Hi Frank

Long time no speak  :)

What sort of info are you looking for on Andrew Miller. I assume he is the mason by occupation who married Margaret McKenzie.  There is a lot of info on him (on IGI, census etc). There are also a number of postings on a variety of forums from descendants of this line (Andrew and Margaret).

His parents do look to have been William and Ann Bain.

Regards.

These are the refs for Andrew's death:

1884   MILLER   ANDREW    74   WICK   /CAITHNESS   043/00 0072

Son Murdoch reported his death ~ parents as you thought.

It looks like more people are trying to track down the family, including connections with Margaret Mckenzie:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.mackenzie/620/mb.ashx - relatively recent post (Aug 07).  This chap has at least have a dozen similar posts on a number of other gen. forums trying to trace the same info. Might be worth contacting?

http://forum.caithness.org/archive/index.php/t-22635.html - this lady from Australia looks to be a direct descendant from son Murdoch.

Remind me, what were the issues with Margaret Mckenzie......

I've caught up with myself to do with Margaret McKenzie. We couldn't find much about her before could we. I have found her death:

1908   MILLER   MARGARET  MCKENZIE   87   WICK   /CAITHNESS   043/00 0091

Her parents tie up with the IGI entry we found previously, an actual extract from the OPRs:

MARGARET MACKENZIE  Christening:  24 JAN 1819 Assynt, Sutherland, Scotland
Parents: MURDOCH MACKENZIE and CHIRSTY (MCRAE from her DC)

Supporting this date (rather than a 1823 birth year) is her 1841 census entry, by which time she was already married to Andrew Miller and living in Castleton:

Andrew, 30 - Occup. Mason, b. Caithness
Margaret Mackenzie, 20, b. Scotland

Apart from the other potential sister we found (Katherine b. 1829 in Assynt) there has been little more to be found so far.

I'll have another look for what info there is on Andrew's parents.

For William Miller and Ann Bain, as background which I am guessing you already have some (but helps to get it into my head  ;)):

WILLIAM MILLER  Marriages: ANN BAIN    Marriage:  23 NOV 1805  Bower, Caithness, Scotland

Their children's births, mostly backed up by the OPRs:

1. Donald Miller  Birth: 30 SEP 1806 Lyth, Bower, Caithness, Scotland
2. John Miller  Birth: 02 MAY 1808 Lyth, Bower, Caithness, Scotland
3. George Miller Birth: 10 FEB 1809 Lyth, Bower, Caithness, Scotland
4. Andrew Miller Christening: 28 JUL 1809 Wick, Caithness, Scotland
5. Margaret Miller Birth: 17 APR 1811 Lyth, Bower, Caithness, Scotland
6. William Miller Birth: 22 SEP 1812 Lyth, Bower, Caithness, Scotland
7. James Miller: Birth 28 SEP 1814 Bower, Caithness, Scotland

This is the closest I can see on the 1841/51 Censuses for parents William (a farmer according to Andrew's DC) and Ann:

1841
William Miller    63, farmer
Ann Miller    60
Barbara McKenzie 15, FS

Address:  Howe, wick

1851
William Miller    72, farmer, b. Bower
Ann Miller 72, b. Dunnet

Address:  Ruthers Of Howe, Wick

No sign of a death for William post 1855 so hard to confirm parents' names.  Ann Bain's death refs:

1863   MILLER   ANNE   LAING (mother's maiden name)   BAIN   86   WICK LANDWARD   /CAITHNESS   043/02 0030

Submitted details on IGI for Anne's parents:

Donald Bain  Birth: About 1742 Bowermadden, Bower, Caithness, Scotland
Marriages: Spouse: Margaret Laing 18 JAN 1767 Bower, Caithness, Scotland

With William and Anne's children's naming order, you would think William's father's name would be John, sadly no daughters' names other than Margaret after Anne's mother. There are two possibilities showing on the OPRs:

1   13/03/1780   MILLER   WILLIAM   JOHN MILLER/ANE CORMACK FR 112   U   Bower   /CAITHNESS   034/ 0010 0189
2   06/09/1782   MILLER   WILLIAM   JOHN MILLER/HELLEN BAIN FR 124   U   Bower   /CAITHNESS   034/ 0010 0201

I'll stop there Frank,  let you go through this and see if it connects with what you may have....I just wish Margaret Mckenzie was as straightforward!

Regards.

Monica

Have you seen this site by John Page http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/8471/

It includes details of your Miller and McKenzie lines. It has Margaret McKenzie's mother down as MCLEOD rather MCRAE which shows on Margaret's DC.

Cannot thank you enough for all your help. It has certainly filled in some blanks.
Christy and Murdoch are certainly a bit of an enigma though. Still, time might tell!!
Still struggling with William Miller born Bower cir 1775 also Alexander Harper born Noss, caithness 1740 he was married to Elspeth Farquhar.
So many threads now I am beginning to get a bit mixed up at times. Must be my age
Take care

Hi Longberry
William Miller and Ann Bain were my great-great-great grandparents. I am happy to share the information I have.
I am descended through their son Andrew and his wife Margaret, their son Murdoch and his son Andrew and my dad Albert Murdoch.
What would you like to know, I have a lot of birth/marriage death certificate copies.

Hi Frank
I have William's death certificate for 18 Dec 1862 and it gives his father as Donald Miller, weaver. I know it's the right person as it gives William's wife as Anne Bain. No mother's name was given. Information was given by James, his son.
Cheers
Sue

Don
this is great it confirms some of my research and adds quite a bit I didn't know. I'm happy to share any of my research, so if you want details of my side of the family I'm very happy to share, just let me know what you want to know. I would be interested in knowing who your great grndmother married etc.
Best wishes
Sue
