Hello
I am trying to tie a relation into the Dent family from Stanhope (including St. John's Chapel). Some I know were baptised there, some may be in Stanhope
The people I am interested in are:
William Dent abt 1785 married to Martha Fairless abt 1784 (married 1802).
Their 3 children shown on IGI as baptised at St. John's Chapel:
John Dent 1802 married to Hannah Muschamp 1805 (married 1825).
Thomas Dent 1804 married to Francis Phillipson abt 1816 (married 1833 at St.Johns Chapel)
William Dent 1806 married to Jane Walston (married 1829)
The children of John Dent 1802 and Hannah
Martha 1826
George abt 1828
Mary Anne abt 1832
William abt abt 1834
Hannah abt 1836
Elizabeth abt 1838
Thanks a lot
Tony

I wasn't really sure what you wanted, but these are the baptisms of the children of William Dent and Martha:
1802
John Dent b. 9 Oct Christened 10 Oct 1st son of William Dent of Pinfoldhouse, miner, by his wife Martha Fairless
1804
Thomas Dent b. 21 Mar Christened 25 Mar 2nd son of William Dent of Pinfoldhouse, miner, by his wife Martha Fairless
1806
William Dent b. 17 Apr Christened 11 May 3rd son of William Dent of Pinfold house, miner, by his wife Martha Fairless
I have checked the baptisms for years 1813-1839 and the Baptisms of the children of John Dent and Hannah are (up to 1839):
date name of child father mother
09.09.1826 Jane John Hannah
16.06.1827 George John Hannah
06.06.1829 Martha John Hannah
20.11.1831 Mary Anne John Hannah
23.03.1834 William John Hannah
04.09.1836 Hannah John Hannah
(your Elizabeth does not appear in what I have so either her baptism was after 1839 or they had moved)
the children of Thomas & Frances are (up to 1839):
05.10.1834 Sarah Thomas Frances
01.05.1836 John Thomas Frances
29.04,1838 Thomas Thomas Frances
the children of William and Jane are (up to 1839):
04.09.1830 Thomas William Jane
21.10.1832 Jane William Jane
hope this is of use
regards

Thank you ever so much - it is just what I wanted. It is the first time I have had reference to a christening record for Martha Dent (my gg grand mother) and so confirms the link between her and this family. I thought it must be right, but it is great to get confirmaton.
If you don't mind would it be possible to check a couple of other things:
Are there any baptism records that would fit Wiliam Dent and Martha Fairless or evn their parents?
Also is there any evidence of children other than John, William and Thomas?
Again thanks for your help.

William DENT christened 01 Nov 1775 father John Dent
Siblings:
John Dent christened 09 Mar 1771
Jane Dent christened 13 Mar 1773
Sarah Dent christened 12 Apr 1778
Sarah Dent christened 22 Apr 1781
Nothing for Martha – I suspect she may have been from a neighbouring parish.
No other children found - only the 3 already given

Hi !
I have in my possession a booklet entitled "The Dent Family From Durham To Downunder."
This document was produced by John Lionel Krempin & William Thomas Dent 4th. It has the history of the Dent Family back to John Dent in 1768 and the family's eventual arrival in Australia.
If you are not aware of this book, I can let you have relevant data, subject to copyright requirements, and/or put you in touch with the author's address.
Would this be of any use ?
Regards
Alan

Hi!
Thanks for the reply via pm. As I said in my Thursday 7 May posting, I have this book written on the Dent Family which starts on 28 March 1768 with the marriage of John Dent to Jane Thompson at Stanhope and follows the family through its Australian connections almost to the present day.
The document is 116 pages long.
You may already have it. If you don't, I would be happy to answer any enquiry, providing the answer is in the book. Mainly, the book focuses on the history of Mark Dent who was married on 19 August 1839 to Sarah Hann and the families that resulted.
The families still prosper in the Hunter Region of NSW Australia.

Hello Alan
Thanks very much for the offer. I haven't a copy by the way.
I suppose I have two aims - one is to check that what is in my tree is correct and secondly to possibly fill some gaps.
Would it be OK for me to write a document setting out what I think I know so that you can check it against the book. At the same time I could through up a few questions.
It would take me a couple of days to write and I would need your e:mail.
What do you think?

Hi again Alan
Does the book deal with any of the siblings of Mark? If not, it would make the document shorter.

Hello Tony and all, not trying to usurp your posting, but I thought it was VERY interesting that I have a Fairless/Dent marriage in my tree!! :o Specifically, Robert Fairless b. 1865 married Christine Annette Dixon DENT in 1890 in Newcastle-on-Tyne. I have names and dates of their children and other ancestral information, if you are interested. Pat

Thanks a lot for that. As ever I have a few additional question:
Can I quote the book as the source or just say the information came from you?
Can you confirm any of the following marriages from the book?
Jane Dent abt 1773 and Miles Maddison in 1803 at Stanhope
Jacob Dent 1769 and Elizabeh Bowman 1792 at Stanhope – both of this parish
Rebecca Dent 1785 and John Heatherington in 1807 at Stanhope
John Dent 1802 and Hannah Muschamp in 1825 at Stanhope - my direct ancestors
Thomas Dent 1804 and Frances Phillipson in 1833 at St. John’s Chapel
William Dent 1806 and Jane Walton in 1829 at Stanhope
Thanks again

Hello Pat
More the merrier from my position. Do you know the parents of Robert Fairless b. 1865 or Christine Annette Dixon Dent?
Tony
-
Hello Tony, Robert Fairless was chr 16 July 1865 at St Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle on Tyne, NBL; his parents were John Fairless and Margaret Collinson. Christine Annette Dixon DENT's Father is Charles Dent, b abt 1832 in Ripon, Yorkshire. (they can be found in 1881 census, but Christine's Mother isn't listed -- only an "other" woman and her Brother.....Almost all of my Fairlesses of that time frame were stone masons. Let me know if you need any additional information...I will be out of town for a few days so don't give up on me. ;D Pat

This appears at the front of the Durham Dent book: "This life history has been researched and produced for Dent Family use only and is not to be reproduced in part or whole by other persons."
I understand this to mean that if you are part of the Dent Family, it is OK to use it.
The authors of the book were John Lionel Krempin and William Thomas Dent 4th. I would acknowledge them.
Those other marriages you enquired about are not mentioned. The book concentrates on the Mark Dent and Sarah Hann dynasty as it developed into Australia.
If I can help in any other way, please ask.

A bit of a think required here to establish the family relationship !!
My wife was born Jennifer Johnson,
Her father was Ken Johnson.
His mother was born Florence Gertrude Dent.
Her father was born Thomas Fairless Dent.
His father was Mark Dent born 16/11/1816
Mark was the youngest brother of the John born 9/10/1802.
Therefore, you and my wife are related.
Her Thomas Fairless Dent arrived in Australia in 1866 on the ship "Racehorse."

I had Thomas Fairless Dent in my tee, but knew nothing else about him apart from that he went to Australia.

Hi Alan
Is it possible to purchase the booklet The Dent family from Durham to Downunder. I would love to have a copy if it is possible.
William Dent and Martha Fairless (parents of Mark) are my Gt Grandparents x3. Only today have we discovered through Ancestry that Mark and Sarah went to Australia.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Marjorie.

Only too glad to help, but!! My last contact with the Dent family was in 2005. The following email address may not still be in use but try it anyway.
margdent(at) ceinternrt.com.au Replace (at) with the normal sign.
This one was also a 2005 connection;
annied(at)austarnet.com.au
I am loathe to put phone numbers or addresses of living people on the internet.
See what happens. Contact me again if you wish.
Regards
Alan

Sorry! That first email address should have been:

Thanks Alan
I will retry. My e-mails were returned undelivered.
Marjorie.

I am not sure how this works, but if you can figure out how to send me a private email, I will respond with addresses and perhaps even phone numbers. Are you in Australia ?
Alan
-
Hi Alan. Wish I was in Australia !! UK for me.
The amended e-mail address was returned to me also.
Maybe you could delete the address afterwards.
regards
Marjorie.

Hi Alan
I have been looking through some of the messages re Mark Dent.
It's true to say that Sarah and the children did arrive in Australia in 1866, but Mark was already in Australia, living in Little Hartley? NSW.
Can't figure out the reason why as yet unless he went on ahead to get things organised.ANy views on that?
regards
Marjorie.

I have just been informed by MyHeritage (to which I no longer subscribe) that a Jenny Hayes in Australia has a Mark Dent baptized 16 November 1816 and she has him as a son of my Richard Dent and Mary Stones which is not correct. I have a copy of Mark Dent's baptism register and it gives parents as William - Miner and Martha.
I can't make out the first letter of the place they were living - it might be 'E' or 'D' adry - Shield.
-
I've found it on a Google map just east of St.John's Chapel - Daddry Shield.
