this chap was on the 1901 and work back ... BUT, it will be necessary to get those Certs to verify this and further research.

If you need help just shout !

Hi both  :)

Welcome to RootsChat Marcus  :D

(can I jump in, Newfy?)

If the John Charles marriage is the right one, then according to Staffordshire BMD, the bride was Emma Elizabeth BENNETT and the wedding was at Seighford St Chad

Hi Tati - most welcome, I always forget about LRO transcriptions.

I only ever think of Staffs and West Mids because that's where my own lot are from   :D

Can you see John Charles anywhere on census, Newfy ???  ???

If the MarchJune 1908 Stafford birth is the right Alice, then this might be possible siblings:
John William Mellings Sep 1904 Stafford 6 b 12
Louisa Mellings June 1906  Stafford  6b 6

The problem being, Marcus, that the latest available census is 1901 - before Alice's birth - therefore we couldn't prove that they belong to the same family :-\

Post by: Necromancer on Tuesday 09 January 07 14:41 GMT (UK)
hmmm, the name is predominantly from Lancashire .... none are in Staffs in early 1901 with that exact spelling ... there is an interesting chap in Salop, b1878 Wales tho ....

I think that to continue is guesswork without verifying that marriage and birth ....

I will look at the full Birth Index to see if there are other Alice born 1907 +/-  ..... it may be just a coincidence that a John Charles M marries a few years before her birth in the same county ...

Tati - the Alice I found was 1907, Stoke .... in FreeBMD, is yours from the full index then - will save me looking !

Post by: Tati on Tuesday 09 January 07 14:44 GMT (UK)
Oops - I saw that the marriage was registered in Stafford therefore I checked Stafford registration district births and found
Alice Mellings - June 1908 Stafford 6b 12
(from FreeBMD)

Hmmmmm...

Post by: Necromancer on Tuesday 09 January 07 14:48 GMT (UK)
No worries - its a better fit .... thought I had searched +/-2 years but obviously I had just 1907.

I think its guesswork to try and go further. So on the assumption we have the right Alice ...

1. Need to verify from Alice B-cert that the John we see marrying in 1901 is her father.

2. Need to find from 1901 M-Cert who John C's father was ...

Yes and thank you both for the search!!

This is very interessting.

The only paper I´ve got is a copy of the Marrige paper between Alice and Ruben, the Birth cert of my mother and a change of adress paper that Alice never sent.

I am going to to visit London and take a trip to Newport in april with my mother who has not been to great britain since she left with her mother 1946 or 47. I wanted to check before if there was any related people for us to contact and maybe visit.

Marcus

I guess Seighford must be right on the Salop / Staffs border ? Not my neck of the woods, but it might explain why we dont see John in Staffs ....

Hi again!

I have got the birth-cert now and Alice is born the 11 april 1908. Burley Fields. Castle Church. R. D.

It´s very strange since the registration in Finland say 16 april 1907 AND the tombstone say 14 april 1907!!!!!!

Well, there is no one to ask about this anymore but it is strange.

But I do belive this cert is the right one. Her father was John Charles Mellings and a agricultural labourer as the M-cert said he was (Farm Worker).  The mother was Emma Elizabeth Mellings formerly Bennet.

Newfy if you are there? I tried to order the M-cert for John Charles and Emma but they need a date for that so I dont know what to do next.

Hi Marcus  :)

Aren't they confusing us  :P

You don't need a date to order the marriage cert  ???

The reference Newfy gave you is perfectly enough to order the cert ...

Hi Tati and thanx!

You are right I didnt have to fill in the date. I can see that now  :-\

Post by: eyelander on Sunday 25 February 07 20:21 GMT (UK)
Finally got the M-cert on John Charles Mellings (29 y labourer) and Emma Elizabeth Bennett (21 y Servant)!

They married in December 25th 1901 at St Chads Church in the parish of Seighford in the county of Stafford.

Both their residence at the time of marriage was Creeswell (Should that be creswell?).

Johns father had the same name as him, John Charles Mellings and a Labourer.

Emmas father was Thomas Bennett and also a Labourer.

Is there any chance to find any related people today on this information?

Tia

And now I found out I could search in Ancestry.co.uk :P

I found out that Alice mother Emma Elizabeth Mellings died 1910.

I didn´t know how to search for another child than Alice for Emma and John Charles  ???

But John Charles remarried with Rose H Morgan in 1912.

How can I see if they had any children?

Hope for help.
Marcus

Hi Marcus  :)

You can search for children named Mellings with mother's maiden name Morgan

Right  :D Most of the time it works, but sometimes it doesn't. In which case the easiest way to access the data is to search for a name that is close (for instance try Kas or Kal or whatever) and, if necessary, trawl a page forwards or backwards from there.

Well now I have another question here  :)

I found a boy born in 1910 that is Alice brother. His name is Fred.

Name: Fred Mellings
Year of Registration: 1910
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Atcham
County: Montgomeryshire, Shropshire
Volume: 6a
Page: 567

There is no record of him beeing married or dead.
Is that because he has moved to another country or something? (he could be 97 years but...).

If he had any children it would be nice to know because they would probably still be alive but I can´t find anyway to go from here...

Hello Marcus,

My name is Christy and my husband is Kelly Mellings.

I was searching for geneology information for his father Michael (Mick) Anthony Mellings.

We are in Alberta, Canada but Mick grew up in the Shropshire area and his Aunt was Alice Mellings. His mother Edith Mary Smout married John Williams Mellings.
Mick even says he has a baby photo of Patricia.

I do hope you still subscribe to this site. If so do contact me!

re: "John's father had the same name as him, John Charles Mellings and a Labourer."

re this: John Charles Mellings' father was a John William Mellings, his father a John Charles and his father a John William etc. I also found a John Mellings born in Shrewsbury in 1871.

Apparently the last John is John William Gordon Mellings who currently lives in Halfway House. He has a daughter in her mid 20's.

He is my husbands' Uncle.

Hi Christy, I'm glad you found this old thread!

I just talked to mom Patricia who had to sit down when she heard about her relatives i Canada.

If I understand everything correct Mick is her first cousin and Me and my sister Liz is Kellys second cousins right?

We are happy to help you with your search from us your Åland Islands relatives and I'm sure mom has a million questions for you and she was really interested in that photo of her as she doesn't have much of that if any from being a baby.

Kind regards
Marcus Boman
