Title: All Census returns please: Julius Lowenthal
Post by: proteantime on Saturday 06 September 08 18:02 BST (UK)
Hi,

It is amazing what becomes available online if you leave it a couple of years.

I have been on the search for the elusive Siegmund Oppenheim and have found that he was linked to a Julius Lowenthal in business in Manchester.

In 1848 Julius is in Huddersfield York:

Gazette Issue 20824 published on the 11 February 1848. Page 27 of 48

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us the undersigned,
Heymann Engel and Louis Lowenthal, both of Hamburg, and Julius Lowenthal, of Huddersfield, in ihe county of York, as Woolstaplers, under the firm of H. Engel and Co., has been this day dissolved, so far a* regards the said Julius
Lowenthal, who retires therefrom.
Dated this 27th day of January 1848. Heymann Engel.
Louis Lowenthal.
Julius Lowenthal.

He then shows up having disolved another business:

THE LONDON GAZETTE, JANUARY 13, I860

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership lately subsisting between us the undersigned, as African Merchants, carrying on business in the city of Manchester, under the firm of Julius Lowenthal and Company, was dissolved on the 1st day of November last, by mutual consent.  All debts due to and owing by the said late firm will be received and paid by the undersigned Hermann Seligmann, and Meir Jacob Haarbleicher.- Witness our hands the 10th day of January, 1860.
Hermann Seligmann.
M. J. Haarbleicher.
Julius Lowenthal.

This trade of African Merchant is the same as my Siegmund Oppenheim at the same time.

He then turns up in the National Archives records have been naturalised and denizised (term?):

Naturalisation Papers: Lowenthal, Julius, from Hanover. Certificate 3138 issued 23 January 1860.

*** there is also aDenization and naturalisation record for a Julius Lowenthal from Mecklenberg Schewin (same birthplace as Siegmund's wife Adele - coincidence? in 1858 and I wonder if this could be the same person listing his birthplace as different places?

Naturalisation Papers: Lowenthal, Julius, from Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Certificate 2600 issued 12 February 1858

He then turns up on the census in the same street that Siegmund Oppenheim lived and was in business under the same trade of Shipping Merchant:

1861
Chorlton Medlock
Ecclesiastical Parish: Christ Church
Folio: 53 Page: 9 Schedule: 44
Address: 264 Oxford St
LOWENTHAL   Julius   Lodger   U   M   29   Shipping Merchant    Overseas - Foreign - Germany Hanover
LOWENTHAL E Lodger U M 26 General Agent Overseas - Foreign - Hanover

He is also on the Manchester Exchange at the same time as Siegmund:

Slater's Directory of Manchester and Salford, 1863
Members of the exchange
Lowenthal, Julius, Cross Street

We then have the dissolution of their business:

THE LONDON GAZETTE, SEPTEMBER 9, 1864

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between the undersigned, carrying
on business at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, as Commission Merchants, under the firm of Oppenheim and Lowenthal, was this day dissolved by mutual consent.-
Dated this 23rd day of May, 1864.
Siegmund Oppenheim.
Julius Lowenthal.

At this time Siegmund does the denization and naturalisation process and in 1881, he is on the census for Lancashire living with his wife and four children. His wife is listed as Adele (born about 1851 Schwerin Mecklenburg).

I am trying to establish the following:

a) Where Julius Lowenthal was prior to 1861 on the census returns;
b)  Who E Lowenthal is that was living with him in 1861;
c)  Whether there is a chance that Adele who married Siegmund Oppenheim, could have been Adele Lowenthal.  I have no record of the marriage of Siegmund to Adele but their first child was born in Chorlton Medlock in 1872 and the couple remained in Manchester the rest of their natural lives; and
d) What became of Julius, ie. who he married, who his children were etc.

Many thanks in advance,

Kirsten Beach

Hi Iria and Kirsten,
not sure the ages marry up for Julius do they?

Looking at BMD there is a marriage for Adele Lowenthal - Huddersfield 1862. She seems to marry Henry William Anders and one or both of them appear in a couple of censuses but not together yet. I have not pursued them because at the moment they don't seem relevant.

I'll go and have another read and mooch around the censuses  ;)

Hi,

I have found 3 possible marriages for Julius.

1. Q3 1851 City of London

2. Q3 1854 Chelsea

3. Q3 1882 Chorlton, Lancs

Not possible to determine who he actually married.

John

The Julius is 29 iand not married in 1861 so the 1882 marriage looks likely. He may be related to the Huddersfield ones but he would be very young to be the one in business in 1848  - or am I not following this properly? Perhaps Louis' son/brother?

Lancashire BMD have the marriage in 1882- Julius Lowenthal and Anna W L Peters (Free BMD have her as Anna Wilhelmina L Peters.)

there is this one- same age

1891 RG12; Piece: 1048; Folio 14; Page 2
Willesden Middlesex

Julius Lowenthal  married 59 yrs b Hanover Germany  - no occupation

he is a 'brother in law' to the householder Annie Lowenthal widow 36 yrs b Manchester -( all quite confusing when compared with the marriage of Julius)

Annie is transcribed as Violet (person above her is Violet) Rosenthall and her children as Rosenthal but it is Lowenthal - I notice that one of her children is registered as Percy Loewenthal)

I hope you can keep up with my meanderings- I kep coming back to this.

The 1891 children where Annie is the mother are - (checked with Free BMD - Loewenthal
Evelina Flore b 1885 Islington and Percy Randolph b Islington. There is also another birth 1883 Louis Charles E also Islington.
This brings one back to Louis in Huddersfield - I wonder if connected?
I have just found a marriage 1877 Chorlton:
Edward Loewenthal - possible spouses Anna Maria Scott or Sarah Ann Partington.
Is this 'E' from 1861?

1891 has a Charles Edward Lowenthal 7 yrs n abt 1884 Kilburn in the Royal Masonic School Tootenham. I think this is the Louis Charles E birth from earlier.

I'm not sure at this stage whether any of this is relevant to anybody but I am enjoying the search!
The 1891 does link Julius with a brother 'E' as in 1861. They are quite difficult to find at times and I am still unsure as to whether they are connected to the Huddersfield group but it could well be but where are they in 1841- pehaps still in Germany. Maybe they travelled back and forth.

1881 has Edward with Sarah A so I think Annie is Sarah A Partington. She is born Manchester on census.
Edward is a button manufacturer b Germany. He is 47 yrs and she is 30 yrs.
I have not been able to find a death for him. (Germany??)

A bit of a summary to date:

I am trying to establish the following:

a) Where Julius Lowenthal was prior to 1861 on the census returns;
Perhaps he was in Germany - but linked to that Huddersfield family??
b)  Who E Lowenthal is that was living with him in 1861;
Is he the Edward living Islington etc
c)  Whether there is a chance that Adele who married Siegmund Oppenheim, could have been Adele Lowenthal.
The Huddersfield Adele seems to marry Mr Anders - have not fully looked at them though.
I have no record of the marriage of Siegmund to Adele but their first child was born in Chorlton Medlock in 1872
and the couple remained in Manchester the rest of their natural lives;
They are in Lytham - not Manchester in 1881 but perhaps the sea air didn't suit
and
d) What became of Julius, ie. who he married, who his children were etc.
hopefully there are some bits here but a bit disappointing I feel

From an article in the Times I was able to gather that in 1863 there was a Julius Lowenthal residing in Scotland who was a dealer in sponges and travelled back and forth from Hamburg, whose brother Leopold resided in York (and was in trouble with the law for smuggling cigars and tobacco into the country hidden in furniture!).

Transcribed as Violet Rosenthall
There is also a Siegmund Lowenthal but this is unrelated.  As are the Lowenthal family in London who are grocery merchants and whose traces bring us right into the twentieth century.
I think we have established that the link between the Lowenthals and the Oppenheims was not due to marriage but simply business that dissolved early in Siegmund Oppenheim's illustrous career.
Unfortunately (although all of this may prove useful to a Lowenthal descendant), I'm afraid I'm still at a brick wall of finding the roots of Siegmund and Eugen Oppenheim prior their arrival in England.

Many thanks everyone.

that's sad for you after all this hard work but it was interesting. The various Lowenthals seemed to be merchants of some kind or other.
I think I saw that Robert Lowenthal died - Aimee is transcribed differently later.
Also I think it may have been Edward's family- not sure now but there was a  child born Austria and a child born London so I think the Lowenthals may well have travelled back and forth - unlike your Oppenheims.

good luck with your searches

On hold but thought you might appreciate the following -

The Leeeds Mercury, Saturday August 15 1846
RAILWAY SPECULATION
The following is a selection from a list of the names and descriptions of all persons subscribing to the amount of £20,000 and upwards to any railway subscription contract deposited in the Private Bill Office of the present session of Parliament

Lowenthal Julius, Wool Merchant.........£27,960

On October 16 1845 he had become a Director of the Manchester, Huddersfield and Great Grimsby Direct Railway via Barnsley and Doncaster.

Tidy sum in those days (and not to be sneezed at these days!)

I also noticed in one newspaper article he was referred to as Julius Lowenthal Sichel

Immense thanks!

The Sichel is a fantastic clue and explains a lingering doubt I had in mind.  I have flagged this for further investigation.

I was very interested to read your post.
I am a grandson of Edouard Loewenthal of Hanover who seems to be a relative of Julius also of Hanover. I know that the above Edouard, had a father called Louis in Hanover as well as a sister Johannes, and two brothers called Otto and Emil. Maybe the Otto that appears in your post. I would like to know more of how Julius and Edward (anglizised) were related, since I was not aware of Julius' existence.
Thank you very much for all the work you have done.

Just been reading thru the notifications regarding Julius Lowenthal looking for a connection on Edward Lowenthal who married Sarah A Partington. I saw that there is a relative connected to this family, a grandson. I am also related to the same family and would be interested if the grandson could give me more insite as to which part of the family you came from. Was it from Evelina, Lewis or Percy. Much appreciated. Thank you.

Evelina, or Evelyn as I knew her only had a daughter, Joan Nathan killed in the WW 2 Blitz.
She died in 1965 in Harrogate, Yorkshire.
"Lewis", actually Louis Charles Edward, was my father. I was one of five siblings, three boys and two girls. Died in Aguilas, Spain.
Percy Randolph died a bachelor in Welwyn, Hertfordshire.
I never met my grandfather Edward and did not know he had a brother Julius, until recently.

You must be related to Julius. Have you much information on his German family?

Thankyou for that information. As Edward Lowenthal was your grandfather then Sarah Ann ( Annie) as she was called, would have been your grandmother. Did you ever meet her? Know anything about her? I am not related thru Julius Lowenthal, but through Sarah Ann. She was my great Aunt,  we didn't know what happened to your grandfather Edward. I have a photo of Evelina when she was 15yrs? old. It was taken with her cousin in Manchester. I have many photos and of course not many have been written on to explain who they are. I even may have one of Edward but don't know its him.

One of the Julius Lowenthals was a witness at the wedding of Charles Kroll de Laporte to Agnes Tootell; one of Agnes ancestresses was a Partington, and a Partington married a Lowenthal.
