Title: Help needed to find Nixon family - Roscrea
Post by: romawi on Monday 28 January 08 01:39 GMT (UK)
I'm hoping someone wonderful maybe able to help me trace part of my mothers family from Roscrea. The Fathers name was John Nixon, his wife Jane, They had at least 6 sons but maybe more. Two Adam and James died whilst only 19 and 25 during WW1. I'm sure most of the sons must have been born around 1870 to 1900. The other sons names were probably Robert, George, John and Joseph. They may have lived at Ayre Hill at some time around 1914. If any one could help find any christening, Marriage or deaths or even maybe on one of the census's that would be wonderful.
Thank you.

Johns first wife died, and he re.married.  Served as a Special Constable during 2nd World War. John visited Roscrea in 1938 and again in 1949.

Joseph retired to Bexhill on Sea, believe he had one daughter .
I have a poem which Joseph wrote in memory of the brother James.

I believe there were 11 children(10 sons and 1 daughter)

Hope this will help .

Glencanon, wow! what an amazing history of my relatives. I presume from your information that you are related too. I would be so very interested in any more information that you may have on this family connection and especially the poem Joseph wrote.
Sorry I haven't replied to you information sooner. i live in New Zealand, have 3 young children, and work too. My family history passion fits in when I have time and this is a little erratic, but I really do appreciate your help and response, I will pass it on to my Mother in law staright away.
Thanks
Sarah

Hello from West coast Scotland, I am the grand daughter of John Nixon.  I have personal knowledge of grandfathers military and family life from long conversations with him in my early life. The poem is as follows:-
In France there is a grave
A grave of covered clay
And underneath that mossy bank
Our darling Jimmy lay.

Let not a single teardrop fall
Nor be there sounds of weeping
While lost for ever to us all
Our darling Jim is sleeping

For weary months he fought in vain
Waiting the Peace that never came
But God himself he thought it best
To take him to Eternal rest

The Lord he took our boy away
But we will not repine
For in that Heavenly Home above
Our darling Jim will shine

The fairest flower was first to fall
The seweetest first to fade
The fondes, dearest, best of all,
Within the grave is  laid.

Sergt/ Joseph Nixon 1st Bn Leinster Regt. R.C.  18.6.17

This show of brotherly love never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

I will let you have further information in the near future re the medals etc and the remaining family.
Peace and Love,
G.

I have a few details about Adam who died at Gallipoli but not James although i did find details about him on Commonwealth war graves. i have a lovely photo of Robert and his family I will put it on here for you as soon as I can. I would love any information you may be able to give me on John and your family.

Hello  Sarah,

I would be very pleased to receive the photos and any information on any of our family members. I have been working on the family tree since 1972, and I greatly appreciate you taking time to provide the information. I have followed my fathers family back to the mid 1700s,  and have visited many of the areas in which they lived and worked. I was very close to my grandfather Nixon and it was said in the family that he was seen always with a dog to one heel and me at the other.  I inherited his love of animals and the outdoors, and as a child I heard first hand his stories of his time served in India, his love for his native Ireland, and  wasin Dublin at Easter time 1916 when the Post Office was taken over in the name of the Republic, and in 1995 I visited Dublin and stood at the same site.  He met my grand mother on that same leave whilst recovering from wounds, the bullet he carried with him to death in 1957. His son John  served in a Scottish Regiment, and married a Scots  girl. They had 2 children, XXXX  My mother XXXX I gave up my career to take care of  my late father, and moved to Scotland 2004.

I am driving down to England tomorrow, on leave for 10 days, and taking with  me family photos for my daughter to scan into the laptop. Hopefully I will be able to forward them on to you.  Over the years I have  rescued  family photos and documents, questioned living relatives, and read up history local to the family homes.  We do share a very interesting family and I have alway thought it important that the stories should be passed on, and that the information gives many answers as to how our own character has developed.

Will be in touch on my return from England.

Peace and love,
Greraldine.

My Grandfather was George Nixon, son of Jane and John.  He was married and had two children but his wife died and he re-married and had a further eight children, the youngest of whom was my mother.  In the gallery of six pictures that you have posted, George is the middle one in the top row.

On the off chance that someone is still keeping an eye on this thread...

I believe that George Nixon was my Great Grandfather and he had a son, also called George. My Grandfather served with the British Army during WWII and married a Maltese woman. If anyone can give me pointers/ideas on trying to figure out what happened to my Grandfather, I'd be more than happy.

OOh, ta, it looks like it.

The "George" noted in the 1901 would have been my Great Grandfather. I believe that he died in 1944 but from what I've seen, he was 57 when he died (http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/tipperary/photos/tombstones/1headstones/st-cronan.txt (http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/tipperary/photos/tombstones/1headstones/st-cronan.txt)).

If he was 12 in 1901, then he would have been 55 in 1944. Could the census have the wrong date?

From the links you provided, the last census is 1911. Is there any way I can see census data after this?

People often didn't know their own age, they didn't celebrate birthdays much and weren't constantly having to give DOB on forms as we do so errors in ages particular on death records is not unusual.

The next Census is 1926 and won't be released until 2026. 100 year data protection rules.

There is a death of a George Nixon Ex Soldier in Ashbury Roscrea 3 Feb 1944 age 56 informant wife Margaret

Do you have an idea when and where your Great Grandfather married.
Ideally you need your grand father's birth to check his mother's name.

The George in the igp headstone record I think was married to Bridget Bourke they married in 1911 and he was Full age so at least 21 she was 18 1/2 so that would fit with dying in 1916 aged 23
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1911/09940/5614081.pdf
His father was also John.
So quite likely this is the same George that went on to marry Margaret Ryan.

I'm definitely seeing more info on my Great Grandfather, as this matches up with most of the info I have.

My Grandfather's parents are definitely George Nixon and Margaret Ryan. Funnily enough, it's not from the Irish birth certificate that I see this, but from the Maltese wedding certificate.

I'll need to pull this info all together over the weekend. Is there anyway I can get more info on my Grandfather though, as this is where I seem to be hitting a dead end.

Thanks very much for everything you've done so far, it's been really useful.

The difficulty with your Grand Father is that he is a bit too recent for online records.

His military records will still be with the MOD Ministry of Defence in the UK,I believe you can get them if you have his death cert and can prove you are related. There are several threads about this on the Armed Forces board. This is one

:) That's what kicked all of my researching off. I can't find any proof that my Grandfather is dead or alive. The last info I have is that he moved back to Roscrea in 1962 and after that, it's been radio silence. What's been really good, is that I've seen my family tree has just blown up in size. It's pretty amazing. I've found more about my Irish heritage than I know of my Maltese heritage and I've not had as much contact with the Irish side for the moment.

The MoD have been not very helpful. Even my Mum has had problems in getting any details from them.

I'll check the thread out later on, but thanks again.

Do you know when your Grandfather was born?
If there is anything to find it would help to have an idea of his age.
I guess shortly after 1920.

RootsChat has a no living or possibly living person policy so we shouldn't even be discussing him here.
I don't see a death up to 1965 in Roscrea and he could still be living but if not a death notice in a newspaper might be your best bet, more recent ones are usually online but for earlier this site can be useful https://www.irishnewsarchive.com/ they do a 24 hour sub for €10.

Among those to enlist were six sons of John and Jane Nixon of Parkmore.  Robert, John, Joseph, George, Adam and James joined the Leinster Regiment which was based in Crinkill Barracks, Birr which was where most local volunteers signed up.
Nineteen-year-old Lance Corporal Adam, the youngest of the boys, was killed in action on August 18th 1915, his body was never found and his name is inscribed on the Helles Memorial near Sedd el Bahr in Turkey.  James who was also a Lance Corporal was 25 years old when he died of wounds received in the second battle of Ypres and is buried in Bedford House Cemetery in Belgium.

I know. My apologies for hijacking the thread to look for a (potentially) living person, but it's been really helpful seeing past family history too.

I'll get on to the link above later on. My only problem is that my Grandfather may or may not have moved back to the UK (although the last known address is in Roscrea). So he may or may not have died in the UK too.

As you've said, the name is pretty common, but I've been blown away by the help people have given here in such a short time. I really didn't expect this.

Welcome to RootsChat, Roger  :)

Joseph Nixon was my Grandfather, He retired to Sidley, Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex. Married to Elizabeth Leonard of Roscrea.

Firstly, see reply #11 for the 1901 and 1911 censuses for your family ancestors.

You probably have this, but for others here's the marriage record for your grandparents.
Married in Ballyclough CoI, Castlemagner parish, Co Cork. Looks like Thomas, his brother was one of the witnesses. Elizabeth from Waterloo, Mallow.
