Can anyone help or advise? Looking for Alexander SUTHERLAND and his family. I found them in 1841 in Latheron as: Alexander SUTHERLAND age 30 - spirit dealer. Margaret (nee MORE) age 25. Children: Caithren age 5, Alexander age 4, Margerry age 2. All born Caithness. There is also a Margerry age 55 born Caithness with them (wonder if this is Alexander's mother?). I would like to find them in future years and also find Alexander's parents.
Any help very much appreciated.

Hiya Kay,
Do you have the 1881 families for Latheron? There are lots of Alexander Sutherlands (160 born in Caithness). Very possibly they are all related.
Let me know and I'll post them.
Is this your one?

If this is your family then I truly recommend you go onto http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
As you will find the deaths of both Alexander and Margaret which may open up other generations.
All the best,
Pam

Hi Pam
I don't have access to the 1881 Latheron census but I think you have found my family. Alexander and Margaret had a son called Alexander Sutherland also who was born in 1837 - I wondered if the grandchildren could be his? They could of course belong to Catherine who is 41 and unmarried according to this census. Problem is though that I have her married and living in Edinburgh on the 1881 census and she would be 46. Bit of a puzzle. I would be interested in the other Alexander Sutherlands that you have. Kay

Here is a 1841 census - Margaret was b 1814 but her death in 1893 shows her as 82 . The ages on this 1841 census are more often a few years adrift.

Happy to exchange info.
Margaret More's Alex Sutherland was dead in 1861. Marg died 1893 so I think in 1881 she was staying with son James in Wick - I have to check that out.
What info do you have for Alexander Sutherland.

Hi Tricia
Now I am wondering about that 1841 census entry that I found that had Alexander Sutherland as a spirit dealer??? I have him born around 1811 to Margerry (don't know her maiden name or who she married). I have Margaret More born 3 Jan 1814 to the same parents that you have for her. For their children I have Catherine, Alexander and Margerry. Catherine I have married to James Harrold Weir. I have Alexander on the 1881 census in Upper Lybster as a crofter and that is all I have on him. I have Margaret with 7 siblings (John, Donald, Angus, Elizabeth, James, Janet, Alexander). Do you think we have the same family?
