Looking for Daniel Craig Miller Andrews, Death cert says he came to NZ when he was 10, born 1888 Scotland looking for parents and siblings.
-
hi everyone is it unlocked now, I was looking around andtouched something I should not sorry, please try again. Michelle. :-[
-
Hi Michelle
(Thought it must have been accidental :D )
So ... his parents names are not on death cert ? (Is that correct) ?
(And ... he married Jean DUNN - 1916 (Folio # 4569) - do you have the marriage cert ?)
Lu
-
.... Archives New Zealand have 3 records for Daniel Craig Miller ANDREWS :
* Military file - held at Wellington . (Have checked cenotaph database (at Auckland) but there is no listing for Daniel which might have shown his next-of-kin).
* Archives NZ (Dunedin) have files for insolvency, and bankruptcy (1959, where he is listed as a "war pensioner).
http://www.archives.govt.nz/
Lu
-
.... the passenger list index at
http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action?redef=0
shows a "Daniel ANDREWS" - Liverpool to Wellington, NZ - 1909 ???
Can't see anything on this index which suggests a family group "ANDREWS", arriving circa 1898 ?
Lu
-
Looking on indexes there seems alot of MILLER ANDREWS as eith er Miller a first or middlename..do you have any idea of siblings names, or do you want some of these posted to see if they could be possibilities.

Althea
-
... just spotted also, Archives NZ (Dunedin), a bankruptcy file for a "Donald Craig Miller ANDREWS - Dunedin - merchant - 1945".
Can't find burial or any further info for a "Donald" - (possible the Donald shown (Archives), is in fact Daniel ). ???
Lu
-
There are some Donald Craigs, including one who died 2007 Lower Hutt

Hi everyone helping, I have checked that shipping list mentioned and I think it said a four year old Daniel in 1909.
I actually found the military and bankrupts records the other day and are writing to get copies A printout over the net would do but the NZ govt does not have that available as yet.
The Death certificate says he was 60 years in NZ, and died at the age of 70, his parents were John Andrews and Martha Andrews(Galbraith), it said he came from Johnson Scotland?, maybe they meant Johnstone, either way its a mystery. I don't have his marriage cert yet.
His male children are Daniel David Miller(Galbraith) Andrews, I have seen Galbraith mentioned only once in connection with this name and it was in family records, unfortunately they were compiled a while ago and I have a copy of a copy and have no Idea where it originated from expect it came from the Dunns.Samuel Galbraith Miller Andrews.
-
Hi Michelle
... found this on Dunedin cemeteries database :
John James Miller ANDREWS - died 1971, aged 72 years (born NZ - 1899). ???
Lu
-
Hi again Michelle
I have checked that shipping list mentioned and I think it said a four year old Daniel in 1909.
Mmm ... alongside the Daniel who is listed, it says date of birth "unknown" ?
BUT ... I wonder if this might be the family. ???
If you search (surname ANDREWS) again at "findmypast", and enter "year - 1909 / place of departure - Liverpool / destination New Zealand - port of Wellington", it throws up this group ...
ANDREWS - Annie / Daniel / David / Janet / John / Martha / Mary / Samuel :
(You'd obviously need to view the full record to establish if they are all from same family) ?
Lu
-
Aah ! :) This might answer a few questions ?
From Dunedin cemeteries database ...
ANDREWS - Samuel G.M. - died 1960 (Born Scotland c. 1896 - arrived NZ c. 1909) ???
(There is also a record for (another) Samuel Galbraith Miller ANDREWS shown).
http://www.dunedin.govt.nz/facilities/cemeteries/cemeteries_search
Lu
-
... at Archives NZ (Christchurch), this looks like the probate record for "Samuel G.M." .
ANDREWS - Samuel Galbraith M. - Retired baker - 1960 :
Also ... Archives NZ (Wellington) - military file for
ANDREWS - Samuel Galbraith - 1914-1918
and, from cenotaph database - "Mrs Martha ANDREWS (Mother) 420 Cumberland Street, Dunedin" listed as next-of-kin for Samuel Galbraith ANDREWS :

great work Lucy

Hi again,
now that I have had a look at the Dunedin cemetary records and found a few names the ships list makes more sense. :D
I had had a look at it before but dismissed it because they are under English and not Scottish passengers, and I was unfamilar with all the names. :)
Also had a look at Samuels military records, but found no Daniel as yet.
Marthas burial record just gave me another question... Native of NA ? tell me it is something simple Michelle. ???

Good work Althea. :) I'd looked earlier at this Martha on Dunedin cems. database and thought .... nah .... too young to be the mother of Daniel (b. 1888) ?
So, this Martha M. ANDREWS is buried (same plot - Andersons Bay Cemetery) with John ANDREWS .... and they appear to be the parents of Daniel.
(A note on John ANDREW's record says - Years in NZ - 20 ... arrived around 1907) ?

Marthas burial record just gave me another question... Native of NA ? tell me it is something simple Michelle. ???
??? ... just a guess ... "N/A" usually stands for "not applicable" (perhaps "place of birth" details were not available to person/persons compiling the online records). ???
Lu
-
Hi and thank you for the NA, I thought it may have some vague reference to a location or something.
Have had a look at the archives, thank you and will have to send away for more info.
The Mary at Purewa must be mine how many people would give their children such a name.
looking forward to next installment. Michelle.

Martha Galbraith Miller ANDREWS
Not sure where she fits into the overall picture? Seems to have been born c. 1916 - maybe she's a daughter of Daniel ?
[Possible though that she could be a child of Martha and John]?
She comes though, with a "bit of history". ;D

Hi Lu, If she was born in 1915 she may be Daniels daughter. He also had Daniel David Miller 1916, Samuel Galbraith Miller 1919 and June 1921.
You are right about it being more interesting, no wonder they never talked about things back then.

Annie Calderhead Miller ANDREWS
[Marriage to George BYRON - 1944 (Folio # 05011) ] :
From Dunedin Cemeteries database - cemetery record for :
Anne Cauldhead BYRON - died 29 May 1989 - aged 83 years (b.c. 1906) - cremation :
You'll see there are two records for her - one gives a plot number at Anderson's Bay cemetery; the other record states "Ashes - family plot interment - 2 June 1989" - but the plot number doesn't relate to the other ANDREWS (or BYRON) family burials ? Perhaps you can email Dunedin and see if they can tell you who else is in the family plot which Annie shares ?

Hi Lu, all I get for the Dunedin cemetery is "server not found- try again". It may have to wait until tomorrow. :( Michelle.
-
You are right about it being more interesting, no wonder they never talked about things back then.
Yeah ... and don't you think they'd all be a bit peeved, if they knew that all these years later, we were digging up all this "stuff " on them ? :o :D
-
Maybe they would care about being remembered and not stress the little stuff. And more to the point what will our ancestors think about us. :-X ::) Michelle.

Hi Michelle
Dunedin Cemeteries site seems to be working OK now - (they'd been off line most of the afternoon due to maintenance ).
Still haven't found the "David" and "Janet" (children of John and Martha) yet. There's one possibility for Janet - so will keep looking.

Hi Lu, not on my server yet still uncontactable. Michelle.

Hi Michelle
Glad you managed to get onto Dunedin cemeteries site ... (and you're a clever girl for taking the other option). :)
[Have to admit, that site can at times, be a bit dodgy to hook up to ... I've got two separate links to it, just in case there are problems].
But some good news ... I'm pretty sure I've found the missing child "Janet" (who appeared with Daniel and family on the passenger list).

did, even on the IGI it is the same. ???

:D [Nah, nah ... it's the wee hours of Monday morning here ... I tend to hit all the wrong buttons and things when I'm half asleep.]

Hi all,
Have had a reply from "GR". My question to the researcher was "Do they have any Daniel Craig Miller Andrews that came to NZ in their tree ... and did he have a brother John who also came to NZ ...... and that I was helping a descendant who could be a possible link"
This is the reply:
Yes and yes so hopefully you can solve one of my problems. My gran was Annie Calderhead Andrews daughter of John Andrews and Mary Miller. She had brothers John Daniel and David. David I have. He worked and died in Edinburgh. Daniel and John vanished from Scottish records. Daniel was born 1872/1873 in Hamilton Scotland and John on 13/12/1869 in West Calder then part of Midlothian. Their parents died young and they were brought up by Grandfather David Miller.
I have been invited to look at the tree. So the next step - would you like me to invite the researcher to rootschat or Michelle pm's me her email address and I pass it on.
-
Great news, lets hope Michelle checks back soon.
You could always let the researcher know about this thread, what do you think, then they can join in if they want ;D
Thanks for doing that, Kiwihalpint

Hi Althea,
No problems at all ....
Will send a reply to the researcher about the thread and the results you guys have uncovered.

-
Hi KHP,
At the moment I think I will not give out my email address, if you don't mind and just keep using this chat line for any contact with this other researcher. :-\
But it sounds like they are the same people and it would be great if they slotted in. :D
Michelle
-
Hi All
Yes, good work by KHP in providing the link to the other researcher.
Althea's thought, about inviting the researcher to join in this thread, is an excellent idea :) ... that way, all the info can be brought together in one place and there is scope to "iron out" any " inconsistencies" ?
[At the moment I'm a little puzzled that Daniel's death cert. and the cenotaph record for Samuel G.M., record their mother as "Martha ANDREWS" ... but yes, should wait for further info (and sources) to be provided (hopefully) by the other family researcher) ;)
Lu
-
Hi,
Have given the researcher this thread, so hopefully they will join in, and see what results have been posted.
Cheers
KHP :)
-
Hi
I'm the researcher mentioned. I have Daniel born 1873 in Hamilton's birth certificate. Not difficult as I still live there. My gran Annie Calderhead Andrews was also born in Hamilton. Their parents were John Andrews and Mary Miller. Mary was the daughter of David Miller and Annie Calderhead. Annie died after 1851 and David remarried Janet Erskine. He was the son of Daniel Miller and Mary Faulds from Whitburn in Lanarkshire. Annie was fron Shotts in Lanarkshire. I have the family in census records to 1891. But in the 1901 census could only find Annie and David and no death certificates.
So I assumed Daniel and John had moved somewhere else probably when their grandfather David died in 1897.
I have no records with the name Galbraith although there are other Daniel Millers in the area as the Scottish naming convention means cousins have same name.
Hope this helps
Jean
-
Welcome Jean ;D
The naming customs to cousins is interesting
So the Annie Calderheads we have in NZ could be fitting into this line somewhere do you think??
So does it look like this is def another family
Sadly it doesn't look like a direct link...but maybe somewhere
Maybe we some posts to scottish board - to find this family who arrived 1909. Are they considered the best match for the original posting???

Great news.
I've located John Andrews in the 1901 census. Clue was Johnstone as mentioned here.
He was living at 22 Russell Street Johnstone. He was 30 and a gatekeeper storeman. Married to Martha who was 28. He was my gran's brother, born in West Calder and Daniel Craig Miller Andrews brother. Martha was a British subject born in India. Children were Daniel aged 7 born Coatbridge. Samuel aged 5 born in Howwood, John aged 2 born Johnstone and Mary aged 5months also born Johnstone. How much information would you like about John's ancestors?

John and Martha's departure from Liverpool and arrival in NZealand were as far as we had gone back, so any information you have would be fantastic. As much as you can give me. ;D ;D :-*
British subject born in India, makes it even more interesting, a million and one questions spring to mind. :o

Have now located John's marriage certificate. They were married on 13th December 1892 (registered 1893) in Bowfield Renfrewshire. John list his parents as John Andrews Millar and Mary Millar and signs as John Millar which is why I've been searching so long! This is not illegal over here. I've checked 2 of the children so far. They were also registered with the surname Millar. I've information going back to 1800. May be easiest if you log on to GenesReunited and ask for permission to see my family tree.
let me know how you would like the information.
Jean
-
Hi Jean I haven't been to geansreunited yet so I had a quick look.
Just where do I go to request a look at your family tree, the only way in I found was registration, or a feedback line. I'm sure it is something simple I've missed, please point me in the right direction. ???
Michelle
-
Hi all,
Once this line had been wrapped up and I was in contact with GenesReunited I realized that nothing had been found for David, that came over with his family on the ship from Liverpool to NZ.
Could I throw his name back into the arena please.
There is nothing in the Dunedin cemetery for him which is the first place to look for this family.
Is there any other records for him :)
Michelle
-
Hi again Michelle
I think we all had a pretty good look for records for this David earlier in the search, but it's still possible that he's hiding under plain old "David ANDREWS" ??
Do you have his full name ... from the latest information you've found on this family? (i.e. does "Miller / Millar" feature as one of his christian names) ?
Do you have a record of his birth in Scotland ?
Lu
-
hi Lu
All I got from GenesReunited was an approximation date of birth of 1903.
All the other siblings have miller in their name though.
Daniel his brother's birth was recorded as Daniel Craig Millar, no Andrews at all, so they are hard to find. :(
Nothing for David as yet.
Michelle
-
Hello Michelle
i was just wondering if you found anymore information on Jeanette's side?
thanks
