Title: Lost Marriage Thomas Wain - complete
Post by: JosiahS on Sunday 24 August 08 19:04 BST (UK)
Hello there!

I am trying to track down a marriage for Thomas Wain to his wife Sarah somewhere in NW Kent.

He was born about 1783 in Eltham and she about 1783 in Bromley.  They started their family in Wilmington in 1805.

I have checked all of the parishes available in the IGI for those dates that lie between Bromley/Eltham and Wilmington, but Plumstead, Crayford and Woolwich are not avaibale for those dates.

Could anyone with access to those parishes please check and see if the marriage is there?  I'd appreciate knowing even if the answer is no.

Many thanks

Ashley

Have you tried Sidcup, Bexley, Chislehurst and Dartford - even Welling, Bexleyheath and Shooters Hill are all close by?  I live in Sidcup and know the area quite well.

Thanks Tigsy

I have tried all of the parishes which are available on the IGI or on the Medway Records site but the three parishes I mentioned are not on either hence my hope that someone might be able to help.

Hello,
Stumbled on your message whilst 'googling'  on WAIN name to find source of Thomas's father John who married Elizabeth Clark on 8 Jun 1779 in Eltham.
I have the Thomas marriage in my line, details below.
I dont believe any Eltham Church records are on IGI.  Have been in contact with archivist, they will only release data on payment, someone in NWKFHS did some transcripts but they are not available to purchase either and cannot be accessed thro FamillySearch...

Do you have any pre 1785 data?
Regards
Derek

Details:
Marriage 1 Sep 1803 at Ashford, Kent
Sara Hook from Bromley, b 1783.  Possible IGI i/d: Sarah Hook christened 5 Mar 1786 Aylesford, parents Richard and Ann.
Recorded as as Thomas Wayn bachelor and Sarah Hook spinster, both of this parish. Witnesses Henry Hadds and Henry Cranley?
Believe the Ashford connection involved his Militia training...
Thomas was born 11 Feb 1785 Eltham, Baptised 13 Mar 1785 St Johns Eltham.
Birth/baptism information taken from certified copy in 1806 of Eltham 1785 parish register.  Thomas needed this to join army.  Original doc is in museum Victoria B.C.
Recruited from the West Kent Militia to 77th Foot Regt. in Lincoln on 25 Aug 1807 to 2 Nov 1814.
Served in Peninsular Wars.  Copies of Bap & discharge papers received from Canada.
Family moved into Wilmington about 1804.  Am decended thro' son William b1811.

Hi Derek

Many thanks for that - I would never have looked in Ashford for the marriage and thank you very much for the information on his service record.  I could tell from the baptisms that he had been in the army but I had not found out more about that.

I am afraid that I have no data earlier than the baptism of Thomas's brother Richard  in 1782 and the death of his mother in 1787.

This is a tree I was doing for a mate of mine - he is descended from the eldest child, Thomas b 1805 via his daughter Emma.  Again I am missing a first marriage for that Thomas as I know he was a widower when he married Harriet Cogger in 1835.

Many thanks indeed for your help

Ashley

If you need any info on Eltham do let me know.  I live in Sidcup, a few miles from Eltham and happy to take photos of places in the area.  Kind regards
