Title: RAF War Graves-now with aircrews names - Chièvres, Belgium
Post by: minimaiden2710 on Tuesday 02 September 08 11:15 BST (UK)
Hello to all,
If any one is interested I have photographed a handful of war graves situated in the local cemetery at Chièvres in Belgium.  They date from 1941 - 1943 and appear to be the crews from about 3 or 4 aeroplanes.  There are a few Canadian and Australian airmen amongst them.
If you think that you may have an ancestor buried here I would be very willing to check it out for you and let you have a copy of the relevant photograph.
Kind Regards
Sarah  ;D

I have now added the names of the airmen who have been laid to rest at the above cemetery.  I hope this may be of help to some people.

Hi Sarah,
I have no connection to the cemeteries, but as an ex-RAF chap, I just wanted to say thank you.

Kind regards,
Thudders

Hi Thudders,
I'm so pleased that it is of interest to you.  I only live a couple of km's from the cemetery and noticed these few war graves.  I always find it very touching when I read the headstones.
I only took the photo's today but when I have all the listed the details, I will modify the first message with the names.  This may be easier for people that are searching.  So watch this space....................... :o
Hopefully within time I will be able to get to other cemeteries and do the same.
Thanks again.

Hi Sarah

That's a very kind offer. I spend most of my time on another forum, and there are a couple of members who would really appreciate copies of the photos. One is undertaking a project to set up a website with all CWGC graves around the world (with free access to all when it is launched), and another member is working on a similar project for all RAAF graves.

If you would like to contact them directly then they are known as Sniper and Spidge (RAAF deaths) on www.ww2chat.com  Or if you would like to PM me, I can let you know my email and pass on the photos to them

regards

Hi Kyt
Thank you so much for your message.  I really do appreciate it.  Like I said in my previous message, I only live a few km's away from the cemetery at Chièvres and I spotted the few war graves situated at the front near the gates.  I was in quite a rush but decided to stop.....obviously this is why I missed the others.  I will take another trip tomorrow to look for the missing ones and I will take some photographs.  I'm so pleased you know the history of these missions and have been kind enough to share it with me.  I would love your friends to use the photo's on his website.  I'll send him a message and pass on the photographs.  As I'm sure you may already know Chièvres is an Operational American Airbase now but in the war it was used by the luftwaffe (i hope I've spelt that correctly).
Take care for now
Sarah  ;)

Sarah ... how lovely of you to do this .... you'll make a lot of grown men very happy !!   :)

Fascinating to go around the gravestones though isn't it ? did you see any WW1 headstones at all while you were there ??

Annie  :)

Hi Annie,
Thank you for your message.

Yes it is fascinating, but also so sad when you see the graves of young men who were obviously cut down in their prime.

There are no WW1 graves there.  It is the village cemetery where they still bury the local people.  Obviously as Kyt mentioned above, the planes came down in this region so the men were laid to rest there.

It would be nice to think that these photo's may interest some people. Researching Family history can be so expensive and it has cost me nothing to go there so I would like to share what I have, with whoever is interested.

Kind Regards
Sarah ;D

Hi Sandy

Spidge is working on all Australian airmen/women from both wars who served with either the Australian or other air forces. He is collecting grave photos and information across the world, not just those buried in Britain.

I am sure he would be very happy of any assistance you could offer him.

Saw your message regarding your local cemetery and am grateful you have taken such an interest .I noticed a family name in your list, SGT P.J.KEAY R.A.A.F. and whilst I do not know if he is a direct relative , I would like to obtain a copy of your photographs for my research into my family, just in case!

Would this be possible?

Kevin Keay.

Hi Iain,

Have you seen the 5th message on this thread from Kyt?  He gives details of the location that the plane was shot down.  He mentions that the bodies may be buried there.  I don't know whether he knows any more.  Failing that I could always take a trip to Chièvres Maison Communale to see if they know anything.

Sarah, All,

I decided to join the actual Belgian campaign 'Live and Remember'.  Any citizen can honor the memory of an WWII Allied soldier who lost his life in Belgium.

I am living in blaton (Hainaut, Belgium), not too far from Chièvres Airbase and Communal Cemetary where some RAF crew members are buried.  As a true RAF and airplanes enthusiast I decided to honor the memory of Sgt Eric Howes who died on 11th August 1943.

Eric Howes was Sergeant Wireless Operator and Air Gnr on Halifax II serial no JD167 from 77 Sqdn.  All Halifax bomber crew members are buried in the Chièvres Communal Cemetary.  It seems the bomber has been shot down by a German night fighter.

In the night of 10th to 11th August 1943, RAF sent thousands of bomber to Nuremberg.

I'm still starting my enquiry on Eric Howes.  Could you please help me finding more information about him, about the JD167 Halifax bomber, where did the plane crash exactly, about the bombing mission to Nuremberg, ... ?

Sarah, could you please forward me some pictures of the following graves in chièvres :

Eric Howes,
Peter Hobbs,
Bryan Arthur,
Etherington Harry,
Faliejevas "Cockaine G"
Pegg Eric
Rushton Rodney

Thank you very much in advance, Merci beaucoup

Philippe

Hi, Bonjour Sarah,

Thank you very much for your answer.  Could you please forward the picture the following address philippe.delauno[at]base.be ?  Also if you have any other information about Eric Howes and/or the Halifax crew, feel free to forward it.

Did you hear about the 'Live and Remember' campaing launched here in Belgium, there was some radio interviews on the radio (well yes, between 2 Belgian political tragedy spots).  Perhaps could you make some search on other RAF crew members buried in Chièvres ...  ;)

Did you hear about the Lancaster who crashed near Gallaix (Leuze en Hainaut) ?  Look here http://www.notele.be/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9552&Itemid=31

Je vous souhaite un excellent week-end.

Hi Sarah,
Wondering if you are still on here and living near Chievres still??

I have started a project concerning my great uncle who died on the 14th July 1943, and as part of that I am logging all the crew that went down that same night on the same mission.

One of the crews is listed in your original post:

466 Sqn Well' LN288 HD- 14/07/43 Target Aachen
Shot down by Flak and crashed 0215 near Chievres (Hainaut),
Flt Sgt W A Gunning  Royal Australian Air Force
Flt Sgt H C Jordan  Navigator  Royal Canadian Air Force
Flt Sgt R Feakes  Royal Australian Air Force
Sgt D W Covell  Wireless Operator/Air Gunner RAF
Sgt T F Cummins  Air Gunner RAF

If you have photo's of these graves I would be very pleased to add them to my growing site.
This is LN288's page so far.. http://www.chrisandodette.co.uk/AachenRaid/466ln288.html

I have only been doing the site for three weeks so lots of work still to be done.

All the best

Hi Dee
You will also notice  that the pilot of my great uncle's plane, Edward Saywell was RNZAF.

I have placed some of his log book pages on the site already, and I do have other things too, but I got them through the sole survivor's grandson, and I'm not happy about putting these other things on there until I have contacted the relative of F/O Saywell's who was in contact with Ron Wisson... as yet that has not been possible.

Thanks for the encouragement, its starting to get there now..
All the best

I have just read your e-mail.  Yes I still have the photographs available but I am going on holiday later today and I'm due to leave home in the next hour.  If you can bare with me I will sort this out upon my return.  Thank you for your interest.  I will also be taking a look at your website as well.
I am hoping to get to another cemetery near here soon.  It is in the village of St Symphorien near Mons.  There are a LOT of war graves there.  I think it will be quite a task but I'll try my best.
Kind Regards

I've found the pictures that you are interested in.  If you would like to send me an e-mail address to which I can send them to, I will let you have them or equally I can try to send them through this website.  There are 3 photographs in all. Flt Sgt WA Gunning and Flt Sgt HC Jordan appear on one stone as do Sgt DW Covel and Sgt TF Cummins.  Flt Sgt Feakes appears on the third.  If you feel that you would like me to go and take some more of these graves, just let me know.  I will be happy to oblige.
Your website is marvelous.  Keep up the good work.

Glen was chuffed to bits with the link to the 75 Sqn a/c and I have sent the link on to the Air Force Museum at Wigram too.
Keep up the good work.

I know this is a long shot, but is there any way I could find a grave in Singapore, my great uncle Albert Whitford died 14th Feb 1942 I think in Changie ( not sure if this is how you spell it) prison he was age 22 and in the RAF

Hi Kitching. ADM199 is the FEPOW expert. You might try him with a private message for more details about Changi and information about your rellie.  I dont know whether we have any Singapore members but you could have a look to see if there is a group on here for that area of the world.
If you want his service record you can pay for it from the RAF though if your Uncle has any NOK ie your grandparents or a wife still alive it would be better coming from them.  If he has a wife then it would be free...
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Only came across this post recently and I'd like to add my thanks to Sarah for her original post and making photos available. My mother's cousin was William Macfarlane the pilot of Lancaster W4317. An extract of the book 'A Shaky Do' by Peter Cunliffe describing the raid in which his plane was lost is given here https://www.historicaltalks.co.uk/lancaster-w4317-qr-r-61-squadron
