Title: Birth/Baptism LU Request: Clare c. 1810 - GUEST
Post by: Aulus on Monday 04 February 08 18:46 GMT (UK)
I found a Frederick W Guest born c. 1810 in Clare, Suffolk on the 1851 census (HO107/1619; Folio: 397; Page: 34).  I think I spotted him on the 1841 too, but didn't note that down.

On both his profession is a chemist, which makes me wonder if there's a connection to some of my Guests.  That and the fact that there aren't that many Guests in Suffolk, and that some of my Guests were in Clare not too far off 1810.

I can't find Frederick W Guest's birth (or indeed his marriage to someone called Matilda) on the IGI, so I wonder if some kind soul might be able to look up the Clare parish registers for me and see if you can spot him and who his parents might have been.

Thanks ever so much.

Taken form Clare registers.

That's brilliant Sue, thanks ever so much.

How nice of the Clare vicar to include mother's maiden names!

He's definitely my lot.  Charles and Susannah are my great x 4 grandparents.  So this is yet another child for the old scoundrel Charles.  A previously unknown eldest son.  Wonder where on earth he got the names Frederick William from?  They are very definitely not Guest family names.  Next step is to find when and where Frederick married Matilda.

This brings his father, Charles, up to at least 14 children  (3 with the first wife, Ann Cansdale, 9 with the second wife Susannah Ince, one bastard daughter with Frances Barthrop and one bastard daughter with Ann Bridges).  Overseer, churchwarden, schoolmaster, officer in the militia, fourteen children with four different women ...  He liked to keep busy ...  ;)

I can't help but feel there are likely to be more out there.  If anyone spots any Guests in Suffolk 1750-1850, please let me know, as I think they're more than likely to be mine!

He sounds he was quite a feller, certainly didn't lead a dull life.  ;D ;D

Don't know if you have this, found it on Boyds marriage index.

Have you got any burials for Guests in Suffolk?

Thanks yes.  I think I've got all the vital bmd data for Charles, his parents and his wives.

Definitely a colourful character.  Seems he was twice bankrupted (unless he wriggled out of the first one).  The Bury R.O. has a series of fabulous letters he wrote to various officials of the Fornham St Martin parish where he weedling his way out of paying his debts, playing the officials off against each other, promising the cheque's in the post etc, plus the records of when he was overseer and churchwarden in F.S.M.  - including a substantial bar bill run up at the Angel in Bury!

Burials?  Yes, I've got some, possibly not all though.  It's becoming fairly clear that Guests in Suffolk are mine - I've yet to find one that's not related, and the result of Ralph Guest moving to Bury in 1768 (from Broseley, Shropshire via London)

Ralph Guest (Chas' father) is buried17/6/1830 at BSE, St Mary's
Sarah Guest née Prick (Chas' mother) is buried 22/11/1789 at Bury, St Mary's
Charles himself died in Waltham Cross, Herts 28/11/1855
George Guest (the apparently acclaimed organist at Wisbech) is Charles' brother and is buried in Wisbech.
Frances Guest (Charles' sister) was born 23 May 1774, bapt. 17 Apr 1775 in Bury, but then disappears entirely (as far as I've looked anyway)
John Guest (another brother of Charles) born 6 Apr 1776 Bury, bapt 26 Dec 1776 Bury, and I've not yet traced him beyond that.  Apparently a music teacher in Bury?
Possibly Jane Mary Guest, who marries Abraham Allen Miles in London 29 Aug 1789 is another child of Ralph and Sarah Guest, but I've not tracked down her birth/baptism yet.

Most of Charles' children who survived into adulthood seem to have left Suffolk.
Not sure what happens to the two illegitimate daughters, unknown Barthrop (b. 14 Jul 1811 according to the affiliation order), and Priscilla Bridges (bapt 3/3/1822 in F.S.M.)

Don't know why I didn't spot these before, but the images are pretty poor. Again from Clare PRs.
