Title: Jane Utterson lookup please
Post by: KevB on Tuesday 04 November 08 15:14 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

I am trying to trace my wife's great grandmother through the BC of her grandmother, who was given up for adoption in about 1915. She was born to a Jane Utterson, and the BC shows her name as Phyllippa Russel Docherty Utterson, 42 Westend Tweedmouth, Berwick Upon Tweed: 31-Aug-1915...

I think the G.Gran might have had the surname Kerse before she was an Utterson. My wife's aunt, daughter of gran, said that gran spoke about being adopted and that her birth mum had moved to Australia.

Let me know if you can confirm this in any way

Thanks in advance
Kevin

In the December qtr 1915 a Jane R Utterson married Robert McKelvie in Gateshead Durham

The 1891 census shows her b Scotland 1886 but living in Durham with parents James & Helen.

Might be worth checking whether the above Jane was Jane Russel Utterson

Nothing to suggest emigration as freebmd has 2 births for McKelvie/Utterson in 1919 and 1921 both in Gateshead

Not seeing that birth entry in any quarter of 1915 (and that was checking on the full BMD index). You probably need to check back with who has given you the info to verify details.

Thanks for all the replies, I will see if I can get a photocopy of the original BC to confirm the details. One thing is for sure... Phyllis (Phyllippa Utterson) does exist... ;)

I will try to remember to report back.

Hi,
It's been a while but I finally have more info from a BC.
Jane Utterson (Kerse) was a Cook Domestic in Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1916. She is listed as the mother of my wife's Gran, Phillipa Russel Docherty Utterson (b. 31 Aug 1916).
The birth place is listed as "42 West End, Tweedmouth, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland). There is no father listed on the BC.

So, with that new info, can anyone find Jane Utterson (Kerse), when she was born, who she married to become Utterson, etc...

Thanks in advance
Kevin

Does the birth cert show her as "nee Kerse" or "formerly Kerse"

Kevin,

There is a marriage of Adam Utterson and Jane Kerse, at The Manor, Kelso, 26 April 1907.
Adam is aged 21, Journeyman Shoemaker, of 29 Sheddon Park Road, Kelso. Son of James Utterson, Farm Servant, and Mary Utterson, maiden name White.
Jane is aged 20, Domestic Servant, of Hollybrace Cottage, Birgham, Parish of Eccles. Daughter of James Kerse, Fisherman, and Agnes Kerse, maiden name Waugh.

In 1901 census, Adam is 15, apprentice Bootmaker, born Chirnside Berwickshire, living at the Manse, Ladykirk, Berwickshire. Boarding with 73 year old retired Forester Alexander Robertson.

Adam Utterson, b. Chirnside Berwickshire, residence Cockburnspath, Berwickshire, L.Corporal, 8th Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) died of wounds,  8 Feb 1915. CWGC website has him buried in Bois Grenier Cemetery. Son of James and Mary Utterson of Grantshouse Berwickshire. Husband of Jeanie Kerse, now Mrs Phillips, of Booralaming, Dowerin, Western Australia.

Alan.

Thanks very much for this info...

Is there any more info about Jane Kerse, perhaps details of her birth date and place?

I am reasonably sure that this Jane Kerse is the G-Gran we've been looking for... the details match what I already know.

I'd also be interested in finding out more info about when Martin and Jane Phillips immigrated to Australia, more to confirm other info I already have than anything else.

Alan, those were great finds on the likely marriages for Jane  :)

Kevin, with the info from the marriage certs that Alan has provided, this might be Jane at home with parents in earlier censuses:

1891:

James Kerse 30, fisherman, b. Coldstream, Berwickshire
Agnes Kerse 25, b. England
Elizabeth Kerse 7, b. England
Jane Kerse 4, b. England
John Kerse 2, b. Coldstream

Address: 18 Duns Road East, Coldstream

Not sure where Jane may be for the 1901 census (could be working outside the home?) but this looks to be the same family in 1901:

James Kerse 40, Fisherman (domestic), b. Coldstream
Agnes Kerse 55 (age mistranscribed?), b. England
Elizabeth Kerse 17, b. England
John Kerse 12, b. Coldstream
Mary Kerse 10, b. Coldstream
Andrew Kerse 7, b. Coldstream
Janet Kerse 4, b. Eccles
Charlotte A Kerse 2, b. Eccles
Ellen Kerse 10 months, b. Eccles

Address: Main Street, Eccles

With the English birth place showing in 1891 for Jane, this is a possibility for her birth on Freebmd:

Births 4th Qrt 1886 - Jane Kerse in Berwick Vol. 10b Pg.414

Just pulling this out from an earlier post;

"Jane is aged 20, Domestic Servant, of Hollybrace Cottage, Birgham, Parish of Eccles. Daughter of James Kerse, Fisherman, and Agnes Kerse, maiden name Waugh"

I wonder if the housename given is a variation of the current name, there is a cottage now called HollyBraes, a listed building with an intersting history and noted on a listed building report as follows

Virtually abutting the eaves and set well in from the outer edges, the front upper windows help indicate the age of this former farmhouse. According to the present occupant, a floorboard found inside is dated 'July 22nd 1805'. Despite additions at rear, the house remains fundamentally intact - the simplicity of the main elevation and the retention of timber sash and case glazing being particularly notable. Marked as 'Long Birgham' on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map and described as "...a commodious farmhouse 2 stories high and in good condition" in the accompanying Name Book. Binnie notes that between 1906 and 1965, Hollybrae housed a mission station of St Mary and All Souls Episcopal Church, Coldstream - part of the 1st floor being used for services. The steading to the NW, originally associated with the house, is now in separate ownership and is not included in this listing

It's just a bit of trivia really and doesn't help prove anything, note though that the main route from Coldstream to Kelso passes through Birgham and terminates at Kelso on Sheddon Park Road.  Coldstream, Birgham and Kelso all sit on the river Tweed.

If it does turn out to be the right family for Jane, there is some info on potential parents James and Agnes on via some family trees posted on:

Hi

Jane (aka Jeanie) Utterson (nee Kerse) was my great-great Grandmother and married to Adam (G-G-Grandfather), prior to his death - where she then remarried to Martin Richard Phillips and moved to Australia with her James and sister Nancy (both children Utterson).

James is my Grand Father - had 3 sons, Leonard, Alan & Kenneth

Ken is my father = I'm Michael James Utterson
. . . .

Mike.

Hi Mike

Are James, your grandfather, or Nancy still alive? It would be great to find out if he remembers anything that would confirm that "your" Jane Kerse/Utterson is the correct person.

Season's Greetings

my great grandfather was James Kerse (Fisherman on Upper Birgham water) married to Agnes Waugh.
My grandmother - Mary Kerse - was one of the many children to James and Agnes - I have all the details. I have just returned from a trip to Western Australia visiting many relatives of John Kerse, one of James's sons- who emigrated to Oz around 1920.

anyone interested in pursuing this family line please get in touch.

Good afternoon ,
thrilled to have found this site.
my husband' s great grandmother was Elizabeth Kerse,  daughter of James Kerse and Agnes Waugh. I would love to hear about her siblings including Jane, Andrew, Mary and Ellen. I know that a sister, Charlotte, went to Canada and there are descendants in Ottawa and Vancouver, but I have little information  on the other siblings ! Regards

My grandmother was Mary Kerse. I have quite a bit of family history mostly researched by my brother in Canada.
Her first husband was killed in the 1st WW and she subsequently remarried an Andrew Kerr.
If there is any specific info I can help with I'd be happy to help.
My mother was born in 1918 whilst my gran was working at The Hirsel.

Thank you for your prompt response. If you can give me as much information about Mary, Andrew, Janet and Ellen - dates and information on marriages, children and grandchildren. I have pieced together information  on Elizabeth (husband's  great-grandmother), John, Jane and Charlotte, the last three having moved overseas. But I am struggling with the others.  My late father-in-law, Frederick Roy Kerse, spoke of such pride that his ancestors had worked in service at the Hersel.

You might also keep in mind possible spelling variation.  I have Utterson records that were indexed as Outterson.  Kerse is sometimes confused with Ker, Kerr, etc.

Kerse is a common name in the scottish borders - a family of gamekeepers and fishermen on and around the Teviot and the Tweed rivers - especially the ancrum/crailing/kelso areas - my cousin in off the infamous Robert Kerse - will have a look through some of the info I got for her and see in James shows up - Robert had a large family.

Just thought you might be interested in the fact Jane Utterstone had a paternity case against Philip Russell Docherty lance corporal royal Scots in 1917 - child born 1916 at haddington sheriff court - Jane was a widow and living 42 west end tweedmouth - if you go to Maxwell ancesty website you can get access to the record for a small fee

Anyone and everyone can look at it, including yourself, but Scottish Indexes is not a subscription site so anyone and everyone would either have to pay their fee (£5) to get the full documents from there, or go to the National Records of Scotland to view them in person. The National Records of Scotland search rooms are currently closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
