My gggGrandmother Elizabeth Perkins was born in approx. 1812 in Wokingham she married Thomas Bedford 12/10/1837 in Wokingham and died in 1885 again in Wokingham her father's name was Thomas her mother's name was Elizabeth and came from Sherbourne Dorset and was born in approx. 1791.
Would anybody have anymore information on Elizabeth's parents such as when Thomas was born and Elizabeth's maiden name.
-
Hi,
If you don't mind me asking why do you think Elizabeth's mother is Elizabeth from Sherbourne Dorset?
I have found these two christenings on the IGI,
Elizabeth PERKINS
Christening: 07 JUL 1805 Wokingham, Berkshire
Father: Thomas PERKINS
Mother: Elizabeth
Elizabeth PERKINS
Christening: 17 MAR 1811 Wokingham, Berkshire
Father: Thomas PERKINS
Mother: Catherina
Elizabeth BEDFORD consistently says she was born 1809-1812 so I would think the earlier Elizabeth is the wrong one. If the later Elizabeth could be correct then this looks like her mother Catherine,
Catharine EELS
Christening: 12 FEB 1786 Hawley, Hampshire
Father: William EELS
Mother: Hannah
Thomas PERKINS
Spouse: Catherine ELES
Marriage: 03 MAY 1810 Wokingham, Berkshire
In 1841 it looks like Elizabeth & Thomas BEDFORD's son William is living/staying with Grandma :)

Hi Daisy
I'm sure your facts are correct.
I found an Elizabeth Perkins in the 1851-61 census who was a widow and seemed to fit the bill.
I was jumping to conclusions.
But you must be correct because William the grandson of Catherine is back with his family in the 1851 census age 12 and living on Peach St.
Incidentally on the 1841 census Catherine's husband Thomas is the last name on the previous page.
Thank you for all the information i am very grateful.

The Perkins family were fairly significant in Wokingham in the second half of the 19th century.
One ran the Old Curiosity Shop in Denmark Street in 1880. By 1900 his sons were running theWokingham Motor and Cycle Works in the Market Place and Peach Street. Later they ran the garage in Broad Street.
In 1937 Frank Stanley Perkins was mayor of Wokingham.
These may of course not be your family but it seemed worth posting the information.

Hi David
Thank you for the information.
Some of my ancestors whether Perkins or Bedford lived on Peach St. through out the 1800's.

Buzz

If you wanty more just say. One of their descendants used to live next door to me. The two brothers who ran the motor and cycle works were Alan Perkins and Eric Perkins .
I live about a mile from the centre of Wokingham and many of the buildings haven't changed in the last 100 years.
David
-
Hi David
Thank you for your offer.
The Perkins that i'm trying to find more information on is Thomas who in the 1841 census is as Daisy points out living on Peach St. age 55 so he was born approx. 1786 in the county.
Daisy states when he married.
And i believe he died Sept. 1/4 1847 in Wokingham.
If you have any more information on Thomas or his ancestors i would be very grateful.

Sorry,
I am failing to get back to the middle of the 19th century with the Perkins' history in Wokingham. I have found that some of the family were in Tasmania for a period and I can't get back beyond that block. It is not helped by the fact that I can't get any accurate dates.
David

Hi David
Thank you for your reply.
I'd never heard in the family that someone may have travelled to Tasmania.

Hi,
Excuse me for butting in but to my knowledge, Herbert Howard Perkins (1851-1928), father of Stanley, Eric and Alan etc, came from Tasmania. He and his wife, Emily are buried in St. Paul's Churchyard with one of their sons, Walter.

I thought that either Herbert Howard or his parents were born in the Wokingham area and then went out to Tasmania. Unfortunately my neighbour who was a member of the family died a number of years ago and so I have no way of checking.
David
-
Hi to both of you
Perhaps Herbert's parents and Thomas were cousins (or brothers) as it seems they may have both come from Wokingham I need to trace Thomas's parents.
Thank you both for your information.

Howard Perkins in his notes on the family in volume10 of the Wokingham Historian confirms that Howard Heard Perkins sailed for Hobart in Tasmania two years after the birth of his son Herbert Howard Perkins to join an uncle in a grocery business called "Perkins and Nephew".
They came back after about three years with a further son Eric Heard Perkins who was born in Tasmania.
There are further articles about the family in volumes 8 and 11 written by members of the family.
David
-
This is true but if you look up the censuses Herbert Howard gives his birthplace as being Tasmania.
Regards
Fletcherhist
-
I agree that in 1881 he gives his birth place as Tasmania but in 1891 and 1901 it is Berkshire England. I can only access the indexes at the moment and so I can't see the actual town, nether can I find him in earlier census.
David
-
According to Ancestry.com Herbert H Perkins gives his place of birth in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 as being Tasmania. There is no reference to him in earlier censuses which could mean that he was in Tasmania during this period. Moreover, he went out there in 1879/80 with his family apparently to join a nephew in a grocery business, which strengthens the possibility that he was born in Tasmania.
According to the birth records in Ancestry.com only one Herbert Perkins was born in the years 1850, 1851 and 1852. Usually if there is a middle name, the initial of the middle name is quoted in the entry. This one only states 'Herbert Perkins'.
Fletcherhist
.
-
Sorry I misread the 1891 and 1901 indexes. You are right. However the other possibility should be considered which is that if he went out there at the age of two he might have thought that he was born in Tasmania.
I will back out of this discussion because I have no primary evidence to substantiate the views that I am presenting.

Hello all
I was just showing a friend of mine the 'joys' of the internet earlier today and I thought it would be a great idea to Google his grandfather's name. I did and came up with the posting on Elizabeth Perkins of Wokingham.
Further on in the postings we saw reference to a 40 page history of the Perkins family by a Howard Perkins.
Just so happens that my friend wrote that history. He is Howard Grenville Perkins, born 20 July 1916. His father was Eric Heard Perkins, born 23 May 1879 in Melbourne. Howard lives near me in the Salisbury area and would be quite happy to be in touch with any member of his family. He does not have a PC. Howard's grandfather was Herbert Howard Perkins (1857-1928), who married Emily Colbourn in Melbourne on 31 December 1876. Their eldest son was Herbert Lindsey (1847-1967), with Eric number 2 in the line.
Howard's uncle Frank (1888-1953) was the main player in the family cycle business in Wokingham, later Mayor of Wokingham.
If any of the above is of interest to anyone please get back to me.

Hallo David
Good to hear of Howard. Just one thing on the dates that were given, Howard's uncle Herbert's year of birth must be wrong - should it be 77 not 47?
I was hoping we could work out where our ancestors join up. I am a direct descendant of Elizabeth Perkins through her son Charles Bedford who left Wokingham somewhere between 1861 and 1868 when he married Mary Ann Goldsbrough in Clerkenwell, London.
Howard cannot be a direct descendant from Elizabeth but perhaps from her parents who were Thomas Perkins who was baptised on 18.5.1787. in Wokingham and married on 3.5.1810. to Catherine Eles, also in Wokingham. The only thing I know of Thomas is that his parents were Thomas and Elizabeth but I have no other details.
As you will see from the first postings on this site, some of the details were wrong and Daisy has corrected them.
Can Howard go any further back than his grandfather Herbert who I take it was born in Wokingham?
It would be good to hear from Howard with any details he has.

you are quite right, 1877, not 1857 for Herbert Lindsay's birth.
I have researched two of Howard's lines, but not Perkins beyond Herbert Howard. All Howard has is a drop line tree drawn up my a family member at some stage, with Herbert Howard at the top. I am not too sure as to its accuracy as it gives Herbert Howard's birth as 1857, but he states he was 39 in the 1891 census.
I managed to find the birth reference to Herbert Howard in Tasmania in 1851. Unless you or someone else has already seen his birth record, or has researched this part of the Perkins family, I cannot go beyond Herbert Howard without obtaining the certificate.
Have you researched any of the Perkins and, if so, is there any way of getting a Gedcom file of the family? Or do you have any other information that link's Howard Herbert with Elizabeth?

Hi David,
I have written two booklets about former Mayors of Wokingham. The part about Frank :
may be of interest:
Fletcherhist
Frank Stanley Perkins (1888-1953)
Civic Career:
November 1919: unsuccessful—6th with 161 votes; November 1921: elected Councillor unopposed; November 1924: elected Councillor—3rd with 484 votes; November 1927: re-elected Councillor—5th with 542 votes; November 1930: elected Councillor unopposed; November 1933: re-elected Councillor—5th with 1,231 votes; November 1936: re-elected Councillor—5th with 1,061 votes; November 1937: elected Mayor and Chairman of the Rating Committee; July 1943: elected Alderman; 1945: re-elected Alderman; 1952: elected Alderman and County Councillor for Wokingham.
Frank was a native of Wokingham and one of a large family of six brothers and three sisters. His father, Herbert Howard Perkins (b. 1852) came to Wokingham from Tasmania and married Emily (1852-1908). Frank was educated at the Old British School in Wokingham and later, privately, by Mr. H. C. Byard.
In his early career Frank was a clerk at the offices of Messrs. Cooke, Cooper and Barry under the supervision of Albert Priest. He later became interested in the cinema and took up the position of assistant manager at a theatre in Bath.
At the outbreak of the First World War Frank joined the French army in which he saw active service. After the armistice he returned to Wokingham and, with his brother Eric, founded a garage in Broad Street and traded as the Perkins Brothers. Later Frank carried on the business with the assistance of his younger brother Alan (b. 1889) who also designed pantechnicans. These were manufactured by a company in Reading. A number of these vehicles were purchased by Reeves Removals. In later life, Frank was also director of The Centre Garage, Eversely, Ltd.
Eric opened a cycle shop in Peach Street assisted by his father, Herbert who was in charge of the workshop and repairs.
In 1916 Frank married Mabel Louise Glover at Christchurch, Reading by whom he had a son and two daughters, Barbara Mabel (b. 1917), Marion Frances (b. 1921) and Buzz, who went to New Zealand.
As a member of the Berkshire Education Committee, Frank represented the authority of the governing bodies of the Easthampstead Park Training College and the East Berks College for Further Education, Windsor. He was also a governor of the Wokingham County Girls’ School.
A Freemason for many years, Frank was a Past Worshipful Master of the Guelph Lodge of Freemasons.
Frank was an accomplished musician and was organist and choirmaster at Wokingham Baptist Church. He was also associated with Crowthorne Methodist Church in a similar capacity.
An enthusiastic sportsman, Frank was at home on the hockey pitch, tennis court, bowling green and billiards table. He served as honorary secretary and treasurer of the Wokingham Excelsior Cricket Club; associated honorary secretary of the Wokingham Hockey Club; secretary of the Wokingham Sports Ground and chairman, vice-president and, from time to time, referee. of the Wokingham Town Football Club. He was also a shareholder of the Reading Football Club.
Frank died suddenly at the age of 65 from heart failure at his home, 41, Broad Street, on the evening of Monday 10th August 1953. His funeral service was held at All Saints’ Church. Perkins Way was named in his memory.

So, according to the extract from the booklet by Fletcherhist, Herbert Howard Perkins was born in Tasmania.
Does this mean that Tasmania is where Herbert's ancestors came from and he just happened to arrive at a village in England which had inhabitants who just happened to have the same surname, albeit quite a common surname.
Buzz
-
It is fairly certain that Herbert's ancetors came from Wokingham to which they later returned. The question to be answered is whther he was born before or after they sailed for Hobart.
Incidently I am still in contact with the widow of John Perkins who used to live next door to me. I am not sure which of the brothers was his father.
David
-
Hope you dont mind me butting in.
I've been researching the Perkins clan of Wokingham.
This is what i've come up with:
The Colonial Tasmanian Family Links Database (availiable online) shows that Herbert Howard Perkins was born in Tasmania in 1851. He has 10 siblings all born in Tasmania between 1841 - 1859.
His parents are John Perkins (b 1812 whereabouts unknown, d 1877 in Hobart, Tasmania), and Emmily Frances Watchorn b 1821, Stepney London, d 1863 in Hobart, Tasmania).
Emily's parents are William Watchorn (b 1797) and Susannah Eliza Perkins (b 1798, England).
John Perkins was an MP in the Tasmanian gov for a short time, as was one of his son's William Watchorn Perkins. John and Emmilys eldest child, Emily Jean Perkins married William Robert Giblin, who later became the 13th Premier of Tasmania. This might explain the interest in politics of Frank Stanley Perkins back in Wokingham.
If you look at a picture of 'Perkins and Nephew' Emporium in Hobart you can see the word 'Wartchorn' in stone above the shop. This is the site of an original shop owned by a Mr Watchorn.
Hope this is of interest and makes some sense.
-
This is very interesting thank you. Every piece of the jigsaw is important. You mentioned a photograph. Could you possibly send a copy over?
Thanks a lot
Fletcherhist
-
There are infact several photos to be viewed.
The Archives Office of Tasmania (www.tas.gov.au) has got a photo (about 1881) of 'Perkins and Nephew' which stood on Liverpool Street, Hobart. There is another very clear one on UTas eprints, which shows workers standing outside the shop and I guess members of the Perkins family. One very important man appears in a top hat. The Watchorn sign above the shop is very clear.
I found a newpaper article on-line, but failed to save the web site, showing that the shop was originally called Wellington Stores and was indeed owned by William Watchorn. It was estabished in 1826. It was an advert listing all of the new products that they had in stock.
There are also photos of John Perkins and William Watchorn Perkins on tas.gov.au. The origin of John Perkins is a mystery. However there are several John Perkins migrating to Tasmania on convict ships, any which of whom may be the right one. Equally, he may not have been a convict.
I also found WWI sign up papers for Alan Horwrd Perkins to the Australian Military on 'Mapping our Anzacs'. he must have been in Australia himself during WWI in 1915. He occupation shows he is in the motor trade in Wokingham and his father as Herbert Howard Perkins also in Wokingham.
Happy hunting

Hi Flethcerhist
Just wondering how you are getting on. Did ou find those websites? Do you think it is the right family line or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Have you found any more interesting facts?

Hi Perks1,
Apologies for taking so long to reply but time goes too quickly these days. I accessed the website and found the photographs. Unfortunately I have been diverted by other local history work and have had to put Perkins on the backburner for a while. However I have noted everything you have given me and will return to it in the near future.
The maintenance team at St. Paul's Church has a new supervisor and work on the eastern section has uncovered the graves of Herbert Howard Perkins born Oct 31st 1851 died Oct 2nd 1928; Emily Perkins born Nov 20th 1851 died July 29th 1908 and Walter M Perkins born Dec 6th 1882 died Dec 13th 1909. The graves are surrounded by four kerbstones and until now had been hidden by weeds and long grass.
Thanks a lot for all the information. Please don't give up on me.
Regards,
Fletcherhist
-
Hi Fletcherhist
Good to hear from you. I know how easy it is to get diverted. Thanks for those dates. They are very useful. I only had estimates.
One thing I really want to work out at some point is what made Emily Colbourn go out to Tasmania. There must be some sort of family link. I'm wondering if she has links with the Watchorns and thier cousins the Chapmans who all lived in the same area (whitechapel) of London and all miragrated to Tasmania en mass in about 1825. As you know, Emily ended up out there in the 1870s and then marries Herbert Howard Perkins. I wonder what took her over there?
I wish there was a magic asnwer to it all,

Hi Perks1,
The Perkins' magnet has drawn me back to the family tree.
I have just been re-reading the "Notes on Wokingham and the Perkins Family" by Howard Perkins and I find the beginning to be a trifle ambiguous.
For example Howard begins by saying that his grandfather was Howard Heard Perkins. Surely if Howard is the son of Eric Heard (b. 1880) who is the son of Herbert Howard (1851-1928) then Howard Heard is Howard's great grandfather? It is Herbert Howard who is buried in St. Paul's churchyard and not Howard Heard.
The second paragraph begins, "Two years after he had his first son - Herbert Howard - he and the family sailed to Hobart Town, Tasmania.
The thirds paragraph begins, "My father, Eric Heard Perkins was born soon after they arrived in Tasmania". If Herbert Howard is Eric's father, it must have been quite a long voyage!
Would you be so kind as to supply a few dates of death of Eric Heard Perkins and his siblings. Do you know if Howard is still alive and if so is he contactable?
Happy New Year when it comes.
Fletcherhist
-
Hi Fletherhist
Wow - that's torn it. We will have to have another look at this again.
I did read somewhere on rootschat (an archived section from someone researching the Chapman family who are 'cousins' of the Perkins - think they married into the Watchorns and also went to Tasmania from London) that Eric Heard Perkins spent some time himself in back in Tasmania (Eric Heard Perkins was born in Tasmania and then came to England with his father Herbert Howard Perkins in about 1880). I'm guessing that Eric went back with his family for a while - maybe he had a son called Howard. It all very confussing!
My tree shows Howard Herbert Perkins (b1851 Hobart - d 1928 wokingham)
His children are:
Herbert Lindsay Perkins (b 1877 Hobart - think he died 1967 - England)
Eric Heard Perkins (b 1879 Hobart)
Cecil Henry Perkins (b 1881 Forest Gate, Essex)
Walter Montague Perkins (b 1882 Wrotham Heath, Kent - d 1909 Preston, Brighton, Sussex)
Sybil Kathleen Perkins (b1886 Wokingham)
Clara Emily Perkins (b1886 Wrotham Heath, Kent)
Frank Stanley Perkins (b 1888 Wokingham - d 1953)
Alan Howard Perkins (b1889 Wokingham)
Frances Mary Perkins (1895 Wokingham)
I will do a bit more research and see what I can tie up at my end
Happy New Year - Perks1

Hi Fletcherhist
Me again. Have just done a quick bit of checking and found two children for Eric Heard Perkins:

Cynthia M Perkins b 1921 - Wokingham
That would tie in. Perhaps Eric took his family to Tasmania soon after the birth of Cynthia.

Hope you don't mind me butting in on your Perkins chat...
But I can help you out with Tasmanian references if you want them.

Hello Merlin
Your help would be much apprieciated!!
I don't know what info you can provide but here's a wish list.
Can you find out if Eric Heard Perkins was in Tasmania around 1922 onwards with his wife Eveline May Perkins and Children Howard Perkins and Cynthia M Perkins. Did they have an children in Australia?
Also can you trace a John Perkins b 1812 as the father of Herbert Howard Perkins. I dont know where he was born. He may have been born in Tasmania or emigrated there. Its a mystery. I would love to know where he came from, who his parents were and if he had any siblings. He was a politician. One of his children was a politian too William Watchorn Perkins.
Also can you tell how long Alan Howard Perkins was in Australia. He was born 1889 in Wokingham, Berkshire. He was definatly in Australia during WW1 as I have found his army enrollement forms in Queensland online dated 1915. I don't know how long he was there and where he lived. He may have been with relatives but I don't know who. He's not on the UK 1911 census.
Any info would be fantastic. Hope thats not all to much.

Hi Merlin,
There is some controversy over the birth date of Herbert Lindsay. Among the Chat messages someone said:
"Their eldest son was Herbert Lindsey (1847-1967), with Eric number 2 in the line. "
In another message someone else said:
"you are quite right, 1877, not 1857 for Herbert Lindsay's birth."
Any ideas?
Fletcherhist
-
Hi flethcherhist,
It would be impossible for Herbert Lindsay to be born in 1857, his father Herbert Howard would have only been 6 years old & wasn't married until 1876!...lol
So, whoever said 1857 obviously made a HUGE mistake...
If you look at my post #55 you will have your answers, these are the from the official government records I own a copy of the indexes & copies of the certificates are available on microfilm also.

Hi Merlin
If you are up for more questions, I was wondering if you were able to confirm the children of William Watchorn Perkins. I believe that one of them might be called Augusta Clementina Frances Perkins and marries a Joseph Francis Boultbee in about 1901. Think there is also a Charles Morice (1886), Colin Henry (1887), Kenneth Winter (1889), David Warrender (1893), and Lawrence Winter (1893). Think that there may be 2 other daughters.
Also can you trace a Susannah Eliza Perkins (b 1797 London, d 1855 - Hobart) as wife of William Watchorn (1797 London - d 1854 Hobart). As was probably usual, there seems to be a lot of inter family marriage. I'm trying to see if I can link in John Perkins (1812-1877) as a family member to Susannah Eliza Perkins. Maybe a brother or nephew. Just guessing but it's all very tantalising with the same surnames popping up on both sides of the tree.
Please don't feel under presure - only if you have the time and fancy the challenge,
Regards
Perks1.
-
Hi Perks1,
I'll see what I can find for you... I think I will have to jump back & forth between TAS, VIC (AUS) & NZ for William Watchorn & his family.

Hi Merlin,
If you ever have any spare time could you find out when Herbert Howard returned to England as the Wokingham directories don't list him until 1887.
Thanks a lot,
Jim
-
Hi fletherhist,
There are very few passenger departure lists, the reason being is back then they didn't care who was leaving only entering the country, usually the country they were arriving in kept copies of their arrivals.
I will look at what departure lists are available for you anyway, but I would suggest checking the UK end also!
However, seeing that Eric Howard was born 23/05/1879 in TAS & Cecil Henry was born 1881 in the UK it would seem there is only a small time frame of mid 1879 to 1881.
-
Hi fletcherhist,
You were lucky!
They appear on the outward passenger list leaving from Victoria, so they would have left Tasmania on a smaller ship & landed & VIC to board for their passage to the UK.

MARRIAGE of William Watchorn Perkins
William Watchorn Perkins born Hobart, TAS, AUS married Eliza Jane Winter 1870 in New Zealand. She was born in the USA, so I assume her parents emigrated to NZ.
Here are the reg details from NZ indexes:
1870/6801 Jane Eliza Winter William Walthorn Perkins
NZ indexes don't give much details, they are sadly lagging behind most other countries when it comes to FH data!

Merlin
Once again this is all fantastic info.
I have one further question for now. I am really interested in what takes Emily Colbourn out to Tasmania. I havent found a reason so far why she would go by herself from London in her early 20s. As you know she marries Herbert Howard Perkins in Dec 1878 to return to London in Dec 1880. You said that the authorities were more interested in who arrived rather than who left. Is it possible to find records of her arriving in Tasmania between 1871-1877. Also iI wonder if she travelled to Tasmania alone or with others. There may be some clues in the passenger lists. If you find her, who are the other listed with her? Are there any Colbourn's, Brown's, Watchorn's or Chapman's? If not an other names next to her may be a clue.
Sorry to keep throwing things at you. I'll slow down now as normal life returns after xmas - kids back to school, me back to work etc.
Many Thanks Perks1
-
Actually from the index they were married 1876...
Do you have anything on her prior to the marriage?
Parents, siblings, where she was from in the UK?
-
Hi Merlin
Sorry - Yes.
Emily Colbourn: Born 1851 Stepney, London.
Father: William Colbourn (1816 Peckham, London -1860 Stepney, London)
Mother: Harriet Brown Heard (1826 Northam, Devon - 1864 Poplar, London)
They marry 30 Sept 1845, St Dunstans, Stepney.
Siblings:
Henry Colbourn (b 1846), William Osmund Colbourn (b1849) , Edwin Colbourn (b1850), Harriet Colbourn (b1853), Clara Heard Colbourn (b1854), John Colbourn (1856), Tobias Colbourn (b1857).
After the death of William Colbourn, Harriet remarries to:
William Goodey on 18 Aug 1862 at All Saints Church, Poplar, London.
These families all come from the same part of London, so I'm just guessing that some of them may know each other or be related, giving Emily Colbourn a reason to travel to Tasmania after the death of both her parents.
Hope thats enough to go on. Thanks Perks1.
-
Found her arriving...by herself...on Christmas Day!
Then she was married before the end of the month...!!!...WOW...!!!
Emily Colbourn age 24 arrived 25 Dec 1876 Port Phillip Bay, from London aboard the Sobraon.
-
Found her brother & sister arriving together 2 years later...
Edwin Colbourn age 28 and Harriett Colbourn age 22 arrived 7 Jul 1878, Melbourne from Gravesend aboard the Kent
-
Wow - that is amazing! How did they manage that!!
I have to say you have been such a huge help. I am so very grateful.
Thanks Perks1.
-
I wonder if Herbert had taken a voyage to England & met her?
An arranged marriage through family?
Just hard to swallow that she arrives 25th Dec & is married within 6 days!!!
-
Oh- forgot to say that she arrived at Victoria & their marriage WAS IN Victoria NOT Tasmania.
It seems he would have had to be there & waiting for her!
Still trying to get my head around this one :D
-
Merlin
Yes it like nothing else I've heard of. As you say - they may have met before otherwise it was a real whirlwind romance!!
Just for your interest - I've just checked on Edwin and Harriet Colbourn and think that she is Edwins wife as he marries a Harriet Rose Matthews in Apr 1878. Harriet Colbourn (the sister) died in 1854 aged 1.
Thanks
Perks1
-
Yes, I saw the age for Harriet was out by a year or two but passenger lists are so often full of lies when it comes to passengers ages you just never know!
Have you found her other siblings still in England?

Perks1 & Fletcherhist,
Found more Chapmans arriving earlier than 1825...
Isaac Chapman father of the above & others.
I'll look the cards up for you when I have some more spare time.
And Perks1, I think that your John Perkins might be a younger brother to Susannah Eliza unless she had a much older brother & then possibly a nephew...

Merlin and Fletcherhist
Yet again! I just grin with excitement every time I log on. I just cant believe all this things you are sending us, Merlin. I've been searching for ages and failed to come up with any real evidence - just ideas that I can't prove. However, its all making sense now. Thankyou.
I did find a while back some birth records for both John Perkins and Susannah Eliza Perkins which seemed to show they may be brother and sister but wasn't at all sure because the Tasmanian Family Links database, which has limited info on it, said he was born in Wales and gave nothing much for Susannah Eliza either. However, I couldn't find a John Perkins born in Wales at the right time only the one in London.
I'll have to try to find it again and post it for you both.
Perks1 (with a very happy face).
-
Hi Perks1,
As to the 'Tasmanian Family Links database' take care with them:
Except where indicated by '(AO)', the family links in the database have not been made by the Archives Office and are not therefore able to guarantee their accuracy. Links made by the National Heritage Foundation have been built up from a diverse range of sources which have not themselves been checked.
So, if you find something ask if I can verify it from 'Official Records'.
-
Oh! - And another thing you can purchase an image copy of Emily Colbourn & Herbert Perkins - Victorian marriage certificate online for a payment of $17.50 AUD. It is instantly available to you for download to your computer.
It will give you information that maybe you are seeking, apart from their names, dob, where they live their occupations etc it also has parents names, occupations whether they are living or deceased, who married them & where, also names & signatures of the witnesses to the marriage
Here's the link:

Perks1 & Fletcherhist,
Here is somewhere you might like to spend some time, you will find a WEALTH of information on your families which can solve puzzles for you & they are free to download.
Tasmanian Wills & Letters of Administration from 1824-1989
Recently the TAHO have put COPIES OF WILLS (AD960) AND LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION (AD961) UP TO 1989 HAVE BEEN DIGITISED AND ARE NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE.
To view a digitised record, search the index by name and then click on the 'view record' link in the 'search results' screen. Only series AD960 and AD961 have been digitised.
The documents which have been digitised are not the originals. They are copies of the wills and letters of administration which were transcribed by Probate Registry staff into registers. In some cases the age, shades of colour and quality of ink make the documents difficult to read, even in their original form.

Perks1 & Fletcherhist,
Another place I have checked & found there are lots of references to your families that will keep you busy scouring them is the Historic Australian Newspapers, 1803 to 1954 available online & free also to download copies of anything you find.
I can see many BDM's, advertising & stories on the families in there.

Hi Merlin,
If you can spare five minutes could you help me with the following which has been a brick wall for a close friend for some time? If you are too busy just forget it.
She knows the family as Winbank but she believes that the name was changed when William came to Australia.
William WINBANK/WINDEBANK: born abt 1836 died 1914 in Wombat NSW Australia.
Married Catherine BARNES formerly OWEN in Sydney NSW.
She has not been able to find anything about when he arrived in Aust. or where he originated from. She thinks he may have gone to Aust at the age of 15 and that he didn't want to be found hence he changed his name and was very vague with any information regarding his past.
Thanks a lot

I have heaps of info I'd like to swap.
Susanna Eliza PERKINS (WATCHORN) & Eliza PERKINS (CHAPMAN) were sisters who came out to Hobart in 1826 on the "Phoenix" with their husbands & children, later both having many more children in Hobart.
Their father was (John) Bingley PERKINS, from St Neots in Huntingdonshire, by his second marriage to Elizabeth unknown. His first wife was Susanna CARELESS from Eynesbury. Some of those children died in St Neots.
Bingley was son of Elijah PERKINS & Ann DAY from St Mary's in Huntingdon who settled in St Neots in 1758.
Bingley had a surviving son John, but it is unknown whether he is anything to do with John PERKINS of Tassie b1812. It is supposed he (John) came from Wales ?? which could indicate why some of his children have Welsh sounding names.
Hows that for starters ?
Milton.
-
Great!
Perhaps you can provide the link between William Watchorn Perkins who married Eliza Jane Winter in 1870, and William who married Suzannah Eliza Perkins.
William and Suzannah were the grandparents of Herbert Howard Perkins.
Thanks,
Fletcherhist
-
Yes,
William Watchorn PERKINS mother was Emily Frances WATCHORN, William & Susanna's 2nd daughter.
There also was a polititian in Hobart at this time called John WATCHORN, but don't know the connection to William, nephew possibly.
PS, "Phoenix" arrived in 1825, not 1826. my mistake.
Cheers.
Milton.
-
Hi Milton,
Thanks for that. How far back can you go and how can I help you?
Fletcherhist

Hi Milton,
just to confirm-- am I correct in assuming that William Watchhorn Perkins who married Eliza Jane Winter and Herbert Howard Perkins were brothers? Sorry to appear so thick but I am still trying to get my head around this unflux of info.

Yes they were brothers.

Hello Merlin,
I wondered if you knew where I could get hold of the will for Isaac Chapman who died in Hobart in 1850.
I know one exists, but doesn't show up in the search portal from the Tasmanian archives.
His son Henry Chapman married Eliza Perkins, my GGGG Gparents.
Thank you.

Hi Guys
Think I must have been asleep or something - just picked up on all the new action. Hello to Frogg - glad you've joined the gang.
I'm really interested in the Perkins tree dating back to Elijah Perkins.
I have found a baptisimal record for a John Perkins in 1813 in Westmister London. Birth - 25 Sept 1813, Christening - 17 Oct 1813, Father - John Perkins, Mother - Martha.
Looking at the info you have provided Frogg i'm just wondering if this is John Perkins (1812-1877), and possibly we can guess at him being son of John Perkins, brother to Susannah Eliza and Eliza Perkins so nephew to Susannah Eliza and Eliza Perkins. It's a guess, but might explain why he goes to Tas. It means he marries his cousin (Emmely Frances Watchorn) which is nothing new. Who's Martha?
Will have a good look at all the new finds and hopefully not go back to sleep again, but got a big assessment on Friday so need to do some stuff on that before family tree!! (rather be doing this!)

The question marks mean just that....a possible connection, however the direct line back from Bingley Perkins is certain.
They were a family of Millwrights, Elijah's settlement papers to St Neots in 1758, & William his brother settlement papers to Godmanchester in 1765., both from St Mary's.
We couldn't find William & Dinah's marriage....still more work to do.
I don't think John Perkins born 1812 is son of Eliza & Susanna's brother, their brother was born in 1794, & would be too young if he survived at all.
But there are plenty more Johns in this extended family from which he could be descended.
Cheers.
Milton.

Hi Milton and all,
This is all good stuff.

This lists all the mayors of Huntington showing:
Henry Perkins - Mayor 1917, 1918
John Perkins - Mayor 1786, 1790, 1802
There are also mentions of the DAY family, Captain William A Montagu and the Earl of Sandwich. The 'Sandwich' family name is Montagu. We have Walter Montagu Perkins in the tree - son of Herbert Howard Perkins. Just a thought!
Also found on Google Books:
An article in the New Monthly Magazine, 1814 on Huntingdon reading:
'Died - At Huntingdon, of croup, Mrs Wetherall, 38 - Mary, wife of Wm. Herbert Esq and second daughter of John Perkins, esq formerly a banker at Huntingdon.
Just wondering if this Perkins lot in Huntingdon may be of some influence.

Tis I, frogg,
I noticed John Perkins born 1812-d1877 was John jnr..!! So we know his father was John.

Could it be that he was the son of Elijah's brother John, who may have married Mary unknown? The IGI's aren't very comprehensive for Huntingdon.

Hi All,
Thanks for that info Milton.
I was assuming that John Perkins jnr is John Melford Perkins (b1855) son of John Perkins (1812-1877). It would make make him Mayor when he was very young at about 22, but I was just going with it for now. There are articles from the australian newspaper archives (link above from Merlin) which show our ex mayor John Perkins jnr leaving on a trip to Europe on 5 Feb 1878. He first goes to an exhibition in Paris as a Tasmanian representative (although it appears that that decision wasn't made until after he left so he may not have known he was officially a representative) and then on to England to visit family. John Perkins (1812-1877) is already dead, so it cant be him. Progress reports of John Perkins jnr's travels are given to the council by Herbert Perkins. It would make sense that he would know about the travel progress of his brother.
This makes John Perkins (1812-1877) parentage still a mystery, but i'm surewe can work it out.
Need to have a good look at all this new info and try to match it up.

Newpaper article of John Perkins trip to Europe.

Hi all
Fletcherhist - i think you'll like this one.
From the newpaper archives link i've fround an article in 'The Mercury' on Wed 4 June 1873 showing a dinner held in rooms in Cannon Street, London. It was attended by a whole host of Tasmanians including Herbert Perkins, H Perkins (assumming Henry Alleine Perkins, Herbert's brother who was studying medicine at Edinburgh at the time - the article mentions him at Edinburgh to confirm it), also E. O. Giblin (their sister Emmely Jean Perkins had married William Robert Giblin in 1865, who was Attorney General of Tasmania at the time, later to beome Premier).
Is it during this visit that Herbert Perkins meets Emily Colbourn. If so, it means that them getting married 6 days after Emily arrives in Melbourne 3 years later not so odd.
Have tried to down load the article but it was too big so failed - my it skills are not up to those of Merlin.

I was going to advise that there is a PDF facility top left of the screen but it seems you got there first.
You're right. I could happily spend weeks going through these old issues. Have you tried the 'search' facility and read through the results in chronological order?
Hi Merlin.
Thanks for the offer but I managed to download.

Hi Gang,
You might be right there Perks, I didn't realize John Milford (or Melford) PERKINS became a political figure. His Grave shows "Milford" as does the Tassie archives.
Can't find much about him on the internet.
I had a sniff around on the weekend looking for possible family connections for John PERKINS (b1812) eligibility at being a Huntingdon PERKINS, I'm running into doubts, most Johns seem to be accounted for.
Back to Huntingdon again....I think our PERKINS from there did have influencial connections, I seem to recall Bingley being an Esquire, & certainly his daughters married into families with higher class connections....not that I'm into that sort of thing myself....but Eliza's son Henry John CHAPMAN married Sarah Christiana LEADER.....who herself was descended from Royal lineages via Anglo-Irish landed gentry.
The RIGNALLS who Frances PERKINS, (Elijah's sister) married made mention in the Gentlemans magazine from where I found their death dates. Hubby John RIGNALL was a Sexton & Bellman in Godmanchester. It seems some of the immediate family drifted to Godmanchester, where the name & even Elijah himself (in Huntingdon & St Neots) are quite often recorded as PARKINS.
Will keep searching.
Cheers.

Hi Milton
Do you have any info on the BINGLEY line? I've got nothing myself - just a middle name for John Bingley Perkins.
Perks1
-
I haven/t been able to find how the name BINGLEY got into the family.
There are not that many BINGLEY's in Huntingdonshire.
However other names crept into the family that weren't ancestral, eg, godparents, inlaws etc, like EYNON, HIDDLESTONE, WADSWORTH, on the CHAPMAN, side, WARRENDER etc on the WATCHORN side.
Cheers.
Milton.
-
Yo Perkins people,
Interesting stuff here relevant to PERKINS name.
Seems they are all related way back, there are families in Wales, Berkshire, & Leicester which must be ancestral to the PERKINS families mentioned in this thread.
I guess the Huntingdon crowd would descend from the Leics. mob, incidentally where there is a great abundance of BINGLEY's.

Hi all - I dont have anything particularly useful to add yet but I just thought I'd introduce myself, I'm Sally Reed (maiden name Evans) and I'm related to Eliza Perkins through her daughter Clara Chapman, who gave birth to my Great Grandfather Frederick W. Evans. I'm from Melbourne, Australia (my father is from Hobart but moved to Melbourne as a young man) but now reside in the UK.
I'm quite new to this family tree thing but I'm rather enjoying exercising my brain as I'm taking a bit of a career break to raise my family ;D
-
Hi Sally,
I'm descended from Clara's brother Henry John Chapman who came to New Zealand about 1863.
I don't have alot on Clara's descendants, but do have extensive info on the many other branches.
I can be contacted directly at frogg@igrin.co.nz I'd love to fill in some gaps.

Hi Sally
Glad you joined us!
As I mentioned on Ancestry, my hubbie is a Perkins through Susannah Eliza Perkins, Emmely Frances Watchorn, then Herbert Howard Perkins who ended up back in Wokingham, England.
Hope you pick up lots of interesting stuff from here!
Milton - did you pick up from the list of Hobart Mayors George Hiddlestone (mayor 1891, 1898)? Married into the Chapmans via George's father's (Robert) brother's (John) who married Jane Elizabeth Chapman. Sorry that not very well explained but I'm sure you've already got all that anyway. Have picked up censes records for them (George and parents) in Jarrow, Northumberland, England as late as 1851.

Yes, this is correct.
Jane Eliza & John had no issue themselves however.

Hi Guys
I know it's been a long time. Hope all is well.
Have just found an archive relating to Bingley Perkins on the following link. Nothing much but interesting.
http://blars.adlibsoft.com/beginner/indnms.html
http://www.bedfordshire.gov.uk/CommunityAndLiving/ArchivesAndRecordOffice/SearchOurCatalogues.aspx
If links fail just search for Archives and Records Service on www.bedfordshire.gov.uk
There are also lots relating to various John Perkins. With a little digging it may shed some light on the origins of John Perkins. One is a banker, who forms a partnership with Joseph Barnard and J Wing before 1803 which eventually became Royal Bank of Scotland.
Enjoy, Perks1.

BINGO!
John Perkins was born 1812 St David's, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Parents are Henry and Mary. He had 2 brothers Peter (married Margaret Griffiths) and Thomas who emigrated to Sydney in 1833.
Links that finally solve it:

From the last link it appears that there is a fictional book 'The Captains Wife' by Eiluned Lewis based on the story of John Perkins neice Martha. John Perkins is mentioned in the book as leaving for Tasmania in 1838. These are all based on real life people, as explained in the last link. It all fits in perfectly. I'm certain it is the same John Perkins. I must order a copy of the book and read it.
The Tasmanian Family Links database always had John Perkins birth place down as Wales - I just never believed it. Serves me right - would probably got to the bottom of it much sooner.
It would be amazing to get in touch with Sally Rackham who seems to have lots of information on the family in Pembrokeshire.

Hi
John Perkins was born at Llanvirn Farm, Berea, Pembrokshire - brothers appear to be Thomas (b 1805) Peter ( b 1806) and William (b1814). There must be more siblings, but they may remain a mystery.
Their parents are Henry (1778-1852) and Mary Williams (1785-1853). Have traced a copy of Henry's Will at Welsh National library (Ref SD1852-133) 1852, but wrong image is attatched so I need to get a paper copy.
Henry's parents: John Perkins (1747-1835) and catherine Meyler (1752-1834). All farmers in the area at eith er Llanvern (Llanvirn/Llan-fyrn) or Pyll Cearog Farm next door.
Parents of John Perkins: John Perkins (1697-1763) and Ann Meyler (1712-1781).
Have got in touch with decendant of William Perkins (1814-1887) who has a family bible and can confirm the family links.
I am really pleased to have at last found him out! The Meyler name is also confirmation. It's been really bugging me for ages!!

Good score Perks,

There is a member on Ancestry.com with John Perkins' brother (William 1814-1887), but not found anyone else so far. There are a few more perkins in the area but can't work out where or if they fit in - on the plus side there aren't that man in the area at the time so chances are they are all closely related.
However, the IGIs for St Davids are not that helpful - most records don't show any parents names or if theydo it is just Mr and Mrs Perkins etc, which makes it impossible to trace any line for sure.

I am going back to the original posting by BUZZ as to Elizabeth Perkins. I have my GGG Grand Father William Henry Perkins b/1801 in Hertfordshine. His parents are thought to be John Perkins ( b/1785 in Wokingham ) and Ann Cruttwell ( b/ Workingham ). My G Grand Father was Henry Cruttwell Perkins ... I believe the Crutwell middle name is strong evidence of the connection here. Buzz has a Thomas Perkins b/ Wokingham who is thought to be the younger brother of John Perkins ( b/1785 ).
The parents of John and Thomas should be Thomas and Elizabeth Perkins. If anyone can add to this that would be appreciated.
In addition, in the many dialogue pages there is reference to a Wokingham history book .... does anyone know if this is available on line?? I live on Vancouver Island ( West Coast of Canada ) and I need to rely on the internet.
Thanks to all for this interesting read......Regards Bob on Vancouver Island

I think that you are referring to the Wokingham Historian which was published by the Wokingham Society History Group. It is unlikely to be available online and only the later issues seem to still be available in some local bookshops.
The good news is that the issues which refer to the Perkins family (see my earlier post) are available from the Berks FHS bookshop at the site mentioned above.

Hi Perks1
I've only just discovered RootsChat so I hope you'll forgive me if I'm a bit green on procedure. My cousin's wife (now in her late 80's) has been researching my mother's side of the family for over 35 years, all without a computer. She's kindly allowed me to scan a huge number of documents and charts, amongst which are several devoted to the Perkins family.
My maternal grandmother was Catherine Perkins (b. 1869, d. 1922), the daughter of Capt. Peter Perkins (b. 1838, d. 1895). They lived in St. David's, Pembrokeshire. The tree shows both Ann(e) (b. 1712) and Catherine (b. 1750) Meyler, and their respective marriages to John (b. 1697) and John (b. c1747) Perkins. What is particularly interesting is that my cousin's wife has traced my maternal ancestry to about 1490 with the birth of John Perkins of Mathry & St. David's. He was the father of David ap John Perkins (b. c1520, d. 1587).
If you'd like any further information, I'll be happy to share it with you and others on this forum.
Best wishes.

Hello rootschatters Was googling john Perkins and Catherine meyler and found this thread under Berkshire. Wow John perkins 1748-1835 is believed to be a brother to George 1745-1797. Also a brother William. Want to mark this thread for future. John was not a farmer but a mariner; had a file with Trinity house in 1815. George also owned a ship and farmed at Porthlisky near St. David. looking forward to sharing LizR
-
Hi Liz
Good to hear from you. You are indeed correct. My research shows that John Perkins (1747-1835) was a mariner born into a predominantly farming family. This is what I have on John. You probably have most of this anyway. His siblings are:
Grace - 1737-1742
George 1739-1742
William 1742-1812
George 1744-1797
David 1749-1753
Grace 1753-1766
David 1757-1766
I think he was born at Caerwen Farm and first went to sea in 1766. He married Catherine Meyler 23 Dec 1776. I think that they were first cousins.
Catherine and he have the following children:
Henry 1778-1852
John 1780-1841
Peter 1780-1839
Thomas 1782-1872
Eleanor 1784-1834
Martha 1787 - ?
His Trinity House petition appears to imply that Peter and Eleanor both have learning difficulties, which is backed up by his Will in which he leaves his farm Llanvern y frane to his son John, providing that he provides a home for life to his brother Peter and sister Eleanor.
He died on 19 Aug 1835 and was buried at St David Cathedral on 21 Aug.
Good to hear from you
Perks1
-
Good Morning Great to have all that. You are way ahead of me. I am descended from George's 1744-1797 daughter Martha who married Gilbert Howell in 1812. Where did you find all the baptisms? I also tried the SoG site to order the Trinity House petition and got nowhere. Have read his will and son John in 1841. His father John appears to have no will or Ann the mother??? Appreciate your help. LizR

Most of the info I have has been kindly given to me by other Perkins researchers, many of whom have done it all the old fashioned way, visiting graves and local parish records offices. I take my hat off to them, as it must have been a painstaking business.
I don't have much info on what happened to Martha Perkin married to Gilbert Howell. I would love to find out more if you have some info you can share with me.

Hi chaps,
I heard about this thread from Liz, and hope nobody minds me sticking in my two-pennorth-worth?
*DW James in his 'St Davids and Dewisland' says John Perkin emigrated on the "Wave" to Tazmania in 1838, and says that John is the son of Henry Perkin and Mary [nee Williams] of Llanvirn, St Davids, Pembs, born 1812.
*Public Trees on Ancestry show John going to Australia, and also his brother Thomas [b 1806]; and link into Perkin and Nephew; and also link into Berea church in Hobart - which I found interesting, since Berea Independent chapel at St David's was the first chapel in Wales with this name, as far as I'm aware....
*The Will of Henry Perkin of Llanvirn, the father of these two brothers [Will made 1846; died 1852], says that he leaves £5 to son Thomas "if he ever returns to GB" - it also mentions some monies that Thomas has left in his father's care - and £5 left to John "if he ever returns to GB".
[ NB this Will is wrongly listed under the name of 'Henry Chalk' on the Nat Library of Wales website]
*This may be a total red herring, but mentions of a Thomas Perkin, age 23, in 1829 on the convict ship 'Thames' and a John Perkin in 1838 on the convict ship 'Lord Lyndoch' can be found on the ships' Medical Records.
I don't think i'm related to the Perkin families on this thread, but I do have Perkin ancestors from St Davids, so I've enjoyed reading the posts - and also seeing how everyone has helped each other here.
-
Hello
Good to hear from you. Thank you for your input. Always good to hear that research is backed up by other sources. Not come across DW James before. Thanks.

hi Perks1 and TyGwyn46,
PWLLCAEROG
I'm finding it difficult to push back beyond John Perkin of Pwllcaerog, b1697.
There is a Will of David Perkins of Pwllcaerog, dated 1681, in which he says he has a son George, who is the executor, so presumably over 21. If George was born pre-1660, then MAYBE his son was John b 1697.
John b 1697 has children named George and David - but I'm clearly reduced to speculation here......
Can anyone advise, please?
CAERHYS [farm next door to Llanvirn, and also near Pwllcaerog]
My own Perkin line goes back to Lewis and Jenet Perkin, whose children were born 1730-1754 - so I'm provisionally assuming Lewis and Jenet were born around 1710.
Their children were:
Peter b 1730 [my direct ancestor]
Thomas b 1733
Henry b 1736
Mary b 1739
James b 1743
Anne b 1746
John b 1749
William b 1754
I'd like to connect Lewis Perkin with the wider Perkin/s families in St Davids, and push back this family a few more generations, so again I'm hoping for some advice!
thanks, Elaine

Dear welsh perkin researchers Can we duplicate and move the welsh end of this thread to the Pembroke board. I only found it by google. Would never have looked at the Berkshire board otherwise.
