Hi Lara
Welcome to Rootschat :)

Alexander MacIntosh, 61, crofter, b. Clachnaharry, Inv
Elizabeth, 63, crofter's wife, b. Inverness
Mary Ann, dau 32, laundrymaid, b. Clachnaharry, Inv
Mary Ann, grd dau,11, scholar, b. Kiltarlity
Angus, grd son, 8, scholar, b. Kiltarlity
Robert Buchanan, boarder,10, scholar , b. Glasgow
Mary Buchanan, boarder, 8, scholar , b. Glasgow
Ester Buchanan, boarder, 4, b. Glasgow
we know have to find a birth certificate for one of them which should show their parents :)

Esther was the easiest to find as her name is not as frequent as Mary and Robert.
She was b. Dec 27 1897 in Dennistoun, Glasgow as Esther McDougall Buchanan
Her parents were Robert Buchanan an Iron Turner (journeyman) and Letitia, maiden surname Bryan. They were married in Glasgow on 19th April 1889
We'll have to see what happened to them.

I think something might have happened - maybe the family split up.
I've found the death of an 11 month old girl, Letitia Wood OBrien or Buchanan, 21 June 1905, Dennistoun. her mother is given as Letitia OBrien, wife of Robert Buchanan, machine maker.

I'm having problems finding Robert and Letitia on the 1891 and 1901 censuses but I've got their marriage:
19 April 1889, 17 East Hill Street, Glasgow, Church of Scotland marriage
Robert Buchanan, iron turner, journeyman, bach, aged 25, living 6 Thomsons Lane, Glasgow.
Parents - William Buchanan, shoemaker and Catherine, m.s. Anderson, dec.
AND
Letitia Bryan, yarn winder, spinster, aged 22, living 6 Thomsons Lane.
Parents - James Brian, handloom weaver, dec. and Mary McLuskey, previously Brian , m.s. Bell

Nearest that I can find on the 1901 is a Robert Buchanan living alone:
15 Fairley Street, Dennistoun
644/3 ED 25 Household No. 72
Robert Buchanan, 37, sewing machine maker, b. Glasgow
It's the right age :-\

Hi All
Only one possible death entry showing for mother Letitia, not until 1933:
1933 LETITIA BUCHANAN/ OTHER NAME O'BRIEN, AGE 66 IN GARNGADHILL, GLASGOW
Monica :)
-
Thanks Monica - this family seems to split up and reform :-\
She was definitely alive in 1905 and was born circa 1867.
I've got a possible for Robert Buchanan in 1891 as a lodger, iron moulder in Govan but not sure.
Gadget
-
We have her parents from the marriage entry so not much point in using units yet.
-
Esther McDougall Buchanan, aged 27, a domestic servant, spinster, married David Morton, Springburn, Glasgow on 27 June 1924.
Her parents, Robert Buchanan, iron turner and Elisha m.s. Bryan, are recorded as both deceased.
Obviously she believed this.

I'm not having much joy with The Highland Orphanage, Inverness. it opened in 1882 and was designed by the Architect Ross but that's all I'm getting.
Other hits seem to lead to this thread. ::) ::) ::)
Unfortunately, I'm not in the Highlands at the moment so can't use my local info :(
It seems that they must have been removed from Glasgow at some stage in the 1890s - Esther after 1897 - and then boarded out with the MacIntoshes.
It's at times like these that we need Runner (Russell) :-\

The best that I can offer you for details of the Highland Orphanage and any records is to approach The Highland Council:

There are a number of contact points on this website.
meanwhile, I'll continue looking for info on your family :)

I might have found Robert and his parents on the 1891 in Glasgow, Barony:
114 Canning Street, Glasgow
District 644/7 ED68 Household NO 23
Robert Buchanan, 27, gear cutter, b. Glasgow
Elisabeth, 24, b. Ireland (Letitia - Elisha - Elisabeth -also Bryan/O'Brien as m.s)
Robert, 10 mths, b. Glasgow (Census in April 1891, he born June 1890)
Parents' ages about right according to their marriage cert.

Hi there
The Highland Orphanage was located in Culduthel Road, Inverness until the late 1940s/50s. Not sure when it was established in Culduthel Road, but it was certainly in this location in 1911 according to Slater's Directory as listed on Am Baile.
http://www.ambaile.co.uk/en/item/item_page.jsp?item_id=11284
I'll have a check through a few books I have and see if I can find any further mentions.
Hope this helps!
Lynn
-
The online info state it was founded in 1882 - see my previous messages #10 and #11 :)
It would appear that the three Buchanan children were boarded out at Kiltarlity though, so they might not have been in the Orphanage for long.
The records must be at the Highland Council somewhere.
I've already put up that link.

Hi,
I found this interesting wee snippet online
http://www.codexgeo.co.uk/dsa/building_full.php?id=M016038
I also have some books at home which I'll have a look for after work and try and find some reference. I live in Inverness and know Culduthel Road quite well but I just can't think which building would have been the orphanage.....then again the way the Council destroy all the good things here it could well have been bulldozed years ago.

I've looked in the books about Inverness that I have but there is no real mention of the Highland Orphanage. There could well be in James Miller's book "Inverness" but I would have to read through the whole book again but I'm too busy tracing my family tree to read right now. ;D
I have found a great piece of film on the Scottish Screen Archive website, it is dated 1952, this is the description - Entrance to Mario's [in Inverness?] Man emerges carrying giant chocolate Easter egg, gets into his car. tracking shots from car through streets to the Highland Orphanage. Man delivers the egg to children at the door; ints Orphanage I see there is a question mark after Inverness but I can confirm this is definitely Inverness. Here's the link.

Hi Lara :)
To help us, could you say how you decided that Robert and his sister's were in the Highland Orphanage. So far we don't have any evidence, unless there are records available.
They seem to have been born in Glasgow in the 1890- 1897 and then appear in Kiltarlity as 'boarders' in the 1901 census and, at least as far as Esther is concerned, are back in Glasgow to marry.
Did they have any connection with the Highlands besides this?

Dont know if this will help.But.Robert married Maggie Bryan. She was born on 24.4.1900.Her father was called George bryan,Irish.
Dont know any more from the past.Maggie died on 10.6.71.

Hi Lara
Trying to find their marriage but nothing showing in Scotland at the moment :( Maybe they married in Cumbria. Do you know the approx year that their first child was born.
I think the 1911 census might be useful in this instance :-\

Hi Gadget
They could have been married in cumbria, first child was born on 17.7.1918.
Workington is possible.I m interested in more info if possible on William Buchanan, the shoe maker,is it pos to find his fathers details, could have been born around 1838 ish.All the other info seems to fit into place. Many thanks.

19 April 1889, 17 East Hill Street, Glasgow, Church of Scotland marriage

I've found the marriage of William Buchanan and Catherine Anderson :D
Glasgow - Calton
5th Sept 1862, Free Church of Scotland (image very poor - I'll have to do some enhancing)
William Buchanan, Shoemaker Journeyman, Bachelor, aged 23. Parents - Robert Buchanan, Baker, deceased and Jane, maiden surname McKinlay
and
Catherine Anderson, ?(not hand) loom weaver, spinster, aged 21. Parents - James Anderson, (occ looks like Twister ::)), deceased and Jessie m.s. ? Burnside.
I'l get back to you when I can make the images clearer.

A bit more from the marriage cert:
location of marriage:
12 Monteith Row, Glasgow
Residence at time of marriage (both):
122 Main Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow
Still not sure about Catherine's parents details. Here's what it says:
-
There is a submitted entry on IGI for a marriage between a James Anderson and Jessie Burnside on 06 DEC 1834 in Eastwood, Renfrew.
Monica :)
-
Thanks Monica - it confirms the Burnside :)
Do you know what a Twister was - I'm assuming it was something to do with cotton/linen/wool production.
Gadget
-
Not sure Gadget, not one I've come across but the very name does make you think of weaving etc.
I'm just trying to find them on the censuses. This is the closest I can see so far for 1841:
Jas Anderson 25, compositor, b. Scotland
Jessie Anderson 20, , b. Scotland
Anne Jeffrey 8
Wm Traser 20
Address: Paterson St, Glasgow St Pauls
Monica
-
It would be nice if the two deceased parents died after 1855.
Any sign on the 1851 for either set of parents?
I'm getting squiffy/sore eyes and would be grateful for some help on them :-\
Gadget
-
Jessie looks to have died in 1892, age 74, in Dennistoun, Glasgow. Widow of James, a coal miner (?), father John, a xxx something weaver and mother Catherine MacDonald. Son William reported the death.
Monica
-
So William was still around after the marriage to Letitia - I wonder if son Robert, father of Robert (b.1890) was around at his death - it might give us some clues about what happened.
-
:-\ I'm struggling to find anybody in any census with any confidence at the moment - I'm jumping back and forth and nothing is coming through clearly.
From IGI, William Buchanan and Catherine Anderson, show the following children:
Robert 1863
James 1864
Jessie 1866
William 1868
I was hoping to find them in 1871 to confirm Catherine's place of birth but can't see the family with any confidence as yet.
Also cannot as yet see a household for 1851 with Catherine Anderson with either James and Jessie (Janet) or mother Janet by herself.
Monica
Monica
-
In the absence of any censuses ::)...Catherine died in 1886 in Camlachie Glasgow aged 38. Husband William reported the death. Parents James Anderson, coal miner and Jessie Burnside.
Now with info from the death certs, this is at least one confirmed census. William's address in 1891 matches the one he gave when reporting mother's death. Mother, slightly older that age reported at death:
Wm Anderson 53, Packer Cloth Warehouse, b. Pollokshaws, Renfrewshire
James Anderson 17
John Anderson 15
William Anderson 7
Archd C Anderson 5
Elizabeth Anderson 1 Mo
Janet Anderson 81, mother, formerly weaver b. Pollokshaws, Renfrewshire
Elizabeth Nicol (Anderson) 51, sister, formerly weaver b. Pollokshaws, Renfrewshire
Address: No 11 Annfield St, Dennistoun
-
So the Twister in 1862 became a coal miner by 1886 - I come from a line of coal miners and I don't recognise the term as a mining occ.
No sign of the Buchanans? I think Lara was keen for us to follow up William Buchanan.
The only William (shoemaker) and Catherine combination that I've found so far on the 1871 are a William (34) and Catherine (30) Buchan in Ellon, Aberdeenshire but it's not them :-\
-
I think the twister may well be miner Gadget on a clearer image ;D
This looks like them on the 1841, with the names we now have:
James Anderson 40, coal miner
Jannet Anderson 30
James Anderson 15
William Anderson 3
Elisabeth Anderson 1
Address: Baydstan, Eastwood Renfrewshire
Regarding the Buchanans, William and Catherine's family no sign as yet. I've also checked the 1881 census on SP for Catherine and nothing is showing as yet...
-
I don't think so - it's very much a Twister:

Slow down. I think we have to keep to the Buchanan's. Lara was keen to follow William b.c. 1838 up and it's getting mixed up with Andersons. She's new to this and might wonder what is going on.
We're looking for his parents - Robert Buchanan, baker and Jane McKinlay

Thank you very much for the latest info. Its incredible.Yes it did all get a bit behond me but now Im upto date and sorted it all out.Do you think it possible to find Robert Buchanan - (the baker)s father and Jame Mc kinlays.
Even if its possible to go farther back that would just be wonderful.
I think I have all the latest from you,the last being the listing of the Buchanan line. But at the bottom of my page it says internet explorer can show a page,so dont know if thats just a funny thing going on with my computer or if I have missed a page. :)
Thanks again, hope to talk to you again soon.Lara.

Hi Lara
We've been looking for William, shoemaker, and Robert and his wife but can't find them on any censuses.
I'm starting to wonder if they were Irish. They don't seem to appear on any censues that we can find.
The 1841 census is free to view as an index:

It might be worth you browsing it to see if they are somewhere unusual.

You're very welcome Steve, I thought it was a cracking site too.
The orphanage is still there and is now flats, from memory I think the only part that has really changed is the doorway/entrance hall, the drive up to it is still very recognisable too, I had a drive round it a couple of months ago.
I'll go up tonight and take a few pics for you all to see.

I live in a house next to what was the "Highland Orphanage" in a modern house. My grandparents live in what I've been told was the schoolhouse and have had many friends living in the main building. All that live on the driveway are generally interested in the orphanage and it's history. Does anyone have more information? I'd be intersted in anything you could tell me.

Hi my mum and her 3 sisters were refugees from Berlin who lived in the Highland Orphange from 1939 until about 1947 with the exception of their youngest sister Dagmar Liebmann who was only 6months old when she came to the orphange amd was raised by Matron (Mrs Ritchie) as almost her own. My mum's name is Eleanore, and my two other aunts were called Faye and Ursula Liebmann. The girls have been tight lipped for most of their lives about their experinces in the orphange and now with age they struggle to remember. Mum does remember Hector Chisholm, Sheila, Molly and Flora MacDonald. Any further insights into their earlier lives would great to hear.
Many thanks

This is almost a year old I wished I had found it sooner. Actually my mom showed it to me today. She was at the orphanage from 1939-1952 and talks of the Liebman girls all the time. In fact I found a picture of her and Mrs. Ritchie and the girls a year ago in my Grandma's old photos. and Dagmar and her beautiful blond hair stands out so strong in the picture. They are all so cute. The "stories" not so cute. My mom still suffers from that place. Her mother took her back in 1952 in order to move to the United States . She was Jessie MacLennan then....she changed her name to Jenny and her married last name is Huth (yes she married a German). She can and would be willing to share all she knows of the place.

Hi all,
this is my first post to rootsweb though I have been looking at my family history on and off for quite a while now (not in any structured or methodical way of course! :D) I wanted to thank folk here for this brilliant discussion as it has given me an insight into some background information on my Anderson family roots. My name is Stephen Anderson, I live in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland and the James Anderson b. 1801 referred to earlier in the discussion, as well as other Andersons are all my relatives.
Catherine Anderson is my second great grand aunt, while her father James is my great great great grandfather, through his son Andrew, then William, then Andrew, my father Donald, then me, and my son James!
If anyone has any further information I'd be so thrilled to hear from you.
