- The surname will be automatically converted to upper-case before storing

RootsChatters' names are also links, you can send a Chatter a PM by clicking on the link.
Frequently Asked Questions:
??? - I keep seeing this line (or similar):
"Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/vhosts/boco-test.rootschat.net/sit-main.php on line xxx"
Have I broken it ?
No, this is definitely an error. Please let me know (copy and paste it into a 'Reply' on this topic) along with any details of what you were doing when it appeared, so I can sort it out.
One instance of this I called the O'Crikey Syndrome - Names with an apostrophe (O'Connel, O'Mara, etc) produced this error. This has now been fixed.

When i log into SIT my user name changes to another members. Can you un cross the wires please as i can not get to my surnames.

Hi Carol80,
I just checked the database, and found you as "Carol80 in New Zealand"
I have changed that to "Carol80"
Please have another go, and let me know
a) if it works, or
b) what name is coming up
Thanks,
Bob

Today the name was KiwiPom and now it is Mickeymc45.

Hi Carol,
I logged into the SIT as "you" and had no problems. I've asked Trystan to have a look and see if he can spot the problem.
Please be patient,
Bob

-
Hi Celia,
I've added a new topic here:
"User's Guide" to the SIT: Editing Surname Interests"
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,84454.0.html
Hope this helps.

Hello Bob
I have just discovered why my edit didn't do anything,I have ten surname interest.I tried again but it still didn't work,so i scrolled back up, to go back. And there at the top of the page was the surname i needed to edit. (no mention of that)Not visable from my last entry,so i tested the edit, pressed add to surename interest and it worked.Simple ;D
So there are the instructions for editing your Name interests ;D ;D

Me again. Can not get into my surnames. When i log in to SIT it comes up framoss.
-
Can I search for a surname which does not appear in my own personal list. If so how ?
Suey
-
Hi Suey,
just use the SEARCH facility
-
Durrrr! Did'nt have my thinking head on last night, thanks Bob :)
-
I have finished entering my surname interests, but they don't appear on my page when I click on my username. Is there a way I can remedy this? Thanks,
Glenys
-
Hi Glenys,
not sure if this is what you were expecting here, but ...
There is no link between the RootsChat profile names and the SIT
You have entered your names (I checked, they are all there !) and you can now click on "SHOW all with my Surname Interests" to find out who is also researching your names.
... or just browse generally, to see who is researching what !
The usernames you will see are all links to the RootsChatters' profiles, so if you find any matches, you send them a PM if you want to find out more.
If you mean something else, let me know, and we'll find out.
Bob
-
OK, thank you Bob. I just noticed on other profile names searching the same surnames I am, that their list of surnames is included on their profiles. I appreciate your help.
Glenys
-
Hi Glynis,
that's a differen kettle of fish !
Go to your profile, and click on: RootsChat Profile Information
Then in the input box: Research names or areas:
you can add your name interests, so that they appear on all your postings
Hope you enjoy RootsChat, and good luck in finding relatives, ancestors, making friends and the other stuff we all do here !
Bob
-
Thanks again Bob - decided to just add my website rather than type in all those names again. I appreciate your good wishes - I hope I find lots of rellies too!! Thanks for the opportunity and great site.
Glenys
-
I have tried entering a name to" your surname interests " and I can not seem to get this to work I'm logged into Rootschat as I've always done but above when I try to enter my surnames of interest it has Either the chatter-name or chatter_id is wrong !! What am I doing wrong ?Please!
-
Hi gransworld,
Problem solved !!
Reminder to Everybody !
This problem happens if you change your name in your profile, after entering surnames in the SIT !
SIT sees your RootsChat ID and your new RootsChat name, and "says"
there is somebody else here with this ID, somebody with the name 'old RootsChat name'
so it won't let this ursurper (:o) use someone else's account ;D
No problem, just send me a PM if you change your profile name :)
Your SIT

oh. So they do.
this is getting as complicated as work - having to keep up with all software issue nos. At least you still seem to be downwardly compatible!!!!!!
Sue

err um, how do you enter a Surname interest that is not in the U.K. or the Channel Islands?
e.g. Canada?
Newbie ???

Just leave the county blank !!

Oh my head hurts! I've banged it on the wall 3 times ::)
of course you do....
thanks Bob,

The county of West Lothian (a.k.a. Linlithgowshire) is missing

I'll try and update it a.s.a.p
Bob
ps. don't worry about getting it wrong; as a last resort, I can delete any errors "by hand"

Hi Bob,
I click on "Your Surname Interests" at the bottom of any RootsChat page (as per your instructions), and a new page opens with the message "Welcome Guest", and "To log in to the SIT, click here". When I do that I get the message "You have to be logged in to access the SIT, registration is free ..."
Well ... I've logged in three times around, and I'm just going in circles. At the top of any other RootsChat page it correctly identifies me and acknowledges me as logged in. I have accessed SIT many times in the past, but not now ...
??
Cheers
Tim
-
Hi Tim,
it could be something to do with an old page in the cache or an old cookie.
I'll have to ask Trystan.
Bob
-
Tim,
How long ago did you log into the Surname Interests Table? We did a bit of a changeover some weeks ago, and you may need to delete your Rootschat cookie (but before you do make sure you know your username and login password!)
Trystan
-
Hi Trystan,
It's probably a couple of months since I visited the SIT. In the meantime I changed my email address, but not my user name or password - could that have affected anything?
I've deleted all cookies and temporary files from the Tools --> Internet Options drop-down menu, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference - I still cannot log in. Is there something else I need to do to delete my Rootschat cookie?
Cheers
Tim
-
Hi
I changed my chatter- name and then went to add some Surnames and I get:
"Either the chatter-name or chatter_id is wrong !!"
But looking at my log in name above it's what I've changed it to.
So if I needed to change both chatter-name and chatter_id why was there only one name change option available to me???
Ta
-
Hi suziehaze,
Welcome to RootsChat !
I gather you're referring to the Surname Interests Table ??
Your chatter_id is your RootsChat ID number.
(hover with the mouse over your name, anywhere, and you should see at the bottom of your browser your user number 22760)
When you started using the SIT you logged in with your old user name,
so now, when you log in as 'susiehaze' your user ID is still the same, so the SIT says "Sorry, there is already an ID 22760 here and it is not suziehaze !!", hence the message :(
If you are now going to stay "suziehaze" for a while, I'll change your name in the SIT database !
OK with you ??
Bob
-
Hi
When I look at the entries most have ../../ before the place names. Is this significant or should we backspace to remove this? Have I not entered the data correctly?
Jane
-
Hi Jane,
what you are seeing is the difference between the "old" Version 2 SIT with just Surname and Comment fields, and the "new" Version 3 SIT, with additional County and Place name fields
Unfortunately, not everybody has edited their older entries yet (Hint, Hint !!)
To Everybody !!!)
Edit your existing entries to include County and place name and what will then appear is
CCC/Place name/Comment,
where CCC stands for the 3 letter Chapman County Code
Try editing one name, to see how it goes, then edit the rest !
this might help, too (although the diagrams are from the older version):

Bob

Hi Bob
I was entering them incorrectly. Another query: How do I enter the same name with more than 1 county? I have tried to enter them individually but only the first entry shows up.
Jane
-
Hi Jane,
Use a new entry for each county.
The whole idea behind the "new" input is that people can search by County.
The alternative would have been seperate tables for each "Surname Interests in County XYZ" and I didn't wan to go that route ;D
Bob
-
Hello Bob,
I have attempted to put my surname intrestes on the Surname Interests table, everytime I enter one it keep showing I have no entries on the table.
Can you help??
Ian ???
-
Hi Ian,
Problem solved :)
You have changed your profile name twice, since entering your names in the SIT
The SIT thinks that the user-ID for "North Country Boy" belongs to somebody else !!
I have now changed your SIT name to "North Country Boy" and (hopefully) you can now access your names again
Bob
-
Problem solved Bob,
Many Thanks
-
Hi,
the surnames table link does not appear to be working. Can someone verify for me?
thanks
Carol

Hi Carol,
can you be a bit more specific please - what exactly is not working, as it works fine for me.
Thanks,
Bob

I can't log in to the database at the moment. Is it me, or is there a problem?
I clicked the [Your Surname Interests] link at the bottom of the page, and then the button to log in, but it went to 'page cannot be dispayed'.
-
Hi Starry,
sorry for the delay, I was out of town ....
There was a problem with the RootsChat server on Monday ... try again please, and let us know if you are still having problems,
Thanks,
Bob
-
Thanks Bob
It seems fine now :)

Hi Bob,
I thought it was time I updated my surname interests.
I am logged in and I have managed to edit my original names but I am struggling to Add any new ones. I get the following message
Either the chatter-name or chatter_id is wrong !!

Hi Sarah,

:'( Hello Bob,
I can't seem to get the Search SIT working. Even just entering England with nothing else brings up nothing. Am I having a 'senior's moment'?
OzzieJoan
-
Sorry Joan, and everybody else !!
We've changed one or two settings to higher security, but it means I now have to rewrite some of the code.
I've put a message on the SIT too, to warn everybody.
And, as the saying goes ......
Normal Service will be resumed as soon as possible !
-
No probs, Bob. All your efforts are appreciated and I, for one, don't mind waiting.
OzzieJoan :)
-
I fink i fixed it - try it and see !!

I just tried to log into the SIT, and am getting the same problem as Starry. Get to the login page then it says page not found.
Is there a problem?

Hi TaffyBlue,
sorry for the delay, I was out of town for a few days ....
There was a problem with the RootsChat server lately, but I think it's fixed now y ... try again please, and let us know if you are still having problems,
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the info. I heard it was something to do with the security, which was why the freespace was down as well.
I see that it's back up and running again.
Thanks
Paul

My profile says that I have 2 surnames parry and simpson. I added parry today but simpson has disappeared from the table. Also I tried to post a new topic today, but was given an error message that I had already sent that post, but my profile says that I have no posts. The subject was Martha Simpson. Twiss.
-
I edited surname, however when I checked my surnames list, it was no longer there. A blank surname with blank details were there in place.
I then added the surname again, but it does not appear on my list. No added surnames are appearing.
Please can someone help. Thanks.
-
Yes,
I can see what you mean!
We'll let Bob have a look at this. ;)
Trystan

I have just entered all my lines of enquiry (and clicked add after each one) but when look at my own list I have nothing there!
What have I done wrong?
-
Red-faced and sweating cobblers ....... I'm working on it !!

Still red-faced, but no longer sweating .....
I think it's OK now, try it and see, please :) :)

Bob,
I'd just like to say that the SIT is fabulous and I've never had any problems with it. Keep up the good work.

hi Bob.
i am logged into rootschat and have tried to access SIT but it won't let me look at all with my surname interests as its says i have to be logged on to rootschat...........
Sue
-
Hi Sue,
it could be that you have an older cookie.
Try logging out of RootsChat, deleting all cookies, (make sure you know all your passwords, in case there are any sites where you are permantly logged on)
Then log in again, and use the link at the bottom of the page to enter the SIT.
Hope this helps
Bob
-
I edited my list a while ago, but my posts are still showing the old list....for example there is a surname on my posts "Balderstone" that I deleted quite some time ago.
Also, the changes I made to some other records have not been updated.
Any ideas?
Nina
-
Hi Nina,
we had some problems awhile ago and it is just possible that an older backup was written back onto the site, and it may just be that happened after you done your changes.
Please try again, maybe just one name at a time and let me know if anything is not working.
Thanks,
Bob
-
Hi Bob,
I made a few changes and additions, and it looks fine on the "Your Surname Interests" page, but then I just posted on the Lanarkshire board, and the old list is still there! (and it is here too!)
Help!

Hi Just completed my main line name list but when I ask for matches all seem OK except my BILLS I am shown other BILLS researchers but my entry isn't shown. Does this mean other folk wont pick up that I am researching this particular name? How can I rectify this? When I ask to Edit my names it shows the entry OK
Regards Trees
-
Hi Tees,
Seems OK to me, your BILLS are definitely in the table, and showing with all other BILLS.
where did you look for matches ??
If you looked in the "Surname Search" (the A-Z list), then this is only updated once a day, so they wouldn't have appeared yesterday, but they are there today.
If you looked in the "Advanced Search then they should be visible immediately.
Please let me know, because if it was the "Advanced Search", then that would definitely be an error.
thanks,
Bob
-
Hello Bob - Just a small problem. When I went into Surname Interests I could not find my one and only name listed under M. The name is MYAL. Was I doing something wrong ???
P.S. Is that because it is only a summary ???
-
Hi Emmeline,
I've just tried looking under M in Surname Search and MYAL in Advanced Search and found your name with no problems.
Try again, and if you still can't find it, please tell me exactly what you are doing.
thanks,
Bob
-
Hi Bob,
Yes my BILLS are on the advanced search but don't show up when I ask Show all with my surname interests BILLS were posted ages ago I've been doing batches. Its no problem as long as they show up for other researcher :)
Trees
-
Hi Bob
I notice a similar problem. When I show all my surnames they are all successfully displayed but occasionally my own details are missing from one of them. The problem seems to move around. Today when I look at Woodbridge I see two other people's surnames but not my entry. All my other surnames contain my entry.
This is obviously not a severe problem but could be a symptom of something. I also wonder if the odd entry for another person is missing.
David
-
Sorry about that Bob. Have it sussed now ::) ::) ::)
-
Hi Berlin Bob
The surname interest list is a really useful way to contact fellow researchers.many thanks for it.
Is there any way the massive names can be ordered into county? It takes ages trying to find matches as my old eyes find reading the small print a strain looking for SMITHS/JONES /HALL in a particular county is difficult. Oh the joys of having popular family names :)
Trees
-
Hi Trees,
- click on 'Advanced Search'
- select a countę from the drop-down pick-list
- click on 'Show Search Results'
you will then get every entry, where this county has been entered.
But . . . .
Not everybody enters a county, as their ancestors moved around a bit
so for a second search,
enter the county in the Comments field, as *text*
this will find all occurrences of 'text' in the comments field.
So try the whole county name, then any 'usual' abbreviations, or the Chapman Code (see County drop-down list), etc
Good luck,
Bob
ps.
For everybody reading this:
If you haven't entered a county, please do so.
If your folks came from different counties, add more entries, one for each county.
As Trees says, it can be handy to search by county, and the more people enter unique county information, the easier it will be to search :)
-
Many thanks Bob that makes life a lot easier
:)

I have just added my Surnames and need to test it to see if it comes through at the bottom of my messages.

Hi Cornishpasty,
please read this:
Frequently Asked Questions:

Bob

Forgot to mention this here:
there is now a help button on the "Surname Interests Table"
It's on the top right of the page and looks like this:
(http://surname.rootschat.com/img/nav_button_help.gif) (http://surname.rootschat.com/sit-help.php)
-
Bob,
Love your SIT feature.
One minor infelicity in editing, I don't know if it's always been this way: If I have an entry with a County already identified and edit it, the text fields are filled in correctly with the existing data, but the County drop-down list is blank. It does not automatically position itself on the county previously entered. So if I don't notice this, and, say, change the Comments and Save, I lose the county info.
Added later: oops, never mind. This is probably because I changed my user name and didn't inform the authorities. I just discovered Add is not working at all for me right now.
Mike
-
Hi Mike,
thanks for the PM, I've now changed your user name in the SIT.
If I have an entry with a County already identified and edit it, the text fields are filled in correctly with the existing data, but the County drop-down list is blank. It does not automatically position itself on the county previously entered. So if I don't notice this, and, say, change the Comments and Save, I lose the county info.
And you are right, it is an error, nothing to do with change of user name.
One day, when I have lots of time, I will look into this, but for now I must ask all of you to add the county, again, if you edit your entries.
(and if you hadn't entered the county anyway, then do it now !!)
Bob
-
The last surname I added ,WARBY hasn`t been added.
I have even edited it again to see if it will add but it won`t.
Can you do it for me please?
-
Hi Carrie Ann,
WARBY is there, as entered by "Carrie Ann" : (ENG/../Warby births outside the UK);
When you say "hasn't been added" did you mean that you couldn't see it on the
'Surname Search'.
The main database is updated immediately, when you add or change something, but the alphabetical lists from the 'Surname Search' only get updated once a day, at midnight.
Bob
-
Am I too thick to understand this ?
Why isn`t it showing on my messages like my other interests are?
-
The names shown in your posts are those that you added to your profile.
The SIT is a completely seperate database and is not linked in anyway to your posts. Its only link is to the message system to allow you to contact other users.
David
-
Why isn`t it showing on my messages like my other interests are?
David has given you the short answer, the long answer is here:
Go to the SIT and click on the HELP button, and then on Frequently Asked Questions (http://surname.rootschat.com/sit-help.php#faqs)
see: "My postings are not showing my SIT names"
Bob
-
Hi Bob,
I'm having trouble just trying to access the surnames!! I'm interested in 'BRYAN' -but my 'click' doesn't seem to register. The 'Help' page doesn't allow me to access anything either!
I realise it may well be my set-up at this end - I use a 'Tv-mate' similar to the uk web-tv - and for sometime (c2005) couldn't even access 'Rootschat'!!
(I realise I'm probably the problem!) Is there anything WE can do? -Valerie
-
Bob:
Whenever I try to create and then post an entry I get an error message that either user name or password is incorrect. Wazzup???
BTW, I have AVG; is there a known issue with this software?
sdbadger
-
Hi sdbadger,
according to the SIT, your chatter ID number had a different user name.
I think you must have changed your name since entering your names in the SIT.
see the SIT help page,
http://surname.rootschat.com/sit-help-faqs.php?lang=EN
"I can't access my names, I get 'chatter_id or chatter_name is wrong' "
I've changed it to sdbadger now :)

Bob

Hiya, badger!
meles
(sorry - back to topic in hand... :))
-
I am new to this site.
My direct line came from Ireland in the 1800's. There are 200 - 300 variants of my surname (Donachy)and I have no idea of what it was in Derry, Ireland.
How do I register this in the Surname Interests Table?
Hugo
-
Hi Hugo,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
Just add them one name at a time in the Surname Interest Table.
With 200-300 variations, you might just decide to add the 20-50 most common ocurrences - your choice :)
Click on the link [Your Surname Interests] at the bottom of any page.
regards,
Bob
-
I want to add 2 names which were used together by several generations - Greenwood Bland - when I try to add I am directed to click on ACTION_ADD_something or other, which I can't find. I have tried hyphenating but that gets the same response. Help please
-
Hi Dave,
it's an error !!
It should read "SAVE the edited Surname Interest" or "SAVE the new Surname Interest",
depending on whether you are adding new names or editing existing names.
Think carefully about adding two names on one line:
you will be the only one searching for "GREENWOOD BLAND".
Much better is two enter the names seperately, but add the other name in the "Comment" line.
You will probably find other GREENWOODs and other BLANDs and then you need to check your findings, to see if others are searching both names.
I'll repair the error when I get a a bit of time.
regards,
Bob
-
Sorry Bob
I want to enter the two names together to avoid 5 million Greenwoods contacting me. I have no interest in most of the Greenwoods. I am still unable to save the name Greenwood Bland or Greenwood-Bland
Dave
-
Hi Dave,
we don't have 5 million Rootschatters (yet) and contact is only through a PM at Rootschat.
I'll look into the error.
Bob
-
Hi Dave,
The error is now corrected (I hope ;D )
regards,
Bob
-
Sorted now thanks Bob.
-
Was checking the surname interests table today.
Where have the H entries hopped off to? :-\
-
They are there today. On sunday O and N had a "sunday break" ;D
I am guessing that something happens in the moment they are being updated, maybe a second person clicking on that letter at the same time, and then it "forgets".
Bob
-

Hello. I have just looked on the Surname Interest for the first time. When I click on a name that I am interested in, very small writing that comes up - -is that it? I then clicked on a name and just got their profile. Am I doing something wrong? If I want to contact the person do I go to another section? Soloist
-
Hi Soloist,
That's right, the person's name is a link to their profile.
see the Help-Page:

Hi She53,
Welcome to the Forum :)
The SIT was taken offline as we had some problems recently when we transferred the forum to a new server. We are now waiting for the "all clear" from the Boss before we can start it up again.

Bob

I am trying to delete a name from my Surname interests, but no list of names appears for me to be able to delete or edit them, but if I do a search on my interests all of the matches are there.
I have been able to add a name, but still no list

Thank you, all working now!

Tried initial 'M' on the SIT and received 0 (zero) names. As mine is one of them, and there must be very many more, looks like a problem with the database/programme?! ???
Regards - Dave

Works for me Dave, and your name is there

its fine with me too how strange give it another try ???

I think the SIT gets hiccups now and then - the problem sounds familiar, but there is no known solution.
Trying again the next day usually seems to work (but then another letter "hiccups" ::) )

Bob

..Yes .... I'm having trouble with the 'M's too! Tried looking for 'Mortimer' ...... nothing even close shows up ...... lots of 'M' names mixed up ...not in order. Valerie

Hi I am looking for people with the surname Spenser but when trying to locate this name on the table find that the table ends suddenly before reaching the Sp,s what am I doning wrong?
-
Try again - it's OK now :)
(it gets hiccups now and then, usually it's alright 24 hours later)

Thank you Berlin Bob I got in but unfortunately the name Spenser with an S and not a C does not show up on the list in Rootschat.

Do not dismiss the spelling using a c rather than an s. You need to be flexible with surnames and these spellings would have been interchangable. On the SIT cross check the surname with first names as well as the area your family lived in.
If you get stuck you can start your own thread asking for help or confirmation that you are on the right track.

I think you might need to make 2/3 posts before system will allow you to add names- if you reply to my post then try again it might work for you.
-
ok thankyou i will try again
-
I think I must be doing something wrong...... :(
I put my main surnames in the table ages ago but now you've enhanced things (thanks Bob!) I want to add occupations and some comments. (Not too sure what Sig is, or I might want to add that too.... ::) )
Anyway, I've highlighted the name and pressed 'edit' but nothing happens. I'm using Firefox - could that affect it?

Hi Angela,
I've haven't had time to update the help pages yet, but basically,
1) click on the edit button to get a list of your entries, and then
2) click on the edit icon (if you hover over the icon, it will show a tool-tip "Edit or Delete record".
regards,
Bob

AHA ;D
Got it! Thanks Bob.... you're a star :)
Much appreciated

No urgency:
This may one of your "24 hour hiccups" but trying an advanced search on SIT it is reluctant to agree that England has any counties, but after trying other countries it finally offers me the English counties, however search then fails because no location has been input.
Also is it possible to display the information sorted on location?
thanks, peter
