Title: Harrison - Lock Keepers Kytra Lock Kiltry
Post by: twopins on Monday 04 August 08 09:44 BST (UK)
Hello there, I am new to this so I apologise if this is in the wrong place.  I am looking for information on the Lock keepers at Kytra Lock.  Elias Harrison 3x Great Grandfather  and his son John 2x great grandfather were lock keepers there from 1851 to approx 1891.
Is there anywhere I can find history on the lock.  Also in the census John is written down as the lock keeper of the Caledonian Canal.  Is that the same as Kytra lock.

Also in the 1841 census it lists Elias and his family living at Kyltry public house.  I presume this is a pub, does anyone know anything about this as well.

I would appreciate any information or if someone could point me in the right direction or know of any publications that I can purchase it would be really appreciated.
I live in Australia now so access to these places is a little hard for me.
Cheers
Chris :)

HI Chris

Just to confirm that Kytra Lock is part of the Caledonian Canal. It's in the central section of the canal, to the south-west of Fort Augustus.

There is a book called "The Caledonian Canal" written by AD Cameron and published by Canongate that describes the history of the canal in some depth.

I do have a copy of this book, but unfortunately, there isn't a mention of a family of lock-keepers called Harrison.

The book does mention Kytra several times eg:

"There, locks are lonely inland places where the tradition of lock-keeping runs in families, the Bains at Kytra and the Kennedys at Cullochy."

Hope this is of some help.
Lynn

Oh Wow, I hardly get any replies to this end of my family.  I am descended from Arthur the 11th child in the line of John and Christina,  Arthur married Charlotte Axon and had 13 children with her. My Grandfather Frederick Percy Harrison 1901-1983 he is the 9th child of Arthur and Charlotte.  Granddad married Sarah Bowring (my Nan) in 1927, and they had 6 children and my Mum Sheila May Harrison was the fifth child then there is me. Christine May Pinniger.  I will now take a breath.  There does not seem to be a lot of people following this line, its rare to find someone to be honest so I am really happy you contacted me I have attached a picture of my granddad, and I do have a pic of the lock in Kiltry.  Maybe we can share email addresses to swap information.  Thank you so much for contacting me I am really excited at the thought of the information we can share
Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris
Fantastic thanks for getting back to me,I haven't got a huge amount of stuff but may be able to fill in a few gaps. The bits of information I have were put together by a genealogy group in Edinburgh doing a family tree on my 2nd cousin Eric Milligan who has been lord cheif proverst of Edinburgh several times in the last few decades so he's the same relation to you as I am,so you have a sort of famous Scottish politician in the family, one of his uncles my mums cousin also an Eric Milligan was a famous TV chef in the 60s and early 70s unfortunately he died fairly young in the 70s.
My email is s.masey@btinternet.com I would love to know more about this part of my family and your life and family.
Best wishes Simon
