Title: Irish roots dilemna & Weir family in 1871
Post by: Ruskie on Saturday 24 February 07 04:02 GMT (UK)
I would be grateful for some suggestions as to how to progress with this family please.

Mary Weir age 25 b Ireland, married Peter Lamont age 20 in Anwoth in 1858. She gave her address as Woodend, Anwoth.

In the 1861 census I have them in Anwoth:
Peter Lamont (age 20) bc 1841
Mary wife (age 28) bc 1833 Ireland
Thomas 2
William 8mo
Thomas Weir age 19 bc 1842 b Buittle Kirkcudbright brother in law
(I have Peter, Mary and their family in all other census).

In the 1851 I have Mary Weir b Sligo Ireland as a servant in Colvend.

In the 1851 I have at Lodge in Wood number 4, Colvend:
Thomas Wear 40 be Sligo Ireland, carter
Bridget Wear wife age 34 b Sligo
Bridget 16 b Anwoth lab in wood
Isabella 14, b Sligo lab in wood
Catharine age 12 b Buittle lab in wood
Thomas 10 b Buittle scholar
Margaret 8 b Anwoth

In the 1841 transcribed as Wier:
at Palnackie on the estate of Amorness (fantastic address!), Kircudbright (along with several other families)
Thomas b 1811 Ireland
Bridget b 1816 Ireland
Mary b 1833 Ireland (the Mary Lamont in 1861)
Bridget b 1835 Kircudbright
Isabella b 1837 Kircudbright
Rallmine?(I suspect this is Catharine b 1839 in the 1851 census above)

1861
Woodend Anwoth Kircudbright
Thomas Weir 48 ag lab b Ireland
Bridget 46 b Ireland
Agnes b Urr Kircudbright

Now for my questions:

On her marriage cert Mary names her mother as Elizabeth Green (?). I suppose it is possible that Thomas Weir and Elizabeth Green(?) had Mary in Sligo Ireland, then Elizabeth died. Thomas married Bridget soon after Mary's birth in 1833, then the family moved to Scotland where next daughter Bridget was born in 1835. Fast worker young Thomas! How on earth can I look for a death for Elizabeth in Ireland? Does anyone know of any good resources for Irish who went to Scotland? (I realise this was common).

I am unable to find Thomas and Bridget or Agnes in the 1871 census. I did find one Bridget living in Berwick and a Thomas, hawker of drapery, with wife Margaret and living in Ayr. I don't think these are my people.

Can anyone who is a good looker upper see any likely candidates in the 1871? I have some SP credits and just really need pointing in the right direction. I can't find any obvious deaths for Bridget or Thomas snr (common name problem with this), certainly not in Kircudbright.

Unfortunately with so many girls in the family it will be difficult to trace the rest of them (and this is something I may try to do at a later date).

Looking at the dates and places of birth of the children, it looks like this family moved from Ireland to Scotland to Ireland to Scotland. I also think that there could have been some confusion when listing places of birth and Isabella's was entered incorrectly as Sligo.

Is this the same family that I am following through the census? Or have I gone off track?

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to get everything in. I hope it's not too confusing!

I'd love some suggestions as to where to go next. Many thanks.

Hi Ruskie  :)

To put you out of your misery, I've looked up Mary's death record. She died, aged 82,  on 7th April 1916 at Boatgreen, Gatehouse. Married to Peter Lamont, agricultural labourer.

Parents - Thomas Weir, labourer, deceased and Bridget, maiden surname Green, deceased.

Somewhere I remember reading that Bridget and Elizabeth were occasionally interchangeable - I can't remember where but I hope this solves your problem.

Cheers

Gadget

PS - It looks very much like the same family through the censuses to me  :)

Ruskie  :)

I've found a very interesting death entry on SP

1893 Bridget Weir, other surname Green, aged 83 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire. Ref -  795 Page 3

Unfortunately there isn't an image and you will have to order, but definitely worth a look  :)

I'll cast my eye around for Thomas, etc.

Very interesting - on the 1891 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburgh

795 ED 2 Page 8

Thomas N Weir, boarder, unm, 23, sawmiller, b. Kirkcudbrightshire, Gatehouse  :)

Boarding in the house of a William Reid.

No sign of any other Weir's in the area but could this Thomas be the grandson of Thomas and Bridget?

Worth some explorations  :D

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

1891 - Berwickshire, Earlston, Fourloanend  REf - 736 ED 2 page 4

Thomas Weir, 84, formerly carter, b. Ireland, Sligo
Bridget, 81, b. Ireland, Sligo

previous household - also fourloanend:

Mary Weir, wid, 46, farm servant, b. Gatehouse of Fleet
Margaret L, d, 18, housekeeper, b. Roxburgh, Boswell
Peter, s, 17, farm servant, b. Perthshire, Comrie
James,s, 14, farm servant,  b. Perthshire, Comrie
Gregor, s, 12, scholar, b. Perthshire, Comrie
Jessie, d, 10, scholar, b. Perthshire, Comrie
John,s, 8, b. Berwickshire, ?
Devina, d, 6, scholar, b. Berwickshire, ?

I think that Perthsire/Berwickshire is where you might look for them in the 1871 and 1881  :)

The Berwickshire death that you found for Thomas Weir is correct - 19 Jan 1892, Earlston, Berwick, aged 85, wood carter, married to Bridget Green, pauper. Parents - Thomas Weir, farmer (dec) and Isabella, m.s. Dow (dec). Informant - H Reid, son in law.

Think you can take it from there, Ruskie  :D

W O W !!!! You are THE BEST Gadget!

Thanks SO much for all that - it is a very pleasant unexpected surprise.

When I discovered that Elizabeth Weir was born in Ireland, my heart sank and I thought I'd never find out any more about this family.

Then when I found a possible Weir family in Kircudbright I got so excited that I thought I might be TRYING to make them fit. Hence my post. I didn't really expect any replies - especially since it's such a scroller!

Elizabeth = Bridget ... well you learn something new every day. That is something I never would have guessed!

This is wonderful! I'm off to check names and places!

A million thanks! I really appreciate it!

Thanks for that Monica - I have added it to my favourites. I notice that on the sites home page they mention Elizabeth and Isobel being interchangable too!

I'm grateful that Gadget pointed out that Elizabeth/Bridget are one and the same. I would have been tearing my hair out looking for a second marriage and a death!

Strange you should talk about names .... I've been doing some thinking and googling and it seems that Weir is Scottish surname, as is Dow, and Green is English. I also see the name Isabella as being very Scottish (although I know there are regional variations and it is used elsewhere). I am wondering if, although many of members of this family are born in Ireland, the families were not originally of Scottish origin.

I think I will have to do some more research about migration between Ireland and Scotland. If anyone has any sites they could recommend I would be grateful.
