Title: Taylor family Skipness and Saddell
Post by: elsie ellen on Tuesday 30 October 07 09:27 GMT (UK)
Hello from Australia.  :)

I would appreciate help to find census information for the following family please:

John Taylor b Calfin, Skipness in 1788 married Margaret Duncan who was also born in Skipness circa 1791.

Known children:
Grizel b 1818
James b1820
James b1823
Margaret b 1823
Mary b 1826
John b 1827
Alexander b 1830.

I have been unable to find any census information for any members of this family and would really appreciate some assistance to track down specific census data.

Also can someone please tell me what North Colfin refers to? Is it a village or estate or house identification?  All these children have this after the birth dates that I have been given. And also are Colfin and Calfin referring to the same place?

Thanks in anticipation

Elsie  :)

Hi Elsie,
I just looked at your family and can't see a connection.

This info was sent to me by a fellow Rootschatter in 2005.
Coalfin was a farm  one of many in 18th/19th century Skipness. Perhaps more accurate to say "farm property" as the Skipness "farms" usually had several tenants. Coalfin is mentioned in documents as long ago as 1511.
Martyn told me South Coalfin was not the same as Coalfin so I guess the same goes for North Coalfin. Looking at old maps the spelling has changed more than once I think for several places.
There were Taylors there so that may be who you need to contact.

It's always worth trying CANMORE for place names like that, either as Site Name or just Keywords.  Often brings up some references which can help locate the place and occasionally with have pictures.
