My Grandfather John Flynn(Reg No. at end of war 240273) served with the 5NF during WW1. Except for medal cards no other records appear to have survived specific to him. We have however been able to piece together some background: He joined the 2/5th in Blyth (his home town) in 1915 while only 17 and embarked in Belgium with 1/5th sometime in 1916. We believe he remained with the Batt until it was disbanded in 1918.
Accepting that it is very unlikely that we will find out anything directly relating to John I would be very grateful if anyone could assist us with any information / references relating to the actions / activities of the 5th NF during this period as this does not seem as readily available as it is for other battalions.
As a real long shot, his medals BWM and VM, went missing many years ago and although we have had replicas made recently it would be great to trace the originals even if it were just to know they were in a collection rather than lost. Is anyone aware of anything out there to help trace medals eg registers etc.
Thanks & regards

Hi Charjack
I think it is splendid that you had replicas made of your man's medals. I have recently been told that the British War Medal was often bought up by jewellers as they had a high silver content. ::) So it is possibly that you won't easily recover this medal, unless someone knows otherwise.
Have you tried the National Archives for the War Diaries!
Here is a link meantime:
