Hello Chorlton,

Griffith's Valuation of Ireland lists families bearing the Whitely surname in the following counties ... Cavan, Cork, Fermanagh and Tyrone between 1848-64.

Thanks for that info Christopher.

I think my lot, who are my Grandmothers family on my mums side,  are Yorkshire through and through, at least back to 1744, as far as I can tell.

I "think" the family now goes back to:
Edward Whitley & Sara Hill, who married on 28 Aug 1769 in Halifax, Yorkshire.

They had James Whitley in 1772 and he married Sarah Lee on 13 Feb 1797 in Halifax, Yorkshire.

They in turn had James Whitley in 1802, and he married Susannah Greenwood on 21 Sept 1820 in Halifax, Yorkshire.

James & Susannah being the parents to William Whitley in 1829, who is shown at the start of my first post.

William Whitley and Harriet Sharp married in 1851, again in Halifax.

Hello Chorlton. My Whitleys were also from Yorkshire  and I wondered if you have any connection to them. Miracles do happen! I have William Whitley  married to Isabella Mills 1804 at Rochdale Lanc., with the following brood:-  Giles 1804, Luke 1806, Ellen 1808, Ruth 1810 and Nathan 1808. All this brood were born  in Wakefield and were baptised at the Zion Independent. Ellen was my g.g.grandmother who married James Holt.
Regards Joan.

Hi Joan

Sorry, but I don't see any of your names in my lists.

The only forenames that are in yours and mine; are William & Ellen, but William was b1829, and is the father to Ellen born 1857.

From what I can see, they didn't seem to stray far from Northowram, Halifax, Yorkshire.

Hello Barbara
My g.g.grandmother Ellen Whitley was born  C1808. She married in Lancashire to James Holt. It hadn't occurred to me that the Whitleys could have come across from Ireland. I have found a birth  record  in Yorkshire for an Ellen Whiteley which fits but isn't conclusive of course.
Thank you for your message. I will look into the Irish possibility!
Regards
Joan.

I'm desperatley trying to find the birth details and parents of Theodacia Whiteley born c 1798 in either Mellor, Derbyshire or in Cheshire - different details given on different census returns!

She married a Silas Washington in 1820 at the Methodist Chapel in Bullock Smithy.

Anyone got her amongst their brood at all?

Amongst your Whiteleys, is there a connection to Bolton area Isherwoods? I have a William Isherwood with a middle name of Whiteley, (presumably pre middle of 19th C connection from birthdate), and one or two Halifax area births?

I have no information about your Whiteleys at Bolton in my research. There could be a connection but I am unaware of it. The trouble is that the spelling varies .
Seasons greetings
Joan.

Thank you, Michael Baldock, I'd actually seen that IGI entry, but the use of Whiteley as a middle name with the surname Isherwood predates that date, in my line. Thanks a lot, though, for kindly taking the trouble to help.

Hiya, I have a photo of a woman called Ada Whitley who was cousin to Elizabeth Anne Broadbent, the latter was my mum's great aunt.My mum's family lived in Diggle.  I'm wondering if the Ada is the Ada you mention born in 1899. My mum's great aunt was still alive in the 1920's so it might fit.
