Hi Maxine,

I think the Catherine NEWS who married Charles O'BRIEN in Lurgan, Co Armagh is the sister of my ancestor, Patrick NEWS. Their parents were Edward NEWS & Mary Ann GRACEY.

As far as I can see Catherine & Charles had the following children who were b in Lurgan.

Charles 1 Jul 1855
Charles 19 Jul 1856
John Charles 10 Sep 1857
Edward 11 May 1859
Mary 30 Aug 1860

Hope this is of interest to you.

Hi Gail
What a lovely surprise to here from someone.
I dont have all my information with me at the moment but it sounds very much like part of the family, although the dates are slightly different.
I will check tonight  and message you soon.
I know nothing of Catherine's family so this would be wonderful if we can join the families.
Sorry for the delayed reply, but have been unable to rootschat for some time.
Will contact you as soon as I can
Regards Maxine

Hi Maxine,

My name is Erin MacDonald. And I have just recently discovered that my great great grandmother was called Bridget Culhane. She was born circa 1854 in Limerick and arrived in Australia in 1875 on a ship called the "Ramsey". Her parents were James Culhane and Catherine Murphy. I don't know much more than that as it seems she emigrated alone on that ship. She married my g/g grandfather, Patrick Kinnane who was originally from County Clare. Have you any further information on the Culhane side?

Thanks,
Erin

Hello again Erin
I have to say that I have not confirmed any of this information a yet as I have not yet looked into the Culhane family tree too much but will tell you what I have discovered and you can research further.
William O'Brien Mar. Annie Mary Culhane St Mary's R.C. church Ipswich 01.081900(my hubby's gg grandparents)
William's younger brother Francis Joseph O'Brien mar. Bridget Mary Culhane same church in 1901
I haven't checked that they were sisters but looks highly likely?
When I traced Annie Culhane I found John Joseph Robert Culhane father and Mary Margaret Smith mother.mar same church 1866.
John Culhane's parents show as James Culhane bdm in Ireland married Catherine Murphy Ireland.
I also found James Culhane may have married twice?
John Joseph Culhane born abt 1845 Ardlaghan Limerick
died 16.06.1917 Pine Mountain.
So are details are alike in some ways but needs more research, hopefully some of this can help you along the way.
If you find we are connected( that Annie and Bridget are sisters) I will have more details to share with you.
Moving house this weekend so no internet, will reply ASAP
Regards Maxine

Hi again Maxine,

I hope your move to the new place goes ok. I know how horrible moving can be!

I think that my Bridget Culhane was the sister of John Joseph Robert Culhane. As her parents are James Culhane and Catherine Murphy as well. I know that she was born somewhere in Limerick, Ireland in about c.1854. She married my G/G grandfather, Patrick Kinnane in 1883 in the Ipswich area. They had six children. So there is a small connection possibly? I am continuing my search on the Culhane's this weekend though.

Thanks again for the info!

Erin

Hi!!!!!

I just found this forum.  I think I'm from Lucy's lineage, as (I think) Lucy had Julia (great grandmother), who had Mary (nana), who had my mum, who had me :)  I'd love to find out some more.

My nana always spoke about Moggill and loved it out there.

As far as I know, Catherine was burnt in a fire in Moggill, and then they named a church in her honour called St Catherines Church, which was then moved to Toowoomba.

From the research in above links, and through talking to my aunty:

Charles O'Brien married Catherine News- they were the ones who came over on one of the ships.
One of their daughters was Lucy O'Brien, who married Timothy O'Driscoll
They then had Julia O'Driscoll and a few others
Julia then had Mary (my grandmother), however Mary I believe was brought up by Lucy and Tim.
Mary married my grandad and became a Moran
They then had 6 kids, one of which is my mother.

I think that's how I fit into the equation :)

Hi again Moonshine,

Still can't find a birth for Lucy ... have found other children of Charles O'BRIEN and Catherine NEWS ... the first five were born in Lurgan, Co Armagh. Catherine was b. on "Queen of the Colonies" 1863 and the others were b. in Qld.

Did find the marriage of Lucy O'Brien to Timothy O'DRISCOLL 1892 Qld.

I wonder where and what year Lucy was born?

Would you like the information I have on the family?  I will send my email address through a personal messsage so just let me know.

Really pleased to have found another descendant ;D

My hubby's grandfather John Joseph OReilly who married Annie Agnus O'Brien donated the ground on which St. Catherine's church was placed.Yes she did perish in a fire, her cloths caught fire and they couldn't save her.Has any one confirmed that the church went to Toowoomba? would love to know.

Still appears to be at Moggill

St Catherine's - 3356 Moggill Road, Moggill

http://bne.catholic.net.au/asp/index.asp?pgid=11566

ADDED

Accordinging to this link there was a previous St Catherine

http://www.rc.net/brisbane/ourladyrosary/

The Jesuits arrived in Toowong in 1916 and for almost ten years ministered in an area covered by the present parishes of Toowong, Kenmore, Indooroopilly and St Lucia. The last three of these became a separate parish in 1924, and the first Catholic chuch in the Kenmore area was the original St Catherine’s on the corner of Grandview and Moggill roads.

Hi, just wanted to say a big thankyou to Gail for the information she sent regarding the O'Brien family connections.

Jenn, thankyou for your lovely welcome message - I can provide the following:

Charles O'Brien and Catherine News' son James O'Brien married Hannah Mary Hall in abt 1896. Their daughter, Edna Averil Vivian O'Brien was born abt 1902. Edna is who I am particularly interested in. She is a bit of a mystery lady.

According to the Historical records on the Dept Justice website, Edna married a William George Higgins in 1924 but by 1936 she was on the Electoral Roll as "married" to Leonard Corlett PYE. She went on to have a number of children to Leonard. Leonard himself had a first marriage, and it appears his first wife left him with their eldest son, taking the daughter with her and moving in with another man. He was apparently bitter about this to his dying day. I am unsure when and where Edna passed away - not sure whether this is because I am not looking in the right places or whether she went under a different name.

I am after any further information on Edna Averil Vivian O'Brien (Higgins, Pye)....

Thankyou
Kind regards
Timna

Hello Maxine
Wondering if we have a connection.  I'm a direct O'Brien descendant.  My O'Briens were from Lurgan, County Armagh.  I've done a lot of research on Lurgan.  I've often wondered if Charles O'Brien, who married Catherine News at Shankill RC Church, Lurgan on 10 September 1857 is related to my Joseph O'Brien (born c.1831) husband of Margaret Patterson.  I took number of BDMs from the Shankill register microfilm a few years back.  According to my research on the marriage of Charles O'Brien and Catherine News, the witnesses at their wedding were John Hogan and Margaret McCorry.  Does this tally with the information you have on this family?  I also have a baptism of:

Edward O'Brien, son of Charles and Catherine News, on 11 May 1859 at Shankill, Lurgan. Sponsor: Pat News.

Mary O'Brien, daughter of Charles and Catherine News, on 30 August 1860 at Shankill Lurgan.  Sponsors: James Coulter and Mrs News.

Charles, son of Charles and Catherine News, on 19 July 1856 at Shankill, Lurgan.  Sponsors: Edward and Mary J. News.

Let me know if this is your family and maybe we can work out if there's a connection between our families.
Cheers, Mary

Hi Maxine

My apologies.  That date 10 September 1857 wasn't the marriage date of Charles and Catherine News.  Sorry.  It was the baptism date of their son John.  He was baptised at Shankill RC Lurgan on 10 September 1857 and John Hogan and Margaret McCorry were his sponsors.

Cheers
Mary
