Hi I am looking for information on a Benjamin Stewart his brother Samuel, sister Elizabeth Duffin, brother in law Hugh Duffin and their family.
I have been able to find their records in the 1906 and 1911 census but would like to find out any other information about them.
I would love to know how they came from Ireland to Canada. Also the dates of death and where.
I know form the 1911 census that they lived in Saskatchewan / Moosejaw/34 township 20 if anyone knows where that is. I also know from other information they had a homestead at Central Butte in Saskatchewan. Are they the same place?
I know its a long shot but if anyone can help.
Thanks
John

Hi
www.ancestorsonboard.com
Hugh Duffin left Londonderry in 1905 for Halifax Canada. A female Duffin aged 22 is also listed
DUFFIN 22 F 1905 Londonderry Canada Halifax
DUFFIN Hugh M 1905 Londonderry Canada Halifax
You have to pay to view the full record
There are a couple of Samuel/Benjamin Stewart entries so you may want to have a look

http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=2882589
- info on the Hugh and Elizabeth Duffin family, and Elizabeth's brothers Benjamin and Stewart. Says Benjamin died in 1928 in NZ while visiting his brothers ('Lil' appears to have been his wife's name) and that Samuel was struck dead by lightning and his wife (Casey McArthur) and young daughter (Jean) moved to Calgary (no date given).
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=2882794
- gives Sam's wife's name as 'Cassie McArthur'.
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=1034258
- mentions the death in 1925 of 'Granddad McDougall', one of his daughters was 'Mrs Ben Stewart'.
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=1033938
mentions Billy McArthur, his mother and his sister Cassie (married Sam Stewart), his brother Hugh came later (died in the war).
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=1034106
- another mention of Sam's death.

hi
Thanks carole and jorose for the information.
Jorose your information has really helped me put a lot of pieces together. I knew that Sam was killed by lighting, now i know the story behind it. I did not know the Ben died in New Zealand so a new search for me to under take.
Carole your information I had already seen on www.ancestorsonboard.com. I now know that Elizabeth and Hugh junior travelled in 1905. Hugh Senior the Year before.
Thanks for your help keep up the good work.

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=144951
Hugh came in 1904, Wife Elizabeth came in 1905 with eldest son Hugh...
Samuel came in 1905 & Benjamin 1n 1903
http://www.saskhomesteads.com/results.asp
117673A Duffin, Hugh NW 22 21 4 W3
1680993 Duffin, Hugh SW 27 21 4 W3
I think the second were the MooseJaw numbers behind him on on the census Image
The one for Benjamin says SW 21. 21. but this is the nearest to that...so if middle name was white this is his, and there's others for a Benjamin
115829A Stewart, Benjamin White SW 22 21 4 W3
and the 1901 entry for Samuel said SW 21.21. as well, but again if middle name was McCloy...there's another for him as well...
117675A Stewart, Samuel McLoy SE 22 21 4 W3
to use database, just put surname first, with comma, space, forname

Hugh Duffin and his wife Margaret Florence came from Carncastle, Co Antrim (now Northern Ireland). I think he was born in 1879, and it would have been a brave step tp sail off to Canada. I understand, from family chat, that he was granted farmland on the basis that he constructed his own cabin and worked the land successfully. After a period of years he had options to increase his holding and was successful in accruing a large farm in this way. Eight children came along - I think Hugh junior was born in Ireland.
His brother James, my grandfather, stayed at home (although family chat says he went to Canada for ten months to see for himself but decided against a permanent change) and also became a successful farmer, being able to buy a farm in Kilwaughter (not far from Carncastle) under the Irish Lands Act which gave the right to tenant farmers to purchase their farms using a government mortgage.
