Painter in Ruspidge 1850 +
Davies in Coleford 1900 +
Hi
I have just joined rootschat and have only just started researching my ancestors but here is what I have so far of Painters in Ruspidge. In 1871 census Henry Painter b.1834 Miserdine Glos married to Eliza ? b.1831 Painswick Glos lived in Ruspidge working as a miner. Lodging with him were 3 nephews Jesse b.1847 Miserdine, Joseph b.1845 Painswick and Henry b.1851 Misedine. By 1881 Jesse and Henry had moved on but Joseph married local girl Charlotte ? and had fathered James b.1871 and Edwin b.1874 .
Thanks
David Painter
-
I am hoping that you are connected to Joseph and Charlotte because my husband is descended from their son Edwin who had 11, or possibly 12 children. almost in age order I think Joe, Edith, Bessie, Annie Beatrice, Doris, May, Eva, Elsie, Bill, Peggy, possibly Jack and one other whose name is forgotten at the moment.
Charlotte's maiden name was SIMMONS (spelling variable) and she was born in Ruspidge in September 17th 1850 and died November 11th 1928 in Porth Glamorgan. Children that we know are Edwin born may 24th 1873, and William Henry born ?
My Husband is descended from Annie Beatrice PAINTER who married Frederick Charles Davies.

Hi, I'm new to Roots Chat and I'm already hooked!
I am tracing my Maternal line at the moment (as it's the easiest!) and have recently traced one of my ancestors back to Gloucester, namely, William TINGLE born c1828, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. William married Camella Greaves of Broughton, Leics, and by the time their first son, William, was born in 1858 they were living in Knutton, Staffs. Would love to hear from anyone who recognises any of these names! or could give me some advice on genealogy in Gloucester! Cheers Jax

I'm looking for BARRINGTONs in Bristol. That's my mother's maiden name. My g-grandfather was Frank William Barrington, born June 1881 and married to Mary Lamb in 1905. His father was William George Barrington, born June 1853 and married to Caroline Westerman in 1876. His father was also called William George Barrington and he was married to Elizabeth Flynn... when, I don't know. Of course, I'm also interested in the Lambs, Westermans and Flynns. I don't expect much joy here with the g-grandparents, as they lived and died in the London area, but the others are all very much Bristol and I believe the family roots go deep into Gloucester and Somerset. Needless to say, any help would be greatly appreciated and I have much to share in return, so please get in touch if any of these names ring any bells.
Thank you for taking the time to read and all the best with your own family research.

Hi bwgan,
Which Smiths in West Dean? I've got a Joseph Smith (b.1826 West Dean) and his parents, Thomas (b.1783 Lydney) and Elizabeth (b.1785 Hereford Norton).
If it's the same line, can you go further back?
-
Hi theevath
Can't see an immediate connection. The furthest I have gone back is Benjamin Smith born c.1806 - camomile Green. ???
He was married to Maria, born c. 1816 and they had three children that I know of;
Alfred born c. 1837
Benjamin born c. 1839
John born c. 1843.
All born Lydbrook. :o
I have only gone back as far as the 1841 census at present, and am nowhere near looking at parish records etc on this line. Added to which geography is definately not a strong point, s I don't know how far apart these areas are. But if I find anything I will be sure to let you know. ;D :D
Regards and thanks

Hi,
I'm looking for HERBERT pre 1800. John Herbert m. Ann Hyatt/Hyett/Hyott cir.1771 in Cirencester. Their children were Thomas, William and Susanna.
My direct ancester was Thomas Herbert (well at least I think he is the same one as his children had the same names as his brother and sister with Hyatt as a middle name) who turned up in Seaford, Sussex sometime end of 1700's (he was a sailor).
If anyone can help with the possible connection it would be appreciated.
Ann :)

I have a feeling that this type of Board would be more productive if the results were transferred to some sort of database - not necessarily searchable but in alphabetic order.
I see quite a few Shepherds, Bullocks, Smiths and Pearces here but I doubt if at the moment the possibilities of connections are good. 8)
-
I agree with Hackstaple, The layout of this forum makes searching big lists somewhat difficult. An alphabetic list of names with birth dates, and then a form of contact to the owner of the name/tree/enquiry would be teriffic.

What we need is a mini-Surname Interest Table ~ where is Bob when you need him?
Maybe if we ask him very nicely...
Meanwhile, there is the SIT in place to keep us going!

I have spoken to Bob and he is agreeable in principle and time permitting (but especially time permitting!) to trying to make us a database.
What do we think we would want it to do?
Will post, as Bob suggested, on the SIT board and see what the consensus is.

HATHAWAY, Nicholas (b. 1595 Gloucestershire, d. ? [some sources state 1705, but that would make him 105!] whereabouts unknown).
Nicholas is the progenitor of the largest HATHAWAY line in the States. The Hathaway Family Association does not feel there is proof enough to prove his ancestry, while others think they can take him back several more generations.
I would appreciate any information on Nicholas HATHAWAY of Gloucestershire.
Thanks.

For Rebecca, reply No. 36
My name is Tony Drew and my wife was a "Knee" before our marriage. She is a direct descendant of Daniel Knee of Stroud, a widower who married Elizabeth Wicks on 2.2.1805 - he was believed to be in his fifties then because burial records show a Daniel aged 69 interred on 2.11.1819.
There were 4 children of the marriage, Mary (1805), Martha (1807), Daniel (1810) and George (1812). Martha and George are believed to have died early - Martha (1809) and George (1813).
Daniel was convicted at Gloucester Assizes in 1826 and transported to Australia for life, where he raised a family with Mary Ann Mantle (nee Hulks) a widow - and theire are numerous Knees now around the Newcastle, Maitland area of NSW.
If this is of interest let me know.

Hi, I'm trying to find out more about the Capel family in Prestbury, Glos. pre 1800 or so.
-
Hi Metalchicken
There is a living Capel family in my village, which is only a mile away from Prestbury. They are the only Capel family around here I think. Ever thought of contacting them.
Are you local or searching from far. What have you found already ?
There are also some Capel families in Winchcombe, which is up the hill from Prestbury.
Sandie
-
Hi Sandie
I'm guessing really, about the Capels. All I have is a Mr M - possibly Mr Martyn - who visits his maternal uncles grave in Prestbury churchyard in 1801. He writes that 'my uncles Monument ... is still in good repair altho he was buried in the year 1767 and nothing has been done to it since', and that he was 'treading on the Ashes of numerous friends and relatives ... as the whole of my mothers family except herself lie there entombed'. One of the few 'numerous' families in Prestbury in the mid-1700's would seem to have been the Capels so I thought it was worth pursuing. I hadn't realised Winchcombe was so close - there were quite a few Capels there in the 1700's as well. I'm near Chester so I'm trying to achieve as much as possible from afar before making a trip to the GRO and Prestbury churchyard, although it seems unlikely that a monument from 1767 will still be standing, let alone legible.
Thanks for the info.
Annie
-
Hi Annie
All you have to do is contact the vicar of the church and ask them to lookin the register for any Capel graves.
If I have a spare moment I will have a trawl around the Churchyard and see what I can find. Not this weekend though, I have to haunt another churchyard.
A lot of my family are buried in Prestbury also and the Vicar gace me a list of all the Newmans buried there. He was happy to do so.
I would also stick a posting on the prestbury parish website letting others know you are searching the name Capel.
I have had a look in the telephone book again for this area, there are in fact two Capel families and two Capell families. I would definately start by contacting them.
I will send the contact details through a private message.
Sandie
-
Thanks Sandie, that's fantastic
I'll try the vicar asap. I wasn't sure if records from the 1700's would be held at St. Mary's, I thought they'd probably be in the GRO. Of course I could be wrong, I might not be looking for a Capel at all. Still, there can't have been that many male burials in Prestbury in 1767 - the list of possible names shouldn't be too long - she says hopefully.
Annie :)

I'm researching TIMBRELL (also TIMBREL, TIMBRILL) in Winchcombe (18th century) with earlier - 17th century - generations in Sevenhampton and Longborough.
Anna
Hi Anna
This may be totally unconnected, but I have been trying to establish the relationship between a Sarah Timbrell and an E (I think) Timbrell and a John Hughes. I believe John Hughes had family in Winchcombe but he had lived in London and was living in Cheltenham when the Timbrells witnessed his will in 1766. A third witness was a John Jaffris. Have any of these names cropped up in you research?
Annie
-
Annie, there is definitely a Hughes-Timbrell connection in Winchcombe, though I didn't know of it as early as 1766. My ancestor John Timbrell b Winchcombe 1762 had a sister Sarah Timbrell b 1754. This Sarah married a John Hughes at Winchcombe in 1773 and they had at least 13 children together. I know nothing more about this John Hughes except that he was still fathering children in 1796.
I'm intrigued by the details you give. The Sarah Timbrell I mentioned had an aunt Sarah Timbrell b. Winchcombe 1734 and a grandmother Sarah Timbrell (maiden name unknown) who would have been born about 1700 and lived in Winchcombe.
I don't have any male E. Timbrells, but there is an Elizabeth in the tree and a couple of Hesters who might have been Esthers.
John Jaffris doesn't mean anything to me at this point.
Hmmm... I'd love to know more. Is this will one of the National Archives ones?
Best wishes
Anna

PARKER
I am looking for William Parker, b 1819, Camden, Gloucestershire. He was married (possibly 1843) to Mary (possibly Harris) b1820 in Mickleton. They were my GG grandparents.
They lived for a while in Mickleton where their 7 children were born. The youngest was my G grandmother Anna, b 1863.
They later lived in Broadway.
I can find them in censuses back to 1861, but am having trouble before that. Their 3 oldest children, Elizabeth, William & Alice were all born before 1851 so I would have expected to see them somewhere.
I'm keeping on looking at censuses, trying different spellings incase the transcriptions are wrong.
Any suggestions?

Hi Illumina.
Just read your old post about Haslum families in Winchcombe and surrounding areas.
There are a three Haslum's in the telephone book for nearby areas,
Walton Cardiff, Alderton and Cheltenham. All only a few miles from Winchcombe.
There are also Haslams as well, again all nearby.
There are none that I can see in Winchcombe itself though.
If you want the contacts to ring or write to, let me know and I will send them to you through a private message.

I am researching the following families on behalf of myself and some American cousins.
All come from the Eastington/Frocester/Leonard Stanley area
Derrick - earliest record so far is George born 1773 married Mary Gregory
Gwinnell - also spelt Gwynnell - earliest so far is Joseph circa 1750's and wife Mary Browning circa 1867
Browning - with connection to the Derrick and Gwinnell families - 1750 onwards
It appears that both the Derricks and the Brownings married Gwinnells and in some cases have both grandmother and grandaughter with same Gwinnell surnames so looks like the familes married into each other several generations over.
If anyone can offer any leads then they would be very much appreciated. Have lots of information on George Derrick and his descendants and am more than happy to share the information I have.

Have lots of information on George Derrick and his descendants and am more than happy to share the information I have.
hi my ancesters were holder,s and joseph holder married a sarah gwinnell i have there marriage certificate brenda x

Hi I have just found this site and was hoping to find someone researching my family too! But 17 pages later and still not a mention ???
Moderator comment: Tracy will post separately for each family - please look on the Requests board and reply there
Taken from the 1851 census for Todenham
MACE Head 57 Master Woodman Todenham
Ann Wife 38 Todenham
Amelia 20 Todenham
William 16 Woodman Todenham
Francis 14 Groom Todenham
James 13 Woodman Todenham
George 11 Scholar Todenham
Charles 9 Scholar Todenham
John 7 Todenham
Thomas 5 Todenham
These are direct relatives on my maternal grandmothers side.
Other names included with some of these are William Henry Holden, (married to Lilian Mace in 1897) I can find no reference to him anywhere else :'(
Emily Scaysbrook (sometimes spelt Scarsbrook) loads of info on their family.
John Parker Married Amelia on 15 Aug 1871, again no other details about him or them after this date. But 1891 census says:
MACE Ann Widow 58 Todenham
PARKER Alice Grand Daughter 4 Scholar Todenham
Ann died 2nd quarter 1891 so what happened to Alice???
James married an Elizabeth from higher Ongar (dob 1847) their children are registered Kensington Middlesex, census has them living at 30 Wheatstone Road, Middlesex London
George Married a Mona (dob 1848) I assume from Todenham census place was Moreton in Marsh
Francis Mace married Elizabeth Rouse I think I have tied her in with this family
ROUSE Nathaniel Head 49 Cordwainer Todenham
Mary Wife 53 Todenham
Elizabeth 15 Todenham
Mary Ann Grand Daughter 6 Scholar Todenham
FRANKLIN Robert Lodger 40 Steam Corn Thrasher Todenham
just haven't found exact date of birth or place.
Further back from these there is Ann Mason married John Mace 1734
Ann Staple married William Mace 1698
Lucy Hoare married John Mace in 1750's
Lucy Hoares father was John christened in Banbury Oxfordshire 27 Dec 1709
I apologize for this long post but if anyone has information on any of the spouses then i would be eternally gratefully as I have hit a BRICKWALL!!!
Thanks Tracy

This might be a good moment to remind everyone to enter the surnames they are researching into the Surname Interest Table (SIT).
The SIT enables you to check whether any Rootschatter is searching for the same names as you and you can refine your search down to county level - let's see if we can make Gloucestershire the county with the best coverage!!
Find the link at the bottom of every page of Rootschat or click here

Dear Rootschatters
I am going to lock this thread now.
1) because it is getting rather long!
2) because it is getting very difficult to see replies and untangle which post they refer to.
If you are new to the site and have just discovered a connection to someone on this thread, can I suggest that you either
A) send a Personal Message to the person who you share a common ancestor with, or
B) post a new thread on the Gloucestershire board with the surname you are interested in the title, together with FAO (username of person who posted)
For example "WEBB family in Dursley, FAO Arranroots"
If you would like to post your own ancestor's details, start a new thread as usual.
Any questions/ problems please feel free to send me a message by PM
kind regards, Arranroots ;)
