Title: Offer:Toowoomba QLD Headstone Photos
Post by: MarieC on Wednesday 07 February 07 11:35 GMT (UK)
Toowoomba burials are listed online at:

http://www.toowoomba.qld.gov.au/index.php?option=com_gravefinder&Itemid=46

If anyone finds an ancestor there and lets me know, I will go with my digital camera and take a photo of the headstone (if it exists and is legible!) and email it to you.

I've been bedevilled by an Internet dropout that lasted days, and showery weather, but I did go to the cemetery yesterday and have a wander around.

Nola, I've found and photographed the headstone you are interested in.  If you pm me your email address, I'll send it to you.

Sandy, I had a look for a few of yours, including the oldest ones, but they are eluding me.  I'm beginning to wonder if they didn't have headstones!  I am going to contact someone who knows a lot about the families buried in the cemetery and see what he can tell me.  I'll be back in touch with you soon.

i will do that, as soon as I get another spare moment.

Sandy - don't give up, I am going to speak to that cemetery expert and maybe he can shed some light.  Otherwise I'll look for the ones I haven't yet looked for.

Nola - I got a message that you had sent me a pm but it isn't showing up on my pm index.  I don't understand that at all!!!  ??? ???  Computers!!  ::) ::) ::)  If you could resend the pm, maybe I'll get it the second time??  ::) ::)

Hi, just wanted to say that I have found the people at Toowoomba and Drayton Cemetary excellent. If you are having problems finding plots they will give you a map of where the grave is &/or actually take you there  :)

I also could not find a MI for a person which was very strange given the rest of his extended family did have headstones. He was the only one however ,who was buried during ww2.  I was told that he may have had a wooden cross, and that a fire through the cemetery may have destroyed it.

Thanks Helen,

Yes, I had a map of the cemetery, thanks, which I got from the cemetery people, and I searched a couple of sections where Sandy's family graves were supposed to be, without finding headstones.

I think my next best step is to speak to the local cemetery expert, when I catch up with him.  I am pretty good at finding graves where headstones DO exist, having found quite a few of my own!

Anyway, Nola's has gone to her, and I will be pursuing the others.  If anyone else has a wish, let me know!

Just an update here,

Sandy, I have found about five of yours - just have to take one more photo and then I will email them to you.  Could you pm me your email address, please?

For Sandy and Trees - looking for people in Old CE 1 and Old CE 2 is an absolute nightmare.  Graves are all jumbled up and some headstones are broken, illegible, or missing.  I have already spent a lot of time walking round those sections looking fruitlessly for your people buried there.  I spoke to the cemetery officer about this and he confirmed that it is a nightmare.  I'll keep looking, now and then, when I am there, but don't know if I will find those particular people!  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

MODERATORS - if you read this, would you mind "stickying" this post so that anyone else who joins the thread can find this easily?  I am happy to have ongoing requests for cemetery lookups.

Hi Marie

Thank you.   :)  :)  :)

1. for taking the time to look and find the graves you did.

Although our graveyards/cem are not so bad some are in a terrible condition with
smashed graves by vandals and other people memorials on the plots so you think
that they are also buried there.

2. Making this offer to people who obviously can not get to the places themselves to
take photographs of their lineage.

Much appreciated.

Photographs now arrived safely.

Made my day.

Hi MariaC

I don't think you will find any graves for my family, but I know that there is a memorial to one of them in the church, along with his medals.  He was 2nd Lt. E.A. Beer, k.i.a. in France in 1917.  There should also be a memorial to his wife, Harriet Maud Beer.

Thanks for your efforts.

Hi Bill,

I'll be happy to take a look, but you'll need to let me know which church!  There are dozens of churches in Toowoomba so I must know where to go!

We have a Keith Beer on the city council at present - wonder if he is a distant rellie of yours.  Not one of my favourite councillors, I have to say!

OK Bill!  :D

'Tis my old parish church, but I am a heathen these days.  I know that the church is locked most of the time, so I'll need to find an opportunity to get in and look for your rellies.  Bear with me.  I'll get there, but it may take a little while!!  I'm not going to attend a service there, even for you!!  ;D  (Been there, been burnt!)

I need help!!!! My great uncle & aunt had a farm 'Lea Green' at Merringandan near Toowoomba. Where would they be buried? There names were Robinson unfortunately I only know his nickname - Chum - born about 1900 in England and his wife was Nell  born in Australia (was that the name she was baptised with?) - allegedly 12 years older than him! They died about 1960-70. Not much to go on is it.

Judi

You will need more information than that!

It is almost impossible to say where they would be buried.  Firstly, there is a link to Gravefinder at the Drayton and Toowoomba cemetery at the beginning of this thread.  If you haven't done so already, please log on to it and search the Robinsons and see if anything jumps out at you.  Of course there are a lot of Robinsons buried there, and the only Nellie Robinson definitely is NOT your relative - she is a former Mayor of Toowoomba.

Also in Toowoomba there is a private lawn cemetery called the Garden of Remembrance and a crematorium.  They could have been buried there, or cremated.

Alternatively, there are some little country graveyards scattered round the place.  They could even have been buried in one of those.

What religious denomination did they belong to?

You need to find out his given name from family members/birth indexes/baptism records, wherever you can search.  I am sure that you should be able to find it!  If you can do that, I will try to help you find them.

Hi Judi,

Just following on from Marie, I checked the Meringandan cemetery records (which are not complete) on the following website;

http://www.interment.net/data/aus/qld/crowsnest/meringandan.htm

Unfortunately no Robinsons are listed. Meringandan is part of Crows Nest Shire, so I had a quick look on their website;

http://www.cnnet.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=139&Itemid=159.

They have 5 cemeteries on line, but once again not knowing your g-uncle & aunt's forenames makes it hard.

The only other thing I can suggest is that you contact State Library of Queensland who have an 'Ask Us' /'Ask a Librarian' service (query form on-line) - they will check their records including electoral rolls (past & present). Hopefully they may be able to give you some information on the Robinson family of Lea Green, Meringandan. The direct link to ask a librarian at SLQ is ;

Hi, Bill 749!  :D

I have got into St Luke's and had a look around.  I also spoke to two people who know the church extremely well.  One has written its history and one also knows pretty well everything that is in there.

Mixed results, I fear.  Nothing for E.A. Beer and there are no medals of any kind held in the church.  There is a Warriors' Chapel but nothing there.  Neither person knew anything about E.A. Beer.

However, I found a little plaque for Harriet Maud Beer.  I photographed it but the flash reflected off it and it isn't very clear.  I did, however, copy down the wording.

If you send me your email address I will send you what I have about Harriet.

It might be worth your while contacting the Milne Bay Military Museum in Toowoomba to ask about E.A. Beer.  Their website address is:

http://www.milnebaymilitarymuseum.com/

and you can contact them through the site.  If he was a Toowoomba lad, I think they will know about him.

Hope this helps,

MarieC

Hi Kelmark

It is amazing me how many Rootschatters, many elsewhere, have people buried in the Drayton and Toowoomba cemetery!

Certainly I'll have a look for these people.  It may be a week or so as I am currently beset by crises and deadlines, but I will get to it.  I will try to find a couple more of Sandy's too.

Best wishes,

Sandy, I looked for two more of yours, with no luck.  There just were no headstones for them where there should have been!  At least you have some of them.

You've confused me.  I haven't found your people 'cos we don't know where they are buried.  I thought you were checking with the Queensland State Library to see if they could help with the names of your people??  It's Kelmark I've found graves for, and Kelmark hasn't been back here lately.

Oh and you might like to modify your post to remove your email address or at least replace @ with at!  We don't normally post email addresses on here because of the potential for spam and other nasties.  Safer to pm your email address to people.

I looked for your folks yesterday - only found one of the gravestones, unfortunately!  There are some graves with headstones illegible or not there.  A grave near where your Fairbanks couple should be has just a stone edging with "Father" and "Mother" on it - not very helpful!

Anyway, I have a couple of photos of Thomas William Fairbanks's stone, so if you pm your email address to me, I shall send them to you!

Hi Nari

I've been searching for your lot.  Unfortunately I could not find headstones for two of them, though there were a number of unmarked graves in those sections.  But there is a surprise for you with little Catherina Lindenmayer - someone I don't think you knew about!

Although she died before her third birthday, she had a twin sister, Christine Beutel, who lived to be 98!!  They are buried together, with an inscription on the foot of the grave saying "Together again".  It is really touching.

I am about to email the photo of the plaque on the grave giving their details.

Cheers

Hi Marie,

Thankyou so much for the photo and no I wasn't aware of Catherine having her twin being buried with her, that was a surprise, when I did the search on the Toowoomba cemetery website it usually will mention if there are two people buried in the same grave which in this case it didn't.

How very lovely that they are now back together after all that time.

The photo is great and I really appreciate your time and effort in looking for me, it is much appreciated

Thankyou again

At ozgenonline - http://www.ozgenonline.com/aust_cemeteries - someone has an alphabetical list of headstone photos available for free for the Toowoomba cemetery.

You would need to check the list and quote the reference no.
e.g. , the request for Catherine Lindenmeyer is as - Lindenmayer, Catherine F. - DSC 002044 Luth 1c31-36 CD8

Hi Annie,

Firstly, welcome to Rootschat!  ;D  And thank you very much for posting such a useful post so early in your membership here!!!  :D

So I suppose the best approach for those looking for photos of headstones in the Drayton and Toowoomba cemetery is as follows:

First, look up the cemetery index to get the reference for your person.

Second, check the website that Annie has given.  If you find the headstone there, great!  If you don't, still feel free to ask me to have a look.  It may mean that they just haven't got around to photographing yours (it is a very big cemetery!), or it may mean that the headstone is illegible or missing, like some I've looked for already.  :'(

If anyone ever needs something in Toowoomba, I'll try my hardest to oblige.

SE Qld Rootschatters are a lot of fun, and our meets are a laugh a minute!  There are buses (Greyhound) that would get you there, or I may be driving.  If you'd like to contact me closer to the date, I'll know what I'm doing, and could give you a lift if you want.

Thanks for the offer. I'm sure you could give me some wise advice for researching my family history, after all I am only 17 (and only began research a few months ago). :)

haha that's the one thing I'm good at...talking! Thanks, it was the fact that my Nana had some information on her mother's ancestors that triggered my thirst to know my ancestors. Luckily for me my 1st Cousin 2 Times Removed had already gathered a wealth of information, so to start it was easy (just had to input a lot of information into PAF), but now (with other sides, and the brick walls that aforementioned cousin hit) it has become so much harder.

Thanks for the offer, I'll get back to on it. What date will the meeting be?

It is set down for Sunday 7 October, at the State Library/Southbank in Brisbane (the jury is still out on how much time will be spent in the library researching and how much at a cafe socialising!)  You'll find threads in the Common Room with lots of discussion!

Have just found CHRISTIE and KRETSCHMAR graves, and photographed them, for a Rootschatter.

If anyone has an interest in these graves, or the families concerned, let me know as I have some information.  :)

For some reason I didn't get an email notifying me of your post - don't know why!  ???  Just as well I looked at the thread!  :D

Yes, certainly I'll go and look for them for you.  It's raining at present, so when it fines up....

Being relatively recent, they should have good clear inscriptions!

Hi Michael

I thought this thread was dead and buried!  I see you are a new member and it didn't take you long to ferret it out!  Welcome to Rootschat, from me! :D

Given that it is a fairly recent burial in the Baptist-Congregational section, it should be fairly easy to find, and there should be a headstone.  When I get time, I will go with my camera and see what I can find.

Whereabouts are you?

Hi Marie

I am in Ireland, county cork. I found some old telegraphs in the attic at home and I found that my gran-uncle lived in Toowoomba....trying to get as much information about what he did etc. Actually he worked on sheep stations and also as a gardener I believe at either St Saviours or the Sisters of Mercy around the 1950s....he also lived to be quiet old at 91 yrs. Thanks for the help....very much apppreciated.....

Hi Michael

Lovely place, Cork!  I was there in 2009, in that VERY wet time you had - some of my ancestors owned Mallow Castle and I saw it in the bucketing rain, not the best view!

Sounds as though your ancestor should have been Roman Catholic - wonder why he is buried in the Baptist-Congregational section?  Anyway, I will have a look very soon.  Do you know when and how he came to Australia?

From what I can gather he left Ireland in 1927 and travelled first to the US with two brothers. He then travelled onto Australia, I am not sure when he arrived in Australia. From his letters to my dad, he worked in sheep stations and on tennis courts in Toowoomba, are you aware if they are any records from sheep stations in the area that I could look up online, maybe this is a long shot !!. He wrote several letters to my dad and spoke about the lack of water (which is not a problem in Ireland as you can see!!) in the Toowoomba area. He also spoke about coming home etc each year but never made it.

Mike

Mike

Your only chance there would be if you knew the names of any of the sheep stations, you could write to the current owners and see if they have any records of him working there.  If you think he worked at St Saviour's (a Catholic school for girls here), you could write to the school - they may have records of his employment there.

Bad news, Mike!  :( :'(

Your ancestor is buried in an unmarked grave.  Where his grave is, there are obviously quite a number of unmarked graves, and it is next to the "Public" section where paupers were previously buried in unmarked graves.  I am wondering, if he was unmarried, whether he died without much money and was buried as cheaply as possible by the authorities.  This is very sad.  It would be absolutely possible for you to pay for a plaque to be placed on his grave, if you wish, or a headstone - you'd just need to contact the cemetery by email to enquire.

Is there any other help I can give you?

Hello Marie,

I just found your post (I don't know how old it is) and I was just wondering if you are still 'in business' :) If you are I would really appreciate a photo of the grave of
 Emily Ford
d. 20th June 1906 - 42 years old
Methodist
from the Toowoomba (Drayton) Cemetery.

I live in Victoria so it is a little hard for me to get to the cemetery! :)

If you can do it do I pm you my email address?

Thank you and have a really nice day
Tiana :)

Hello Tiana,

Yes, I am still here and the offer is still open! :)

Unfortunately, though, I have bad news for you.  I've looked hard for your Emily, but the section where she is buried has quite a few unmarked graves and I fear that hers is one of them.  I certainly can't find a headstone, and without that, it's hard to know which patch of grass is hers. :'(

Were there any other family members here?  Or any clues that could be followed?

Hello Marie,

Thank you so much for the trouble that you have gone to for me! :) When you mentioned 'clues' it made me smile:) because Emily's life was an entire 'mystery' to us until just recently!! Her story is very sad :'(

I had another look at the cemetery website and found the plot number:)
She is in METHODIST section 1, plot No: 012-0026

Here is the information off of the website:
Last name FORD

First name(s) Emily

Maiden name

Gender Female

Religion Methodist

Date of birth Date not available.

Date of death 20 June 1906

Date of burial 22 June 1906

Age at death 42 Years

Cemetery Drayton & Toowoomba

Interment number METH1-012-0026

As to 'clues'......   Emily was born in 1863, in England. When she died she was the wife of William Ford (b.1869), who was her second husband. Her first husband had been Alfred Baker (a terrible character!). Her maiden name was Lunnon/Lennon/Louden/ and London (she used all of them!!!!!)

I hope that something of the above may help you identify her plot  :-\

Thank you sooooo much for your help - and I do hope that I am not being too much of a bother!!!
Have a great day :)
Tiana :D

Hello Tiana,

Yes, I had found all that information myself, but it does not help to identify her grave.  She is in the "Old" Methodist section, and in the "Old" sections of the Drayton and Toowoomba cemetery, things tend to be a bit higgledy-piggledy.  I have searched around the area where she would be according to the cemetery records, but there is no headstone.

I see there are several William Fords buried there but I can't tell which, if any, is her husband, and it wouldn't help much anyway as they are all in completely different parts of the cemetery.  No sign of Alfred Baker.

I'm sorry to hear that she had a sad life.  She certainly died young.  Is she a direct ancestor of yours?

Marie

Thank you Marie, for all of your help :) - I will just make a note in my file that she has an unmarked grave.
Yes, she is a direct ancestor of mine - my great great great grandmother and she died of stomach cancer and exhustion.

I do not think that William Ford is buried in that cemetery because none of the ones that I saw, that are buried there, matched up with ours.

I am not surprised that you can find no sign of Alfred Baker(my great great great grandfather) - he is still a mystery to us, we cannot find a death for him anywhere. Another person doing research on him said that he amy have chnged his name.  He was a bit of a rogue!  >:(
Thank you very much for your help,
Tiana :)
Title: Re: Toowoomba QLD Headstone Photos offer
Post by: MarieC on Saturday 07 July 12 11:19 BST (UK)
Poor lady - it seems she did have a short sad life, with a painful death.  I hope she was happier with Mr Ford than with your ggggrandfather.  Anyway, she would be very pleased that you are researching her.  I'm afraid I won't be able to follow up those husbands, by the sound of things.

This is a long shot, but have you looked for her on Trove?  It's just possible that a death notice or obituary might have appeared in the Brisbane newspaper, the Courier Mail.  Sadly, the Toowoomba newspapers are mostly undigitised - it's a long story, don't start me off on it!  If you haven't got a death notice of any kind, if I have time I may go and look in the microfilms of the Toowoomba Chronicle and see if there is a death notice.

Just a thought - if ever you can afford it, you might think of getting a marker for her grave.  That way, the cemetery will have to identify her patch of grass and there will be some record there for her descendants.  (Of course, I have seen this happen on WDYTYA but I know those people have more money than you and I!! :) )

Let me know if I can be of any more help.

Marie  :)

hello :)
Thank you so much for all of your help! I have looked on Trove and cannot find a death notice, so if you ever have time could you hace a look at the Toowoomba Chronicle for me?  I do not want to be a bother!!

I would like to get a marker for her grave - if oneday I can afford it - so that she will be remembered, more, in the cemetery :)

She, her husband, and their two children immigrated from England - her infant son died at sea. When they were in Australia she had another son, but, when he was still only an infant, her husband, Alfred, absconded and left his wife and family penniless and without a home - he drank everything away.

She suffered severly from depression and became mentally ill. The two children, Annie 4, and John 1, where put into an orphanage and she was put into the Goodna Asylum. She was so ill that she put John's name down as Harry (her dead baby's name) and his birthplace as Ceylon!!!!

She eventually got out of the Asylum, had another son, which she could not afford to look after (Alfred had again gone) so she gave him up for adoption. She married William Ford in 1903 and then died in 1906.
Her story is sad, but thankfully, William was a lot nicer than Alfred!  (I just thought I would tell you this so that if you do have time to look for a death notice - this info might help.) She married William Ford in Mt. Whitestone - he was a widowed farmer with two little boys when Emily married him.

Thank you so much for your help!!! It is so much apperciated :)
Best Wishes,
Tiana :)

She certainly did have a lot of sadness and difficulties in her short life!  I'm glad to hear that her last few years with William Ford were probably happy.  Which of the children are you descended from?  And have you been able to trace any of the descendants of the one given up for adoption?

I'll have a look at the microfilm of the Toowoomba Chronicle for you.  Can't promise when this will be, but I'll do it as soon as I can.  I think we owe it to Emily to find out all the details we can, and honour them and her life! :)

Thank you so much Emily!!  :)  :)

I come through Emily's daughter, Annie Louisa. I have been able to find the decendants (it was very hard!) of William.

The sad thing about him was that when he was in his twenties he tried to find his sister (the only living relative at the time - John Thomas "Harry" had been killed in action in WWI, in 1916, his photo is on the Australian War Memorial site), he found her and tried telling her that he was her brother, but she would not believe him and her husband told him to never see them again.

He tried again when he was in his fifties, but again Annie did not believe him.... She had been in the orphanage when he was born, and oviously had never known that he existed!!  Poor William also had a terrible stutter from the age of three - sometimes he went totally 'dumb' and could not speak until he had slaped his thigh - this is what got him discharged from WWI!! I do feel sorry for him that his 'real' family never accepted him :'(

Thank you again so much!! - We do indeed owe it to Emily to find out all that we can! :)

Hi,
I'm looking for the resting place of my Great Grandfather Leonard Timothy O'Gara who died 21 February 2000.

Find A Grave says he was cremated on 24 February 2000 and buried in Toowoomba Garden of Remeberance.

It would me so much if you would be able to find anything there. I know very little about his time in Australia as he was born in Surrey, England before emigrating to Australia in 1955.

Thank You,

Hi Rebecca and others,

As a Toowoomba person, I don't know why the Garden of Remembrance doesn't have a link to its burials/cremations like most other cemeteries do.

Can't find anything about your ancestor on their website.  Suggest you click on "Contact Us" and ask them directly.

From my knowledge of the place (and I have rellies buried there, including my parents), cremated remains are either placed in a wall or scattered in various gardens - but in both cases, there should be a plaque.

If you have no success with the "Contact us" approach, post again here.  I will see if I can call in there and ask the office about your ancestor.

Hi Marie

Im originally from England and now live in Canberra and recently discovered a family member on my mums side is buried in Toowoomba Garden of Rememberance. I am trying to find as much information as I can of him.

He was called John McIntyre Hastie. He used to live at 2 Laurel Place, Toowoomba. He died in 1971 aged 65. Plot number 206-B-7.

A bit of history. My Gran, Grandad and Mum came to Australia just after WWII on the assisted passage and they went to live with John (my grans brother). Unfortunately they didnt like Australia so moved back to Glasgow, Scotland!!! Go figure?? I remember my mum saying she had cousins in Australia but I was young and didnt really think much about it. I moved to Australia 26 years ago and have just recently started thinking about my mums side of the family. I would love to find out about them.

If you are ever out at the cemetary I would love it if you could possibly have a look around? There are no lists/details of burials on the GOR website, just the contact us option.

Anyway, I know its a stab in the dark, but would very much appreciate it if you could go have a look next time you are there.

Kind regards
Steve

Hi Steve,
With a bit more information, we can maybe help further in your search.

Can you give some actual names such as those of the grandparents and possibly more detail of the relationship of the cousin to your mother?
Her father's sibling's child? her mother's sibling's child?

Sue
Title: Re: Offer:Toowoomba QLD Headstone Photos
Post by: MarieC on Saturday 26 January 19 03:58 GMT (UK)
Hi Steve, Cass and Sue,

Steve, I think the photo Cass has posted the link to is very likely your ancestor.  This is what the plaques in our Garden of Remembrance are like.  They are level with the turf so that the operators of the Garden can mow over them.  This means, sadly, that you don't get a lot of information from the plaques because there isn't room for much.

I probably wouldn't get much more physical information if I went out there.  I suggest you contact the Garden of Remembrance - website  https://www.toowoombacrem.com.au  - and hit the "Contact Us" button, explain your interest in the burial and ask if they have any information they can give you.  My cousin did this fairly recently, with a burial that appeared to be his godfather (surprisingly, since the man lived in Victoria) and got some information which solved the riddle!

Let me know if I can help more.

Good luck!

Marie

PS Sadly, the Toowoomba "Chronicle" is not yet digitised on Trove, for reasons too complex to explain in a sentence or two, so you can't search for traces of him there.  His death notice (if there was one) has not yet been indexed on the Ryerson Index.

Title: Re: Offer:Toowoomba QLD Headstone Photos

Am I the only person to have this trouble?  Firefox reports that the Toowoomba web site is incorrectly configured, and declines to connect to it.

I thought I had dozens of cousins buried in Toowoomba, but can find only one:
George Patterson [or Paterson] Raff, cremated in August 1989 with ashes at the Garden of Remembrance.

Marie, if your offer is still open, and if you're going there some time, would you be prepared to see whether there's a memorial plaque to him?
Title: Re: Offer:Toowoomba QLD Headstone Photos

Hugh, I am not sure which website you can't access, but they all work for me.  If you could access the Garden of Remembrance website, you could ask them about your ancestor yourself by clicking the "Contact Us" button.

Anyway, your ancestor does not appear to be indexed on austcemindex, for whatever reason, nor on the Ryerson Index which indexes death notices in Australian newspapers.  I will ring the G of R and ask about his ashes.  If there is indeed a plaque and the ashes haven't just been scattered, I will get out there sometime and try to take a photo.  It won't be straight away, because we are having an awful heatwave, not the kind of weather to be plodding round cemeteries.  But I will get there when the weather improves.

Life would be fine if we didn't have politicians ...

The trouble is, Hugh, that our stupid politicians are allowing firms to put solar farms on some of our good agricultural land, which we don't have much of, rather than in the desert.  Go figure!!!

That original link probably doesn't work any more - it is years old.  Anyway, the Garden of Remembrance is a private concern, not run by the local council.  Why not go to the website www.toowoombacrem.com.au and click on the "Contact Us" button and you can ask them yourself about your ancestor.  You probably won't get an answer before Tuesday because Monday is the Australia Day public holiday.  They should be able to tell you what they have for him.  Then let me know if there is a plaque which hasn't yet been photographed for the other website, and I can go some time and find it.  It won't tell you much, I fear - probably just name and dates of birth and death.

Hi CassT, Sue and Marie

Thats him. Thank you for the link. Much appreciated. Looks like he re-married.

Ive been digging around for more info (which I dont have here at work!!)

His parents were Agnes McIntyre and Thomas Alexander Hastie. He moved from Glasgow to Australia and ended up in Toowoomba.

He married Annie Hunter Meiklejohn Munro Madden (also from Glasgow) on 5 October 1936 and moved in to her parents house at 2 Laurel Lane, Toowoomba. Annie had a brother Joe Madden and her Dad was Daniel Madden. Her uncle was Joseph. They are listed on the virtual war memorial site:

https://vwma.org.au/explore/people/637333
https://vwma.org.au/explore/people/723357
https://vwma.org.au/explore/people/199592

I would love to get in contact with Jennifer Munro who added the details/story to these two. Gave me a lot of clues.

John enlisted at Toowoomba in 1942, survived the war and came out in 1946. Unfortunately, his wife Annie Hastie died in 1943. I reckon the reason my Gran (Johns sister), Grandad and my mum (aged 5). Came out was to help him with their children after he was released from the army and having lost his wife.

Will keep you posted.
Cheers
Steve
